Welcome Back to your final half term! No doubt you all enjoyed your holiday and made the most of your break. We are now in the final stretch before the end of the year...and what a half term we have planned for you. Year 11 Summer Ball (final goodbye for some), Year 10 Mock Interviews (have you submitted your CV yet?) Year 7 C3 visits, Training Day (yes another day off!), Year 8 Multi-match against St Mary’s (come on team IGS!), Languages Festival, Learning Community and Sports Day, Anne Hindle Golf Tournament (fore!), Year 7 and 8 tennis morning at ILTSC, Challenge and Celebration Week , Super Tutor Group (who’s it going to be this year?) and Celebration Assemblies, all to top off your school year...phew. IMPS Feedback Do you remember visiting Airedale Hospital in Year 6 at Primary School? The team of people who organise the IMPS (Injury Minimization Programme for Schools) visits are keen to hear from any student who has used any of the skills they learnt on their visit performing Fist Aid, or if you have decided to pursue a career in medicine because of the visits. Congratulations to Dominic Greenwood (10VEB) who has successfully completed his British Sub-Aqua Club Ocean Diver qualification during half-term at Capernwray Diving Centre near Carnforth. Dominic is continuing his family tradition, joining both his Mum and Dad as a qualified divers.

Well done to our Year 7 girls’ rounders team who were in action this week. They played Holy Family and South Craven School on Monday and were triumphant in both matches. The scores on the doors were:

IGS 14—7 Holy Family IGS 7—1 South Craven.

Well done to Lucy Williamson (11PO), pictured left in the photo, who representing local running club Ilkley Harriers, competed in the West Nab Race on 31st May; Lucy came 2nd in the U18 girls’ race.

Congratulations to our U15 and U13 girls’ tennis team who played in the AEGON match against Holmfirth on Tuesday. They played incredibly well, with a fantastic standard of play in the U15 category in particular. The U13 girls drew with Holmfirth, but actually won on games, however, a complicated ruling system meant we had to play a tie break shoot out which unfortunately we lost.

Congratulations to Matthew Hall (8CW/SF) and Laura King (10FV) who along with Matthew's dad beat 40 other teams to win the Mixed Adhoc class at the British Relay Orienteering Championships in Northumberland.

The three runners tackled long, medium or short legs totalling 10.4 kilometres. All three of them kept cool heads to earn their team, Airienteers, first place on the Sunday.

The terrain comprised of lightning-fast grassland with complex old mineral workings, making for tough navigation under the pressure of head-to-head relay racing.

Well done to both Matthew and Laura!

Well done to our Year 7 cricketers who played Ermysted’s on Wednesday. The game had to be played indoors due to the bad weather. IGS batted first finishing 224 for 5 and bowled Ermysted’s out for 183. An outstanding performance from the team, in particular Matthew Revis (7SP) who finished 144 not out!

Congratulations to all our students who entered the 108th Wharfedale Festival of Performing Arts which attracted a high standard of entries from talented performers across Wharfedale, as well as further afield in West and North Yorkshire. The competition was held between May 10th and 17th for competitive speech, drama and music classes. A Celebration Concert took place at Christchurch, The Grove, Ilkley, on Wednesday (June 4) and included the presentation of the major trophies.

You are spoilt for choice...double macaroni cheese, Dutch apple pudding, tacos and Eton mess all in one week!

Cutlery Amnesty Our school kitchen has bought additional knives and forks this year, 1000 forks and 500 knives to be exact, and still it is not enough to ensure there is enough cutlery at lunchtime. This is due to a substantial amount of cutlery being damaged, binned by mistake or removed from the Dining Hall. Please, respect the knives and forks, don’t purposefully damage them and ensure they are returned with your dirty plates after you have finished eating.

Otley Lions have decided to launch a story writing competition, open to all children and young people, attending local schools. The aim of the competition is to encourage the participants to stretch their imagination as they try their hand at creating works of fiction: it’s also hoped they have a lot of fun!

The theme for the stories will change each time. Competitors will be given a choice of themes. There will always be two themes offered for each age group. For June 2014, the themes are : Key Stage 1 opening sentence; a. As the clock struck midnight, the first of the toys to come to life was Leo, the cuddly soft lion. b. A letter to a fairy tale character. Key Stage 2 opening sentence; a. The ride suddenly stopped. b. The Storm. Key Stage 3 opening sentence; a. Had I made a huge mistake... b. Why was he laughing? Key Stage 4 opening sentence; a. Tension mounted as I realised how much hung on my next move. b. Farewell... and arrival. Key Stages 3 and 4 may also produce any piece of ‘Flash- fiction’ - a story of six words. There will be a separate prize of £20 book token for the best flash fiction entry.

