This is a significant time we are living here where Iniciativa Colectiva is created. I create this magazine from sunny Florida and November 4th was a very significant date for Americans as well as the rest of the world. We are at a turning point when it comes to politics and the state of the world's economy which affects everyone. Not just Americans. I don't know what the turnout is as I write this and design this magazine. But I sure hope we emerge from the crisis that this country is at and I hope it's for the better.

We are also celebrating 2 years online and that's surely a happy and proud moment for me. I began this magazine to inspire and to showcase talent and I am glad to have met so many great artists in the process. I dedicate this magazine to all of you who support it and contribute in such an amazing way. Thank you and here's to many more years of great work.

1. What type of medium do you work with and explain how you use it?Digital design mostly, I tend to use a digital drawing table for some piec-es, complemented with a number of graphic design software.

2. What was your main interest in producing this artwork, or is there a statement you wanted to con-vey?My main interest was always to learn more and more from the tools, not just stagnate in one or another style or technique, also a lot of hit and miss but always trying to adapt all that I have learned to my own work-flow, just cant get enough of the op-portunities that digital format gives, that freedom to have all the resources and tools on hand with only a click, to do and undo.

3. Tell us about your creative pro-cess, do you have any rituals, rou-tines you follow? How does your artwork come together? Most of the time, just sit in front of

the computer with some music and a cup of coffee also disconnect the Internet helps me, too.

I begin to work with a single theme or an idea that its buzzing in my head, some-times tend to be songs, movies, whatever... then I just try to find the colors and the im-ages that complement what I have in mind, things that could inspire or help me to de-velop the piece.

4. How did you get started with your ar-tistic career? As a teenager, I found my-self involved with all the branches of street art but was never as good as i am in digi-tal art, now about how I ended doing this, a friend show me his new computer along with Photoshop 5, dozens of hours playing with the filters amazed by this powerful program (before that, I only used MSpaint) then after strolling through each genre of digital painting was a logical step to keep with the clean lines and the recycle econo-my that vectors and pixels offers.

5. What would you say is one of your greatest accomplishments? That some-body liked my art so much to hang it on his wall or put it on a t-shirt, also when a friend asked me how I did it, that question made my day, also I've known and worked with some fabulous digital artists, there are many people I admire through the years and from which I learned many things.

6. Where does your inspiration come from? Or is there any particular move-ment, artwork or artist you find yourself influenced by?I've always been attracted to the way a posters are designed, the practical charac-ter that makes a poster to be enjoyed from different distances and perspectives.

My main influence has alwzays been the whole movement created around the pin up posters, from Mucha's pin-up girls, to the Soviet Propaganda...and of course this whole digital abstract art that is more or-ganic. In all my pieces consciously and unconsciously, I always try to integrate all these elements.

1. What type of medium do you work with and explain how you use it? I've been using photography and collages in my work, specially for Iniciativa Colectiva, I've used pho-tography along with illustrations.

2. What was your main interest in producing this artwork, or is there a statement you wanted to convey?I'm always trying to say something else in my pieces, for the Iniciativa Collectiva piece and as a nature lover, I decided to come up with a mix of fashion and nature which I've been exploring a lot lately in my work.

3. Tell us about your creative process, do you have any rituals, routines you follow? How does your artwork come together? Well, I like to hear a good music and sometimes I use to take little breaks to think what I want to do with that work and if I'm getting

there. The composition process is always hard, I used to spend more time thinking about the composition than anything else. It's difficult but it's fun at the same time.

4. How did you get started with your ar-tistic career? I started my career in 2000 working with interactive shops and agen-cies. In Brazil, I worked for agencies like BBDO Group, Ogiilvy and Agencia Click, which was really nice. I learned a lot work-ing in these agencies and also I made good friendships.In '05, after 5 years working in agencies, I decided to become a freelancer to have

more time to develop my illustration skills and I've been focused in the illustration field since then.

5. What would you say is one of your greatest accomplishments? I think moving to the US was really a great for me, working abroad is different in many ways, I've been learning English and also working with nice people and good clients.

6. Where does your inspiration come from? I'm really into to the nature theme. The si-lence of nature and the organics and de-tailed forms of plants and flowers have al-ways been a great inspiration for me.

When I was kid, I used to spend my vaca-tions in small towns rich with nature and very peaceful and I think that when I was researching for my own style I just brought my childhood into my illustrations, spe-cially when I draw birds. My grandfather loved birds, I always associate his image with birds.

7. How do you see your artwork evolv-ing from now? I can see more space to explore my nature style and my collages than before, I've been learning a lot and pushing myself lately to get better in both styles, new challenges are showing up and I hope they still com-ing, they will definitely help me develop more my artwork. - IC

1. What type of medium do you work with and explain how you use it? (Paint, design, photogra-phy, collage)As a graphic designer, my area of work goes from illustration to logo design, typography, adver-tising, graphic design and more. I work mainly using a computer but most of it starts with a pencil and a piece of paper. And a brain of course! I used to paint on canvas when I was younger and still in art school. I quite left that on the side for too long when started using the computer but I'm coming back to this now. I guess I miss the "physi-cal" approach of art (dirty hands & messy room :). As well as drawing. I started an online sketchbook where i post every day a new drawing fresh from the day. I'm in a period where i want to experiment new stuff, mix-ing mediums such as collage, paint-ing, drawing, screen prints and also getting more involved into custom toys... Let's see what comes out !

2. What was your main interest in pro-ducing this artwork, or is there a state-ment you wanted to convey?I think that everyone have something to say. Some can't but some have the opportunity to shout, with their words, their images or by action. I went into illustration and design to express myself. Bur i don't think i have any statement to convey or special message to transmit.

My work stands more like my own vision of the world around, from the past to to-

day and future. A visual testimony of my various influences, all mixed together to get something new I hope, that I do in a very selfish way, for my own entertainment and well, that's great if people like it too. I also use a lot of words, expressions or "clichés", using French, English, Spanish, all togeth-er, so i think the humouristic part of my work, which is an important part, comes from here.

