Program Goals

In addition to meeting the requirements for completion of Grade 10, the goals of the TREK Program are:

• to introduce each student to a variety of outdoor activities; • to provide instruction in the safe and proper means of participating in these activities; • to help students develop a greater understanding of the natural world; • to provide positive personal growth experiences that help students develop beneficial

character traits.

Program Objectives

Outdoor Activities

The TREK Program introduces each student to a variety of outdoor activities including:

þ hiking and backpacking þ ocean kayaking þ canoeing þ rock climbing þ cycle touring þ back-country (telemark) skiing þ cross-country (Nordic) skiing þ essential outdoor skills (minimum impact camping, outdoor cooking, first aid, map & compass,

weather interpretation, snow shelter construction, avalanche assessment & risk reduction)

We provide instruction in the safe and proper means of participating in each of these activities, to give students the basis for a lifetime of outdoor adventure.

Education for Sustainability

Education about the natural environment and sustainability are fundamental components of the TREK Program. We believe that students should understand how the natural environment has an impact on their daily lives, and in turn, what kind of impact their daily lives have on the environment. We provide students with opportunities to learn about the functioning of natural systems, identify their beliefs and opinions, consider a range of views, and ultimately make informed and responsible decisions.

Character Development

The underlying purpose of the TREK Program is to provide experiences that help students learn about themselves. We create a physical and social environment that supports the development of positive character traits such as: respect, responsibility, consideration, independence, self-confidence, openness to new experiences, helpfulness, self-discipline, enthusiasm, courage, leadership, critical thinking, interpersonal skills, creativity, and concern for health, safety, & fitness.

Our aim is to enable students to choose wisely from among the choices, initiate action, turn dreams into reality and take personal responsibility for who they become.

Program Structure

Each year 112 students are admitted into the TREK Program. Students participate in two half-year terms, based at Prince of Wales Secondary School. Students must transfer to P.W. for the year. In the first term (Sept. – Jan.), 56 students will be “off-TREK”, while the other 56 will “on-TREK”. In the second term (Feb. – June), the student groups switch, thus completing both portions of the program.

During the on-TREK term, students will be involved in a combination of outdoor activities, field studies, trips, and classroom-based academics including:

• English 10 (½ of the course) • Social Studies 10 (½ of the course) • Planning 10 (½ of the course) • P.E. 10 (complete course) • Outdoor Education (complete course)

In the on-TREK term, approximately ½ of our time (47 days) will be based in the field (on trips of between 1 and 7 days), and ½ of our time will be based at Prince of Wales Secondary.

In the off-TREK term, students complete their academic curriculum including: • English 10 (½ of the course) • Social Studies 10 (½ of the course) • Planning 10 (½ of the course) • Math 10 (complete course) • Science 10 (complete course) • French 10 for those who have completed French 9;

or Spanish 10 for those who have completed Spanish 9; or French Immersion 10 (1/2 course) for those who are in French Immersion or the Programme Cadre de Francais at Kits; or a Correspondence Course if none of the above apply

At the end of the year, all successful TREK students will have met the requirements for completion of Grade 10.

Teaching Staff

The staff team at TREK is an important factor in helping students obtain the potential benefits of this program.

On-TREK Staff have teaching backgrounds in English, Science, Social Studies, P.E. and Outdoor Education. A team teaching approach is utilized for on-TREK subjects.

Each member of our co-ed teaching team is certified by the B.C. College of Teachers.

On-TREK teaching staff have safely taught and guided thousands of students in locations throughout British Columbia. In addition to specific areas of training and expertise (such as ocean kayaking, rock climbing, and back-country skiing), on-TREK staff members are trained in wilderness first aid and incident response procedures.

Who Should Apply?

• Any Grade 9 student who lives within the Vancouver School District. Note: students from other districts are welcome to apply, but students who have applied from within the Vancouver School District will be given first priority.

• Any student looking for adventure and challenge in their Grade 10 year. • Applicants must be interested in pursuing the goals of the program (outdoor activities,

education for sustainability, and character development). • Applicants must be committed to consistently trying their best in the academic, physical

and social aspects of the program.

