We in the INHS would wish to suggest that if we are to be trulycognisant with regards to our health and the health of the planet, both of which of course go hand in hand, when we use the term"Sustainable Living", we are referring to it in a way that includes all

those things I have mentioned, and more. It includes all life, and inthis context I am here referring to, and including, this planet earth.

For as was well summed up in a declaration after a meeting ofscientists from the four great international global researchprogrammes in 2001, said:

The earth system behaves as a single, self regulating system, comprised of physical, chemical, biological, and humancomponents. The interactions and feed-backs between thecomponent parts are complex and exhibit multi-scaletemporal and spatial variability.

The scientist James Lovelock refers to this living, self regulating,Earth as Gaia, and in his book,The Revenge of Gaia, he says,"Science is supposed to be objective, so why has it failed towarn us sooner of these dangers?"

He goes on to answer this question by writing,"Science is a cosy, friendly club of specialists who followtheir numerous stars; it is proud and wonderfully productive, but never certain, hampered by the persistence of incompleteworld views". It can readily be seen that the future lies as muchin our own hands, if not more so, than that of the scientists.

In conclusion I would like to direct our attention particularly tohousing and its design and refer our members to the work of thearchitect William McDonough in the area of designing Sustainablebuildings.http://www.mcdonough.com/http://www.mcdonough.com/writings.htm

Dr. John Fielder

culture and a venerable philosophicaltradition."

ACUTE DISEASE - YOUR LIFETIME HEALTHINSURANCE

"Improved health follows all eruptivediseases - if they are NOT suppressed"

DR. HERBERT M. SHELTON:ACUTE DISEASE SAVES YOU FROMTUMORS & CANCERS

A young boy was all his life, up to six and one-half years, in poorhealth. He was

underweight, suffered with frequent nose bleeds, with the beginning of each spring had bronchitis, and had gone the usual round of treatment and operations. Tonsils

and adenoids had been removed. He had been carried from one hospital to another and had had

his lungs X-rayed a number of times in search of evidence oftuberculosis.

At six and one-half years of age he developed a very severe

case of SCARLET FEVER.His life was dispaired of. The eruption was great and scalingafterwards was as great. But after this the whole condition ofthe boy changed.

His weight became normal,1.his nose bleeds ceased,2.he had no more bronchitis, and,3.upon being examined at school, was given a health

percentage of perfect.

4.

If this were an isolated case, it might be regarded as provingnothing. But it is not an isolated case. This, improved healthfollows all eruptive diseases if they are not suppressed by thetreatment.A few years ago a brilliant young English Nature Cure physician

showed from the official statistics of that country that wherever anepidemic of smallpox had existed it was always followed, in thatlocality, by a falling off in the cancer rate. ....

An acquaintance of the present author was always in very poorhealth until he had a case of smallpox. For many years thereafterhe enjoyed excellent health. ...

There is no means of estimating how many people are saved

from tumors and cancers and other degenerative diseasesby the cleansing and reconstructive work accomplished byacute disease. Were it not for acute disease, man's present mode of living wouldproduce far more physical degeneracy than exists at present, andwould produce it much earlier in life.

Herbert M. Shelton, from "Human Life - Its Philosophies & Laws"

YOUR LIFETIME HEALTH INSURANCE

You have a lifetime health insurance, did you know? Itwas issued at your birth, and is completely free. It is

called:

ACUTE DISEASE1. TOXIN-ELIMINATIONHow does this health insurance work? When acute disease (e.g. the common cold) starts -automatic cleaning of toxins has started.

2. YOU MUST SAVE ENERGYYou have one task - which is to save energy - whereveryou can. That's all.The more energy you have for healing - the faster and themore complete the automatic cleaning (toxin-elimination)will be.This process, if you allow it, will also remove any olddisease, and prevent new diseases.

Page 6: INHS Hygienic Review 2008 Issue 1

EXAMPLE

THE COMMON COLD

Let's say you feel tired & lousy, you arecoughing and have a runny nose, fever, perhaps a headache. What is this? You may conclude that you have a coldcoming on.A cold (the common cold) is an acute

disease.

WHAT TO DOThis is what you do in Natural Hygiene --you begin to try to SAVE ENERGY.

First, you decide to save muscleenergy - how? Just stop usingmost of your muscles - by stayingin bed.You decide to save some of theenergy your brain uses - how? Justtry to sleep, or try to meditate.

Stop thinking as much as possible. You decide to save someeye-energy - how? Just close youreyes, do not read - instead listento the radio, or audio tapesperhaps. You decide to save digestiveenergy - so you eat next tonothing. You do not start takingdrugs. You may have a glass ofwater, a cup of tea, perhaps aglass of vegetable juice. If you

have no appetite, better not eat atall.

All saved energy will automaticallygo to healing.

OBSERVE THE HEALINGNext - become an OBSERVER. Observeyour body - what is happening?

Do you feel a headache start, above the right eye perhaps. Howlong does it last?

1.

When it stops, is there another

little ache starting somewhere -above the left eye perhaps?

2.

When it stops, is there anotherache starting any place - behindthe right ear perhaps? Or ...

3.

Page 7: INHS Hygienic Review 2008 Issue 1

When it stops, is another achestarting --- or do you hearsomething (rumblings in thestomach)? Or does your nose getmore runny for an hour or so? Doyou have a funny taste in yourmouth for a little while perhaps?

Does your skin start breaking out?Or is your fever increasing, for awhile?

6.

You are observing your bodycleaning out and healing itself. Youare observing the HEALINGSYMPTOMS. Just be patient. Themore passive you are, the calmeryou are - the more efficient thehealing will be.

7.

Have fun! Be amazed at how smart yourbody is!

Trust your body! Your body is moreskilled than the best surgeon, smarter than the best doctor.Soon most of the toxins will beeliminated - and then the cold STOPSAUTOMATICALLY.

Thank your lucky star that you havesuch a great insurance policy --- THE

COMMON COLD!

SYMPTOMS OF ELIMINATIONDr. Alan Immerman

The concept of toxemia was developed in theearly 20th century byJohn H. Tilden, M.D.

1. STRESS: He stated

Page 8: INHS Hygienic Review 2008 Issue 1

that stress from daily habits or from theenvironment will excessively strain the body. 2. STRAIN: This strain will affect both themind and body and lead to overall exhaustionwhich Tilden called enervation. 3. ENERVATION: When enervationdevelops, the body becomes too weak to

efficiently eliminate toxins of any type throughthe liver, lungs, intestines, kidneys, or skin.

Inefficient elimination leads to retention oftoxins. 4. TOXEMIA: When there is an excessiveaccumulation of normal or abnormal chemicals, the condition is called toxemia.

5. ELIMINATION: A continual rise in toxinlevels will inevitably exceed the body's level oftolerance. When the point of intolerance is

reached, the body will attempt to eliminate thetoxins.

Symptoms of such elimination include

sneezing,coughing,vomiting,diarrhea,skin secretions, anddark urine

These symptoms are evidence of a health-building process.

They should be welcomed as signs ofvigorous healing.

If the body has been overwhelmed for toomany years with toxins, it may not have thestrength to do an effective job of cleansing andelimination. When toxins are present for a longtime, chronic illnesses will develop.(from Health Unlimited - Unleash Your Healing Power, 1989)

DO GERMS/VIRUS/BACTERIA CAUSE DISEASE?

"The cultivation of health as a defense againstdisease is far more sensible

than the mad-house effort to immunize everyonewith serums and vaccines."

GERMS by Herbert Shelton, 1928

Germs are ubiquitous. They are in the air webreathe, the food weeat, the water we drink. We cannot escapethem. We can destroythem only to a limitedextent.

It is folly to attempt toescape disease byattempting to destroy or escape germs. Once they are in thebody the physician has no means of destroying them that will not,at the same time, destroy the patient. We cannot avoid germs. We must be proof against them. We have to accept them as oneof the joys of life, and if they are really causes of disease, wecan avoid disease only by keeping ourselves in such a highstate of health that they are powerless against us.

It is not yet definitely proven that germs are essential elements inthe production of any disease. It seems probable that they areonly incidental and perhaps beneficial factors. However, thismuch is certain; whatever part they perform in the production ofdisease, germs alone can no more produce disease than a seedalone can produce a tree. Just as a seed must have fertile soil, moisture, warmth, air and sunlight, if it is to grow into a tree, sothe germ, if it is to produce disease, must find certain essentialconditions existing in the bodies of those it enters before it can dothe slightest harm. If the body is normal, if it has an abundance ofnerve force, if its blood stream is pure, if there is prompt andvigorous action of all its essential organs, no germs coming incontact with it can grow and multiply. Good health is proofagainst germs of all kinds.

MEDICAL GERM FOLLYThere is a class of individuals to which the medical professionand the bacteriologists have fastened the term "carrier." This isan individual who carries around on or in his person the germs ofsome disease. Every epidemic, we are told, develops a numberof such cases. But these people, while they are accused ofharboring so many of the deadly germs and of spreading thedisease wherever they go, themselves do not have the disease."Typhoid Mary" is still fresh in the memory of many of us. These"carriers" when found, are isolated, quarantined, kept away fromfamily, friends and work and forced to undergo many hardships. Why do not these people develop the disease they are said to bespreading among others, if the mucous membranes areespecially susceptible to such germs? Why if not for the reasonthat these membranes are susceptible to bacterial invasion onlyunder certain conditions? Medical men say they are immune butupon what does this immunity depend?

All the standard works on bacteriology state that a person mayhave germs of diphtheria, typhoid fever, tuberculosis, pneumoniaor any other disease within his body, that is, in his mouth, throat, air passages, stomach and intestines, without having the diseasethese germs are supposed to cause. Why do not these germsproduce disease? Isn't it obvious, that, whatever their part in theproduction of disease, they alone cannot produce disease?

Medical men and bacteriologists are practically a unit in declaringthat germs cannot secure a foothold in a healthy body, but that a"nidus" or "suitable soil" is essential to their genesis. They do noharm in a body that is in a normally healthy condition. If germscause disease why don't they produce disease in a healthybody? Why must the body already be diseased and its resistancelow before they can produce disease?

If there is a natural immunity to germs as the above facts andmany more easily show, if germs are powerless against ahealthy body, then, is not the logical preventive procedure thatof finding out the factors upon which immunizing health dependsand cultivate these? The cultivation of health as a defenseagainst disease is far more sensible than the mad-house effort toimmunize everyone with serums and vaccines.

GERMS ARE POWERLESS AGAINST HEALTHY BODIES

The natural antiseptics of the body are found within the bodyitself when it is not impaired, and it is maintained in a normalstate by the proper use of those eternal elements of hygiene -

sun,air,water,proper food,muscular exercise, etc.

Page 12: INHS Hygienic Review 2008 Issue 1

Investigations in thebacteriological laboratorythrow no light on theconditions in the body whichpermit the germs to growor which prevent them fromgrowing. They tell us of afew germs which, it isclaimed, are the activeagents in disease but they tell us nothing of the conditions whichpermit these agents to become active. They grow in thoseconditions and only in those conditions of life which give rise tosuch complaints as indigestion, catarrh, etc.

The view I would put before the reader is that disease iscaused, not by the germ, but by the state of the body thatallows the germ to flourish. And this condition of the organismor any part of it which renders possible the growth of the germthercin is the much sought for "filterable virus." It is the outgrowthof violations of the laws of life and is no chance or haphazardcondition.

We also favor the view so long stressed by Dr. Tilden, and nowmade feasible by the knowledge of the transmutability of thevarious forms of germs, that the disease condition presentdetermines the morphology of the germ and not vice versa. Thegerm takes on a form and character in keeping with itsenvironment; - environment does not change to conform to thegerm.

It is admitted that the body is built to offer very powerfulresistance to the entrance of germs.

The skin is, if unbroken, impermeable by them. The internal skin, or mucous membrane lining all the cavities of

the body which communicate either directly or indirectly with theoutside world, if unbroken, is invulnerable to them.

