AN AFRICAN COMPANY02
TELL ME AND I FORGET, TEACH ME AND I MAY REMEMBER,
BENJAMIN FRANKLIN
INVOLVE ME AND I LEARN.
When we founded our firm in 1994, its name was carefully
chosen because of its meaning and our intentions to not
only do well but also to do good.
We have achieved this by focusing on doing a thoroughly
good job in technical terms and in the service that we
provide to our clients, as well as to the people affected by
the projects.
Themba provides consulting services in infrastructure
development. These services range from pure civil and
structural engineering to a multi-disciplinary offering
encompassing all the built environment professions.
One of the philosophies of the company, when planning
a project, is to encourage the involvement of those for
whom the project is being provided, so that it ultimately
becomes “theirs”, and consequently they ensure that it is
maintained.
Those who have worked on a project, and more
importantly, been trained whilst working on it, are likely to
regard it as being theirs.

THE IMPORTANCE OF TRANSPORTATION
Amongst the most important elements in developing the economy of a
country or a region is a well-developed and maintained transportation
infrastructure. This applies both at a macro and a micro scale. Transport
systems fulfil a major role in the economy and society, involving a wide
range of industries and services, and serving all the people affected by
them. Themba provides exceptional quality and expertise in this field.

THE IMPORTANCE OF WATER SUPPLY
An adequate supply of safe, fresh water is a basic human need. Clean
water is of course equally essential to plant and animal life, which in
turn affects human life. Furthermore, its provision and maintenance is
also a necessity in certain industries. It is thus a resource that must be
continuously provided, nurtured and protected. Such protection includes
the proper collection and treatment of all forms of wastewater.
AREAS OF EXPERTISE WITHIN WATER SUPPLY
• Master Planning, Investigations & Feasibility Studies
• Abstraction and Treatment
• Bulk Supply Pipelines and Storage
• Distribution and Reticulation
• Demand-, Pressure- and Loss Management
09
WATER AND SANITATION
THE IMPORTANCE OF SANITATION
In general, humankind harnesses water for its own use and after such use,
disposes of it into the same water courses from where it was originally
sourced. The more mature the water course, the greater the use to which
the water has previously been put. It is essential, therefore, that the full
water cycle is well managed.
AREAS OF EXPERTISE WITHIN SANITATION
• Investigations & Rehabilitation
• Sewer Reticulation Networks
• Collector, Sub-Outfall & Outfall Sewers
• Pipe Bridges
• Wastewater Treatment

airspace/life span, etc.
• Planning of cell development and leachate management
• Monitoring & managing the operations, and ultimate closure of the site.
TRANSFER STATIONS
• In certain instances, where the distances between the waste source(s)
and the landfill(s) are too great, and where waste types need to be
separated, logistics require the provision of transfer stations.

STREETSCAPE
• Projects, be they buildings or infrastructure, reach points in their life
cycles when they are in need of revitalisation.
• In the case of buildings, the works to be carried out generally amount
to a facelift, with particular regard to finishes, but occasionally involve
more robust measures being taken.
• In the case of infrastructure, the interventions are frequently very
significant.
• Measures that are typically taken on an urban development and
upgrade project are described next.
• They result in an environment that is safe and attractive to the people
who frequent the area, with convenient access, that is conducive to
service-related business.

TYPICAL MEASURES TO ACHIEVE THE DESIRED RESULT
• Widening and beautifying sidewalls, thus encouraging pedestrian
traffic, non-motorised transport and related business activity
• Providing benches, refuse collection and ablution facilities, points of
rest and points of interest
• Where appropriate, modifying vehicular traffic flow patterns through
minimising private vehicular through traffic

SOUTH AFRICAN NATIONAL ROADS AGENCY LIMITED
ETIENNE TERBLANCHE PR ENG
REGIONAL MANAGER NORTHERN REGIONS
This is to certify that Mr B B Dube is well known to me and my colleagues here
at the design and construction division of The South African National Roads
Agency Limited (SANRAL) and is in control of some road bridge projects
currently undertaken by the Agency.
In particular was responsible for the rehabilitation of five road bridges along
National Route 11 between Ermelo and Middelburg, which handled in an
exemplary professional manner.
His service was excellent and speaks of experience.
Mr Dube is also recognised amongst his professional colleagues in the civil
engineering industry as a person dedicated to his profession and who does
things first time right.
ARCHWAY PROJECTS
JEFF PIPE PR ENG; PR CPM; MSAICE
I have worked with Themba on a variety of projects within the Johannesburg
Inner City area. All of the projects were “brown field”, making it necessary to
work within / make changes to existing infrastructure to make the projects
work. As a result all the projects presented huge challenges that had to be
overcome within tight budgets and time frames.
Themba produced great engineering solutions that resulted in the success of
each of the projects.
Themba’s performance was very professional and pro-active and I hence
recommend their employment as consulting engineers.