3. Tell us about your creative process, do you have any rituals, routines you follow? How does your artwork come to-gether? (Do you use found objects, im-age banks, etc)I a general way, I like (and need) to write down some ideas when starting a project. It's helpful for me to get things clear. Basic process is the same for both illustrations, logo design or advertising. It starts on the paper, with sketches, more or less finished, sometimes it's just rough. When this part is good for the illustrations, I redraw the paths in Illustrator, add some fonts, some text, some graphical fancies. The main design is done here. Then, I jump to Photoshop, where final colors, effects and textures are finalized.

4. How did you get started with your artistic career? After 2 years in an Art School, I began working at web agencies and creative studios, as a designer first and later as Artistic Director on various proj-ects, both online and offline. I always want-ed to work on my own, driving projects my-self, deciding of my own clients better than being under the "power" of a business guy who could sell design, fish or buy cars the same way. So, I am now working freelance

for about 5 years, for different kind of cli-ents like small companies, artists, agencies, bands, etc. I've been lucky enough to work only on great projects, even the ones done for money :). I try to do the most illustration works possible but it's not that easy.

5. What would you say is one of your greatest accomplishments? Well, I hope that is still to come!I wish I could get more feedback from people about my work to know what they like and think. But for the professional part, I will say the illustration work I have done for Talent, an agency in Brazil. It was pretty much a challenge because it was new to me to make something with shoes. Not my usual area. But the project went great and everyone was happy with it.

I've also just launched a new project that I hope will grow to become an important part

of my work. It is called La Lust Pro-paganda, it's an online magazine, an art-digging and exchange place between people and artists, sharing ideas and experiences, giving feed-back on each other's works. It's a young project, I guess it will evolve, we already have ideas for future. It's only in French so, sorry for the non-speaking, but everybody is welcome anyway.

6. Where does your inspiration come from? Or is there any par-ticular movement, artwork or artist you find yourself influ-enced by?Too many to list here. I will say my personal background is the main one. This includes TV Series, mov-ies, toys, books, fashion and all the things I had around when growing up. I grew up in the 80s, just figure out, you can't be left unmarked :)

Of course, actual art and design is important too, as well as other's people work. I try to know about that but I don't get too much into it, just take the good part of it and make it my way. Music is important too. I listen to different styles but I can be sen-sitive to artists like Robert Wyatt or Mark Hollis for example, who have a very personal approach of their art.

7. How do you see your artwork evolving from now? Well, still in the graphic design area for sure! Doing more Illustration, Mo-tion Graphics, being part of an agency or leading my own, who knows! I hope I can collaborate more with other creative people around the world, travelling, meeting peo-ple, building up big projects and sharing ideas. There is so much to do. I don't want to make plans, i just keep on doing what I like, evolving and having fun, it's already a big deal! - IC

What is your discipline? How did your career begin? Cual es tu disciplina, como empezaste tu carrera?I am a commercial photographer. I started exactly 20 years ago with two friends who were also pho-tography fanatics. We created a studio since we believed we had a 'good eye' and just went for it.Soy Fotografo Comercial. Tell me about your work. Hablame un poco de tu trabajo. I am a commercial photographer who needs to have an input in all my projects. I think that most projects are a team collaboration and hav-ing a good team yields great results.Soy un fotografo comercial aportar en sus proyec-tos. What has been one of your best work experiences? Cual ha sido tu mejor o una de tus mejores experiencias laborales?There have been many, and here's one I'll never forget. The project was: My World by Cirsol. For three months I travelled the entire island search-

ing for religious celebrations, parties and food preparations. It was kind of like a National Geo-graphic experience and it brings a smile to my face just remembering it.Han sido muchas pero hay una que nunca se me olvidara: proyecto Mi Tierra de Crisol. Por tres meses viaje esta isla entera en busca de celebra-ciones religiosas, fiestas y preparaciones de comi-das. What has been your biggest challenge and how have you conquered them? Cuales han sido los desafios mas grandes que hayas tenido y como lo sobrellevaste?The biggest challenge was when I was hired by the Dallas Cowboys' Cheerleaders to do their Bathing Suit Calendar in 2003. I was working with two other photography studios and I came in with my small equipment. When I saw the other studio's equipment I almost fainted, very third world. I was very nervous and spoke to my mother-in-law and she said: Just be yourself and you'll see. With that I started working with what I had and I guess it worked because I have been back 4 more times to work with them. In your opinion, what did you think about the portfolios you reviewed? En tu opinion, que les pareci-eron los portafolios que revi-saste?As expected, I saw an array of things. Some portfolios were very good and others that I thought were joking.Vi de todo, como esperado. Algu-nos muy muy buenos y algunos que creo que estaban bromeando.

Are the students well prepared to go out into the workforce directly to a design studio or advertising firm? Estan los estudiantes prepar-ados para salir a trabajar a una publicitaria/estudio de diseño? As far as photographers, I only saw one. Fotografos solamente vi uno.

What do you think should be added to their within the University curriculum?Que piensas deberia ser añadido al pensum de estas carreras?Portfolio creation/design.Creacion de portafolios.

What is your discipline? How did your career begin? Cual es tu disciplina, como empezaste tu carrera?Graphic Design and Illustration. I began my ca-reer as soon as I finished school at Parsons and I came back to the Dominican Republic right away. I started working as the Art Director at Listin Diario, which was a great ex-perience because I had to produce about 60 supplements in a month, with a team of 3 designers and 2 production artists. It was the best school since everything was very fast paced and you had the oppor-tunity to see your work printed ev-ery day where you could see every error and solutions for the same problem for the next day.Diseño gráfico e Ilustración. Em-pezé inmediatamente termine mi licenciatura en Parsons. Regresé al pais inmediatamentey comenzé a trabajar como direc-tor de arte de revistas en el Listin Diario, una experiencia maravil-losa, pues debia producir alrededor de 60 suplementos al mes, con un equipo de 3 diseñadores y 2 diagra-madores (paste-up). Tell me about your work.Hablame un poco de tu trabajo. I have worked mainly in editorial design, graphic and illustration and I have taught Graphic Design for the past 11 years.