The normal secretions of these membranes are germicidal. There is no susceptibility on the part of any healthy organ, to

bacterial injury. It is obvious that, living in a world swarming with microbes, ifthese cause disease, man must have powerful resistance tothem, else he would have perished long ago.

EXPERIMENTSIn Physical Culture for May 1919 is an article by John B.Fraser, M.D., G.M., entitled "Do Germs Cause Disease?"giving an account of some experiments in this connection carriedout in Toronto during the period between 1911 and 1918. Hesays:

"In an earnest endeavor todetermine whether germsare dangerous, Torontohas taken an honorable

part. In solving this

Page 13: INHS Hygienic Review 2008 Issue 1

question the first threeyears, 1911-12-13, wasspent in studying a single point, viz. When does the germappear?' The verdict was after the onset of disease; and thisfact led to the supposition that germs were simply a by-productof disease, and possibly harmless."In 1914 a small group of citizens undertook to prove the latterpoint by adopting Hunter's method of direct action, viz.,incorporating fresh vigorous germs in food and drink and thenusing that food in the ordinary way. ...

"The first experiment made was taking fifty thousand diphtheria

germs in water, and after a few days suspense and no sign ofthe disease it was considered that the danger had passed. Thereason for choosing diphtheria germs for the first experimentwas that in aconite, we had an especially reliable remedy foraborting the disease, providing it showed signs of developing. In the second experiment, one hundred and fifty thousanddiphtheria germs were used in milk, and again no signs ofdiphtheria appeared. In the third experiment, over one million diphtheria germs wereused in food without producing any sign of the disease. ...

"Another series of experiments were carried out with typhoid

germs, especial care being taken to infect distilled water, naturalmilk (not pasturized); bread, meat, fish, potatoes, etc., etc., withmillions of the most vigorous germs that could be incubated, and but for the knowledge that they had been taken, one wouldhave known nothing about it.

"Another series of tests were made with the dreaded meningitisgerms, and as the germs are believed to develop mainly in themucous membranes of the nostrils, especial pains were taken toswab millions of the germs over the floor and sides of thenostrils, into the turbinated sinuses, over the tonsils, under thetongue, and back of the throat. In addition to these tests other

tests were made in food and drink—millions of germs in eachcase, and yet no trace of the disease appeared.

"The experiments with thetuberculosis germs werecarried out in a differentway - more time was givenbetween the experimentsso as to allow the germs todevelop; for clinicalevidence has shown thatthis disease may remain latent, or imperfectly developed for

months. Consequently it meant months of watching and waitingbefore one could be positive that the germs would not develop.

"Here again millions of germs were used in water, milk, andfood of various kinds; every facility was given for the germs todevelop as far as time and virility, numbers, and variety of food

Page 14: INHS Hygienic Review 2008 Issue 1

and drink was concerned; and as almost five years haveelapsed since the experiment with T. B. began and no evidenceof the disease has appeared I think we are justified in the beliefthat the germs are harmless. In addition to those experimentscombinations of germs were used, such as typhoid andpneumonia, meningitis and typhoid, pneumonia and diphtheria, etc., etc., but no evidence of disease followed.

"During the years 1914-15-16-17-18 over one hundred and fiftyexperiments were carried out carefuly and scientifically and yetabsolutely no signs of disease followed."

from H.M. Shelton - Human Life Its Philosophies and Laws, 1928

"Germs are ubiquitous. They are in the airwe breathe, the food we eat, the water

we drink. We cannot escape them."

THE CAUSES OF DISEASE by Herbert Shelton, 1928

If cells that are kept clean and properly nourished never grow old in the sensethat they lose their vitality; and in the human body there are organs andfunctions that, when normal, completely rid the body of waste and toxins; andanother process that, when normal, keeps the cells supplied with a freshsupply of nutrient material - what impairs these organs and functions so thatthe cells do grow old, do lose their vitality and die? It is assumed by somebiologists, that this impairment is a necessary result of the community action ofthe cells of the body.

Cells in the laboratory are killed by starvation and by poisoning. Why assumethat their death in the body is due to other causes?

The uneliminated products of metabolism, plus the breaking down of cells in disease, plus toxins absorbed from without,

are as capable of destroying cells in the body as in the scientist's test tube.

Drugs, serums, vaccines, anti-toxins, etc., that are taken into the body, inany manner, for any purpose, kill cells and cripple organs.Starvation of the cells resulting from eating denatured food or from impaireddigestion and assimilation is capable of killing cells in the body.

MANY CAUSES OF EACH DISEASEIn considering the causation of diseaseit is important that we keep in mindthat the antecedents of every so-calleddisease are many and not just one. Asan instance, it is asserted that irritationis the cause of tumors, but irritationalone will not produce a tumor whilethe number of sites or localities of

Page 15: INHS Hygienic Review 2008 Issue 1

man's or woman's bodies that aresubject to constant irritation which do not develop tumors are as infinity to one, when compared with the seats of irritation which do become tumors. Irritationis a cause and not the cause. It contributes to the production of a tumor. It isbut one of a number of correlated factors which collectively constitute cause. Itis an erroneous practice which men indulge in when they single out one ofthese correlates and say that it is the cause of cancer,

Headache is a symptom that may be produced by many different causes.A cold may be due to a simple indigestion, or to exposure, or to overwork, orto loss of sleep. But a simple indigestion is alone insufficient to produce a cold.Exposure, overwork, loss of sleep; neither of these alone can produce a cold.A cold is an evolution out of a number of correlated causes.

GERMSIt is said that a certain germ causes a certain disease. This theory will bediscussed later. At this point I only desire to call your attention to the fact that ifgerms are a cause of disease, they do not constitute the cause of disease. There are a number of antecedent causes and their effects which must bepresent before the germs can enter into the cause. At most they are butsecondary and never primary causes. If we grant them a place in the causationof disease we must recognize that they are but one of a number of correlatedcauses which collectively constitute the cause. It is a mistake to single out oneparticular correlate and hold it responsible for the disease.

DISEASE IS A COMPLEX EFFECTDisease is not a simple, but a complex effect, not of one antecedent but ofmany. It is, as Dr. Tilden declares, "the sum of a multitude of elements."Individuals differ, the combination of causes differ in each individual case ofdisease, and hence, each supposed specific disease differs—no two casesare alike.

Two men are out hunting and are caught in a cold rain-storm. They aredrenched and are exposed to the rain and cold for hours. The followingday one has pneumonia, the other arthritis.A mother dies. Her children grieve deeply and long for thoir mother. Oneof them suffers a "nervous collapse;" the other develops Bright'sdisease.A group of people have a feast. They eat and drink. One develops adiarrhea, one develops typhoid, another has pleurisy, still another hasrheumatism and another is apparently unharmed. One man indulges his sex appetite excessively and becomes extremelynervous. Another man worries over his business and becomes equallynervous.

Consider these facts and hundreds more like them and you see that differentcauses acting on the body may produce the same result while the samecauses acting on different bodies, or on the same body at different times mayproduce different results. Yet these things are true only because the correlatesare different. If the correlated causes were identical in a thousand cases, thena heavy meal would, in conjunction with these correlates, cause the samedifficulty in each of the thousand cases. These elemental factors in thecausation of disease are legion. The idea that there are specific causes forspecific diseases is purely fallacious. Every so-called disease is a river thewaters of which are derived from many tributaries.

This being true, what is to be thought of a mode of treatment which attempts todry up the river ("cure" the disease) by destroying one of its tributaries (causalelements)? What are we to think of the effort to find a "unitary entity" which willimmunize one against a multiplicity of causes? Is it not true, as Dr. Tilden says,

Page 16: INHS Hygienic Review 2008 Issue 1

that "a multiple causation must be met by an opposing treatmentco-equal in elemental constituents?"

With these few preliminary remarks we will address ourselves to a briefconsideration of the causes of disease, making no apologies for the order inwhich they are treated.

"Every so-called disease is a river, the waters ofwhich are derived from many tributaries."

DISEASE-CAUSE #1: ENERVATIONVigorous health and a sound constitution is the natural and normal condition ofman. Anything below this represents a stage of degeneracy or impaired health.

From the topmost peak of bodily soundness to the lowest depths of physicaldepravity is a long and progressive decline brought about by adequatedegenerating causes. The lowest depths of physical rottenness are notreached quickly or suddenly. Over the whole decline there are a number ofsuccessive stages that have to be passed through in their natural order.

The impairment of health is due to violation of the laws of life in our voluntaryhabits. To make this statement clear, let me first explain that the functions ofthe human organism are operated by and under control of a force which wecall nerve force, because it resides in and is distributed by the nervous system.

Without this force, organic function is impossible. When nerve force isabundant, bodily functions are vigorous; and when it is low they are impaired.

COMPARE THE BODY TO AN AUTOMOBILEWe might compare the body to anautomobile and the nervous system toits storage battery. If the storage

battery is well charged and the wiring isin good order, the car has plenty ofspark, bright lights and an efficientstarter. But, if the battery is low and thespark is poor, the lights are dim and thestarter weak. Indeed, the starter may not be able to turn the engine over, andthe battery may be so low that the car cannot be run and the lights burned atthe same time. The human body is not capable of generating an unlimitedsupply of nervous energy.

Often in modern life we consume our energies faster than we recuperate them,so that our vital or nervous batteries run low Then, just as a low battery meanspoor spark, dim lights and a useless starter on our cars, so lack of nervousenergies in the human body lower the functional efficiency of all its organs.Digestion is impaired, secretion and excretion are checked, elimination lags.

Page 17: INHS Hygienic Review 2008 Issue 1

This condition we call Enervation.

from H.M. Shelton - Human Life Its Philosophies and Laws, 1928

What are the causes of disease?

"It is folly to attempt to escape disease by attempting todestroy or escape germs."

Also read Dr. Fielder: BACTERIA & VIRUS - THE CONTAGION QUESTION

CONTAGION"With the type of lifestyle we live along with thecontinual ingestion of medications even though theymay be considered as relatively harmless i.e. theproprietary drugs such as aspirin, along with which wehave the social drugs of tobacco, tea, alcohol, coffeeetc., we are continually depriving our bodies ofsufficient energy to carry out normal and naturalmaintenance. Add to that the stress of daily life intoday's society, life in the "fast" lane, and we have ascenario well placed requiring the help of our friendsthe bacteria, to which we could also add "virus".Given the above scenario it can readily be observedthat the average person is bordering upon requiring tobe healed (via acute disease) almost every day. Thatit requires only a very gentle push to bring this about. And this push is referred to as "contagion"

FASTING - 9 BASIC STEPS

"Let me warn that fasting is a much more complicatedprocess than generally realized, even by some of its

ardent advocates."

CORRECT OR INCORRECT FASTING - DOES IT MATTER?

Below Dr. Shelton writes about how to get the most optimal results fromfasting. And that there is nothing magical about fasting.

The only way to get remarkable healing & regeneration results is tounderstand that fasting is just a complete body rest. Do not interfere, insteadrespect the complete rest! (Avoid enemas!)

In INHS we recommend that unsupervised (water-only) fasts should be

max 3 days, for safety-reasons. Follow with a green juice diet for increaseddetoxification.

NEW UNDERSTANDING - NEW TOXIC DANGERS:

Why "safety-reasons"? - Because - at least in USA and otherindustrialized countries - today people are more toxic than ever before, which also makes them deficient. And with too high toxicity & deficiency, wemust avoid prolonged fasting. Instead we must prepare for fasting with rawfoods or raw juices. This will make the fasting safe!

EXAMPLE for new-comers: Start out with a one-day fast, and break it

correctly on raw foods or raw juices, followed by a raw diet (or almost-raw).Repeat the 1-day fast a couple of times. Then try a 2-day fast, a couple oftimes - then a 3-day fast. Inbetween a mainly-raw diet (with veggies &animal foods).