There are four levels of competition related to educational Key Stages – Key Stage 1 (5-7 years) Key Stage 2 (7-11 years) Key Stage 3 (11-14 years) and Key Stage 4 (14-16 years). Entries may be hand-written or word-processed and should be delivered as hard copies to the Lions’ Bookshop in Mercury Row or delivered as an email attachment to the Lions’ Publicity Officer at pg@mcatkins.co.uk. Entrants won’t be required to complete an application form. All that is needed is a cover sheet indicating name, address, telephone number, email address (if possible), date of birth and school attended. Competitions will be held twice a year with the competitions closing and the winners being announced in the months of January and June. The first competition will therefore have a closing date of June 1st, 2014. The prize for all categories will be a £20 book token; also, the winning stories will be displayed in the Lions’ Bookshop and posted on their website with the winners’ names announced in the ‘Wharfedale Observer.’ For the Key Stages 1 and 2 the word-limit shall be 500 words and for Key Stages 3 and 4 it is 750 words. The stories will be judged by a group of Otley Lions applying the criteria of originality, plot, characters, narrative, dialogue, style and linguistic accuracy.

Le Tour de France Yorkshire: le Grand Départ Get ready for the Tour de France coming to Yorkshire with MFL 's quiz. There are 10 multiple choice questions outside the Language rooms. Hand your answers in on a piece of paper with your name and tutor group to an MFL teacher. All correct answers will go into a draw for the chance to win an iTunes voucher...and of course the quiz is in French so bonne chance!

You can now sign up for auditions for the Year 7 only production. You must sign up for all 3 auditions: dance, singing and drama.

There is a limit of 50 places at each audition. If lots more people want to be involved then further auditions will be arranged at a later date.

All of the auditions will be group based. You will not need to perform anything on your own.

Maya Angelou

April 4, 1928 – May 28, 2014

Maya Angelou was an American author and poet. She published seven autobiographies, three books of essays, and several books of poetry, and was credited with a list of plays, movies, and television shows spanning more than 50 years. She received dozens of awards and over 30 honorary doctoral degrees.

Her series of seven autobiographies, which focus on her childhood and early adult experiences, started with I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings (1969) which tells of her life up to the age of seventeen and brought her international recognition and acclaim.

Angelou became a poet and writer after a series of occupations as a young adult. She was an actor, writer, director, and producer of plays, movies, and public television programs. She was active in the Civil Rights movement, and worked with Martin Luther King Junior and Malcolm X. Beginning in the 1990s an in 1993, Angelou recited her poem ‘On the Pulse of Morning’ at President Bill Clinton's inauguration, making her the first poet to make an inaugural recitation since Robert Frost at John F. Kennedy's inauguration in 1961.

With the publication of ‘I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings’, Angelou publicly discussed aspects of her personal life which touched a chord with many readers. She was respected as a writer, poet and spokesperson of black people and women.

Tributes to Angelou and condolences were paid by artists, entertainers, and world leaders, including Barack Obama, whose sister had been named after Angelou, and Bill Clinton.

World Environment Day is the United Nations’ principal vehicle for encouraging worldwide awareness and action for the environment. Over the years it has grown to be a broad, global platform for public outreach that is widely celebrated by over 100 countries.

It also serves as the ‘people’s day’ for doing something positive for the environment. This year the theme will support the UN designation of 2014 as the ‘International Year of Small Island Developing States’ (SIDS) and will adopt the broader context of climate change. The objectives are to help build momentum towards the Third International Conference on SIDS in September and encourage a greater understanding of the importance of SIDS and of the urgency to help protect the islands in the face of growing risks and vulnerabilities, particularly as a result of climate change.

People around the world depend on a healthy, clean ocean in order to survive and thrive. World Oceans Day is the official UN-designated international day of ocean celebration. On June 8th each year, we are encouraged to celebrate the ocean, its importance in our lives, and how we can protect it.

World Oceans Day aims to help make a difference in everyone’s life, community, and world by taking action to protect our ocean—for present and future generations. The 2013/2014 two-year theme is

“Together we have the power to protect the ocean!”
