Put yourself in play in search of good, in the Church and in society, without fear, with courage and enthusiasm. Enter into the game with others and with God; do not be satisfied with a mediocre 'draw', but instead give the best of yourself, spend your life for what it is really worth and for what will last for ever. Do not be satisfied with merely drawing even: no, no! Go ahead, always seek victory!” “In sports clubs, one learns to welcome. Every athlete who wishes to join is welcome, they welcome each other. No to individualism! … Belonging to a sports club means rejecting every form of selfishness and isolation, and it is an opportunity to meet and be with others, to help each other, and to compete with mutual esteem and to grow in fraternity”. “I ask that all may participate, not only the best: everyone, with the advantages and limits that each person has, indeed helping the disadvantaged, like Jesus did. And I encourage you to continue your commitment to children in the outskirts of the city, through sport: with a ball to play with, you may also offer reasons for hope and trust”. Our faith equally asks us to trust in Jesus’ coaching in our lives, for us to be disciplined in the practice of His ways and to endure in faith and in His teachings through challenging times. As the Apostle Paul tells the Corinthians: Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. (1 Corinthians 9:24) In this spirit, we ask that the team’s play, the fans cheer and the coaches coach in such a way to win the prize! In this tournament, like in life, let us compete to win while trusting in the rules that promote fair play and keeping in mind that above all else, we play for love of the game, the same way we engage in faith for our love of the Lord. May the team that best displays the endurance, faith and discipline of a true Apostle of Christ, take home the Apostles’ Cup!

WHAT : THE APOSTLES’ CUP (BALL HOCKEY TOURNAMENT) MAY 23rd 2015

The APOSTLES’ CUP is an annual Ball Hockey Tournament. It is a fun and dynamic all day event where participants are given the chance to represent their parish, youth group or local community and compete, in the spirit of Christian Fellowship, to win the coveted Cup.

Why? :

To reach out and involve all the hockey players, hockey fans and hockey coaches in your community.

To promote teamwork, friendly competition and a spirit of Christian Fellowship through sports

THE SPIRIT OF THE TOURNAMENT :

What does hockey have to do with faith?

Why the ‘Apostles’ Cup’?

In an address to an Italian sports centre, Pope Francis said; “If there is no sports group in the parish, something is missing. … Sport in the community can be an excellent missionary tool, where the Church draws close to each person, helping him or her to improve and to encounter Jesus Christ”.

“I urge you not only to play, as you already do; put yourselves in play in life as you do in sport. Go ahead, always seek victory!”

“In sports clubs, one learns to welcome. Every athlete who wishes to join is welcome, they welcome each other. I urge all managers and trainers to be, first and foremost, welcoming people, able to keep the door open to give every person, especially the least fortunate, an opportunity to express himself. … I also hope you may experience the pleasure, the beauty of playing as a team, which is very important in life.

(1 Corinthians 9:24)

In this spirit, we ask that the team’s play, the fans cheer and the coaches coach in such a way to win the prize!

Each team will comprise of 6 - 12 players and 1 coach

Each community is permitted one team per age group

All games will have a minimum of 1 referee

Each team will play an equal number of 24-minute games and the winners of those games will advance to Playoff games (the Playoff win/loss points will also count in the team’s running score for the Cup)

Teams will field a maximum of 1 goalie and 5 players at any given time

“Catholic Rules” will be enforced (respect for players, referees and coaches)

NO ROUGH PLAY OR FOUL LANGUAGE WILL BE TOLERATED!

Penalty shot rule enforced for all infractions except for high stick infractions (see detailed rules)

3 judges will be present throughout the tournament to observe and score teams based on CREATIVES (Name, Banner, Cheer) & COMPOSURE (of Fans, of Team, of Coaches).

All games start with a short prayer

Detailed Tournament Rules will be forwarded by email to the coaches once your team is registered.

We are excited to promote an event that will display and celebrate the Catholic ideal of honest and fair competition.

Due to the additional points that may be earned through CREATIVES and COMPOSURE, a team that wins the most amount of games isn’t necessarily the team that goes home with the Cup.

This tournament calls for all its participants (players, coaches and fans in the stands) to bring out the best version of themselves, a discipline which we are called to live daily.