My work is simple, I prefer legibility and typog-raphy predominates in my work as well as styled visuals.He trabajado principalmente en el área editori-al, tanto en gráfico como ilustración, además de enseñar diseño gráfico por 11 años. What has been one of your best work experi-ences? Cual ha sido tu mejor o una de tus mejores experiencias laborales?My best experience was the 7 years I was in charge of the Graphic Design Department at the Altos de Chavon School of Design teaching com-munications, typography, editorial design and History of Graphic Design. It was a remarkable experience because it helped me grow as a pro-fessional and stay on top of the new develop-ments within the area. I have always maintained a freelance career as well because as a profes-sor, you must be on top of what is new within the market so you can teach your students with real and up to date education.Mi mejor experiencia fueron los 7 años como en-cargado de la carrera de diseño gráfico en Altos

de Chavón La Escuela de Diseño enseñando co-municación, tipografía, editorial e Historia del Diseño Gráfico. Fue una experiencia maravillosa porque me ayudó a crecer meas y a mantenerme al dia en el área; renovación año tras año. Siem-pre me mantuve trabajando freelance, porque creo que un profesor debe estar vigente en el mer-cado para poder dar una educación real y actual a sus estudiantes.

What has been your biggest challenge and how have you conquered them? Cuales han sido los desafios mas grandes que hayas tenido y como lo sobrellevaste?Dealing with clients and editors present great challenges about human relations and effective communication. I have had all kinds of clients and I have learned something from each one of

them. When you realize you are not infallible is the first step to over-come a bump on the road. To know when to say no and when to give in or not before you compromise your principles and values.El lidiar con clientes y editores siem-pre presentan grandes desafíos de relaciones humanas y de comu-nicación efectiva. He tenido toda clase de clientes y de cada uno de ellos he aprendido y superado algo. El darte cuenta de que no eres infal-ible es el primer paso para superar cualquier "bump on the road". Sa-ber cuando decir no y hasta donde cedes sin comprometer tus princip-ios y valores.

What did you think about the First Ever Multidisciplinary Con-ference?Que te parecio el Primer Encuen-tro Multidisciplinario?I hold great admiration toward the new generation, and I feel that I am more part of it than the one I was part of. Modafoca is always inno-vating and is always preoccupied with new developments within the Graphic Design community and when they approached me about the project, I thought it was an excellent initiative because recent

graduates are lacking the information. I thought the conference was necessary.Tengo una gran admiración por esta nueva gen-eración, incluso siento que soy meas parte de ella que de la que me tocó. Modafoca siempre ha es-tado innovando y preocupado por el quehacer del diseño y cuando Ian me habló del proyecto me parecio excelente iniciativa pues es verdad que en los recien graduados hay falta de información. El encuentro me pareció acertado y necesario.

What do you think could improve in the fu-ture? Que piensas que pueda mejorar para un futuro?More workshops would be great, to balance out the lectures with workshops because in my years of teaching I have learned that designers learn faster through workshops without leaving behind the theoretical part of learning.Más talleres vendrían bien, equilibrar charlas con talleres, pues en mis años de enseñanza me he dado cuenta que la mayoría de los dis-eñadores aprenden de la práctica, sin dejar a un lado la teoría.

Were you able to speak with some of the stu-dents who attended? What did they think about the EME? Hablaste con algunos estudiantes? Que pen-saron del EME?Everything you talk about during the conference is great. Everyone was excited about how it went on and everything that is about to come.Todo lo que se habla en el medio es buenisimo, todo el mundo excitado por lo que fue y más aún con lo que vendrá.

In your opinion, what did you think about the portfolios you reviewed? En tu opinion, que les parecieron los porta-folios que revisaste?Like in any Portfolio Review, I saw a wide array, from great portfolios to not so great ones. The sad thing is that the not so great ones are not due o lack of talent but lack of information and reference points.Como en toda revisión, tuve de todo, desde por-tafolios muy buenos a muy malos. Lo lamentable es que los malos no se deben a falta de talento, sino de información, referencia.

Are the students well prepared to go out into the workforce directly to a design studio or advertising firm? Estan los estudiantes pre-parados para salir a trabajar a una publici-taria/estudio de diseño? Most of the students were prepared in the tech-nical sense using the software, as opposed to 10 years ago but not in terms of design, good aes-thetics, good communication and abstract level.La mayoría está preparado a nivel técnico (mane-jo de softwares) a diferencia de hace 10 años. Pero no muy bien en el aspecto diseño, buen gus-to y comunicación en el nivel abstracto.

What do you think should be added to their within the University curriculum?Que piensas deberia ser añadido al pensum de estas carreras?I don't believe the curriculum needs to be re-structured in most universities but mostly within the student's personal education. Here is where we find the biggest problems, not too many people are prepared to TEACH arts or graphic design. A small amount of supervision is given by the professors and their methodology within the classroom. This level of responsibility and professional ethic should be improved upon immediately.El pensum no creo que necesite ser reestructura-do en la mayoría de las universidades, pero si el personal docente. Ahí es que estean los grandes problemas, pocas personas preparadas para ENSEÑAR arte, gráfismo. Y poca supervisión de parte de los directivos en las metodologías dentro de las aulas. Ese nivel de responsabilidad y etica profesional si debe ser cambiado de inmediato.

Do you think that there should be more Con-ferences or Lectures of this type within the various universities and how often? Crees que debiran haber charlas de esta indole en las universidades y que tan amenudo?Definitely. This Conference showed us that. The student's thirst to receive this type of informa-tion is palpable and we have to provide that. There is a difference when it's your experimental work than commissioned work. What has been your biggest challenge and how have you conquered them? Cuales han sido los desafios mas grandes que hayas tenido y como lo sobrellevaste?The doubt that I felt if I was ready or not for a specific project, if I was experienced enough. You must be pragmatic, I think that's the only real way to work in this industry.La duda de si estaba listo para hacer algún tra-bajo específico, si no me faltaba experiencia. It's very defying to know where your job takes you. What is your discipline? How did your ca-reer begin? Lerolero Collective is an experimental crew founded by the students Javier Liriano, Ernesto Maxwell and Massiel Federo who try to make a space for the visual arts and other graphic experiences and work on them freely and totally independent. The collective was born in 2007 to express our complaints about education, commercialization and art tendencies in our lovely country. We try to experiment in all disciplines that involve graphic/visual arts in a way that we learn from what we do.

