Beautiful EnvironmentNorth Cyprus offers the perfect escape from the stresses of everyday life. Enjoying more than half of the island’s 480 miles of spectacular coastline, North Cyprus boasts a myriad of picturesque coves and beautiful broad bays backed by histo-rical harbors and citrus groves. Whether it ’s swimming on secluded stretches of sandy beaches in the Karpaz, enjoying the excellent facilities and activities of private hotel beaches or scuba-diving in one of the region’s spectacular dive sites, there’s a great choice for beach-lovers. Indeed, it ’s no surprise that according to legend, Julius Caesar gave the island to Cleopatra as a token of his love.

World-famous Golden BeachFurther along the East coast, at the foot of the Karpaz peninsula in the Yeni Iskele district is Boğaz, a sleepy fishing village in an utterly tran-quil location. Here, you are within easy reach of the Karpaz itself which boasts some of the island’s most deserted sandy beaches. The highlight of this area is the Golden Beach, one of the world’s finest and longest beaches, with magnificent sands that stretch for more than 3 kilometres. The beach is fringed with magnificent sand dunes and it is here that turtles roam and make their nurseries.

Art and CultureYou are embarking on a major undertaking in cross-cultural living. With this in mind, you should try to learn as much as you can about your own culture as well as about Turkish Cypriot culture before you land in North Cyprus . While Turkish

Cypriots are descendents of mainland Turks, they have their own distinct culture. The lear-ning process will not be easy; it will proceed in several stages over a period of months, and it may continue in the form of reverse culture shock when you return home. If it is at all successful, you will learn as much about yourself and your culture as you will about Cypriots and their culture.

There are three basic reactions a visitor to a new culture may feel; withdrawal and retreat to the old and familiar way of his/her own culture coupled with denial of the value of the new; modification of thought and behavior through integration of a few

admired elements in the new culture with the old; or rejection of the old and complete replacement by the new (being “more Roman than the Romans”). It is common for new arrivals to go through a period of culture shock. Culture shock is the sometimes angu-ishing period of reaction and adjustment to a new, unfamiliar environment, though normally the bad parts don’t last too long. In any case its important to know that you don’t have to like everything, and you don’t have to do everything the way the host nationals do it. When you find the happy medium between acting just like you did at home and acting just like an Cypriot, Cypriots will be very tole-rant because you will be showing more respect for their culture than they are used to from foreigners.

Remember, the International Center is here to help you adjust to your new surroundings. Just drop by or give us a call.

WildlifeNorth Cyprus is still relatively undiscovered so wildlife flourishes, with some 250 species of birds touching down on the island every year on the passage from East to West. There is also an abundance of lizards, wild donkeys and butterf-lies, including species which are unique to the region, such as the strangely-shaped festoon and Cleopatra butterflies adorned with the colors of sunshine. They are all part of a rich natural heri-tage on an island of contrasts that spans from the top of Mount Selvili’s 3000 feet to the gentle slopes of the coastal waters, where the famous loggerhead turtles come ashore to lay their eggs. The warm climate in North Cyprus also means visitors can enjoy beautiful flowers all year-round, making it a veritable botanic haven. In the autumn and winter golden-yellow oleanders swathe the hills, whilst multi-colored anemones and crocuses appear before Christmas. But it is in late winter and spring that the island blooms into a rhapsody of color with the orchid family and cherry-red poppies taking centre stage.

Religion The majority of the Turkish Cypriots are Muslim and although very few regularly attend mosque services or wear religious attire, most celebrate religious festivals.

Family Life For Turkish Cypriots, family life is of ultimate importance and therefore a great amount of their free time is spent at family gatherings, barbeques and weddings. All towns and even some villages hold festivals many of which are in the early summer.

Cuisine The culture of a place is always reflected in its kitchen, and Northern Cyprus is no exception. North Cyprus cuisine embodies influences from north (South-Eastern Europe), east (Western Asia), south (northern Africa), and west (Mediterranean) resulting in excellent choices from pasta dishes made of dough, raw and cooked vegetables, diffe-rent types of seafood and meat kebabs, and finally mouth-watering deserts. Eating out is popular amongst locals and the choice of cuisine reflects this. In larger towns, a range of international resta-urants also offer dishes from around the world.

Find, Manage or Form Your Own ClubThe importance of social and cultural activities in preparing students for real life and strengthening their personal skills cannot be questioned. Social/cultural activities not only help students to iden-tify themselves with the university, but also assist students to develop themselves in a desired field and also improve skills such as organizational, presenta-tion, leadership and interpersonal communication.Student life within the University is rich and a wide range of activities are present to tailor all

talents and interests. As social and cultural acti-vities are of paramount importance, the Univer-sity encourages all extra-curricular activities that are both in line with the educational objectives of the institution and meet the needs of the students. The student clubs within our university are of great significance since they are the main conduc-tors of extra-curricular activities. The social life within the university is gradually prospering with the increase in student clubs and the invol-vement of students within these clubs. Detailed information about the objectives and activities of each club can be reached by clicking on the individual club page links provided on the right. The student clubs are open to the participation of all students. Students can become members of any club that they desire and can take participative roles within the activities of these clubs. Moreover,

their involvement will in turn further their skills and talents within the areas of their interest. Club members also benefit from the facilities provided to them on behalf of the Social and Cultural Acti-vities Directorate, i.e. music studio, conference hall, practice/training venues, meeting rooms, etc.Students who would like to be a member of a club can download and fill the club membership form from the link provided below. Upon completing the form students are kindly asked to submit their forms to the Student Clubs Unit. In order to

have active roles in clubs’ activities, students are suggested to become members to a maximum of two clubs.
