short-term reduction in student numbers or whether it will be sustained over a longer period. Whether it is a short-term or longer-term situation, the Board’s allegiance the commitment to providing the resources for an excellent quality educational experience for our students is as strong as ever.

Following this article, you can see an overview of the school’s finances for the 2013-2014 school year. ISS, a non-profit foundation, operates within an approved annual budget for each school year. Our school budgeting year goes from July 1 to June 30 and our fiscal year runs from January 1 through December 31. The school’s accounts are annually audited by Ernst & Young, Norway. As is typical for most fee-charging schools, the major income is from tuition payments and the major expenditures are for employee compensations.

The pie charts attached will indicate how the school’s approved budget allocates funds on both expenditures and income. The total budget on the expenditure side is NOK 129 million, with the lion’s share of it, as in nearly all schools, going toward compensations, which is nearly NOK 103 million.

The approved budget includes a positive result predicted at NOK 2,3 million, which is designated toward “paying back” our reserves from what was used in the most recent construction. Normally that positive result would have been set at NOK 4 million, but because of the reduction in students, the Board has decided to lower the target of its annual re-payment to reserves to avoid a higher tuition rate. Every school that is prudently managed has a reserve fund and the Board has chosen to slow down the process this year of “repaying itself” from the funds that were drawn down to pay for the construction project. Because of the combination of the school’s reserve funds plus the contributions from Stavanger, Sandnes, Sola and Randaberg Kommune, and Rogaland Fylkeskommune, it was not necessary to take out a bank loan to pay for the construction. So the school is fortunate not to have to pay loan interest.

The financial charts in this Informer will also be placed on Edline should you wish to refer to them at a later date. Our Financial Manager, Linn Åsheim, and I are also always happy to explain any questions that may come up.

In this issue of the Informer, I would also like to share with you some information about the men and women who make up our ISS Board of Trustees. Our current Board includes the following individuals who offer their time in this important governance role:

From the Director:Just like that, here we all are again! Summer seemed to rush by and watching our students settle purposefully back into classrooms is a reminder of the important role that a good school routine plays in a child’s life.

We have welcomed our new families and our new employees and things are back in action. Between our dedicated employees and our wonderfully positive Parent Association, it is good to see the school back in action with kids in classrooms after a summer that was filled with the sounds of workers’ tools rather than children’s voices.

Later in this issue you will see the fine results from our International Baccalaureate and IGCSE examinations. A record number of ISS candidates—53 in total--earned their IB diplomas when the results were made public in July. We are proud of their efforts and proud of all our graduating seniors whether they earned IB diplomas or IB certificates. ISS is committed to the idea that the IB diploma is the best pre-university preparation available and whether a student earns the requisite points to receive the coveted IB diploma or not, they will find their university experience to be enhanced by the hard work and engagement in their studies they encountered during their final years at ISS. IB Coordinator Lynn Park’s message will also highlight the strong IGCSE results that students earned as well. Fully 50% of our students earned either an “A” or an “A*” on their IGCSE exams. Results like those only happen through hard work by both students and teachers. Congratulations all!

Another annual event that happens each September is that the ISS Board of Trustees makes its decision on the official tuition rate for the following school year. The 2013-2014 tuition rate has been set at NOK 205,000. This is fully 15% higher than last year’s tuition, which is a significant increase. The main reason for the increase is less an increase in expenses, but rather a decrease in the number of company/military sponsored children in the school. In other words, the costs have gone down from our 2013-2014 last draft budget in the spring, but the revenue has also gone down creating a negative impact with a resulting higher tuition rate. Because we have approximately sixty fewer company/military students than last year, there was a corresponding increase in the fees. In June, the private rates were set by the Board of Trustees at NOK 128,000 for Grades 10-12 and NOK 68,000 for Kindergarten-Grade 9.

And finally myself, Dr. Linda Duevel, who sits on the Board in my role as ISS Director and I am an American citizen.

I thank the members of the Board of Trustees for their willingness to devote their time and talents to the governance of the school. The ISS students are the beneficiaries of the hard work of the Board. I would also like to thank Tor Minsaas, the father of two ISS graduates and a current high school student, who served as the Board Chair for a number of years and Gro Kielland, also the mother of an ISS graduate, who also served as a Board member. Both Mr. Minsaas and Ms. Kielland resigned from the Board during the summer and I would like to thank them for their long service to the school. The Board currently has a process underway to consider new candidates for membership.