Tell me about your work. We try to do our work the best way possible. In 2007, we began to produce visual arts for live performances and extraordinarily we had a great acceptance in that arena. We never, and really never took classes or had any pre-vious experience, we only showed what we thought was best, how we felt and how we like to work, I mean tendencies, and put it in our graphics. This was very funny for all of us because we always thought that our ideas were extremely weird and we realize that this was not really true at all, a lot of people felt good and represented on what we do.

What has been one of your best work ex-periences? I think our best work experience was our first live performance of course, because we were very, very scared and we did it anyway, and did it very well I think. The weird thing is that the fear we had that time was the same that pushed us to give our best ideas. And our last live performance in the Multidisci-plinary Conference was one of our best ex-periences too.

What has been your biggest challenge and how have you conquered them? One of our biggest challenges was in fact that

in our country, young people like us are not very well portrayed in the area of good work, and we try to develop ideas that seem to be mature but feel young at the same time and that is a big challenge for us. We try to do good work, and forget the opinions while we express our ideas. If our ideas and how we express the are welcome, good for us, but if not, we learn from that and try to do it better next time.

What did you think about the First Ever Multidisciplinary Conference?When we created the idea of this event, and talked about it with Modafoca Studio and all the collaborators that we personally met, the most important thing for us was and is to motivate the students and young people and show them things that create consciousness of what they want to do and how to do it AND WE DID IT! This first one not only reached our target audience but we all learned from this in many aspects. We don’t know if all the doubts were over but many ideas begun there.

What do you think could improve in the future? This year all the collaborators were local tal-ents, maybe (and we are working on this) we can bring some international talent. More people will enjoy this event and we expect it to grow every year. For this first one, all of our expectations were accomplished beyond our imagination.

Were you able to speak with some of the students who attended?Yes. I had the chance and all the people who talked to us about the event were satisfied. In my university, some students made a vid-eo to thanks us. (Laugh). We don’t have any complains yet. Everyone is waiting for the next one and I promise it's coming sooner than we think.

Cual es tu disciplina, como empezo tu carrera?I am a Graphic Designer by profession, gradu-ated in 1991 on the 7th graduating class from Altos de Chavon/The School of Design. At the time, I really wanted to study Industrial Design and just as I was about to start, they cancelled the major so I opted for Graphic De-sign. So it was purely coincidence that I am doing what I am doing today.Pues, soy Diseñadoa Gráfica de profesión, soy de la clase graduanda del 91, la 7ma. promoción, de Altos de Chavón/La Escuela de Diseño. Realmente queria estudiar, en esa época, Diseño de Productos y justo cuando iba a comenzar, cerraron la carrera, así que opte por Diseño Gráfico. Asi que fue por causalidad o causualidad que estoy en este oficio.

Tell me about your work. Hablame de tu trabajo.It's plentiful. I have a tendency to work with many elements but without losing my vision and have a focal point. This way my audience will have a clear idea of the focus of the piece. My style changes from client to client but if I have the liberty to be creative, I maintain my own vision.Pues, es bastante profuso. Tengo la tendencia de trabajar con muchos elementos. Pero, sin perder de vista las lecturas, para asi poder tener claro cual sera el punto focal, por lo tan-to, el espectador tendrá bien claro, el recorrido visual. generalmente procuro que se tengan tres lecturas. Lo del estilo, cambia según el cli-ente pero cuando tengo libertad creativa, pues regularmente, mantengo esta formula.

What has been one of your best work expe-riences? Cual ha sido tuna de tus mejores experiencias laborales?It was at Altos de Chavon/School of Design when I was the Coordinator for the Certified Digital Design Program because I was also

able to teach other majors and this allowed me to learn the various software from all points of view which gave me the opportunity to diversify. Also at Hart & Associates, which was my first job in Santo Domingo after living in Chavon for 10 years and I was able to work with 25 international brands.En Altos de Chavón/La Escuela de Diseño, siendo la Coordinadora del Programa certifica-do de Diseño Digital, ya que además de hacer esta función, impartía docencia para las de-mas carreras y esto me permitia, ver los soft-wares desde multiples vistas, dandome opor-tunidad para diversificarme. Tambien, en Hart y asociados, ya que fue mi primer empleo en la ciudad despues de vivir 10 años en chavón y pude trabajar con 25 marcas internacionales.

What has been your biggest challenge and how have you conquered them? Cuales han sido los desafios mas grandes que hayas tenido y como lo sobrellevaste?In 1999, I was commissioned to design a huge triptych to commemorate the 100th Anniver-sary of the American Slavery Abolishment for the Unesco Dominican Seat in Paris. The challenge was technology. I had to purchase the top of the line computer at the time. It was really difficult because the files were very big and I had to do them one by one because the computer could only handle so much. I printed them on canvas and then framed them. They looked like paintings. When I look back, I notice how much technology evolves every day. Technology sometimes helps and sometimes becomes another obstacle.En el año 1999, me encargaron un Triptico enorme para commemorar el 100 aniversario de la abolición de la esclavitud en America, para el stand de Republica Dominicana en la Sede de la Unesco en Paris. El desafio fue la tecnología. Tuve que comprarme una computa-dora, potentisima para la época. Era bastante dificil, ya que los archivos eran "super pesa-dos", y tuve que hacerlos uno por uno, ya que

la maquina no soportaba tanto peso. Los imprimi en canvas y pusimos un marco. Parecian unas pinturas. Cuando miro hacia atras, Me doy cuen-ta cuanto avanza la tecnología cada día. Hoy por hoy, esos archivos serian uno más de los que tengo. Así que la tecnología, a veces te ayuda o a veces se convierte en un obstaculo.

What did you think about the First Ever Mul-tidisciplinary Conference? Que te parecio el Primer Encuentro Multidisciplinario?It was an crushing experience, very exciting and secretly defying and very comforting. Also, like Rafael de los Santos mentioned, it felt like a community effort. I have always had that feeling and I have tried to help my country, and this is why I have chosen to teach and share my expe-riences.Una experiencia abrumante, extremadamente emocionante, secretamente desafiante, inmen-samente reconfortante. Además, que finalmente, como dijo Rafael de los Santos, con un sentido de comunidad. Siempre he tenido ese sentimiento, y he tratado de ayudar a mi pais, por eso, he pro-curado educar y compartir mis experiencias.