THE LATEST UNDERSTANDING: Raw foods + short fasts is safer &will give better results than a long fast (for new-beginners). Fasting is moredifficult today, than during the mid-1900's!! (At least for typical Westerners, who nowadays are both too toxic & deficient.)

CORRECT FASTING

Fasting - Nine Basic Steps

Let me warn emphatically that fasting is a much more complicatedprocess than generally realized even by some of its ardent advocates. Itinvolves much more than merely going without food.

There is an art to fasting as well as a science of fasting. The uses offasting seem, at times, almost unlimited. Its inconveniences are notgreat, its dangers are few and rarely seen. Yet for the most satisfactoryresults it must be conducted in accordance with a few well-ascertainedrules and techniques by an experienced man.It is not a process to be left to the guidance of anyone of meagerknowledge or no experience in conducting fasts.

"There is an art to fasting, as well as ascience of fasting."

Paradoxically, less supervision of thefast is required in acute disease than inchronic disease. When disease is theresult of years of wrong life and if thecondition of the patient is one of graveweakness, with severe organicimpairment, much skill will be requiredto take the individual through a fast ofsufficient duration to accomplish thedesired results.

In such situations, it would be

hazardous to rely on inexperienced anduntrained men. I am aware that thereare some untrained laymen attempting to conduct fasts. I believe it isvitally important to investigate beforehand to be sure you have the bestand most experienced man available. In this connection I must pointout also that, while there are several schools of so-called healingrecognized by law in this country, few of the practitioners of any ofthese schools have any knowledge of and experience with fasting. Wecannot select any doctor at random, without knowing his specialtraining, to supervise a fast.

It is a fundamental rule of hygienic practice that all the needs of normal

physiology are present in states of illness. And in periods of abstinencethey must be met according to a degree of need and functional ability,to the end that organic and functional integrity may be preserved or

Page 21: INHS Hygienic Review 2008 Issue 1

restored. Let us understand this clearly: when we fast we do not alsocease to breathe or to take water. There is never an absence of needfor oxygen; we continue to become thirsty at intervals and we drink.Fasting is abstinence from food, not abstinence from all of the essentialsof life. And it is abstinence from food only in the sense that we abstain

from taking in the raw materials of nutrition for a period of time, whilethe body draws on its stored-up supplies. We still need and use food.

Fasting is not suspended animation. Indeed, although it is a period ofgreatly reduced activity, some of the processes of life are actuallyaccelerated during periods of abstinence. The ordinary needs of life:food, air, water, warmth, sunshine, activity, rest, sleep, cleanliness, poise of mind. remain basic needs of the fasting organism.

"The techniques of fasting are significant andshould be recognized and understood by

anyone interested in this field."

Food (nutriment) with which to sustain the functioning tissues of thebody is obtained from the reserve stores within the body. Water istaken according to the demands of thirst: warmth is required so thatthe body does not become chilled; sunshine is needed in keeping withthe somewhat reduced metabolic activities of life; cleanliness is still arequirement; sleep is a necessity; mental and emotional stabilization isespecially important.

This means that the techniques of fasting are significant and should atleast, in a broad general sense, be recognized and understood by

anyone interested in this field or contemplating a fast.Where do these techniques begin? Some say they should begin longbefore the fast starts—with the earliest stages of fast preparation!

CORRECT FASTING TECHNIQUES

1. PREPARATION

Many complicated plans have been designed to prepare the individual orpatient for a fast. Some of these involve a period on special foodsintended to empty the intestinal tract of material before the fast isstarted. Others are rituals involving fasting a day, eating two days, fasting two days, eating four days, and so on in this manner, with thegoal of gradually preparing one for a fast of considerable length. Allsuch plans are wasteful of the patient's time and money. since theyrevolve around the idea of feeding at a time when a fast is needed. Asthere is no reason why one may not go into a fast abruptly and withoutthese rituals, they are not recommended here. The truly essentialpreparation is in the mental and emotional attitudes.

If you can understand the wisdom and rationality of fasting, and ridyour mind of all fear of this perfectly normal process, you can fast withease. Satisfy yourself that the fast will prove to be highly beneficial andenter upon it without fear and anxiety. Mental unrest and fear canmake fasting difficult or impossible in cases in which it would otherwiseprove of the greatest possible benefit.

When I first started my work. I served for a few months under thedirection of Milo A. Crane. M.D., who conducted the Crane Sanitariums

Page 22: INHS Hygienic Review 2008 Issue 1

in Elmhurst. Illinois. Dr. Crane never placed a patient on a fast if thepatient feared it. lnstead, he would put him on a diet and permit him tomingle with the other patients. Usually within a few days the patientwould ask if he could not fast.

This is one of the advantages of being with others. One sees andrealizes that they are not starving but actually benefiting. Fears vanishbefore reality.

"If you rid your mind of all fear of thisperfectly normal process, you can fast with

ease."

2. RESTThe techniques of fasting are based on simple physiological principles. They do not involve the need for nor the use of any measures that areforeign to the regular needs of the living organism. Treatments, specialmodalities, and forcing measures have no place in fasting. The mostimportant technique of the fast is that of reducing activity, mental, sensory, and physical. to a bare minimum, so that the energy of thefaster may be conserved and his healing and excretory processes maybe accelerated.

The faster should bear in mind the simple rule of compensation. Inorder to expend on one side, nature must conserve on the other. What

he does not expend in unneeded activity is available for use inelimination and repair.

Physical rest is secured by ceasing physical activities, by resting inbed, by relaxing. Physical activities expend considerable energyand prevent the recuperation of energy that is essential torestoration of normal nerve energy.Mental rest is secured by curtailing mental activities andemotional unrest. Debating highly controversial issues is harmful.Allowing oneself to become upset or involved in trivial disputes ofany nature is harmful. Emotional poise is the secret of mentalrest. It is not always easy for the faster to cease worrying or to

overcome anxiety, but everything constructive should be done toprovide for tranquility.Sensory rest is secured by retiring to a quiet place and avoidinguse of the eyes in reading, viewing television, going to the moviesor similar eye-straining activities. Noise is especially destructiveof poise and wasteful of energy. Quiet, peace, and sensoryinactivity provide for conservation of energy.

In using rest, however, we do not urge a state of suspended animationnor dormancy, nor a state of embryonic passivity. What is sought hereis the absence of strain, the physical sense of peace by which restbecomes possible.

Page 23: INHS Hygienic Review 2008 Issue 1

Rest does not heal, but is one of the essentials of efficient healing, aswell as in maintaining health. It is of great value to the enervated andtoxemic. Not tonics and stimulants, not sedation and tranquilization, norhypnotization, but rest is the great need of the organism that has beenlashed into impotency by stimulation and excesses in food, sex,

emotional unrest, work and the various deficiencies from which mansuffers.

Organs that have been lashed into impotency by overwork andstimulation may be rested into full functioning vigor. Added stimulation, whatever its nature, only further depletes them.

Read more about resting during fasting here, by Dr. Shelton.

3. ACTIVITYThe faster rests during the time he abstains from food for the reasonthat in the normal exercise of the functions of life, feeding and activity

should balance each other. There are authorities who permit theirfasters to take long walks and require them to take daily exercise ofvarious kinds. In reducing fasts, some moderate exercise, undersupervision is permissible. For other fasts I believe even moderateexercising is a needless expenditure of energy and a waste of reserves.Activity should be geared to the food eaten. When no food is taken, activities should be reduced to a minimum. Rest is the need, notexpenditure.

"The feet, in particular, should be keptwarm."

4. WARMTHA faster's resistance to cold is likely to be lower than that of the person

who is eating regularly. He chills easily. Chilling inhibits elimination, increases the discomforts of the faster and causes a more rapidutilization of reserves. It is important, therefore, that the faster keepwarm. This is necessary even in July and August. The feet, in particular, should be kept warm. Cold feet will prevent the faster from sleeping.

5. WATERThe faster will be thirsty at intervals, though rarely as often as when hewas eating. The normal demand for water should be met with the purestwater available. Mineral waters and waters with a bad taste are notadvisable:

A soft spring water, rain water, distilled water, filtered water orany water that is free of impurities is acceptable.

Page 24: INHS Hygienic Review 2008 Issue 1

It should be taken only as thirst demands. There is nothing to be gainedby drinking large quantities of water, despite a lack of demand for this,on the theory that this flushes the system. It is true that the morewater one drinks the more fluid will the kidneys excrete, but this doesnot represent an increase of elimination of waste. Indeed it may result

in a lessening of the amount of waste excreted.

In summer, there may be a desire to drink cold water. Cool water isexcellent, but very cold or ice water may slow down and retardrecovery. Hot water may be relished under certain conditions more thancold water or water at room temperature. In some cases hot water maybe sipped in moderation with the advice or permission of thesupervisor; in others its use is inadvisable.

6. BATHINGThere is the same need for cleanliness while fasting as while eating.

Bathing should be performed daily or as often as needed. The bathshould be of a character to cause the least amount of energyexpenditure. To insure this the following requirements should beobserved.

The bath should be of short duration. The faster should notremain long under the shower or in the tub. The common practiceof soaking for long periods in water is enervating and should beavoided.

a.

Bath water should be lukewarm, neither hot nor cold. It requiresconsiderable energy expenditure to resist both heat and cold. Thecloser the temperature of the bath water is to the temperature ofthe body, the less energy expenditure will be occasioned. Bear in

mind, always, that bathing is for cleanliness and not for anyalleged therapeutic effects. Bathe quickly and get out of thewater.

b.

If the faster is very weak and is unable to take his or her ownbath, a sponge bath in bed may be given by an assistant.

c.

"Enemas, purges, & over-drinking enervatethe faster and tend to inhibit elimination.

These techniques are harmful and should beavoided. "

7. SUNBATHINGSunshine is an essential nutrient factor in both plant and animalnutrition and is helpful while fasting. It should not be thought of as acure, for it is not, but as a normal element in the regular nutritionalprocesses of life. Its role in calcium metabolism is especially important, but it is also important in phosphorus utilization and in assuringstrength of the muscles. Indeed, it serves several important purposes inthe normal processes of life and is of far greater importance to us than

we generally realize.

Unless overdone, sunbathing results in relaxation and no measurableexpenditure of energy. If the sun is too hot, if the bath is too prolonged,if getting to and from the solarium is too taxing on the patient, any ofthese factors may result in an excessive expenditure of energy. It isnecessary to "temper the wind to the shorn lamb" in supervising the

Page 25: INHS Hygienic Review 2008 Issue 1

sunbathing. To accomplish this, the following rules should be observed:

Take the sunbath in the early morning while it is still cool, or inthe late afternoon during the summer. In mild weather, when it isnot hot at midday, a sunbath may be taken at any time of the day

that the temperature is comfortable.Start the sunbath with five minutes of exposure for the front ofthe body and five minutes for the back. On the second day thismay be increased to six minutes on each side. Increase theexposure one minute a day for each side, to a maximum of thirtyminutes for each surface. It will be well to level off at thisexposure time.If the fast is continued beyond twenty days, reduce the exposureto about eight minutes on front and eight minutes on the rearsurfaces, and continue this exposure until after the fast is broken. At any time if the sunbath leaves the faster weak or irritated, theduration of the exposure should be reduced. Avoid overdoing.

PURGES &FORCING

MEASURESe.g.

delusions!!

8. PURGESIt is sometimes claimed, completely erroneously in my opinion, thatduring the fast, it is necessary to keep the bowels, kidneys and skinactive to carry away the toxins released into the circulation by theliquidation of tissue. Daily enemas or saline purges are advised to cleanthe bowels, much water drinking and even diuretics are advised to keepthe kidneys active; sweat baths are employed to keep the skin active.