While it may seem a reverse of the expected, I wanted to start off this school year’s first Informer with an ending. The following lines are from the graduation remarks of a high school principal shared at a graduation ceremony in the spring.

But as I was reading them, I found them to be as apt at the beginning of a new school year as they would be at the end. And so, with thanks to Principal Dwight Carter, I share with you his words of wisdom—they work as well for adults as they do for students!

“Be the first to apologize.

Most reality TV shows aren’t reality, so don’t pattern your life after the characters on these shows. Manners are not old school or old fashioned. They are a necessity.

Learn to listen to understand, not just to respond.

Reread as many Dr. Seuss books as possible. They are chock full of life lessons.

Listen to your parents. Most of the time, they really do know what they are talking about.

If you have to ask if an article of clothing is too short, too high, too low, too tight, or too anything, then you probably shouldn’t wear it.

Every aspect of your life doesn’t have to be shared on Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, Vine, Flicker, SnapChat, or any other form of social media. Please Pause Before You Post.

Technology can’t replace our need for real face to face interaction, so show interest in others by asking questions about their lives.

You are a role model and a hero to somebody.

Instead of making excuses; make choices.

Choose to be a life-long learner by reading on a regular basis.

Extend to others the same grace you want extended to you.

Failure and mistakes are life lessons. Learn from them and move on.

Ride a bike. Take walks. Doodle.

Be the type of person who others are sad to see go.

Once you figure out your “why” … your “what” and “how” will be easy!

Finally, enjoy all the experiences life has to offer!

Dear Parents & Students,

Welcome to the academic year 2013– 2014.

As the school approaches the end of the first month it is great to see the energy and enthusiasm that both students and staff bring into to the buildings at the beginning of each school year. Whether they are catching up with old´ friends or welcoming new one the energy generated in the building is exciting to watch.

In August of last year I was able to share with you that we were embarking on the a journey of re-accreditation with both the Council of International Schools (CIS) and New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC). For those of you who may be new to the concept of accreditation or just need a reminder I thought it would be pertinent to provide a short overview.

The accreditation process has long been recognized in international school circles as a highly effective means of initiating and maintaining school improvement and demonstrating adherence to a set of publicly stated standards. There are a number of benefits associated with the award of accreditation to a school, but the main aim of this evaluation program is to provide an opportunity to improve the quality of the education offered at the school through a rigorous process of self-examination followed by an objective external appraisal by a team of peers, focusing on student learning and well-being.

Over the past twelve months or so as part of the process, ISS has conducted a community wide survey and constructed teams including staff, students, parents and board members to review all aspects of our operation under the sections outlined in the diagram below.

As we start this academic year our task now is to complete this committee work which recognises our achievements but also highlights areas in which we could improve upon and incorporate these findings into the school’s strategic and operational planning process.

In January 2014 we plan to send our full report to both CIS and NEASC. The re-accreditation process will culminate with a week-long re-accreditation team visit during the first week of April. The Team Visit will be conducted by a team of trained and suitably qualified administrators and teachers, drawn from other CIS/NEASC member schools. The primary function of the Visiting Team is to assist the school by providing an objective assessment of the conclusions of the self-study and by articulating specific recommendations for school improvement. Team members visit classrooms and other work places and campus facilities, examine documentation compiled by the school, and speak with students, parents, members of the administration, faculty and support staff, and the Governing Body. They examine all aspects of the school in the light of the self-study findings, the school’s own Guiding Statements and unique demography, and the Standards for Accreditation focusing on student learning and well-being.

At the end of the process the CIS and NEASC boards will review carefully the Visiting Team Report and consider the recommendation of the Visiting Team relative to re- accreditation of the ISS.

As you can see a great deal of work has already been completed within this process and I would like to thank all those who have been involved for their endeavours. Self-reflection is always the best starting point for learning and growing whether as an individual or in an organisation such as a school. The process for us is an empowering one as it truly helps us to recognise all the great thing we do, but also provides us with the opportunity to grow and develop. As my eighty year old granny (who wasn t a management guru) used to say ´Good, better, best, let it never rest, until your good is better and your better best .

Our School FinancesInternational School of Stavanger is a non-profit entity, which operates within an approved annual budget for the school year. Our school budgeting year goes from July 1 to June 30 and our fiscal year runs Jan 1- Dec 31.

