Influences and Intentions

When I looked at the lyrics of the song, and listened to it a few times, I felt it needed a

calm video, and I was reminded of Gabrielle

Aplin’s ‘Home’ video, and could imagine a similar,

narrative-light journey fitting with the style of music

here.

When looking at ‘Ho Hey’ and ‘Little Lion Man’, I was reminded

of the mentions of light/dark in the song’s lyrics, and particularly

liked the stark locations and use of minimal lighting. This

influenced me into thinking something similar could be used

in my music video – something simple and minimal to match the

simple lyrics and light tone.

The countryside/journey idea really appealed to me from

numerous videos, as it fits the genre of my song. I especially

admired the shots where the sun shone onto the camera and

created a warm, soft glow. However, it seemed initially to be too difficult to combine with

the sophisticated look of the Mumford & Sons and

Lumineers’ videos.

Re-listening to the track helped to piece together the concept for the music video and refine how I thought about it, as I realised the

titular ‘Silver Light’ could be a character or a metaphor that

leads the singer out of the dark, shadowy and bare location seen in ½ of my research, out into the bright natural landscape seen in

the other 1/2

Other influences were random shots, usually showing things from different, more unusual

angles, such as through shadows, blurred shots and

mirrors. These make for more interesting videos that are more

varied and unique, and I’d like to try the same technique of

looking at things differently in my video – such as rarely shooting the singer’s face

initially, but only showing partial or obscured views, silhouettes

or shadows that create mystery before the reveal.