All of these forcing measures are not only unnecessary, they areactually hurtful. There is nothing that so safely and so certainlyincreases kidney action as the fast itself. The bowels empty themselvesduring a fast as often as there is a need for them to do so. If no needarises, they take a long-needed rest. The skin is not an eliminatingorgan and sweat baths are delusions. These measures further

enervate the faster and [ WASTING NERVE ENERGY ]

Page 26: INHS Hygienic Review 2008 Issue 1

tend to inhibit rather than accelerate elimination. [ STOPPINGTHE DETOX ]These suggested techniques are harmful and should be avoided.

AVOID ENEMAS!

Read more about enemas here

9. SUFFERINGIt has been said that the fast should not be continued when the faster issuffering greatly, as in some general health impairment. The fact is thatit is precisely under these circumstances that digestive and assimilativepowers are lowest. The greater the suffering the less able is the suffererto take and digest food. When the discomfort passes, the practitionerwill know when to feed the patient.

Fasting tends to end suffering and the faster suffering may expect relief

in a much shorter time if he continues to fast than if he breaks the fast.

Fasting Can Save Your Life, 1964,Dr. Herbert M. Shelton

NEW IMPROVED UNDERSTANDINGSince 1964, when Shelton's text was written, some new important understandingshave been discussed on INHS email list.

ENOUGH ENERGY: Dr. Fielder has described the improved results, andmore complete healing, he is getting if he waits for the first cold to start, before allowing the patient to start fasting. An excellent time to start fastingmay be when we have a cold (or acute disease). In acute disease weusually lose our appetite, and feel tired --- so actually the body itself tells usto "stop eating" and "go to bed".

1.

NEW DRUG DANGERS: Dr. Bass has described the strange effects that

new types of prescription drugs have caused in some of his patients whilefasting, effects he has not seen before. E.g. extreme temperatures (fromcertain antibiotics). Medical research is continually creating drugs that arestronger, more toxic and more dangerous. Dr. Fielder has published a listof drugs that can cause deaths while fasting, without warning. (Examples:the birth-control pill, cortisone, marijuana.)

2.

TOXIC AIR DANGERS: Dr. Bass has described his and Dr. Cursio'sobservations that toxins in the air can kill migrating birds. Birds fast when

3.

Page 27: INHS Hygienic Review 2008 Issue 1

migrating. Cursio observed migrating birds falling dead from the sky, whenpassing over New York. So, perhaps we better go to a place with pristineair while fasting.

DEFICIENCY DANGERS: We have heard stories of people, who havehave been so deficient that they suffered serious damage while fasting.E.g. brain damage (Alzheimers) in vegans, or damage to the eyes

(blindness) in a vegetarian who didn't rest. (Bodies of vegans, & sometimesvegetarians, can be very deficient in fats & proteins.) Conclusion: Thosewho are deficient should never fast.

7.

NOT A GOOD WEIGHT-LOSS TOOL: Drs. Fielder & Goldberg have beenwarning us repeatedly: Watch out for the "fasting and feasting syndrome"!(What is this? Sometimes people water-only-fast annually for weight-loss,but inbetween they feast, =over-eat on unhealthy foods, and gain lots ofweight. A negative jo-jo effect.) Fasting must be followed by strict improveddiet, otherwise you will gain weight quickly. After fasting the body has amore difficult time losing weight, has more efficient nutrient-uptake. If youcannot control your overeating, better not fast.

8.

TODAY FASTING IS MORE DIFFICULT: People are so toxic nowadaysthat ignorant fasting can be dangerous. Nowadays the blood of babies maycontain hundreds of toxins. Even supervised fasting is more difficult than 50years ago. It is usually safer for amateurs to go on a veggie juice diet or araw diet, than to fast without professional supervision.

9.

INSTEAD OF FASTING --- JUICE DIETS, OR RAW DIETSNote that there are other slower methods that are safer for amateurs, andthat usually give the same result - e.g. green juice-diets while resting (avoid

fruit-juices!), or raw diets while resting.

"Fasting is not a process to be left to the guidance ofanyone of meager knowledge."

FASTING

"Fasting is primarily a rest of theorganism."

WHY DO WE FAST?---- ANSWER: REST, REST, REST

Rest the digestive system= drink only water!

DOES FASTING CURE DISEASE?by Dr. H.M. Shelton, 1934

The Hygienic System is not a system of treating and curing"disease" and "disorder." It does not recognize the existence ofhundreds, or thousands, of "diseases," but regards all of these manyso-called "diseases" as varying expressions of the same thing. ...

Fasting is primarily a rest of the organism. There is no condition of"disease" in which rest of the vital organs is not of benefit to thewhole organism. Rest gives all of the organs an opportunity torepair their damaged structures. Rest affords to organs that havebeen lashed into impotency by overstimulation, an opportunity torecuperate their substances and forces. ...

Fasting does not remove the toxins. This is done by the excretoryfunctions of the body. Fasting only affords them the opportunity toperfect their work. ...

Fasting does not do anything. It really stops the doing. ...

NO, FASTING JUST GIVES THE BODY A REST!

To sum up, fasting, by affording the organs of the body a rest,by withholding raw materials and by stopping the inflow ofdecomposition-poisons from the alvine canal,

permits the repair and recuperation of the organs of thebody.

Fasting is not a cure; it will not cure any "disease." ...

A period of abstinence, or of very light eating, with rest in bed, andthe giving up of enervating habits, mental and physical, will allownature to eliminate the accumulated toxins; after which, ifenervating habits are given up, and rational living habits adopted, good health will evolve and will be maintained so long as theindividual continues to live correctly. ...

We do not claim that fasting cures disease, but simply that itenables the organism to heal itself. What, then, does fasting do?

It gives the vital organs a complete rest.1.It stops the intake of foods that decompose in the intestinesand further poison the body.

2.

It empties the digestive tract and disposes of putrefactivebacteria.

3.

It gives the organs of elimination an opportunity to catch upwith their work and promotes elimination.

4.

It re-establishes normal physiological chemistry and normalsecretions.

5.

It promotes the breaking down and absorption of exudates, effusions, deposits, "diseased" tissues, and abnormal growths.

6.

It restores a youthful condition of the cells and tissues and

rejuvenates the body.

7.

It permits the conservation and re-canalization of energy. ...8.

"ERRORS" IN HYGIENE?

"Things got progressively worse for all of us. The

children kept getting anemic in spite of all my bestraw efforts."

FAMILY DEVELOPED SERIOUS DEFICIENCY ONRAW VEGAN/FRUITARIAN DIET- WHAT IS THE BEST RECOVERY FROM "naturalhygienic" PROBLEM-DIETS?

IMPORTANT - Make certain you are knowledgeable before going onan all-plant diet with children! Raw or not.Note: All-raw & non-toxic diets are usually super-healthy, except for deficient diets = mainly

"long-term" vegan/fruitarian diets.

ANALYSIS

WHAT WAS THE REAL PROBLEM?Below is an email from a natural hygienist with children, who all gotin trouble on a raw vegan/fruitarian diet = 100% all-raw & all-plantdiet. And they still were in trouble in 5-08, despite combined effortsfrom conventional & alternative specialists. This family obviously thought that "raw" was their main problem. The mother calls their story "OUR JOURNEY TO RAW ANDBACK".This is an error according to INHS, since "raw" is not the problem.A "cooked" vegan/fruitarian diet is often worse.Again, the problem is NOT "all-raw" --- the problem is "long-termvegan/fruitarian".

"All-plant" is a problem, long-term.(Short-term it is fine, e.g. excellent for health

recovery.)

Too much fruit is a problem. Too little animal foods is a

problem, long-term. All-raw is fine, an optimal diet

choice. (There are a few exceptions.)

WHY DID THEY THINK THE DIETWAS HEALTH-PROMOTING?Over time, several branches of NH has developed. Allrecommending raw foods. But - two of these branches fell in the trap of long-term 100%

all-plant diets. One of those branches equates the ideal diet with veganism (ANHS/NHA - started in the1930's), another branch says that fruitarianism is the ideal (HLI - influenced by TC Fry & A.Ehret).

The remaining 2 branches (e.g. INHS) always recommended someanimal foods (as vegetarianism or omnivorism), since the 1950's.So, only part of Natural Hygiene is responsible for the currentsituation.Because of the many books, websites and videos produced overtime in these branches of NH, recommending 100% all-plant dietsand telling people to avoid animal foods completely - and with themessage spreading - we have this unfortunate situation today:Many people do uncritically believe in the vegan/fruitarianmessage, practice it, and then get surprised and may panic whensomething goes wrong. Many hygienists have known about this ERROR IN (2 branches of)HYGIENE since the 1950's, perhaps from getting in health troublethemselves - but the error is still alive & well.(Why? Does veganism have a religious quality to it?)

That's why we in INHS are warning once again, with the belowemail example.

Also, read more about THE CASE AGAINST VEGANISM on INHSwebsite.

WHEN/IF IN TROUBLE - WHAT SHOULD WE DO NEXT?1. The first question raised here is: why can it be so dangerous? How come serious mineral deficiencies AS WELL AS serious toxicmineral excesses resulted? Why serious yeast problems? Why somany problems? We made a short interview with Dr. Bass, who isthe Natural Hygiene doctor who has been most active, fordecades, warning about known consequences of "strict &long-term" veganism and fruitarianism. (Short-term is fine.)

2. The second question that is raised is - how can a person, whogot in serious trouble from long-term fruitarianism/veganism,recover? a. Must we consult with medical doctors? b. Must the recovery go over cooked foods andsupplements? c. Or is this better: another raw diet, an better, moreadequate raw diet?Dr. Bass answers these questions in the audio.

3. The most important question is: what should they have doneinstead?

What should vegans/fruitarians do, when/if they get in deficiency-trouble? (On all-raw diets or not.) What should they not do?We will write more about this in another article.

Here the interview with Dr. Bass (6-08) follows as a mp3 audio file.(Sorry, the quality is not optimal.)

OUR JOURNEY TO RAW AND BACKfrom INHS email list member

5/31/2008 9:28 AM (YahooGroups/inhs)

EMAIL:I haven't visited this forum in eons, and I just checked in briefly tosee what's going on currently in the raw world. I'm happy to seesome discussion on the safety of the raw diet.

I thought I'd share my experiences to add an additional perspective.

I was a raw foodist for several years. I first learned about raw foodswhile on a 2 week semi-fast (the Master Cleanse) and jumped rightinto a 100% raw diet (very gourmet in the early months and movedto a 80-10-10 raw vegan diet following Doug Graham's approach.I felt awesome for 6 months, then ate an average cooked meal. Ithen experienced major food addictions for the first time in my life.

The next 2 years I was about 80% raw, but it was a constantstruggle. In this time, my children's diets changed radically to amostly raw fruitarian diet. They were both under 7 at the time.

But things got progressively worse for all of us. The children keptgetting anemic in spite of all my best raw efforts.

Then they started to exhibit symptoms of ADHD, Aspergers, andTourettes (all in the autism-spectrum) along with various otherphysical, mental & emotional difficulties. I too have felt myselfgoing downhill with many symptoms similar to the children --problems with memory, focus, eyesight, fatigue, heat &hydration regulation, anger control, mental fog, overwhelmetc. It's been scary -- feels like I'm losing myself.

DEFICIENCIESWe've seen doctors (naturally-oriented doctors who I trust) andhave had quite a few blood and hair tests. Very enlightning. A "HairElements" test can be ordered from Doctor's Data without a doctor'sinvolvement through Direct Laboratory Services for around $100(or less if my memory serves me). With this, I discovered that weare all quite deficient in the following trace minerals: calcium, magnesium, manganese, molybdenum, iodine, lithium, cobalt, and germanium. My doctor has also determined throughother tests and assessments that we are low in the B vitamins, vitamin D (mine is "off-the-chart" low), and essential fattyacids. While calcium & protein is low, this is likely a result of the

other deficiencies.