The school accounts are annually audited by Ernst & Young, Norway. Approximately 94% of ISS revenue comes from tuition, 5% from grants, and 1% through fees. The remaining comes from bank interest and other miscellaneous income.

This year, 65 graduating students took International Baccalaureate (IB) examinations, taking the full Diploma Programme of 6 subjects (3 Higher and 3 Standard), the Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge, and CAS (Creativity, Action, Service).

In order to obtain the Diploma, students must gain at least 24 points and fulfil a range of other conditions defined by IB. This year, 81.5% of these students achieved the full Diploma. The highest score achieved by our students who took all the Diploma examinations was 42 points out of a maximum of 45 possible points, with a mean total score of 32 points for those who achieved the Diploma.

IB examinations are scored on a scale from 1 (lowest) to 7 (highest), and our students who achieved the Diploma in May had a mean score of 5.11 in each of their subjects. These are excellent results! Any candidate who does not achieve the full Diploma receives results documentation indicating their performance in each subject.

May 2013 has again produced some fine results, in a year when the overwhelming majority of our graduating seniors participated in the full Diploma Programme.

ISS has a policy of encouraging all students to consider stretching themselves by working towards

the full IB Diploma, and does not select students for the programme. Despite the policy of open access, ISS averages compare very favourably with the world averages in most subject areas. Both the students and their teachers are to be congratulated on this achievement.

At ISS, the IB Diploma has become the normal programme for almost all of our graduating seniors, and we are proud of our open access policy. Even if students do not achieve the full Diploma, just missing the point requirements, the experience of following the programme is very valuable. For some students, it is particularly important to achieve the results to earn studiekompetanse which allows them to access Norwegian universities and funding from Statens Lånekasse for university study anywhere in the world.

A small number of students choose to re-take subjects to improve their scores, and I am happy to report that graduates who re-took examinations this May did increase their grades, allowing them to move on to the next phase of their education. I have updated the statistics for 2012 in the chart to reflect this. I congratulate all our IB students on their results.

The chart below shows a summary of the IB results from ISS over the last five years compared with world averages.

This year 55 students from ISS took one or more International General Certificate of Education (IGCSE) examinations, including some students who chose to re-take examinations where they had not achieved the grade that they wished last year.

IGCSE are graded from A* to G (with A* - C normally accepted as ‘pass’ grades by British universities). A U grade (unclassified) is given if for some reason students do not produce sufficient work of an adequate standard to be awarded a grade on a particular examination.

ISS does not select those students who may take the IGCSE. The decision to enter for IGCSE

examinations is a personal one, made by the student and parent, depending on the student’s educational background and future plans.

This year a total of 52 of our 10th grade students chose to take IGCSE examinations, and for those that do so, the final grades are extremely important (especially if they go on to apply to British universities through the UCAS system).

The secret to success in high school is simple: prudent academic planning, self-advocacy, and extracurricular involvement. The stress and pressure that coincides with college preparedness can also lead to some beautiful character building. Don t be afraid to ask questions, rely on your support systems, and be there for one another.

High school only comes once, and to thrive within the supportive walls of ISS is a gift.

TESTING The following tests will be administered at ISS. There are a limited number of tests for each exam and they are available on a first come/first served basis.

The dates for the tests are as follows:

PSAT/ NMSQT Saturday, October 19, 2013 at 7:45 am

Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test/National Merit Qualifying Test administration for 10th and 11th graders: This test is useful both as practice for the SAT and as a predictor of SAT scores. For 11th graders, the PSAT/NMSQT also serves as a basis for awarding some merit scholarships. Taking the test will gain students access to a college and career search tool to aid them in their postsecondary plans.

To register for this exam:

• sign up on the clipboard outside of the Counseling Office

• transfer 120 NOK to the ISS account number 3201 09 31567, and

• mark “PSAT Test Fee, STUDENT NAME,” by September 13, 2013.

The SAT I, SAT II, and ACT tests are standardized tests utilized by U.S. universities as part of the admissions process. As each university has its own requirements as to which test(s) they will accept be sure to check their websites to determine which tests to take. Many universities will accept either the SAT I or ACT. In this case, it is the student’s best interest to take both as colleges will consider the highest scores.

12th graders - If you plan to enter a U.S. university in the fall 2014 and the SAT is a requirement then you must take it this first semester. If you took it last spring and would like to try to improve your score, you can take it this fall as well.

