VW Golf 8The digital cockpit in the new Golf 8 comes with a high-resolution 10.25-inch color display in the instrument cluster and a 10.25-inch color display in the head unit. With the optional Head-up Display, the windshield of the Golf 8 even becomes a projection surface where speed, assistance system information or navigation instructions can be displayed.

In addition, the Golf also offers an optional voice control system which tries to catch up with competitors such as the Mercedes-Benz A-Class. The assistant, which can be activated with a simple „Hey VW“ or „Hey Volkswagen“, undergoes a continuous learning process and also understands free speech like „I‘m cold“. The We Connect Plus online voice control is even better at understanding the driver’s needs.

A definite eye-catcher is the Touch slider used for climate control, which was already presented in the Seat study el-Born.

Pushing the Touch Slider works quite reliably while it takes some getting used to the sensor’s reaction and the resulting gesture control. We Connect‘s online service is included by default. By using a mobile phone app, the driver can, for instance, check the range, open the doors, display the parking position or activate the parking heater. If, by any chance, you happen to have several Golf 8 models in your garage, simply upload your profile in the cloud and store certain vehicle settings. You can then effortlessly access them in every new Golf 8.

With the help of the Alexa app, you can even operate your smart Home while on the move and, for example, turn on the heat so you come home to a cozy and warm living room. In short, with the new Golf 8 you can do much more than just drive a car.

The user can move around the main menu and various submenus to switch the radio station, songs, or photos.

The position and head unit orientation towards the driver ensures good accessibility to the gestic input.

The gestures to control the Discover Pro are right-to-left and left-to-right, top-to-bottom and bottom-to-top, single hand gestures. In comparison to the gesture control in the BMW X7 there is no substantial additional value as opposed to interacting with the system via touchscreen.

The detection of gestures often required several attempts.Therefore, the input modality should be classified as deficient.

In addition to the natural speech recognition in the new Golf 8 the driver can make use of gestic input. It does take some practice to learn how the sensors react. Still, once you have gotten the hang of it you can use it to switch pages in the menu and operate the radio.

By tapping and sliding across the different areas the temperature, the audio settings and the screensaver function can be adjusted.

Therefore, there is no need to click through several submenus. This interaction is unique and not comparable to any other interaction concept we have analyzed in 21 vehicles on screens.

It takes some time to get used to operating the Touch slider while driving. Since there is no haptic feedback, it is particularly difficult to find the right position for your finger without looking at the Touch slider.

It takes several swipes to set the temperature from the lowest to the maximum temperature. Compared to an ordinary temperature scroll wheel it is no improvement in terms of the usability.

A highlight regarding the interaction via touch input is the so-called Touch slider which is located directly next to the head unit and has already been presented in the Seat study el-Born.

The instrument cluster can be configured individually. With just a few clicks it transforms from the classic display with speedometer and rev counter into a combination of navigation map and media display. There is no central push-turn control; the system is operated via the head unit touch screen, touch slider, gestic or by voice control. The tiles in the head unit can be arranged individually with a long press. In addition, the driver can create shortcuts, for example, for the media menu or telephone.

With the so-called touch control centers right next to the head unit and the instrument cluster, as well as the Touch slider to operate the temperature and the audio volume, VW presents an input concept with a reduced number of buttons. But what does this mean in terms of numbers? In the end there is no crucial difference to the model of the same segment (Δ-2). Nevertheless the Golf 8 appears more minimalistic than the A-class since most of the controls can be found on the steering wheel.

The Touch slider next to the head unit should be mentioned as a new element of a minimalistic appearance. However, less is not always more. Especially while driving it is much more difficult to regulate sound or the temperature by positioning the finger on the Touch slider and slide it in different directions as opposed to using a scroll wheel. Still, the Golf 8 shows that there is an innovative way to optically reduce the in-vehicle-infotainment controls and present new ways of interacting.

We will increase the number of units as soon as we can offer vehicles, available on the American and Asian markets in addition to the European market as well.