I now realize, that for us, fruit, (previously 80% of our diet) hascreated a HUGE yeast problem which we are struggling to get

Page 35: INHS Hygienic Review 2008 Issue 1

under control. We went on the Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD),used with great effect to control and even reverse autism-spectrumdisorders. It was not easy to do, as it meant removing everythingthat could feed the yeast in digestively impaired people.

This of course meant eliminating all sugars and starch/grains(weren't eating anyway), but also removing all fruits and rawveggies in the early stages. It meant getting nutrients from chickenbroth and cooked veggies the first few days and adding new cookedfoods one at a time to see if that particular food was tolerable.Though it meant swallowing my pride and admitting that the rawlife may not be the "be-all-end-all", this diet was the beginning ofour recovery. We still don't eat sugars or grains/legumes and we'venow worked up to being able to digest most cooked and raw fruits &veggies (raw being harder for us to digest). And we now eat eggs, butter and meat. In fact, I love it. I honor it and the animal that hasproduced it or given its life. I feel nourished by it. But we are not

yet well and are still struggling to get our digestive system back ontrack.

We are lactose/casein intolerant and can only eat very limitedamounts of dairy (we make 24 hour cultured yogurt from raworganic milk to rebuild our intestinal flora). Our symptoms areworse when we eat more than a bit of fruit or any of the fruits orveggies which have even a moderate amount of phenols (which wedon't digest well). We can only manage to digest limited amounts ofsulphur foods (such as onions which give much needed flavor to abland diet).

We do better if we take digestive enzymes before each meal to helpto digest the carbohydrates in fruits/veggies, proteins/fats in allfoods, and the phenols. My children can't get to sleep at night(laying awake 3-5 hours) unless they take Melatonin (which anormal healthy body produces naturally). We have to take tons ofsupplements just to manage our symptoms (something I'dpreviously preached against). But, we are seeing improvements.

The most recent discovery was my low vitamin D. At my doctor'sinsistence, I took 12 tablets of 50,000IU prescription VitD over thecourse of 12 days. By the end of day 10, a window opened and mymental fog lifted for the first time in years. I felt capable again--

starting knocking off tasks. Then a few days after I finished it, thefog descended. I'm waiting to be retested to see if I can PLEASEtake some more (someone who'd sworn off "drugs" for life).

WHAT HAPPENED?So, what's happened? I'm not blaming all this entirely on our rawdiet and I don't want to discount the glowing testimonials of otherhealthy raw foodists. I'm still attached to raw food living as an ideal.Just one I'm necessarily not living right now, and one I probablywon't return to anytime soon.

I'm going to the trouble to write this because there areothers like us out there who desperately need someone tofigure this out--because I feel like my life is at risk right now.

I've managed to put our decline on hold, but it's a temporary fix

Page 36: INHS Hygienic Review 2008 Issue 1

supported artificially by getting our nutrients from a bottle and fromeating a very controlled, contrived diet to avoid anything thatcauses trouble. We need to get our digestive system working again, and we need other "raw experts" to let go of their pride andconsider that maybe for SOME people, a raw diet (or an incorrect

raw diet) makes them sick.

THEORIESNow, for my theories. Along with our mineral deficiencies, our hairtests gave an indication of our toxicities-- a moderate level ofaluminum & arsenic. Not really beyond the range of the toxicitiesmany people carry, but our total toxicity/deficiency profile indicatesthere MAY be some mercury toxicity as well (but there is noaccurate test of this). Mercury is known for interfering with mineraltransport. So, in other words, though we may technically have beengetting enough nutrients, mercury can prevent its uptake. It can

also make it very difficult to maintain a proper balance of intestinalflora so yeast can get out of control. Yeast overgrowth contributesto malabsorption and susceptibility to viruses and parasites. Yeastcan apparently mutate to feed off of fruits.

Aha, so maybe it was just the mercury! However, why did thingsget SO MUCH WORSE after our raw diet? There were no newamalgams or immunizations. In fact, my children had never hadamalgams and mine were removed many years previously. We'dnever had any real digestion problems and we were basically activeand healthy.

I'm my search for answers to Autism-Spectrum disorders, I cameacross the writings of Andrew Cutler, who wrote, "Amalgam Illness:Diagnosis & Treatment" and "Hair Test Interpretation: FindingHidden Toxicities". It's a very complicated topic, but as I read aboutthe symptoms associated with various toxicities and deficiencies Isaw how many of them fit the pattern of other vegans and rawfoodists I knew who were having trouble.

Turns out it is VERY difficult to remove mercury through naturalmeans and Dr. Cutler feels strongly that many people do greaterdamage by partly detoxing and stirring up mercury that waspreviously tucked away in a relatively safe place, bringing it back

into circulation. But because it can't effectively exit the body, itends up crossing the blood-brain barrier and is responsible for farworse symptoms. He (and others) has strong evidence that it is thistype of toxic picture that is the underlying cause for Autism-Spectrum disorders.

So, I have 2 main theories. One is that our raw diet partly detoxedus and redistributed pre-existing mercury which led to our digestivedecline. We are looking into this and once we bring our yeast undercontrol, we will consider chelation.

But we are clearly a unique case for our doctors. We are not

responding to the supplements and dietary improvements as well asmost people who following this approach. Our digestive system justdoesn't seem ready to respond.

This leads me to my second theory. That our raw diet, through a

Page 37: INHS Hygienic Review 2008 Issue 1

lack of adequate essential fatty acids from animal products (andyes, we did eat lots of coconuts), vitamins, and minerals createddeficiencies so low that our body's natural ability to synthesisnutrients, maintain proper blood chemistry and detox through thenormal route have become severely impaired. It's a bit of a chicken

and egg issue. These factors clearly are related, but it's still unclearas to what the most causative factors are.

As a mother with a challenging situation and very little computertime, I likely will not respond to questions or dialog. I present this"case study" only to help facilitate healthy dialog on diet as itrelates to health for ALL people. And as far as the advice I've heardthat we should have water fasted our toxins out, very few motherswould do this to their children (and some would be arrested fortrying).

Note: INHS has been warning about fruitarianism/veganism fromour start. Please speak out!We encourage everybody who has gotten into trouble fromfruitarianism and veganism to speak out! You can email us [email protected] statistics would be valuable - what percentage get in trouble,

in what time-frame, with what strictness (%vegan, % fruit, % raw, etc.)? Plus, the more who tell their got-in-trouble-story, the fasterwe can stop others from getting in trouble. Also - we encourageevery vegan and fruitarian to be as strict as possible -- follow thedirections (in whatever vegan/fruitarian book you use) exactly---because the stricter you are, the sooner you will see theproblems.

Those who are strict will discover deficiencies and toxicitiesquicker. One example is the Westbrook family, who were religiouslystrict vegans, and started breaking down in less than 6 years. Readabout it here: CRASHING ON THE HALLELUJAH DIET

Why are there such differences in breakdown time? Those who are vegans but cheat (=eat a little animal foods on

occasion) can go on for years or decades. Those who have large reserves when they start (e.g. are young

healthy men), & do heavy exercise (which burns away fruit sugars)- they will make it for a longer time.

Children are always being damaged much sooner than adults.

SEX & NATURAL HYGIENE

"Energy is the key to success, ineverything, even in meditation. The mind

is energetically related to diet, sex, everything. The average person just needs

to learn one thing, not to waste hisenergy."

WHY HAVE SO MANY NATURAL HYGIENE DOCTORSRECOMMENDED KAREZZA?

INTERVIEW WITH DR. STANLEY S. BASS

You recently wrote the book "Energy-Karezza - How to Make Every WifeSexually Wild About Her Husband". Why do you recommend Karezza?

To be happy. To have a better life, that's all. To increase the happiness whileyou are alive. The reason I decided to write this book, is because Karezza was one of thegreatest experiences of my life.If you practise Karezza, you are practising ecstasy. Not many people knowwhat ecstasy is. People are looking for inspiration and bliss and enjoyment, and they find it the wrong way. They try to find it in social behavior, in food, eating in restaurants, special menus. They live in fancy houses, have fancyautomobiles, perhaps even use drugs. Most of their thrills are tied in with foodand sex. These are the strongest drives in the human nature. But standard sex leaves a lot to be desired. There are many problemsassociated with conventional sex. Karezza corrects all that. If you practiseKarezza you don't need a lot of fancy things, or drugs. That cannot becompared to what is experienced with Karezza.

recommended Karezza?

In Natural Hygiene, doctors (many of them MDs) advocated Karezza already inthe 1800's. They said, it is better for a man not to lose his fluids, or as theBible says: "Don't Waste Your Seed". If a man saves his fluids, he will therebysave energy, which improves both his health and longevity. And when a manhas more (vital) energy, he can prolong the sex, which then leads toexponentially increased pleasure & ecstatic bliss for both men and women.Robert Walter, who formulated Life's Great Law, advocated Karezza andpracticed it. James C. Jackson, who was revered by Dr. Cursio, advocated it.Dr. Trall and others used it. Drs. Jackson, Cursio and Trall all wrote about it.Dr. Cursio lectured about it.Sylvester Graham, the minister in the mid-1800's, was one of the earlypromoters and one of the greatest on the subject. He must have learnt it fromhis research, from historical literature, because he was into religion. Andreligion, the yogis in India, invented Karezza and Tantra. Dr. Alice Stockham,Quaker & MD, who wrote "Karezza: Ethics of Marriage" in 1901, went to Indiato learn about it.

What about Dr. Herbert Shelton? He wrote many books on NaturalHygiene, but did he practice Karezza?

This part of the interview is only accessible as audio (24 min.).It covers Drs. Shelton, Cursio, Tilden & related subjects, raw diets, thebenefits of laughter, & more.

You say that drug-experiences cannot be compared toKarezza?

The ecstasy of drugs is far below the ecstasy of Karezza. Any person whopractices Karezza will look down on drugs as being a false thrill. A harmfulthrill. A toxic thrill.I think if a man is using drugs and you turn him on to Karezza, that is thequickest way to get him off drugs. If I were taking care of drug addicts, all Iwould do is teach the men Karezza, and I think I could get them off drugs in afew weeks. What if they wanted to do both at the same time? It would be impossible, because drugs are demeaning and devitalizing, and you wouldn't have enoughenergy for sex, after the drug. While in Karezza you go higher, higher ineverything. Why would a man exchange a thimble full of joy, followed by suffering, for anocean of endless bliss. How can you compare these two things?Karezza could revolutionize psychiatry. If you are dealing with drug addicts -instead of using methadone, or other drugs to get them out of it - just bringthem into Karezza, and the concept of drugs will soon seem stupid to them incomparison. And that's how they might succeed in weeks. Who would wantdrugs, if they do Karezza? They wouldn't need drugs. That's the lowest form ofgetting a high.If you have a sexual partner, why would you need drugs? Drugs are a downer.Karezza is an upper. It is like a miracle cure mentally. All they need is oneexperience, and after that, no need to fool around with drugs for years tobreak the habit. And think about it, if the drug consumers and drug buyers would disappear,

Page 42: INHS Hygienic Review 2008 Issue 1

Dr. Jackson

Dr. Cursio

wouldn't that mean the end of the drug trade, with all its connected criminality?

You were in your 30's when you learned aboutKarezza?

Dr. Cursio whom I learned it from, had learnt about it fromthe old masters. I went to one of his meetings with clientsand that's how I met him. I was on my way to become acelibate yogi for spiritual reasons, but had recently heardthat Karezza would also enable my spiritual goals. I askedDr. Cursio about Karezza and wanted to get his opinion. He invited me to cometo his Health Castle, his health retreat in upstate New York, so we could talkfor hours without interruption. This was the trigger that brought me intoKarezza, and into Natural Hygiene too.

Natural Hygiene & Karezza is more or less the same thing when it comesto energy?