What do you think could improve in the fu-ture? Que piensas que pueda mejorar para un futuro?Well, I would have an image of all the collabora-tors. Although there were some I did not meet, it

would have been a great thing to remember ev-eryone by, for a great moment. This can sound superficial, but to have a common thought about the entire event, I have gained great insights which translated into great talks which was well received based on respect and diversity.Pues, que tuvieramos una foto todos los colabo-radores. Aunque fueron pocos los que no conoci, pero hubiera sido un gran recuerdo, para un gran momento. Pudiera parecer superficial, pero real-mente el tener un pensamiento común sobre el evento, reporto grandes beneficios, que se tradu-jo en grandes charlas, con una excelente acogida, basadas en el respeto a la diversidad.

Were you able to speak with some of the stu-dents who attended? What did they think about the EME? Hablaste con algunos estu-diantes? Que pensaron del EME?Yes, I had the opportunity, most of the students who approached me the day of the event have written me and have stopped me on the streets. They loved it, the most common comments have been that they enjoyed the diversity of the speak-ers and that the organization was excellent.Si, tuve la oportunidad, ya que muchos se acer-caron el día del evento y con el correr de los dias, me escribieron, me pararon en la calle. Cual es tu disciplina, como empezo tu carrera?At the EME, I collaborated as part of the Au-diovisuals, but I also do 2D animation and work as Art Director.I was originally in advertising :) I started do-ing animations by pure coincidence when I showed some animations to Actor/Director Waddy Jaquez and included one of my ani-mations into his production of "Lethal, Live TV" and from the success of that show and good feedback he decided to incorporate me within his proposal to the Casandra Aawards in 2004. There I met TV producer Rene Brea and from then on I began my career as a seri-ous animator.En EME me toco participar en el módulo de au-diovisuales, pero aparte de hacer animaciones 2D, trabajo como director de arte. Original-mente soy publicista :-). Mi carrera haciendo animaciones la empece por coincidencia cuan-do le mostré algunos trabajitos de aficionado al actor y director teatral Waddys Jáquez, de inmediato el figuró una de mis animaciones en su obra "Letal, Televisión en Vivo", a raíz del éxito y los buenos comentarios decidió incorpo-rarme en su propuesta de los Premios Casan-dra 2004. Ahí conocí al productor de televisión René Brea y de ahí en adelante empecé en se-rio mi carrera como animador.

Tell me about your work. Hablame de tu trabajo.I actually work as an Art Director at Cumbre Nazca Saatch & Saatchi and I also work in-dependently animating for different TV pro-grams, commercials, theater and shows. My animations are usually 2D and sometimes I incorporate some 3D elements. I have always believed in playing with white space, design and colors in 2D can give a more interesting visual effect and give it an "artesan" feel up to a point.Trabajo actualmente como Director de Arte en

Cumbre Nazca Saatchi & Saatchi, y también trabajo independiente haciendo animaciones para programas de tv, comerciales, teatro y es-pectáculos. Mis animaciones son por lo regular 2D y muy raras veces utilizo algún recurso 3D, pero muy básico, siempre he creído que jugar con los espacios, diseños, colores en 2D mu-chas veces puede dar un efecto visual mucho mas interesante y un poco "tipo artesanal" has-ta cierto punto.

What has been one of your best work expe-riences? Cual ha sido tuna de tus mejores experiencias laborales?I have a lot of fun doing animations for the-ater productions, because I have more liberty at them, more artistic...I had a lot of fun doing a short for "Carmencita Testimonial Dancing Show" in the theater production of "Lethal, Live TV".Por lo regular me divierto mucho haciendo ani-maciones para teatro, porque me deja ser mu-cho más libre, más artístico... Gocé muchísimo haciendo el cortico de "Carmencita Testimonio Dancing Show" de la obra "Letal, Televisión en Vivo".

What has been your biggest challenge and how have you conquered them? Cuales han sido los desafios mas grandes que hayas tenido y como lo sobrellevaste?Each project is a new challenge. Many of these I simply accept saying "Yeah, yeah, I know how to do that!" and as soon as I say that, I begin trying to figure out how to do what my clients want, and I usually have no idea! Most of the time I come out on top.Bueno, cada proyecto es un desafío nuevo. Mu-chos de esos trabajos los tomo diciendo "si, si, si... yo se como hacerlo" pero en realidad em-piezo a maquinar desde ese mismo momento a ver como puedo hacer realidad lo que me pida el cliente, que muchísimas veces no tengo ni idea! pero en la mayoría de los casos salgo bien parado.

What did you think about the First Ever Multidisciplinary Confer-ence? Que te parecio el Primer En-cuentro Multidisciplinario?EXCELLENT! (in Caps!) I thought the initiative was great and I would've liked to have something like this when I was in school. I think it's a great ori-entation tool, mostly because univer-sities here don't have specialization in the areas that we are now working at the EME which are indispensable for any creative project.EXCELENTE! (así mismo en mayús-cula!) Me parece genial la iniciativa, y me hubiese gustado tener un foro de esta magnitud cuando yo estaba en la universidad. Me parece una muy bue-na herramienta de orientación, sobre todo porque en las universidades no hay especialización en las áreas que estuvimos trabajando en EME, que son áreas indispensables para cual-quier proyecto creativo.

What do you think could improve in the future? Que piensas que pueda mejorar para un futuro?Not precisely improve, but I hope it keeps growing and adding gadgets, a bigger venue and more simultaneous activities, etc...No precisamente mejorar, pero si que siga creciendo y seguir agregando gadgets, un lugar más grande, más actividades simultáneas, etc...

Tell me about your work. Hablame de tu trabajo.Our work is very diverse and fun because of all the things that go along with having the store, the gallery and studio space all together. At the studio we are in charge of many projects from corporate identity development, web design, pack-age design to art direction for events, photography and video. The gallery keeps us at the forefront of new talent in illustration, photography and many other disciplines. Since we are not formal cura-tors, we work directly with the artists to come up with the exhibition. Lastly, with the store we sell

design pieces created by ourselves and along with other artists, the Modafoca t-shirts are the most well-known pieces, which were the first pieces we started to sell.Nuestro trabajo es muy diverso y divertido por to-das las cosas que llevamos con la tienda, galería y el estudio al mismo tiempo. En el estudio nos encargamos de una serie de proyectos desde el desarrolllo identidades corporativa, páginas web, empaque y dirección de arte para eventos foto y video. What has been one of your best work experi-ences? Cual ha sido tuna de tus mejores expe-riencias laborales?I would say that this one we live today. The re-sponsibility to grow is our sole responsibility. To work with your best friends and share a circle of people that are creating and adding new experi-ences every day. The eight, ten, twelve, fourteen hours a day can pass very quickly.