11th graders - You should take this exam on May 3, 2014 if you have plans to study in North America. This exam measures verbal, mathematical reasoning ability and writing skills.

SAT II - Scholastic Aptitude Subject Test: Check the specific requirements of the universities to which you are applying to see if they require the SAT Subject tests. During one test date students may take up to three one hour subject tests that measure both knowledge and the ability to apply that knowledge in specific subject areas. They are administered on the same dates as the SAT I; however, the foreign language with listening exam is only offered in November (check www.collegeboard.com for availability). You cannot take both the SAT I and SAT II on the same testing date.

Greetings ISS High School Families!

Although it is hard to believe that school has now been in session for a full month, the High School Office has been forging ahead at top speed to ensure that all of our students are engaged in their academics, finding balance in their day-to-day activities, and researching their postsecondary options.

By now, we hope all our students have adjusted to new routines, challenging schedules, and exciting extracurricular activities.

On August 23rd, the Class of 2014 met for their first senior seminar to reflect, discuss, and plan for this next exhilarating chapter of their lives. We reviewed university and ISS application deadlines, checked in on the status of extended essays and personal statements, and heard some enlightening reflections from last year’s graduates. We were delighted to hear how well our graduates were doing with their transitions from high school to academia. Their key messages to success at ISS included balance, time and stress management, and relying on support systems throughout the year. These tips served them well, as our graduates have matriculated at a number of reputable colleges and universities:

The ACT test assesses students’ abilities in four academic areas - English, Mathematics, Reading, and Science Reasoning. Writing is offered as an option that we strongly recommend you register for; this is the Writing Plus option. The ACT is commonly required by public colleges and some private colleges in the US Midwest, West and South. Check for specific requirements on individual college websites.

12th graders - If you plan to enter a U.S. university in the fall 2014 and the ACT is a requirement then you must take it this first semester. If you took it last spring and would like to try to improve your score, you can take it this fall as well.

11th graders – You may wish to take this test in April.You may register at www.actstudent.org

TO ALL OUR CURRENT 12TH GRADE STUDENTS AND PARENTSSenior Seminar started on Friday, August 23rd and will be held during the last block on Friday 2.

Students have already begun to set up individual appointments with the counselors to discuss their plans for next year. Please see Ms Brown or Ms.Jetabut to set up an appointment if you have not yet done so…time is of the essence!

If you are applying through the UCAS system for Oxford, Cambridge, or a law, dental, medical, or veterinary science program your UCAS application must be completed by September 13, 2013. A special session of Senior Seminar will be held on September 3rd for these students to register on UCAS. Other students applying to the UK are welcome to participate but there will be other registration sessions available during Senior Seminar.

If you are applying through the UCAS system for Oxford, Cambridge, a dental, medical, or veterinary science program, or a law course remember to sign up to take any necessary entrance exams (UKCAT, LNAT, BMAT etc.). These are not offered at ISS so check the university requirements and register with the examining body.

If you are applying Early Decision or Early Action to a

college or university in the United States, please submit a copy of your application to the Counseling Office by October 1st. If the Early application deadline is before October 15, please see your counselor to discuss when to turn in your materials.

All other university applications are due by November 15th to guarantee timely submission prior to the Christmas break. Students are encouraged to complete and turn in their materials before the due date so that they can be processed sooner.

Any student who is considering applying to a North American college or university is strongly encouraged to sign up for and take the PSAT exam in October and at least one session of the ACT Plus Writing or the SAT I during second semester this year.

May 2013 has again produced some fine results, in a year when the overwhelming majority of our graduating seniors participated in the full Diploma Programme. ISS is a non-selective school and has a policy of encouraging all students to consider stretching themselves by working towards the full IB Diploma, and does not select students for the programme.

IGCSE results were also made available to students on 16 August. I would like to sincerely congratulate these students on their impressive results.

As you may recall, ISS was well represented at Unge Forskere (National Young Researchers Competition) final last school year.

Maria Zakharova won 1st prize which consisted of NOK 10,000, plus a trip to the European Union’s Young Scientists in Prague, plus a trip to the Stockholm Nobel Institute International Youth Science Seminar, plus a trip to Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF), the world’s largest international pre-college science competition in Los Angeles!

Stefano Croatto won 2nd prize of NOK 7,000 and also went to Intel ISEF in Los Angeles.

Rachel Eden won 2nd prize of NOK 7,000 and attended the 24th International Wildlife Research Week in Switzerland.