The highest aspect of Natural Hygiene is energy conservation, leading toecstatic living. The highest aspect of Karezza is energy conservation, leading toecstatic sex. The energy conservation is why the old hygienic mastersrecommended Karezza.Success is measured in terms of energy. The one who has the most energywill be the most successful. Energy is the key to success, in everything, even inmeditationThat is why Energy-Karezza is the ultimate of ordinary Karezza. And Karezza isthe ultimate of ordinary sex. Energy is everything. Energy is mind, ego, sex.In nutrition and sex there is the same idea: energy is energy, and you caneither enlarge it, or you can decrease it by dividing it. You don't want to divideenergy, by doing two things at once. The Energy-Karezza book is a treatise of energy, high psychology and sex. Itis a treatise of many subjects. Most psychologists don't know these things. Dothey know of the relationship of energy to thought, to the mind, to Karezza, etc.?The mind is not isolated. The mind is energetically related to diet, sex, everything. The average person just needs to learn one thing, not to waste hisenergy. Once he learns that, then he can become a master of himself.

If a man and a woman are on the verge of divorce, would yourecommend Karezza?

If a couple starts Karezza, then their whole relationship willchange. I have seen this happen over and over.E.g. a Hasidic man, a patient of mine, told me: "I have awoman I love, I want to marry her, but she doesn't want tomarry me, in fact she doesn't treat me well, at all." He wasa premature ejaculator. I offered to teach him Karezza, which would solve his problem. He said, "teach me, teachme", sounding desperate. I said, "I will give you one hour, ifyou put down a hundred dollars. You will learn what to do, and if you have anyquestions, you can call me."He rushed a wallet out of his pocket, and picked out the money so fast, it waslike I was asking for a one-dollar-bill. I then described Karezza, how he shouldact, what to do before sex, etc. After about 10 days he calls me, and he ishappy, laughing and giggling. I asked, what's happening? He said, I practisedKarezza, and I don't have premature ejaculations anymore. She fell in love withme, and she proposed to me.

Page 43: INHS Hygienic Review 2008 Issue 1

Dr. Walter

Another recent case was exactly like that. This man loved a woman, and shetold him she was going to leave him. His whole world was crashing. He wasalso a premature ejaculator. I told him about Karezza, energy and diet, and thesame thing happened, the woman fell in love with him. These men becamegood friends of mine. They loved me, and respected me, because I changedtheir life. They would have sent me a lot of patients, if they could have done sowithout being embarrassed by disclosing their private life. When men get together, they talk about sex, they all start bragging to eachother, about what wonderful women they have, and what great sex they have.None of them will confess that they have premature ejaculation, or that the sexis bad, because a man equates himself with the sex. If he is a great lover, hisego is high. If he is a poor lover, he feels insecure. And then he doesn't likehimself, he hates himself, because he feels nobody loves him, and that hiswoman is disappointed in him.

I also remember a priest who had a problem with his sweetheart. He washaving sexual problems, related to premature ejaculation, or sex that was tooshort. After learning Karezza he became a skilled lover, and his woman stayedwith him.

Another interesting case was a rabbi, who had been fasting 40 days under mysupervision. He had a girlfriend he loved, but she was Christian. He wouldnever have married anybody but a Jewish girl. Rabbis live in religion, they thinkof God all day long. Since marriage was not possible, she told him she wasgoing to find somebody else. He asked me, his doctor: "what do you think?"I said, well, when it comes to marriage, she could convert to Judaism, that isone possibility. But another way is, that if he had really great sex with her, shewouldn't leave him, even if he didn't marry her; at least until she got somebodyelse with the same skills. That would mean she would be with him for a longtime. He started practicing Karezza, and as I predicted she soon fell in lovewith him, and decided to stay with him, even without marriage.

Percentage-wise, in your experience, how manymarital problems are connected to "too short sex"?

I would say all. I am quite certain that all marital problemsare due to "too short sex". The average man, how long ishis sex? If he can last 20 minutes he is doing fine. Hewants sex, because he's got the drive, and he thinks havingan orgasm is the way to end it. He doesn't know that there is another kind ofsex. So consequently he doesn't try to control himself. Then if he is excited, heis going to move according to the excitement. And the faster he moves, thequicker he will come, and the woman ends up unhappy and frustrated.Because she needs much longer time for satisfaction, and by the time she isbeginning to warm up, he is finished.

I am a doctor, and when a woman is consulting me, she may tell me that she isnot happy with her husband. I ask her why, and we talk. Finally I find out thatshe doesn't know what is wrong. But if you probe enough, you always find thatthe sex is lousy, but she doesn't know that anything is wrong. Why? Becauseeverybody has the same problem. I would say a majority of women, if you askif they are happy in sex, they think they are. Even if the sex is bad, they thinkthey are happy. It is weird. The sex is the problem, but nobody knows it is theproblem. Since everybody has the same experience, quick sex, they think thisis normal. Instead they intellectualize what the cause of the problem is, blamingthe money, nagging, sarcasm, his/her ego, etc.

In an unhappy marriage when the wife looks at her husband, she looks at him

Page 44: INHS Hygienic Review 2008 Issue 1

Dr. Bass

critically, analyzing him negatively. She will be judging him all the time, becauseshe is not happy, she is frustrated. And he will criticize her if he is unhappy. Ofcourse, he will be tolerantly happy if he has sex every 2 weeks, but he is notgoing to be wildly happy.I have known a lot of men who had bad relationships with women. If I tell themabout Karezza, and they are interested enough to try it, the whole relationshipchanges. Now it is like she is meeting him for the first time. It is like they aregoing out on a first date.Let's say they have known each other for a year, and the sex is just blaah. When he starts with Karezza and starts controlling himself, then she startsenjoying the sex more. All of a sudden she sees him in a different light. All theearlier memories and experiences she had with him begin to disappear, because the new experience is different.Visualize a miserable relationship, that has been miserable for 10, 20 years. Then they start Karezza. All of a sudden it becomes like she picked up a newguy.

Most men and women have a semi-secure but boringrelationship. Couples may not know they are unhappy. Ifyou have not experienced Karezza, how can you factor thatinto the equation? You just factor in the average life, whichis incomplete. Karezza takes all the boredom out of sex. When they start Karezza everything changes. Now sheloves him and can't do enough for him, and he is very happywith her, always buying her presents. He is talking nice to her, being verypolite, because he is so happy. He feels very good, he has energy, sex is always available and he never getstired of sex, and the woman becomes an integral part of his life. He dependson her, because he needs her. There is no depletion, so he can have sex as often as he wants. And thewoman always feels complete: oh my man, he loves me, he never leaves mealone, he is always touching me and kissing me, caressing me. And their egoszoom, they love themselves, they respect themselves. If a man loves a woman, she feels complete. She feels secure. But if a man doesn't love a woman or isarguing with her, then she feels insecure. So with Karezza, the wholepsychology changes completely. The psychology gets unbelievable, it gets sogreat that if you talk about it, people don't believe it. They think you areexaggerating. Why do people overeat? Because they are bored. If people have good sexwith Karezza, they won't overeat so much. They will spend more time with sex, more time exercising, and less time eating. Karezza is excellent exercise, better than jogging. This will prolong their life. They will look better, becomeslim and trim, have more energy and become healthier.

If Karezza is so exceptional, why isn't it common already now?

Well, you have to know about it. We are not at the highest point of civilization,so people don't know about it. When we reach the highest point, everybody willbe doing Karezza. Also, people may only know what they read in the newspapers, or hear about.Existing books about Karezza are few and far between. Older Karezza booksare very enthusiastic, but more descriptive than instructive. They may beflowery, bubbling over with happiness. The authors talk about how wonderful

Page 45: INHS Hygienic Review 2008 Issue 1

Alice Stockham, MD

they feel.J. William Lloyd, in "The Karezza Method" from 1931, uses a lot of fancywords and talks about it in a lofty way. He is not very instructive, trying tobecome ecstatic in the description. He is trying to mentally give you some kindof sensation about it. At the time people were puritanical, and his style ofwriting may have been exciting for them. Then there is Alice Stockham's "Karezza: Ethics of Marriage" (1901) (read ithere), John Noyes "Male Continence" (1872) (included in Energy-Karezza's appendix 1),and George Noyes Miller's "The Strike of A Sex" (1891), which don't go intomuch practical detail either. If you wanted to learn Karezza from these books, then you had to do what I did, test it out on your own.And if you don't know enough about the topic, you may not always succeed.Prolonged sex requires knowledge. The average man would probably take awoman out, have a big meal at a restaurant, which then interferes withKarezza. And then he will say: it is phony, it doesn't work. Because he doesn'tknow about the connection between nutrition and sex. That is why energy-understanding is so valuable.

"I wanted to write about Karezza already25 years ago, but felt that in those days

people were a little too puritanical."

Energy-Karezza is a practical book?

Absolutely, practical for every man on earth withoutexception. I have been teaching Karezza for over 50years, and have seen every student succeed, most ofthem within a few weeks. I wanted to write aboutKarezza already 25 years ago, but felt that in thosedays people were a little too puritanical. I knew itwould make a great book, but I kept thinking: peopleare not ready for all the details. But as the years went by, I noticed they werewriting about sex everywhere. Sex was in fashion. So I finally decided to writeabout my experience. It is a fascinating subject.(Read the first 10 pages of Energy-Karezza here.)

What have you added, compared to older books?

As I mentioned, earlier books were more puritanical. My book is instructive, aswell as descriptive. Plus from my experience as a hygienic doctor, I addedenergy-enhancement. Without energy-understanding it is not easy to overcomethe obstacles to prolongation for hours. Since my goal was spirituality, I tried toavoid all orgasms for 50 years, while prolonging sex for hours, several times aweek. I wonder if earlier authors got as much experience as I did, or knewabout yoga, energy and psychology in connection with sex? People are limitedby their education. If a man has no education, and writes a book on Karezza,he can only talk about his feelings. He cannot talk about psychology, becausehe doesn't know how the mind works. He may not know anything aboutnutrition, energy and spirituality, so he will never realize there is a connection.Does any other book cover all the things that are in Energy-Karezza?In this book I have been looking at sex from all angles, mental, emotional, spiritual, psychological. The average man doesn't analyze his mind during sex.He is just having a ball, and doesn't analyze it. But since I knew why, I checkedeverything, and tried to perfect it.

Page 46: INHS Hygienic Review 2008 Issue 1

How would you compare Karezza to standard sex?

What is standard sex? It is short sex. It lasts 15 minutes perhaps. It is evenshorter than the ecstasy of a meal. And since the average woman needs moretime just to get warmed up, standard sex is seldom satisfying for women. And it is also a kind of punishment for a man, because when a man has anorgasm, he loses his sexual drive and physical power, and has to wait forweeks to recuperate.Karezza is completely different. First of all it is deeply satisfying for women, allowing multiple female orgasms, and increased excitement for men.Comparing Karezza to standard sex is like comparing the finest food in theworld to garbage. Peak orgasm is the highest bliss you reach during standardsex. But it lasts just a few seconds and is finished. Karezza allows both hoursof prolonged valley orgasms and occasional standard peak orgasms.

So with Karezza you can have sex for longer than 15 minutes?

Yes, you can go for 15 hours. I wrote a story in the book about that in Energy-Karezza, how one person I know went for 12 hours, in order to test theconcept. I used to average 4 hours per session, three times a week. But forothers, one hour may be enough. A typical comment when people hear this is:isn't it very sore to have sex for hours? The answer is no, there is no sorenessduring Karezza sex, because of the natural lubrication. If a healthy woman isdry during standard sex, it is because she doesn't find it very exciting. ButKarezza is very good sex for women, so their secretions automaticallyincrease. Not only that, but when a woman feels loved and is happier all thetime, her body works better and is healthier, which also increases secretions. And since the sex goes on for such a long time, there is a lot of caressing andkissing during the slower cycles, something women also benefit from. In myexperience, women love Karezza, and cannot get enough. There are no frigidwomen, in my mind. The main problem so-called frigid women have is that theirmen do not last long enough.