What has been your biggest challenge and how have you conquered them? Cuales han sido los desafios mas grandes que hayas tenido y como lo sobrellevaste?Our evolution has been constant and progressive. We decided that we can accomplish everything little by little. Each day is a constant battle, we live in a country that has many insecurities and little guarantee as far as producing the pieces we design, and this places us at a disadvantage along with everything we deal with on a daily basis (Ma-terial shortage, printing processes, quality, etc.)Nuestra evolución ha sido constante y progresiva. Nosotros decimos que poco a poco logramos las co-sas. Cada día es una constante lucha, vivimos en un país que tiene muchas inseguridades y poca garantía en cuanto a la producción de las piezas qie diseñamos, esto nos coloca en una desventaja con la que tenemos que lidiar a diario (Escaséz de materiales, técnicas de impresión, calidad, etc)

What did you think about the First Ever Multi-disciplinary Conference? Que te parecio el Primer Encuentro Multidis-ciplinario?It's a good start. As with everything, we have to start somewhere, and there is much to improve upon. The best part was having the first experi-ence and see what things we can improve on. The second Conference will be much better, how it should be. There were a lot of great things to men-tion from this first installment: the good vibes from people who attended was incredible, the sense of comaradery and the support we received from all of the collaborators. Informal spaces were created where there was a great interchange between the audience and all the professionals.Es un buen comienzo. Como todo no hay segundo sin primero y quedan muchas cosas quedan por mejorar. Lo mejor fue tener esa experiencia y ver que cosas mejorar y como hacerlas mejor. El se-gundo será mucho mejor, como debe de ser. Pasa-ron muchas cosas chulas , la buena onda de la gente que asistio fue increible, la unión y el apoyo de todos los colaboradores. What do you think could improve in the fu-ture? Que piensas que pueda mejorar para un futuro?This first installment was free for our audience and thanks to all of our sponsors, we were able to achieve it. I think that if things are to be done cor-rectly, and to make people feel the responsibility to assist, and more importantly insist they attend, we will have to have a fee next time. This will help the conference to be better organized now that there will be a demand to improve upon the next times. Also, we have to always have new things on the program, to make it more interesting for the next time around.Este primer esfuerzo fue gratis para todos los asis-tentes y gracias al apoyo de los patrocinadores se llevó a cabo. Pero creo que para que las cosas se hagan como se tienen que hacer y las personas se sientan responsables de asistir y más importante exigir tiene que haber un cover. Esto ayudara a re-alizarse mejor y a que haya una demanda a que sea mejor cada vez. También tener siempre nuevas

cosas en el programa, hacerlo cada vez más inte-resante.

Were you able to speak with some of the stu-dents who attended? What did they think about the EME? Hablaste con algunos estudi-antes? Que pensaron del EME?Honestly, we were very embarrassed because of the technical problems that were our of our hands. Everything that could go wrong, went wrong. It seems that no one minded since all the feedback, the emails and conversations about the confer-ence we have had afterwards has been extremely positive and inspiring. Thank you to all the feed-back that we have been getting we are more in-clined to keep doing this kind of conferences and always improving the show.Honestamente, teniamos muchas verguenza de los errores técnicos que se salian de nuestras manos, se hizo todo lo imaginable para que no pasaran. Al parecer a nadie le importo mucho porque todos los emails que nos envian o que hemos recibido han sido super positivos y inspiradores. La Pixeleria is basically a VJ collective whose audiovisuals are all original, inspired by music, technology and the society we live in.

We have had the opportunity to present at par-ties with International DJs, local bands and we were in Argentina and we did a couple of shows there. Shows with Stereotipico and Netlabel, which have components such as Hip-Hop, Tech-no and Ambient, are the ones that complement the experiment as such. We always prepare a concept with them for presentations which give the audiovisual event more integrity.

Technology plays a very important role, imagine 6 computers and other equipment on a network producing all the audiovisual material. Some-times we get more people involved, everyone collaborates with a sounds, visuals, etc... it be-comes a very interesting mix.

La Pixeleria's role is to give the 'experimen-tal' music show a new dimension that is now emerging in the Dominican Republic and Santo Domingo in general. A Visual dimension which will narrate the 'zeitgeist' of Santo Domingo and give the island a new twist. We have also had the opportunity to show with various Haitian groups as well. Right now we are in the process of education, studying the possibilities to ex-plore the world of interactive installations, I'll let you know when we have achieved that!

The collective is directed by 4 main heads, 2 VJs and 2 Music Producers. The origin of La Pixele-ria surges from La Sederia which is an art, de-sign and illustration collective for which we do Call for Submissions and we also publish maga-zines and do art exhibits. All for promoting art in Santo Doming and to showcase material form other countries as well.

La pixeleria es basicamente un colectivo de vjs. el cual todo material proyectado es original, in-spirado en la musica, tecnologia y la sociedad nuestra.Hemos tenido la oportunidad de fiestar con Djs internacionales, grupos locales e incluso tuvimos en argentina e hicimos unas cuantas presenta-ciones por alla.Pero las presentaciones con stereoptico, net-label dominicano el cual tiene exponentes de hip hop, techno, y ambient; son las que complementan el experimento como tal. Pues con ellos siempre pre-paramos un concepto para presentaciones, dan-dole mas integridad al evento audiovusual.

La tecnologia juega un papel importante, pues imaginate 6 computadoras y demas equipos en red produciendo todo el material audivisual. A veces logramos juntar mas personas, todo el mundo colabora con un sonido, un pietaje..se vuelve muy interesante.

El rol de la pixeleria es darle otra dimension a la escena musical "experimental" que emerge en santo domingo. Una dimension que visualmente narre el "zeitgeist" de Santo Domingo y por ende la isla entera. Incluso hemos tenido la oportuni-dad de te proyectarle a varios grupos Haitianos.Ahora mismo estamos en processo de educacion, jjajaja estudiando la posibilidad explorar em mundo de las instalaciones interactivas..ya te dejo saber cuando logremos algo.