Marcus Lima won 2nd prize of NOK 7,000 and went to China to attend the Adolescents Science & Technology Innovation Contest.

Lisa Koninx won 3rd prize of NOK 5,000 and went to the innovation contest in China Ina B. Arneson won 3rd prize of NOK 5,000 and also went to the innovation contest in China. Welcome to the 2013-2014 High School Year.

Already there have been numerous events and activities that have taken place in the High School.

During our Senior Seminar on Friday 3 23 August, 5 returning graduates shared their experiences of the IB diploma and college admissions process with our current Grade 12 students. It was a highly informative and insightful session.

Friday 23 August also kicked off our Student Council’s Back to School Event. I would like to thank the Student Council Executive Committee who organized and ran an enjoyable evening for all the students.

On Saturday 24 August, the weather could not have been better for the International Awards trip. The International Awards involves in-school preparation work on navigation, health and safety, campcraft skills, environmental ethics, provision of maps, risk assessments compasses and pre planned checkpoints, and of course team work.

With the beginning of the school year, I would like to reflect on the IB and IGCSE results.

This year, 65 graduating students took International Baccalaureate (IB) examinations, taking the full Diploma Programme of 6 subjects (3 Higher and 3 Standard), the Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge, and CAS (Creativity, Action, Service).

In order to obtain the Diploma, students must gain at least 24 points and fulfil a range of other conditions defined by IB. This year, 81.5% of these students achieved the full Diploma. The highest score achieved by our students who took all the Diploma examinations was 42 points out of a maximum of 45 possible points, with a mean total score of 32 points for those who achieved the Diploma. IB examinations are scored on a scale from 1 (lowest) to 7 (highest), and our students who achieved the Diploma in May had a mean score of 5.11 in each of their subjects. These are excellent results!

Welcome to the Middle School!

I would like to welcome back to all returning Middle School families and extend a warm welcome to all Middle School families who are new to Norway and/or ISS. I hope you all had a relaxing and enjoyable summer holiday - it’s hard to believe that we have been back for nearly four weeks already. I suspect that your children are glad to be back too (although I’m not sure they will admit that, of course).

The school year has begun! From this end, I believe your son or daughter has had a smooth start to the year. All students are now busy with their new schedules for the school year and getting to know all their new teachers.

I mentioned at our first assembly of the school year, that ISS is a community and the MS is only a small piece of that whole community, so it is important that our students understand that the hallways, corridors are busy and we need to be respectful of others.

As always we continue with our theme of ‘Respect’ in the Middle School this year – respect for each other, ourselves and respect for our facilities.

Homeroom

In homeroom, the main focus has been on the ’settling in’ process. Some students have been issued with an agenda (for organizational purposes) and they all have an individual locker (for book, binders etc.). All students should now have a lock (with combination) on their locker. Students should keep their locker locked at all times during the day. We will also have ’surprise’ locker check days....just to make sure that no undesirable items are lost in the back somewhere! Our homeroom theme this month is, not surprisingly, entitled ‘Organization and Time Management’ and students will be involved in discussions and activities related to this theme. In addition, we will also focus on note-taking skills and study skills.

6tH and 7tH Grade iPads

All 6th grade students will shortly have their own iPad. They will keep this device in school for the time being. This will also help students with their organization.

7th Grade students already received them and 6th grade received them on Tuesday 3rd September.

Middle School students are encouraged to participate in some of the activities on offer within the middle school but I would also encourage caution. It is very tempting for a Middle School student to want to get involved in every activity that is on offer!

Please work together with the Middle School teachers in helping your son/daughter to understand the importance of making wise choices!

Here are some examples of activities for Quarter1:

Middle school students in grades 7 and 8 were encouraged to campaign for a position on the executive committee of the Middle School Student Council (StuCo).

There are four positions: President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer. For the first time this year we have added two NEW positions: Service Learning Coordinator and Creative Director.

Student Council is responsible for organizing many of the Middle School events throughout the year as well as showing leadership and helping all students to think of others. Students who wanted to be part of the executive committee have already campaigned and their campaign culminated in some wonderful individual speeches on August 30th.

All Middle School students listened very respectfully to all the speeches and then cast their vote.

The middle school has four houses this year and each house is made up of an equal number of students from grades 6, 7 and 8 which encourages cross- grade level communication and interaction. During each quarter, students will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of activities, community and service projects in order to gain house points. Students will vote for their new house names next week.

