PREPARING YOUR APPLICATION

Your application is your introduction to those who will form the selection panel, and the information you provide will be the basis on which the panel will assess your suitability for the position. To ensure the panel can accurately assess your suitability when shortlisting applicants, it is important to include the following:

1. Cover Letter Cover letters are a great way to introduce yourself and show how you will be a good fit for both the advertised position and for Moyne Shire. You can do this by keeping your letter relevant to the position and focus on the requirements for the role. 2. Current Resume A current resume detailing your employment history, educational history and qualifications, skills and experience must be provided. Please ensure your resume includes up-to-date contact details for yourself, including a telephone number, so that you may be contacted if required.

3. Statement Addressing the Key Selection Criteria The Key Selection Criteria for each position details the knowledge, skills, experience and qualities that have been deemed essential for applicants to possess to be successful in the position. All applications received are assessed against the Key Selection Criteria when shortlisting is conducted, so it is essential that you address the criteria in your application.

4. Current Referees The names, position titles and contact telephone numbers of at least three professional (work-related) referees must be provided. These should include a direct supervisor and/or a current employer.

SHORTLISTING AND NOTIFICATIONS

All applications will be shortlisted by a selection panel of no less than two individuals once applications close. Candidates are assessed against the Key Selection Criteria for the position and against the other applications received, which includes consideration of the applicant’s fit with our culture, the team, and the duties to be performed. Although timeframes may vary, shortlisting is usually completed within two-weeks of the closing date. You will either receive a phone call inviting you to an interview for the position, or written notification that you have been unsuccessful, within four-weeks of the closing date.

INTERVIEWS

All selected applicants will be contacted via phone call to and offered an invitation to interview for the position once shortlisting is completed, and will receive written confirmation of the interview time, date and location once agreed. Where practical, all interviews will be conducted face-to-face with a selection panel of three individuals. Candidates will be asked a selection of pre-determined interview questions and may also be required to complete a practical test, element or presentation relating to the position or the Key Selection Criteria for the role. Applicants selected for interview who have any special requirements or require assistance for the interview process are asked to inform the Human Resources Department so that we may make the necessary arrangements.

EMPLOYMENT DETAILS Plant Operator – Compactor / Town Facilities

STATUS: Permanent Full Time LOCATION: Koroit Depot

AWARD: Victoria Local Authorities Award 2001 and the Moyne Shire Enterprise

Agreement CLASSIFICATION: Band 2 SALARY: $54,490 - $55,788 per annum (inclusive of relevant industry allowances) PAYMENT DETAILS: Salary is paid on a fortnightly basis into a nominated bank account by

direct bank deposit. SUPERANNUATION: Council contributes 9.5% of salary and employees can choose to

contribute a percentage or set amount of their salary into the Fund. Employees may elect to be a member of either VISION, Australian Super or HESTA.

HOURS: Due to the nature of the work it is essential that applicants are flexible in being able to work when required. Normal hours of duty are 7:30am to 4:30pm each day.

This position is worked on a 9 day fortnight. Due to the nature of the work it is essential that applicants are flexible in

being able to work when required, there may be a need to work overtime and weekends / out of hours at peak times.

ANNUAL LEAVE: 4 weeks annual leave per annum SICK LEAVE: 12 days sick leave per annum RDO: The Plant Operator – Compactor / Town Facilities will be entitled to one

1. POSITION OBJECTIVE

To operate various plant and equipment in accordance with specified standards, to assist in Council’s delivery of services. Works will predominantly involve the driving of Council’s Garbage Compactor, assisting with bin collection and completing Council’s road and street and facilities cleaning program in accordance with direction given by the relevant Supervisor.

2. KEY POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

As directed by the Works Supervisor:

Carry out maintenance and garbage collection on Council’s roads, streets and parks using techniques, equipment, tools and materials as appropriate and as directed by the Works Supervisor.

Prepare vehicle and plant for daily work and collect necessary materials for tasks. Operate all plant in a safe and effective manner. Complete daily plant checklists and ensure that the truck and compactor are operative

and report any anomalies to the mechanics. Ensure that the vehicle is kept in a clean and tidy condition at all times. Complete a daily timesheet and other documentation as required. This will include

estimates of volumes of waste in each bin when emptied. Cleaning of rubbish bins and bin surrounds as required or when instructed by supervisor. Perform minor repairs to bins such as bin lids, and wheels when required or when

instructed by supervisor. Identify opportunities for improvements in the garbage collection rounds for efficiency and

to be flexible with collections as may be required from time to time during peak periods. Perform any other duties encountered, including manual tasks within their capabilities, as

allocated from time to time by the supervisor. Report to supervisor any problems encountered in carrying out duties and any outstanding

defects not able to be repaired. Attend to after-hours work as required.

3. ORGANISATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS

Responsible to: Works Supervisor. Supervises: Nil. Internal Liaison: All engineering department members and other department managers and staff as required.

External Liaison: Customers, clients and general public.

5. ACCOUNTABILITY AND EXTENT OF AUTHORITY

Responsible for operation of compactor equipment as directed in accordance with

established standards. Responsible to the Works Supervisor or their representative for the execution of work

directions. To be able to execute works to the required standards under routine supervision. Ability to prioritise works tasks. Responsible for the safe operation and daily maintenance of plant. Responsible for the placement of appropriate warning devices on the job. May be required to provide some explanations to other employees or the public.

6. JUDGEMENT AND DECISION MAKING

Resolve minor problems; refer to any non-routine issues to the Works Supervisor. Identify when bins need replacing or maintenance.

7. MANAGEMENT SKILLS

Ability to program works on a daily basis to ensure effective use of plant.

Ability to work to time schedules in the completion of the tasks.

8. SPECIALIST SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE

Operation of compactor equipment, general hand tools associated with works under the maintenance program.

Basic mechanical knowledge.

Working knowledge of maintenance techniques especially those relating to a compactor unit.

9. INTERPERSONAL SKILLS

The ability to communicate effectively with other staff and clients, as required. Ability to resolve minor problems.

10. QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

Basic written and verbal skills. Experience in compactor operation and truck operation an advantage Current driver licence with medium-rigid endorsement.

KEY SELECTION CRITERIA Plant Operator – Compactor / Town Facilities

The following key selection criteria will be used as a tool to assist in the selection of the most suitable applicant. The criteria are not listed in any order of importance and the list is not exhaustive.

Qualifications 1. Essential – Current Drivers licence with medium rigid

endorsement

Experience 1. Essential – Experience in compactor operation 2. Desirable – Experience in Truck operation

KSC 1 Basic written and verbal skills

KSC 2 Experience in the safe operation of plant and equipment and knowledge of the OHS requirements to maintain a safe working environment

KSC 3 Ability to take direction and work unsupervised