El colectivo es dirigido por 4 cabezas, dos son Vj's y productores y los demas son productores. Por ultimo el origen de la pixeleria surge a partir de la sederia. La sederia es un colectivo de arte/diseño/illustracion el cual hacemos convocato-rias y publicamos revistas o hacemos una exposi-ciones. todo con el fin de promover el arte aqui en santo domingo asi tambien exponiendo material que nos envian de otros paises.

What is your discipline? How did your career begin? Cual es tu disciplina, como empezo tu carrera?I work in many disciplines, I am half of Mapo which is an audiovisual project in which I am DJ and VJ next to Marcos Cabrera. With Mapo, we are also involved with Graphic Design and Motion Graphics which we generate with origi-nal material. I am also an avid illustrator (my vice) but most of the time I spend at work at Young & Rubicam Damaris where I am Creative Supervisor for the Dominican National Brewery (Cervecería Nacional Dominicana). My career began in the year 2000 when Joel Nuñez and Ares Deveaux invited me to their post--produc-tion studio Devó. There I learned a lot and I fell in love with advertising even more and I had the opportunity to go over to the creative side.Bueno....tengo varias disciplinas, soy la mitad de Mapo que es un proyecto audiovisual en el que hago dj y vj junto a Marcos Cabrera, en Mapo también se ve involucrado mucho de diseño grá-fico y gráficos en movimiento que generamos para nunestro material original. También soy ilustrador (mi gran vicio), pero la mayor parte de mi tiempo lo paso en Young & Rubicam Damaris donde soy Supervisor Creativo para Cervecería Nacional Dominicana. Comencé mi carrera en el 2000 cuando Joel Nuñez y Ares Deveaux me invi-taron a su estudio de post-producción: Devó, ahí aprendí muchísimo, me enamoré mucho más de la publicidad y de tuve la oportunidad de pasar al área creativa.

Tell me about your work. Hablame de tu trabajo.I'm going to focus on my 'creative work' to en-capsulate everything I do because it's all impor-tant to me. The first thing I can tell you is that I feel very blessed to wake up everyday knowing that I am motivated to do the things I do, there are many people who don't have this opportu-nity in their careers. It makes me very happy to make things and to feel I do them well.

VJing has made me very happy because I can practice what I have learned with animation and design, it's a very open field, there have been no set limits. Mapo as a project also excites me be-cause I am a music addict and with this project, I threw myself into deejaying and to propose a different local scene and I enjoy it very much. With Illustration, I was witness to the power of a blog because it went from being something per-sonal and casual to being viewed with respect. With advertising I find it to be a very exciting job as well. I manage brands like the Dominican National Brewery with which I can speak to an entire country who has very high expectations with this particular brand and to be able to con-nect to this scale is very cool and with advertis-ing in general, to be completely redefined in a general sense, it makes advertising fun to work in and you can take any new project as a new challenge.Ok, me voy a referir a mi trabajo como "el trabajo creativo" para encerrar todo lo que hago, ya que para mi todo es igual de importante. Lo primero que te puedo decir es que me hace sentir muy dichoso levantarme todos los días sabiendo que tengo cosas motivadoras para hacer, hay mucha gente que no tiene la misma oportunidad en sus profesiones. A mi me hace felíz hacer cosas, y sentir que las estoy haciendo bien.El Vj me ha hecho muy felíz porque además de que me permite practicar lo que sé hacer de animación y diseño, es un lenguaje super libre, todavía no se han establecido los límites. Mapo como proyecto también me emociona bastante porque soy super adicto a la música y con este proyecto me atreví a ser dj y traer una propues-ta diferente a la escena local, en general lo dis-fruto muchísimo. Con la ilustración fuí testigo del poder de un blog, ya que pasó de ser algo personal y casual a algo visto con más respeto por mi mismo. Con la publicidad me parece un trabajo super emocionante! yo manejo marcas como Cerveza Presidente con las cuales tienes que hablarle a todo el país, que tienen siempre

expetativas super altas con esta marca y poder conseguir una conección a esa escala es algo su-mamente emocionante, además de esto en nego-cio de la publicidad en general está siendo re-definido completamente, que a nivel general hace de la publicidad algo muy divertido de trabajar si tu quieres ver cada proyecto como un reto.

What has been one of your best work experi-ences? Cual ha sido tuna de tus mejores expe-riencias laborales?Thank God I have had many great experiences but the best yet has been to participate in the Young Creatives Competition Advertising Festi-val in Cannes last year. To be measured with the whole world, and make friends from all over the world is something I highly value.Gracias a Dios he tenido muchas buenas experi-encias pero quizás la mejor hasta ahora ha sido participar en el Young Creatives Competition del festival de publicidad de Cannes el año pasado. Medirse con el mundo entero, hacer amigos del mundo entero, es algo muy valioso.

What has been your biggest challenge and how have you conquered them? Cuales han sido los desafios mas grandes que hayas tenido y como lo sobrellevaste?When I got my first gig to VJ a party I had never seen the software you use to do this and this was a fun challenge. In advertising I always mention that the challenge to get your clients' trust be-cause they have to believe in what this little boy will tell them. How have I conquered them? I don't really have the recipe for that, but I can tell you that once you take away all the clichés out of the way, everything becomes much easier. There are people who take this as an excuse to justify less professional behavior.Bueno cuando conseguí mi primera fiesta para hacer vj no había ni visto el software nunca en mi vida, eso fué un reto divertido jajaja. Y en pub-licidad siempre menciono el reto de conseguir la confianza de los clientes que tienen que creer en lo que les va a decir este muchachito. ¿Cómo lo he sobrellevado? pues yo no tengo una receta así muy precisa que te pueda dar, pero si te puedo decir que una vez tu logras quitar del medio esos clichés que persiguen a la gente del medio creati-vo/artístico, todo es mucho más fácil. Hay gente que toma como excusa este tipo de trabajo para justificar comportamientos poco profesionales.

What did you think about the First Ever Mul-tidisciplinary Conference? Que te parecio el Primer Encuentro Multidisciplinario?I thought it was excellent. I couldn't attend all of the lectures but I got goose bumps when I went to Modafoca's and Republica's presentation and I saw that the room was full and when I saw Ana Banana's video, each time I saw one of the stu-dents ask a question or to hear a colleague give an answer to those questions. This is the first time that something like this happens, a project just to better the Visual Communication commu-nity with such a great vibe and it says a lot about this generation. Students are eager to learn and professionals who are eager to have this industry flourish in the collective thought level.Me pareció excelente, no pude estar en muchas charlas pero se me puso la piel de gallina cuando entré a la de modafoca y república y vi ese salón lleno, cuando vi el videíto de Ana, cada vez que veia a un estudiante hacer una buena pregunta, o a un colega dar una buena respuesta. Es la prim-era vez que sucede algo tan desinteresado y tan buena onda por esta industria, eso dice mucho del tipo de esta generación. Estudiantes locos por aprender y profesionales locos por hacer que la industria echa pa'lante a nivel de pensamiento.

What do you think could improve in the fu-ture? Que piensas que pueda mejorar para un futuro?Everything can always improve. The EME has a lot of potential to improve because of the con-cept. I am almost sure that for next year the next event will have more international collaborators and there will be more sponsors and more big firms will also participate, the technical mis-takes will be fixed, etc...Todo siempre puede mejorar, el EME tiene muchísimas oportunidades de mejorar pero por lo rico de su concepto. Estoy casi seguro que para una próxima entrega habrán expositores interna-cionales, habrá más apoyo de patrocinadores, habrá más apoyo de agencias grandes, se cor-regirán los errores técnicos, etc....

know what they want and others that have a real understanding in what they do want and at the EME they found a new oasis. There are people who have called me from Santiago to see if we can present at PCMM because there is a real urgency in our industry and there are many students who are dissatisfied in what education they are receiving at the moment and they will let you know when they get the chance.Si hablé con varios antes y después, y la verdad es que aun cuando hay muchos que no saben lo que quieren, hay otros que tiene un real interés y una búsqueda que en el EME encontró un oasis. Hay gente que me ha llamado de Santiago a ver si pueden presentarlo en la PCMM de allá, porque hay una urgencia de conocimiento en nuestra industria, hay muchos estudiantes poco satisfechos con lo que estan recibiendo en las universidades, te lo hacen saber desde que tienen el chance. -IC

SHAMPOOadvertising agencyWhat is your discipline? How did your career be-gin? Cual es tu disciplina, como empezo tu car-rera?At Shampoo, we work in communications. We are at the EME to speak about advertising and also the re-ality in which we are not limited to that. We started Shampoo precisely after working on advertising with various agencies and we realized that this was ex-actly what we didn't want to do. Shampoo began as an art collective, we participated at the Caribbean Bienal in 2003 and in early 2004 we converted into an advertising agency.en Shampoo trabajamos comunicación, estamos en el eme para hablar de publicidad pero la verdad es que no nos limitamos a eso. iniciamos shampoo precisa-mente después de trabajar publicidad en varias agen-cias y darnos cuenta exactamente de lo que no quería-mos hacer. Shampoo nace además como un colectivo de arte, participamos en la bienal del caribe del 2003 y para principios del 2004 nos convertimos también en una agencia de comunicación.

Tell me about your work. Hablame de tu trabajo.Shampoo's work has a lot to do with what we do as a collective and what we do as an agency and finally how artwork and marketing pretend to communicate things and this is what we do. The lines between each is in the intent, personal communication and brand communication. We face each project with an open mind and in marketing we search for communica-tion solutions and brand identity, we work in build-ing brands and this connection between the brand and people.El trabajo de Shampoo tiene mucho que ver con lo que hacemos como colectivo y lo que hacemos como agen-cia, al final el arte y la publicidad pretenden comu-nicar cosas y eso es lo que hacemos, la línea entre ambas está en la intención, comunicación personal o comunicación para marcas. enfrentamos cada proyec-to con una mente abierta y más que publicidad bus-camos soluciones de comunicación e identidad para marcas, trabajamos en la construcción de marcas y en esa conexión entre la marca y la gente.

What has been one of your best work experiences? Cual ha sido tuna de tus mejores experiencias laborales?We've had the chance to do each thing, marketing for mass consumer brands like Brahma and Verizon, the respon-sibility to build and maintain Sema. The creation of each public art project: Sarmiento Urban Art that is already on it's Third installment and the project "I am a Dewarist" for Dewar's White Label.Hemos tenido oportunidad de hacer un poco de cada cosa. publicidad para marcas de consumo masivo como brahma y verizon. la responsabilidad conjunta de la construcción y mantenimiento de Sema. La creación del proyecto de arte público Arte Urbano Sarmiento que va por su tercera edición y el proyecto "yo soy dewarista" para dewar's white label.

What has been your biggest challenge and how have you conquered them? Cuales han sido los desafios mas grandes que hayas tenido y como lo sobrellevaste?We take on any project with the same intensity and the same disposition, there are no big or small challenges. At the end, the idea that the work speak for itself and that people like it. The results are our personal awardsAbordamos cada proyecto con la misma intensidad y la misma disposición, no hay desafios grandes ni pequeños. Al final la idea es que el trabajo hable por si sólo y que a la gente le guste. Los resultados son nuestros premios.

What did you think about the First Ever Multidisci-plinary Conference? Que te parecio el Primer Encuen-tro Multidisciplinario?Other than to collaborate with the project, we are also co-responsible for it's organization. This first installment taught us a lot and there are other things we really want to continue doing and the make the project grow. It was a great learning experience to see and hear so many people with the same vision and interesting projects, in general, we thought it was inspiring.Además de colaborar con el proyecto somos co responsables de la organización. Este primer encuentro nos enseñó mu-cho y nos deja con muchas ganas de seguir y de crecer el proyecto. Fue muy enriquecedor ver y oir a tantas personas con visiones y proyectos interesantes, en general me parece que fue inspirador.

What do you think could improve in the future? Que piensas que pueda mejorar para un futuro?The organization can always improve, and for the EME 2012, as long as our President be there or not, and de-pending on the energy problems out country have been resolved.La organización siempre puede mejorar y para el eme 2012 según nuestro presidente estará resuelto el problema ener-gético del país.