Minimum Requirements

• Applicants must pass all Grade 8 and 9 core subjects (English, Social Studies, Math, Science, P.E., and a second language), and maintain a minimum C+ average across the six subjects (this requirement is in place because TREK involves an intensified academic curriculum, in order to make time for outdoor adventures).

• Applicants must meet the Grade 9 standard for physical fitness (this requirement is in place because physical exersion is part of all TREK trips, and a lack of physical fitness can place an individual or an entire group at risk). As a measure, applicants must be able to run 2.4 km (6 times around a standard track) in under 14 minutes.

• Applicants must be committed to creating a social environment that supports respect and responsibility. This requirement is in place because a lack of respect or responsibility can create safety concerns during TREK trips (students must be able to listen and respond to all reasonable instructions). As a measure of respect and responsibility, students must receive generally positive comments on two confidential Letters of Reference (one from a secondary school teacher, and one from an adult member of the community).

Students Should Not Apply…

• Students should not apply only because their parents have asked them to; students should certainly apply if their parents have asked them to and they also want to apply.

• Students should not apply only because their friends are applying; students should apply if their friends are applying and they want to apply as an individual.

• Students should not apply if they think it will be “a year off” – TREK students are required to accomplish more in a year than regular Grade 10 students.

Trips

In general, during the on-TREK term students participate in the following trips. • 7-day trip (possible travel modes include hiking, canoeing, or ocean kayaking) • 4-day trip (possible travel modes include hiking, canoeing, kayaking or cycle touring) • 4-day Lodge based skiing (Nordic and telemark) trip at Manning Provincial Park • 3-day winter camping trip • plus many day trips

Trip teams are assigned once trip destinations and travel modes have been described to students, and students have had a chance to state their preferred (not guaranteed) trip.

Safety Considerations

Safety is our first priority. We make every effort to create safe experiences through careful preparation, quality staffing, and a safety commitment from students.

Prior to each trip, teaching staff prepare detailed incident response systems (including emergency evacuation procedures) for each specific area and mode of travel. Our excellent safety record speaks to our commitment to carefully balance adventure and appropriate (minimal) risk.

Guides (experts in their field) are hired to augment the teaching staff on all overnight trips and some day trips. Each overnight trip consists of 14 students accompanied by 2 or 3 staff members (at least one female and one male). The number of staff members depends on the type of trip.

Students also play a vital role in creating a safe program. In an effort to make the term as safe as possible, the staff team will instruct students on the safety precautions and correct procedures of each activity. Students are asked to follow all reasonable instructions and directions of the staff, and to stay with the group at all times unless notice has been given to one of the program staff.

Policies

The TREK Program has policies regarding attendance, absences, punctuality, assignments, physical fitness, preparedness, transportation, and equipment. These policies are outlined in the TREK Student Handbook (distributed and reviewed with students at the beginning of the on-TREK term). During the application process we would like to highlight our policies regarding smoking, drugs and alcohol.

• The TREK program encourages healthy living. Therefore, cigarette smoking, alcohol consumption and the use of non-prescription drugs are not permitted at any time during classes, program activities and trips.

• Alcohol consumption or the use of non-prescription drugs on any activity related to TREK may result in suspension or immediate expulsion from the program.

