Literature review
“Effects of Foreign Media on Youth” has remained a vital topic for discussion in the past and present. Everyone is aware of its implications.
Exposure from foreign media is a root cause of many illnesses which include: violence ranging from physical to drug usage, slang language.
Literature Review (continued) Previous research was mostly done on effects of violence
on children but in recent years researchers are studying the effects of violence in television shows, movies or videos on social networking sites and how they could mitigate these effects. Violence in youth ranges from physical aggression to other forms of higher aggression.
Modern studies have also focused on the impact of media violence on aggressive thinking, beliefs and attitudes.
Cross-sectional surveys over the past 40 years have consistently provided evidence that the current physical aggression, verbal aggression, and aggressive thoughts of young people are correlated with the amount of television and film violence they regularly watch (see reviews by Chaffee, 1972; Comstock,1980; Eysenck & Nias, 1978; Huesmann & Miller, 1994).
Kubrin examined 130 platinum albums with 430 songs released from 1992 to 2002 using Anderson's conceptualization of 'the street code' and found that violence was a central theme of the lyrics along with wealth, violent retaliation, nihilism, and objectification of women. (Kubrin, C .E.2005).
