Objectives

Foster, promote and co-ordinate research and developmentin all spheres of scientific, technological, social andeconomic activities;

Collaborative Research and Innovation Grant Scheme (CRIGS)

OBJECTIVES To improve the competitiveness of Mauritius and its collaboration

between Research and Industry.

Funding Matching grant of up to a maximum of Rs5M per project. The applicant(s)

will have to contribute to the project in cash and/or in kind.

Objectives To enhance the impact of Biotechnology on the economic

development of the Republic of Mauritius and spur innovation through

partnerships among local institutions and companies.

Funding Matching grant of up to a maximum of Rs5M per project. The applicant(s)

will have to contribute to the project in cash and/or in kind.

Purpose of

Scheme:

to encourage individuals, enterprises, industry and R&D institutions to take

advantage of the mechanisms for protecting innovation currently offered by

the industrial property system in the Republic of Mauritius. (e.g., patents and

registration of Industrial Designs)

Description of

Scheme:

Patent and Industrial Design applications can be submitted by individuals,

groups/teams, or organisations. The scheme provides for a 50% refund of the

registration costs for patent and industrial designs applications. The applicant

must be a Mauritian national, or in the case of an organisation/company must be

registered in the Republic of Mauritius. The applicant must be the true owner of

the intellectual property.

Patent and Industrial Design applications can be submitted by individuals, groups/teams, or organisations.

Scheme open to research institutions, teaching and training institutions, SMEs, industry, public and private organisations, and the public.

The applicant must be a Mauritian national, or in the case of an organisation/company must be registered in Mauritius; applicantmust be the true owner of the intellectual property.

The items eligible for claims under the IPPS are limited to 50% of the official fees for filing of applications for the grant of a Patent or registration of an Industrial Design.

Applications can be submitted any time during the year.

Technology Transfer Office at the MRC

The TTO currently functions as an operating unit of the Council in line with theMRC (Amendment) Act 2014 (Act No.1 of 2014), which mandates the Council toencourage commercial utilisation of the results of Research and Development(R&D) and innovation.

• IP Healthcheck: an IP assessment tool is being developed based on the existing model operated by the UKIntellectual Property Office (UK-IPO). It will be an online tool free to use and will provide guidance on keyIP issues covering Patents, Trademarks, Industrial Designs, Copyright and Confidential Information.

• IP Newsletter: The IP Newsletter will serve as a tool to disseminate IP information in the public domain,and will be produced as an e-publication targeting both the public and private sectors

• Exploratory study of the Mauritian ICT sector: this study will be aimed at mapping out the currentstatus of the ICT sector in terms of innovation and the use of IP during the past three years.

In the longer term, the TTO aims to develop the necessary technical skills and capacity to include:

• IP auditing of SMEs and larger enterprises;

• Undertaking technology and IP valuation of inventions disclosed to the TTO;

• Drafting and filing of patent and/or industrial design applications until issuance of certificates;

• Analysing market intelligence and competing technologies for determining the commercializationpotential of disclosures made to the TTO;

• Identifying and negotiating with suitable technology commercialisation partners;

• Drafting of legal documentation for commercialisation (licence agreements, formation of spin-off or jointventure companies); and

• Facilitation of access to professional Technology Transfer association (e.g., ATTP, AUTM)