"Who would want drugs, if they doKarezza? They wouldn't need drugs. That's

the lowest form of getting a high."

What is the difference between Karezza & Tantra?

Karezza is an introduction. It is like baby-Tantra. Sex is the highest you can goon the physical plane. When you are doing Karezza, it leads you right into thehighest above the physical plane, which is the spiritual. Karezza is theprolongation of sex, with or without (peak) orgasms. Tantra is the prolongationof sex, without any (peak) orgasms at all, for hours.Tantra starts as Karezza. When you prolong Karezza, while also minimizing theenergy-loss, it becomes Tantra. The energy-level and the meditation of Tantraawakens the psychic centers of the body, and raises the energy to the chakrasand to the brain. And that's where the meditation transforms into spiritual

Page 47: INHS Hygienic Review 2008 Issue 1

MAD magazine:"In order to sellproducts thesedays - MadisonAvenue, Hollywood, television, otherpublishers ..... everybodyexploits SEX- but we'd never

experience. With Karezza you will get into physical emotional ecstasy, with Tantra you getinto spiritual ecstasy, awakening the spiritualized aspect of the person. Seehow sex leads to the highest? But note, for most people it is necessary to firstreach the physical bliss of Karezza, before being able to reach the spiritualecstasy of Tantra. People start by looking for the highest physical pleasures, and they wind up being a spiritual being, on a spiritual path, and experienceself-realization, naturally. It is like a mysterious practice almost, it leads to thehighest.

You say that Karezza is a solution for the overpopulation problem?

Absolutely. It may be the only way to master it, because of the higher ecstasywith Karezza, compared to standard sex. The average man, using ordinarysex, may wind up with a lot of children. Very poor people often have morechildren than they want, have large families, and cannot afford them. But theycan't help themselves, because sex may be their only real pleasure. If these people learn Karezza, with postponed (or no) ejaculations, then theycan get even higher pleasure. Increased pleasure without the severe penalty oflarge families, which they can't afford, and which lead eventually tooverpopulation and the destruction of the world.

Karezza could have an impact on prostitution and sex-slavery?

Prostitutes make a lot of money from people who are frustrated in sex. If ahusband doesn't satisfy a wife, she may always be "too tired" when he wantssex. So he doesn't get much sex, and is always frustrated. His wife doesn'twant sex, because she doesn't get any pleasure with it. Their sex-life is boring, and nobody gets anything out of it. Their marriage becomes like aknocked-down and dragged-out affair, because they don't know anythingbetter.Prostitution is the lowest way to experience sex. Historically prostitution wasflourishing, because men were frustrated in sex. But with Karezza this changes.Karezza removes marital frustration. Because Karezza is more exciting thaneating, more exciting than power, more exciting than making money.Hundredfold more exciting than standard sex. Once a man knows Karezza, hedoesn't want a prostitute, he wants a real woman.I think if Karezza became standard practice, it would mean the end ofprostitution, sex trade and sex slavery.

"If you are living a life of bliss, throughKarezza and Tantra, you love everybody -

there is no competition - andyou are eliminating the psychological

principles of war."

You think our world would change?

If all the big oil menwere having goodKarezza, they wouldnot be indifferent tothe public, and pushoil just to makemoney. They would

Page 48: INHS Hygienic Review 2008 Issue 1

become morally transformed in the process. Didn't they say in the sixties, make love, not war? They said it unconsciously, but actually it was true. When people are full of love, they want to help others, they want to sharebeautiful things, they don't want to damage other people, they don't want todestroy nature in a greedy way.Why are people greedy? Because they are not fulfilled. Right? What causesgreed? Lack of fulfillment. If they are fulfilled completely there is no greed. There is a sharing automatically. That's the "kingdom of heaven".

So Karezza promotes love, not war?

If you are living a life of bliss, through Karezza and Tantra, you love everybody. There is no competition if you love everybody. If you love somebody you don'twant to compete with them. You enjoy them. And if you eliminate competition, you are eliminating the psychologicalprinciples of war. You see, competition means war. You grab this way, thatway, at somebody else's expense, because things are limited. Money islimited. But there is no limitation in Karezza. You can get all you want. Nobody cantake away your bliss. Can I steal you bliss? That could be the end of all wars. Why would people want to fight with eachother, because we know from experience that people who learn Karezza arevery loving. All the time. They love everybody. And when you are loving, youare not going to get into wars. Even competition becomes kind of a downer. Why do we have wars? We have insecurity, lack of love, competition; it is likea psychological war in the field of business and social life. If you eliminatecompetition in society, aren't you eliminating wars? War is like trying to stealsomebody else's things, it is competition for land etc. So if you eliminate that -won't the whole world change?

How would you want to summarize your life with Karezza?

In my life I first practised standard sex for 20 years, and after that, Karezzaand energy-enhanced Karezza and Tantra, for 50 years. To me, a life with Karezza and Tantra, it is like living a God-like, beautiful, ecstatic, blissful existence, beyond imagination. And practicing ordinary sex islike living in a sewer, in comparison. In the future I think Karezza will become very common, probably a lifelongpractice for most.

BIOCHEMICAL INDIVIDUALITY

"Each of us has unique needs, and theprogram must meet those needs, not those

INFINITE VARIETYby Dr. Paul A. Goldberg

Each of us is Unique

We all differ in countless ways asacknowledged by Hippocrates whosaid, “Different sorts of people havedifferent types of maladies.”Conventional medicine and most“alternative practices” base theircare on the name given to a person'ssymptoms rather than to the personhaving those symptoms. By focusingon symptoms rather than employingcare based on causal factorschronically ill people are doomed tolifetimes of suffering.

Primary Causes of ChronicDisease

At conception we receive a geneticheritage from our parents known asour genome. How we express thisoutwardly is our phenotype, which is modified through environmental factorsand our behaviors.

Our genome is found in the chromosomes of each of our trillions of cells. It isestimated that there are 100,000 genes on our 23 pairs of chromosomesmaking each of us highly unique. As the science of genetics developed itbrought about a revolution in understanding as new genes and how theyexpress themselves were discovered. Little practical application of thisunderstanding, however, has filtered into conventional or alternative medicine.

Our genetic variability is astounding. One egg cell has eight million possibilitiesin terms of its genetic potential, as does each sperm cell, therefore, any twoparents produce a combined zygote with any of 64 trillion (eight million timeseight million) diploid combinations. It is no wonder that even brothers andsisters can be so different. Looking beyond a single family, each different setof parents generates another 64 trillion possibilities. Each one of us isextraordinarily unique.

In order therefore to help patients reverse a chronic disease it is criticalto understand their own makeup. The “disease name” is a title for amanifestation of symptoms and does not represent the complex factorsinvolved in the patient having those symptoms.

Our appearances differ greatly… some are small, some tall, some fat, somethin. There are color variations of black, brown, white, red, and yellow, different facial features, etc. The outward appearances, however, are but aglimpse of the internal variations. Likewise, the differences between

chronically ill patients even those with the same medical” diagnosis” areenormous.

In the 1960's, Dr. Roger J. Williams, professor of nutritional biochemistry at theUniversity of Texas described “biochemical individuality”:

“From a practical standpoint we cannot neglect the facts of biochemicalindividuality. Of necessity, for reasons involving inheritance, every individual

has nutritional needs, which differ quantitatively, with respect to eachseparate nutrient, from his neighbors. The list of nutrients in the nutritional

chain of life is presumably the same for every individual. If we were toindicate the quantities of each nutrient needed daily, however, these amountswould be distinctively different for each of us. Some individuals, in the case

of specific nutrients, may need from two to ten times as much as others. Eachindividual has a pattern of needs all his own.”

Biochemical Individuality - Nutritional/Metabolic Needs

One major area of variance between individuals is seen in our nutrientrequirements and our ability to excrete waste products i.e. our detoxificationpotential. Dr. Williams observed significant differences among supposedlyuniform animals in their nutrient requirements and their abilities to excretewastes. Some inbred rats on identical diets excreted eleven times as muchurinary phosphate as others Some inbred baby chicks required seven times asmuch alcohol to bring about intoxication as others;) Research into mercurytoxicity has revealed sensitivities that vary as much as a million fold from oneindividual to another.

Nutrient requirements also vary widely. Even among healthy human subjects a200-fold difference has been observed in relation just to calcium requirementsalone.

We have vastly different nutrient requirements, different digestive andabsorptive capacities, different hormonal outputs, different immune systems, different abilities to detoxify toxic materials, etc.

Consider your circumstances. Has your doctor simply named your symptomsand given you treatments or has he/she uncovered the foundational reasonsfor your illness? Is your doctor addressing the causes of your problems soyour health might be restored or are you simply in a lockdown situation where

Page 52: INHS Hygienic Review 2008 Issue 1

new drugs and treatments are applied for each new symptom as it arises? Canyour doctor tell you what makes you different from other cases with similarsymptoms?

Even among twins, triplets, and quadruplets at birth, vast biological differencesare noted. The adrenaline content of the adrenal glands varied within one set ofquadruplet mammals by thirty-two fold. The repercussions of these manydifferences between patients in practice are enormous yet these differencesare rarely considered let alone addressed.

For a physician to determine your care based on a “diagnosis” and notthoroughly investigate you as an individual puts the chances of recovering yourhealth at great peril.

True for the Goose Notalways True for the Gander

Many patients come to our clinicbecause of someone they knew withthe same medical diagnosis whorecovered their health under our careand they want us to do the same forthem. They are often surprised afterour investigation that the program laidout for them is very different than that given to the person they knew with thesame diagnosis. Each of us has unique needs and the program must meetthose needs, not those of someone else, simply because they received thesame superficial diagnosis.

Genetics Does Not Doom Us

Our genetics sets the stage for our health potential but does not doom us toillness. Genes involved in chronic diseases generally have to be triggered.Likewise there are steps that can be taken to positively alter a patient'sgenetic expression so as to return that person to health. This is a challengewe meet head on in daily practice.

Diet is one factor in the expression of our genetics. What we eat in a singlemeal has minimal impact but long-term dietary choices and the efficiency of ourdigestive capacity significantly impacts genetic expression. Nutrition does notalter genes but can alter the way genes are expressed.

What is My Preferred Approach?

I am commonly asked by patients or students; “Dr. Goldberg, what would youdo for a patient with Rheumatoid Arthritis or Multiple Sclerosis or Crohn'sdisease or chronic fatigue or diabetes” or (you name the disease). My response is simple:

I would perform:

A comprehensive case history1.A thorough physical examination2.

Page 53: INHS Hygienic Review 2008 Issue 1

Appropriate laboratory studies based on the case history and physicalexamination.

7.

Each done with the purpose of uncovering underlying causes.8.

What if it was heart disease, they ask. Again I respond,

A comprehensive case history1.A thorough physical examination2.Appropriate laboratory studies based on the case history and physicalexamination.

3.

Each done with the purpose of uncovering underlying causes4.

But Dr. Goldberg they ask a bit frustrated, what if it was cancer? Again Ireply:

A comprehensive case history1.A thorough physical examination2.Appropriate laboratory based on the case history and physicalexamination.

3.

Each done with the purpose of uncovering underlying causes4.

We simply cannot ascertain what to do for the patient by the name of theirsymptoms alone! How foolish to write books claiming that one has theultimate answer for any one specific medical diagnostic category wheneach of us is so different from the next!

The medical diagnostic model has limited utility. When we read about a medicaldisease and what its outcome is, we are informed what the natural history ofthe syndrome is under medical care, with the average patient. This is basedon the observations of patients who have presented over the years with similarsigns and symptoms and received similar treatments and reflects how patientswith these signs and symptoms generally respond to medical care.

Reason warrants that we not accept these often-dismal natural histories asbeing the only possible outcome, but rather the outcomes under medical careand conventional living habits. The many medical disease diagnoses withdismal prognoses are evidence of modern medicine's failures. This need not bethe case when the causes of ill health are identified and addressed.

