December 2012 Volume 10 Issue 6

Greetings 5M5 Lions,

Happy Holidays 5M5 Lions,

One of the many blessings we have as

Lions is having the holiday spirit in us

all year long. But somehow, we still

kick our service levels up a few extra

notches during the holidays. The Sal-

vation Army Bell Ringing Kickoff on

November 10th was a huge success.

Nine 5M5 Lions Clubs participated

helping to raise over $100,000 in one

day for Salvation Army. Most of the

clubs in the district will ring bells dur-

ing the holiday season. It’s not too late

for your club to participate.

Some of you know that my folks run a

food pantry through their church in the

northwest suburbs of Chicago. For the

past several years, I have been helping

them pass out turkey dinners on the

Tuesday before Thanksgiving. Unfor-

tunately, the number of people in need

was up 20% this year. The current eco-

nomic times affect people of all income

groups. Many of this year’s food re-

cipients had been giving last year. At

Thanksgiving dinner, I counted all of

my Lion friends among my many bless-

ings. Thank you for making a daily

difference in your communities with

your hearts and hands.

Remember that the Global Service Ac-

tion program for December / January is

“Relieving the Hunger!!.” Let's do our

best to help our food shelves with cash

and food donations.

The “Everyday Hero” and “John Lut-

ter” awards are trickling in. Every club

should use this opportunity to recog-

nize an important club member. A cou-

ple of hospitality rooms are also avail-

able. Please get your memorial service

remembrance information in today! I

look forward to visiting with all of you

at the Mid-Winter Convention.

Now is also the time for planning your

participation in the Special Olympic

Polar Bear Plunges. We have three

plunges in Hennepin County: Maple

Grove on February 2, Lake Calhoun on

March 2, and Eden Prairie on March 9.

Lion Rob Hed of the Hamel Lions Club

wins the award for being the first

plunger to contact me for a donation

this year. PCC Mike Molenda will be

plunging in Eden Prairie. Anyone in-

terested in joining Lion Mike’s team?

Clubs are participating by forming

plunge teams, helping with food vend-

ing, and by supporting other plungers.

ticipate in an exciting festive event,

DECEMBER 2012

To all the Members of 5M5

Well the first Holiday has past and all are gearing up

for the big one; Christmas. Yeah Santa is coming to town in 30 days ( I am writ-

ing this November 24th). Your Cabinet has been very

busy the last month. We have accomplished some classes to qualify them for

Guiding Lions and CEP. We have experts among us that can help anyone or any club.

With the District under the thumb of District Governor Dave we will succeed. He is doing a

great job. But 1st VDG and 2nd VDG are under his wing and shaping up to continue his quest.

The CEP (Club Excellence Program) is to help

all of you and we are here to do this. We have an up hill battle to do, but it is possible that we

will win the battle. We just need you to get a hold of us to help. The more I get involved with this wonderful district the more I want to

know. So please get a hold of one of us and let us into your world.

Well now that Christmas is coming and the first Holidazzle has taken place that means that the Mid-Winter Convention is just around the cor-

ner. Get those hospitality books ordered and the rooms booked and plan a fun filled week-

end in Bloomington. What is more fun than Germany’s Oktoberfest to celebrate in January. We have so many things going on that you

have to be part of it. This is not just for the officers of your club it is for all your members

to come and have some great LION fun. Come down and show your LION spirit, because we spend the year serving the community and it is

time to celebrate.

By: Lion Diane Nokk; 2nd Vice District Governor

Greetings fellow Lions,

Can you believe the weather

we are having? I can take this weather all the way through until April how about

you? Even with all this beau-tiful weather we are having, remember that the Mid-

Winter convention is rapidly approaching. We have one of the most exciting and fun

conventions around and I hope that all Lions are plan-

ning to participate as much as possible.

You must remember that this is YOUR convention! As a member of 5M5 Lions, this convention is put on for you. It is a way to meet and greet fellow

Lions from other clubs and re-establish friendships or make new ones. It is a way to honor the Lions that are no longer with us by attending the Memo-

rial Service. It is a way to learn about what things are going on in the district by attending the Busi-ness Meeting. The speakers this year will be truly

interesting and informative. With all this, there is also food! All hospitality rooms should be open on Friday and Saturday night so get your party on!

I am encouraging all clubs to make a point of enlisting all new members to come and be part of

the convention. It is a fun and interesting week-end and there is so much in which to partake. I hope that everyone will come away with a newly

refreshed sense of being a Lion. Each person should feel invigorated and excited to continue with the admiral work for which clubs in our district

are known. I look forward to seeing all of you at the conven-

tion. Also there will be a little something different

for those attending that will be a lot of fun, espe-

cially for the “first-timers” – and you do not have

to be a NEW Lion to be a “first-timer”. If you have

not been to a convention before – you qualify!

Yours in Service,

Lion Sonjia

First Vice District Governor

Mike Gruidl Co-chair, Lion’s annual Wild Game dinner The 39th annual Eden Prairie Lions Wild Game Din-ner will be held on Monday, December 3rd at Camp Eden wood in Eden Prairie. This year’s theme is ”Great Fishing In Alaska,” and will feature Lion Rick Fyhrlund as the main speaker. Rick recently returned from his 91st fish-ing trip to Alaska, and will share his many experi-ences and photos with the audience. Rick is past president of the Minneapolis southwest Lions, and is a very active member of the club. Former Eden Prairie Schools chef Herb DeRoma is in charge of preparing the wild game dinner. Appe-tizers will include a sample of smoked Alaskan Sockeye salmon prepared by Terry Eggan, president of the local Eden Prairie chapter of “Let’s Go Fish-ing For Seniors”. The Wild Game Dinner will also have a traditional raffle featuring many items donated by local mer-chants and restaurants. 100 percent of the funds raised are split equally between three local wild life charities, including the Eden Prairie Nature Center. Mike Grant, Eden Prairie’s outstanding football coach, will also reflect on this past season. There are still a few tickets available. Cost for the event is $15.00. Please call either Lion Mike Gruidl at (952)937-9024 or Lion Steve Wilson at (612) 805-0762, Wild Game Dinner co-chairs, for more information or to donate items for the wild life benefit raffle.