This was the first Middle School event of the year!

Thanks to our Middle School Liaisons, and their team of helpers for the superb organization of this event. The Middle School students had a fantastic time – and the weather was glorious and sunny !!

The MS is a busy place and we have many activities and events planned for the year. I will keep you informed!

I hope to see you at our Open House tomorrow night - Thursday 5th September starting at 18:30 in the theatre. BBQ pleasures Happily anticipating the new school year


Welcome to a wonderful new school year.

In the last article in The Informer, I shared that there would be a change in leadership with a principal for Early Childhood (pre-school, Kindergarten and Grade One) and on for the Primary School, Grades 2-5. All seems to be going well with the transition, and we welcome Ms Jill Raven as the Early Childhood Principal.

I send a special welcome to the children joining ISS this school year. You have had to learn new routines and get to know new classmates and teachers. This can be overwhelming at times, so if you have questions or need some assistance, feel free to ask any teacher, principal or office staff.

We welcome new ISS faculty. Teaching in Grade 2 are Ms Lindsay Miller and Mr. Trent Williams. In Grade 3, we welcome Mr. Ted Varga. We also welcome a third Grade 5 Band and Music teacher, Ms Sanna Tranberg, Dr. Jack Raven as our counselor, Ms Andrea Strutin teaching in learning support and our new librarian, Ms Emily Douglas. After orientation to ISS from 1 August, the teachers are now feeling like a part of the team and we appreciate all the energy and enthusiasm they bring to the rest of the staff.

Professional development among our teachers and staff is very important so we keep up with the best methods for student learning. New teachers bring ideas

to our school, and teachers are continually attending courses. Some of these courses are taken during the summer, so teachers are going to school when students have holiday. Dr. Linda Duevel and I teach graduate courses to keep our feet securely planted in our greatest passion—teaching and learning. Teachers also keep a focus on learning by attending a variety of courses and workshops to continually develop professionally and share what they learn with teachers at ISS.

For example, this summer Ms Jeanne Bouvier, Mr Erik Hove and Ms Kari Hvidevold attended courses with Teachers College of Columbia University so we can better implement readers and writers workshops, an initiative at ISS and many international schools. It is a challenging course, and difficult to gain enrollment, so we were very pleased to have them attend.

The teachers come back with ideas to initiate after learning from renowned experts in their field, such as Lucy Calkins and Patricia MacLachlan.

It was a great tribute to ISS when, among the ca. 1300 teachers and 500 other visitors at the course, Ms Hvidevold was chosen to share her story she had developed following the same writing process that we teach our students as an example of exceptional practice. The story involves a child who is confident on the outside and insecure on the inside. We look forward to a time the story may be published. Well done, Ms Hvidevold!

Something bit me, I think ......

Primary School NewsYou have had a chance to meet teachers at Meet the Teacher Day and at Open House on 27 August. There are many events coming up to get a view of how your child is doing in school.

“Share in Our Learning” is a chance for you to attend the first 45 minutes of the school day, 8:30-9:15, so you can get a feel for your child s work day. Each grade level has a separate day, and you are very welcome to attend.

During the school year, there are also assemblies in the theatre where children show us what they have been learning, and the first is with our Grade 2 classes on 24 October. Student-teacher-parent conferences are coming up on 8 November and 21 February.

Share in Our Learning has been a part of our way to connect home and school for many years. It is similar to your children coming to your workplace. The tempo changes and there are a few more interests in the room. However, being in the same place where your children work and watching them can give you an understanding of how you can support that learning when you come home. You will see how children attend to their work and how your child manages resources. Habits that enhance learning can be reinforced when you know what your children are expected to do and can do at school. Here are dates to mark on your calendar.

The International Schools’ Assessment (ISA) will be administered to students in Grades 3, 5, 7, 8, 9 and 10 on 24 and 25 September. Students do not need to study specifically for these tests. It is more important that the students come to school rested as on any school day. These tests are used to help assess student needs. The tests also help ISS review its curricular offerings to ensure the curriculum meets international standards. Children are getting involved in many activities in school, after school and on weekends. I am pleased to see so many children signing up for drama, dance on Friday afternoons, cross-country running, volleyball, soccer on Friday evenings and Saturday mornings and many of the other activities offered by the school, parents or in the greater community. It is wonderful to see you at these and other events, and if not before, I look forward to seeing you at the Great Big Back to School Social on 13 September.