Question & Answer Do I need previous camping/outdoor experience? No. The program staff will teach you the fundamentals of wilderness camping and travel. You must have an interest in trying or pursuing outdoor activities. Do I need to know how to swim? No, but you must be able to remain calm while floating in water over your head (wearing a PFD/lifejacket). What is the size of trip groups? 14 students accompanied by 2 or 3 staff members (at least one female and one male). The number of staff members depends on the type of trip. How do the trip meals work? Menu planning, food purchasing and meal preparation is done in small groups (2 or 3 students) with the guidance of program staff. How physically fit do I need to be? The TREK Program is a physically demanding experience but, anyone who enjoys moderate exercise will find the activities well within their physical ability. Can I choose my on-TREK and off-TREK terms? No. But, successful applicants will be asked to state their preferred term placement. This preference is not guaranteed – due to scheduling constraints, some students will be placed in a term that is not their preferred choice. Is it better to complete the intensified academic term first, or the wilderness trips term first? It really doesn’t matter – a case can be made for the advantages of either sequence. I currently have a skills block in place of a language course. Can I still apply to TREK and will I be able to enroll in a skills block while in TREK? Yes you can apply, but in general we are unable to offer students a skills block. Our first priority is to look after the educational needs of each student and for this reason each case will be looked at on an individual basis. What if I’ve already completed a Grade 10 subject? All students in Grade 10 are required to be enrolled in a full load of courses (a Ministry of Education requirement). Students who have previously-completed courses must top-up their course load with a correspondence course. TREK students cannot take “regular” courses at Prince of Wales Secondary because the TREK timetable differs from the P.W. timetable.

Page 12: Information package for applicants (2016 2017 school year)

TREK Program - Information Package for Applicants (2015-2016 School Year) page 12 of 13

Should I complete Grade 10 courses during the summer before TREK? We highly discourage students from enrolling in a summer school course that is a regular part of their TREK year (Planning 10, Socials 10, Math 10, Science 10, French 10, English 10). In addition to adding complexity to an already challenging schedule, we find the community development that takes place during all academic courses critical for the success of students’ TREK year. Should students enter their ON-TREK TERM having completed a course, they will still need to attend the class and complete the homework while ON-TREK. Are former TREK students at an academic disadvantage in Grade 11 or 12? No. Although we do not formally track students, informal evidence (principals lists, scholarships, university entrances) strongly suggests that TREK students do as well, or better than, their peers in Grades 11 & 12 (who did not complete the TREK Program). If anything, the program exposes TREK students to skills (self-discipline, self-confidence, independence, critical thinking) that serve them well in the intensity of Grade 11 & 12 academics. Do TREK students write Grade 10 Final Exams? Yes. The Mathematics 10 and Science 10 exams are written at the end of your off-TREK term. All TREK students write the English 10 exam in June. I’m a French Immersion student interested in applying to TREK. How will I fulfill the 24 FI credits required to graduate with a bilingual dogwood?

French immersion students who do the grade 10 Trek program miss out on four full year FI courses in French (including French immersion language arts). FI grade 11 has only two full year courses in French. FI grade 12 has only one full year course in French. Each of these courses has French conversational elements. French immersion – Trek students are welcomed back into the French immersion program in grade 11. French immersion courses will continue to appear on their transcript and this information will be available to universities and employers. Due to missing the grade 10 French immersion course work they will not graduate with the bilingual dogwood diploma. However, they do have the option of completing alternative work to qualify for the bilingual dogwood.

It is recommended that immersion students speak to their home school about the requirements to graduate with a bilingual dogwood as each school has specific expectations with students returning from TREK. If I’m transferring from another school for the year, can I play on a sports team while I’m at P.W.? Maybe. B.C. School Sports is the governing body with regard to sport competition in B.C. Schools. Students transferring from other schools for the year must abide by B.C. School Sports Eligibility Policies. These include: 1) If you compete in any registered B.C. School Sport for Prince of Wales Secondary School

during your TREK year (Grade 10) you must sit out for a year of eligibility (Grade 11) when you return to your home school.

Page 13: Information package for applicants (2016 2017 school year)

TREK Program - Information Package for Applicants (2015-2016 School Year) page 13 of 13

2) While at TREK you may continue to compete for your home school (with permission of the school) and not lose your eligibility for your Grade 11 year.

For more detailed information please consult the complete eligibility document at www.bcschoolsports.ca/pages/policy/section_6 Should I call TREK if I don’t get accepted? No. Due to the large number of applications that we receive, we are only able to accept 112 students. A subsequent draw will be performed if any applications are withdrawn prior to commencement of the program. If this occurs, the successful applicant will be notified immediately.
