Perspectives on Information Systems
Management Information SystemsChapter 1 Information Systems in Global Business Today
An information system contains information about an organization and its surrounding environment. Three basic activities—input, processing, and output—produce the information organizations need. Feedback is output returned to appropriate people or activities in the organization to evaluate and refine the input. Environmental actors, such as customers, suppliers, competitors, stockholders, and regulatory agencies, interact with the organization and its information systems.

What Is an Information System?
Technology perspective: A set of interrelated components that collect (or retrieve), process, store, and distribute information to support decision making and control in an organization
![Page 9: Information System in Global Business Today](https://reader037.fdocuments.us/reader037/viewer/2022100304/5447acc6b1af9f4a228b4944/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
What is MIS? An information system designed by an
organization to collect, manipulate, and disseminate data or information on a program
Includes hardware, software, people, communications systems, and data
Allows managers to plan, monitor, and evaluate operations and performance of an activity
Designed and used for administrative purposes.
‘In an organization, information is the blood and MIS is the heart’.

• Create new services: eBay has developed the
largest auction trading platform for millions
of individuals and businesses. Competitors
have not been able to imitate its success.
• Differentiate yourself from your competitors:
Amazon has become the largest book retailer
in the United States on the strength of its
huge online inventory and recommender
system. It has no rivals in size and scope.
![Page 18: Information System in Global Business Today](https://reader037.fdocuments.us/reader037/viewer/2022100304/5447acc6b1af9f4a228b4944/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
Customer and supplier intimacy:◦ Serving customers well leads to customers returning,
which raises revenues and profits.◦ Better communication with suppliers lowers costs
![Page 19: Information System in Global Business Today](https://reader037.fdocuments.us/reader037/viewer/2022100304/5447acc6b1af9f4a228b4944/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)

Organizational dimension of information systems
Business organizations are hierarchies consisting of three principal levels: senior management, middle management, and operational management. Information systems serve each of these levels. Scientists and knowledge workers often work with middle management.
Figure 1-6
Levels in a Firm
![Page 25: Information System in Global Business Today](https://reader037.fdocuments.us/reader037/viewer/2022100304/5447acc6b1af9f4a228b4944/html5/thumbnails/25.jpg)
Senior mgmt.- makes long term strategic decisions about product and service
Middle mgmt. – caries out programs and plan of senior mgmt
Knowledge Workers Design products and services Create new knowledge
Engineers, architects, scientists etc.
Operational mgmt.- monitoring daily activities Data Workers
Who processes the organization’s paper work Secretaries, book keepers, clerks
Production or service workers

Management dimension of information systems
◦ Managers set organizational strategy for responding to business challenges
◦ In addition, managers must act creatively: Creation of new products and services Occasionally re-creating the organization
![Page 27: Information System in Global Business Today](https://reader037.fdocuments.us/reader037/viewer/2022100304/5447acc6b1af9f4a228b4944/html5/thumbnails/27.jpg)
Technology dimension of information systems◦ Computer hardware and software
◦ Data management technology
◦ Networking and telecommunications technology Networks, the Internet, intranets and extranets, World
Wide Web
◦ IT infrastructure: provides platform that system is built on
![Page 28: Information System in Global Business Today](https://reader037.fdocuments.us/reader037/viewer/2022100304/5447acc6b1af9f4a228b4944/html5/thumbnails/28.jpg)
◦ Information system is instrument for creating value◦ Investments in information technology will result in
superior returns: Productivity increases Revenue increases Superior long-term strategic positioning
Business perspective on information systems:
![Page 29: Information System in Global Business Today](https://reader037.fdocuments.us/reader037/viewer/2022100304/5447acc6b1af9f4a228b4944/html5/thumbnails/29.jpg)
Business information value chain◦ Raw data acquired and transformed through stages
that add value to that information◦ Value of information system determined in part by
extent to which it leads to better decisions, greater efficiency, and higher profits
Business perspective: Calls attention to organizational and managerial nature of information systems