´Bop to Pop´ Dance Class is back!

Classes start Friday 13th September 2013! • No cost! Lessons are free!

Dance Class is shortly going to begin again in the Primary School and is offered from Grade 1 through Grade 5.

The classes are led by a group of highly committed, highly motivated students both from Middle and High School, overseen by an ISS teacher.

The High School students carry out the classes for their CAS programme (Community, Action, Service), an important part of the IB, which aims to provide students with opportunities for personal growth, self-reflection, intellectual, physical and creative challenges, as well as an awareness of themselves as responsible members of their communities.

The students leading the dance classes aim to energize the children, foster the children’s love for both music and dance whilst also helping to develop their co-ordination, which plays an important role in many other areas of their lives.

All classes take place on Fridays from 3.15 - 4.15pm and it is highly likely, based on last year’s numbers that there will be a class for each grade level.

I have chosen early childhood education as the focus of the next steps in my career because I believe it is a vital time in a child’s intellectual, emotional and social development.

Early childhood (3 years to 7 years) is a crucial period. It is during these years that children gain a sense of self and learn to associate this identity with the people around them. This is a foundational stage that equips young learners with the experiences, skills and aptitudes needed to reach their fullest potential as learners. This is the time for the lasting development of “learning to learn” for each child.

I believe that purposeful early childhood education is critical for a life of success in the 21st century. I have chosen this as my career because I am passionate about our youngest learners and passionate about making a difference in the lives of children. These young people are capable learners and represent our future.

They deserve our best.

It has been a successful first few weeks for our Early Childhood (Preschool- Grade One) students.

All of our young learners are transitioning into the ISS school environment. Routines are being established and classroom communities are developing.

The children are exploring a variety of spaces, activities as well as getting to know each other.

Children in Preschool and Kindergarten have already been out on a fieldtrip to the beach!

I originally come from Vancouver Island Canada. My husband, Dr. Jack Raven, (new Early Childhood & Primary school Counselor), and I have been living and working in international schools for the past 18 years. We began in the field of international education as classroom teachers in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Over 10 years, we studied and grew professionally leaving the school in administrative roles. From Jeddah, we moved to Beijing, China where we continued to work in administrative roles, study and professionally grow for another 8 years.

International Friendship Group – SWEC – YEPADear ISS Community, Please take a look at the notice listing the charities which IFG and SWEC supported during the last school year. Both groups were very busy and the charities chosen reflect the wide interests of High School and Primary School students. On behalf of both groups I would like to thank everyone who supported the projects last year – sponsors for the Walk for Wildlife, audiences at the UN concert, HS, MS and PS Musicals, PS Music Concerts and the PS Spring Fling, plus those who donated (and / or bought!) baked goods at these events.

Thank you to the PA for inviting IFG and SWEC to help with the two successful Fun Runs.

Thank you to the Friday Dance Groups for their donation after the end-of-year recital. Thank you to everyone who took part in the Love-in-a Box collection and who bought Christmas Cards and raffle tickets. Together you helped to raise kr 105 421 for us to give away to deserving causes. In addition to all of the above, the groups planted another six trees in the school grounds. This has been a bi-annual event for many years and is part of a global effort to ‘green’ our planet. Each Spring and Autumn equinox communities around the globe plant trees at approximately 12 noon local time. This is an exciting concept for all ages – 24 hours of tree planting in countries all around the world. The collections of stamps for TUBFRIM and used spectacles for Vision Aid Overseas were ongoing again last year. Please, send us these items whenever possible. IFG is open to students in 9th – 12th grades.

SWEC is open to 4th and 5th graders.

Sunday, 22nd September: Sponsored Walk for the Marine Conservation Society’s work with our marine habitats. Flyers will be sent out with more details. Tuesday, 24th September until Friday 4th October: SWEC’s Sale to raise money for animal conservation. More information will be given later. Monday 21st October until Friday 1st November: The annual Christmas Child Love-in-a-Box collection. More details will be given later. Friday, 25th October: The annual United Nations Day Concert, 18:00 in the theatre. Let us know if you would like to perform! We have had a safety walk with Bedriftshelsetjenesten and I am glad to inform that the overall impression was good.

Our aim is as always – a safe and healthy working place for both students and staff - zero incidents, zero injuries and zero harm to the environment.

To reach this we need involvement from everybody and I invite you to send me a message if you see something that could be a risk. In that way we can take action before something happens.