Drawbacks of Diagnostic CategorizationsRevealed ThroughCase Studies

The following case studies using patients diagnosed with rheumatoid diseases, exemplify the limitations of medical diagnosis.

Two Cases of Psoriatic Arthritis: Pat and Dianne

Pat

Page 54: INHS Hygienic Review 2008 Issue 1

Pat, a twenty five year old male with psoriatic arthritis was referred to ouroffice. Pat had undergone extensive medical drug therapy withoutimprovement. A thorough case history was taken, a physical examinationperformed and functional laboratory tests ordered. He was covered withpsoriatic scales over 75% of his body including the scalp, face, arms, legs, andtrunk. Radiographs of his neck showed significant degenerative changes. Mostdistressing to Pat were his severe arthritic pains. The history and interviewrevealed that Pat used alcohol to excess, kept late hours, and had a diet thatincluded many foods lab testing would reveal he was sensitive to. There wasno family history of autoimmune disease.

After reviewing the results with Pat, it was determined he should undergo asupervised fast which lasted seven days. The patient rested, slept long hours, and took sunbaths. Initially the skin lesions increased but by the sixth day hadbegun to fade. At the end of seven days the fast was broken. The psoriaticlesions were more than 70% gone. This was followed by an appropriate dietplan along with extensive guidance regarding hygienic aspects of living specificfor his circumstances.

The joint pains subsided over the next several weeks and the patient returnedhome largely cleared of psoriatic lesions and with vastly improved joint comfort. He was given a program based on his individual traits to allow him to continueto progress without ongoing reliance on physicians. Causes identified, causesaddressed, health restored.

Dianne

Two months after seeing Pat we received a call from Dianne, a lady who hadalso been diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis. She knew Pat through an arthritissupport group they both attended. Dianne related that she was impressed withPat's vast improvements with a condition deemed “incurable” from which shehad suffered with herself for many years.

She had questioned Pat as to what he did under my care. What foods he wastold to eat, which to avoid, what supplements had been given, how long hefasted, etc. Dianne then followed the same plan with disappointing results. The unsupervised fast she took was disastrous leaving her weak anddebilitated. The foods she ate gave her indigestion, and she found her jointpains, skin and general health worse off than before she had started.

I explained to Dianne that she was a different person and what had worked forPat was based on his makeup, his history, his biochemistry, not hers. Sheemphatically replied that her case was the same since they both had beendiagnosed with “psoriatic arthritis.”

Many doctors and patients believe if two people have the same medicaldiagnosis that they have the same problem and therefore what will benefit onewill benefit another. This is a perilous error. I explained to Dianne that aprogram of care for her would need to be based on her specific traits, not on amedical title she had been tagged with.

Soon after Dianne traveled to our clinic for care. I found her debilitated by herattempts at fasting, which were inappropriate in her case. She suffered fromexhaustion, very weak digestion and low body temperature. She had followeda raw food diet along with drinkingfruit juices because she had read in a bookon psoriasis that raw foods were “good for psoriasis” and that juices would“cleanse” the tissues. Dianne erroneously based her care on the name of herdisease rather than understanding her own constitution.

Page 55: INHS Hygienic Review 2008 Issue 1

We helped Dianne recover by developing a program based on her biochemicalindividuality, which turned out to be very different than Pat's. The roots of herproblems leading to her psoriatic arthritis symptoms revolved around poor fatdigestion which had been the case with her Mother, low thyroid and adrenalfunction, a troubled marriage, and a protozoa infestation that she had likelypicked up traveling in Central America. Despite the same medical diagnosis theroots of her health problems were different from Pat's.

Patients with the same medical diagnosis have different reasons why theybecome ill. I am not indifferent to serious diagnoses e.g. lupus, psoriaticarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, ulcerative colitis, etc., but since such titlesrepresent only superficial information they do not cause me to panic either.

Three Cases of Rheumatoid Arthritis

Each of the following cases of medically diagnosed Rheumatoid Arthritisreceived similar medical treatments based upon the diagnosis and each wascontinuing to worsen when we first saw them. The causal factors behind theirconditions differed and therefore the protocols we employed in helping eachrecover had distinct differences as well.

Mary

Mary, a 55-year-old female had been diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis threeyears previously after a stressful period in her life when she had lived mostlyon pasta, pizza, bread and potatoes. Her hands were painful and she had poorgrip strength. Multiple joints were inflamed and her sedimentation rate wasover 100 (normal = 0 to 20). She was dismayed by the failure of the drugsprescribed to her (steroids followed by Embrel and later Remicaide) andequally discouraged by the failures of the many bottles of “natural remedies”she had tried that were supposedly “good for arthritis”. The drugs initiallysuppressed some of her symptoms but later she developed a serious lunginfection due to the suppression of her immunity. Mary was also taking anassortment of herbs, homeopathic agents and “Flower Remedies” given to herby a Naturopath.

Mary's rheumatoid disease emanated from her gastrointestinal tract asrevealed by the history, exam and functional laboratory testing. I required herto eliminate starches as (in her case) they were promoting specific bacterialgrowth contributing to her inflammation. The cause was straightforward.

Mary was cooperative. In four months improvements in both her bloodchemistries and a reduction in the patient's pain and swelling were obvious.Today she is fully mobile, off all medications and enjoys good health. Thecauses were identified and addressed and led to a restoration of health.

Joan

Joan, a 42-year-old female from the mid-west arrived at our clinic withmedically diagnosed rheumatoid arthritis. She could walk only slowly withconsiderable pain. The hands, knees, wrists, hands, and feet were markedlyinflamed. She was receiving methotrexate and humera, all immune suppressantdrugs. Her Aunt and a first cousin also had autoimmune disorders.

Joan had taken good general care of herself. She had, however, recentlyundergone an unexpected divorce from her husband of over twenty yearswhom she had put through school working long hours to do so. Putting salt onthe wound the divorce was followed within three weeks by her husband

Page 56: INHS Hygienic Review 2008 Issue 1

marrying his young secretary.

Her blood work showed her to be anemic, have low serum protein levels andan elevated sedimentation rate and high C-reactive protein level. She had beena hard worker and had significantly shorted herself on sleep over the years. She had elevated levels of mercury in her tissues due to dental amalgams, anelevated indican level (a toxin resulting from bacterial breakdown of protein) inher gut, yeast overgrowth and imbalances in her trace mineral levels. Anindividual program of care was developed based on these factors.

Initially she made rapid progress. The sedimentation rate dropped rapidlywithin a few weeks and the patient felt much improved. She was required toobtain long hours of sleep, stay on a liquid diet for intervals ranging from threedays to a week, take oral chelating agents and specific trace elements, undergo trigger point therapy in our office and take steps to address both theovergrowth of yeast and the high level of indican in her intestines. She returnedhome for several weeks to take care of business matters prior to returning toour office for further care. When she returned I found she had lost ground onthe progress we had made and the inflammatory markers had risen again.

A lengthy discussion with Joan revealed that while home she had seen herformer husband and his new wife in a convertible purchased shortly before thedivorce. She experienced a surge of anger that was continuing to rage. Irecommended counseling which she obtained, to address this issue. Within thenext several months with counseling and continued attention to the areaspreviously mentioned, the patient improved again as her emotions settled. Herinflammatory index dropped and she returned home without carrying theemotional burden and with her biochemical issues addressed.

Mark

Mark, a twenty seven year old male, presented at our clinic with medicallydiagnosed rheumatoid arthritis. He had been seeing a rheumatologist for sixmonths and was continuing to worsen. There was no significant family history. He had formerly been active with weight lifting, running, and motorcycling butnow was stiff and weak with swollen joints. His rheumatologist told him that“rheumatoid arthritis” was “incurable” and that he would have to adapt to thereality that he would become crippled with time. Drugs including methotrexateand steroids had left him weak and nauseated. Switching to Enbrel had broughtonly partial relief of symptoms and left him frightened regarding the seriousside effects he knew could occur including lymphoma and tuberculosis. An“alternative” medical physician had placed Mark on a number of glandularsubstances and advised him to take colonics, which he had reluctantly done.

Following a lengthy interview, lifestyle analysis and functional laboratory testingMark was given a report of findings. A significant finding was his impairedglucose tolerance, which we traced to his heavy use of soft drinks. This hadweakened his glucose regulating ability contributing to a pro-inflammatorystate, further compounded by a significant imbalance in his fatty acids.

After restoring his glucose balance through dietary and improving his fatty acidprofile both primarily through dietary intervention the patient recovered from his“rheumatoid arthritis” discomforts in less than eight weeks. Years later thepatient continues to be well and engages in heavy physical activities withoutdifficulty. All signs of the “rheumatoid arthritis” disappeared when specificfactors addressing his biochemical traits were addressed.

All three of these patients, Mary, Joan and Mark, presented with an identicalmedical diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis. Their symptoms were similar yet thecausal factors behind their illnesses were vastly different. Different

Page 57: INHS Hygienic Review 2008 Issue 1

biochemical factors and emotional backgrounds were at play. The timesrequired for recovery and the strategies used in effecting a reversal of theircondition also differed. The reasons behind their illness had been ignored bythe Medical Rheumatologists each of whom simply applied toxic, symptomsuppressive drugs and by “alternative practitioners” who had applied safer, yetineffective measures that likewise ignored causal factors.

A Look At Mans Best Friend

A convincing way to appreciate our individualityis to consider different breeds of dogs, fromthe Chihuahua to the Great Dane.

All domestic dogs belong to a single species,Canis familiaris. The many breeds aredescended from a small subspecies of wolf,Canis lupus pallipes.1 Selective breeding hasproduced a wide variation of different canineappearances, strengths, weaknesses andpersonalities. It is difficult to imagine, whenone looks at different breeds that all share acommon ancestry. All the breeds are dogs yet their health problems differwidely based on unique traits related to their breed and as an individual withinthat breed.

The dachshund is subject to inter-vertebral disc disease and diabetes, theRhodesian Ridgeback to dermoid sinuses (cysts), the Scottish Deerhound togastric torsion, the Chihuahua to incomplete closure of its skull, the Toy Poodleto early tooth loss, the Bulldog to heat stroke, the German Shepherd to hipdysplasia, etc. Life spans differ also. The Schipperke from Belgium commonlylives to 20 years of age, while the Irish Wolfhound averages only about five tosix years. As with humans, environmental factors e.g. diet, exercise, etc.,greatly affect the propensity of each breed to develop the genetic weaknessesit is subject to as well as determining how long the lifespan will be, within theboundaries of its genetic heritage.

Working With The Hand of Cards We Were Dealt

To understand each patient's uniqueness is to be able to maximize their healthpotential to a degree many thought not possible. Our patients have recoveredfrom numerous so called “incurable” chronic conditions by understanding theirmakeup, the reasons they became ill and addressing the causal factors in eachcase while simultaneously creating the conditions for health to flourish. Part ofthe challenge is to help patients understand they need not accept the dismaloutlook painted for them by so many doctors nor accept symptomatictreatments whether from standard or “alternative” doctors as their onlysolution.

I was born somewhat a runt and I had to learn to live within certain runtlimitations. Yet as I round the corner on sixty I look back with satisfaction atwhat I have been able to achieve, at being able to reverse a chronic diseasecondition and enjoy my life as an adult. A Chihuahua cannot become a GreatDane…but the Chihuahua that I was born as, with right knowledge and effortovercame chronic disease and become like a Jack Russell Terrier. I amenormously thankful for having learned from doctors who were pioneers inNatural Hygiene, Clinical Nutrition and Clinical Epidemiology as well as from my

Page 58: INHS Hygienic Review 2008 Issue 1

own trials and errors how to understand my unique attributes and achieve mypotential as one of six billion unique individuals on planet earth.

I have read the hand of cards nature dealt me and learned how to play them ina productive manner. I have also been blessed in having the opportunity toassist many patients who were once chronically ill do the same.
