Universal Backup Device (UBD)
is a Fibre Channel connected
appliance that appears as a tape
device to your IBM i® (iSeries
®,
AS/400®, System i
®) host.
This means you can replace your
tape drive with UBD and continue to
backup and restore via BRMS, Robot/
Save or other backup software package
without programming changes.
The only difference to the operator is
instead of getting up to retrieve and load
one or more tape cartridges, they can use
the UBD browser-based interface to create
and load a new tape image before backup.
UBD also supports CL commands for
automating the tape image creation and
selection from the host side, if you prefer
to do so.
UBD can be used as a gateway device
to store backups on your NAS, SAN or
any deduplication appliance that supports
CIFS, NFS or iSCSI connections, such as:
GreenBytes®, NetApp
®, Quantum
®,
Exagrid®, etc.

UBDFact: UBD Outperforms Tape Every Time When you compare the facts, UBD outperforms tape in every way. One reason is
that tape provides a “false confidence” that data is 100% backed up and retrievable.
When it comes to tape restores, the failure rate is high (most estimates run from 40-70%);
although the data may have been “backed up”, if it can’t be restored when it is needed
then that backup is totally useless and that could be a disaster. UBD gives you
confidence in your backups and frees you up to focus on other areas of your business.

UBD Synch
Replace physical tape media for offsite & DR backups
UBD Synch is an optional add-on feature for UBD that enables you to automatically
replicate your compressed encrypted UBD tape files to a second offsite UBD server,
or to a file server. Typical compression for IBM SAVLIBs is 5 to 1, or 20% of the
uncompressed file size.
UBD writes each tape image as one or
more files in a folder that you
select. UBD stores your backup tape
images compressed and encrypted on
the local UBD appliance, or its attached storage such as a SAN or NAS.
UBD Synch is set to read that folder, and compare it to a folder on a remote server.
It then transfers those encrypted files to the remote server, replicating your backup.
UBD Synch operates as a scheduled task, and can also be automatically started when
he backup process is completed.
UBD Synch highlights:
