DEAR COLLEGUES

I am delighted to invite you to the 28th International Seminar of “Union International des Architectes – Public Health Group (UIA-PHG) that will be held in Florence from 23-26 June, 2008.Every year, PHG International Seminar provides its members, a community coming from 46 different countries, the opportunity to share their health planning experiences, to debate and gain the insights of academics and profes-sionals involved in the design and management of health care facilities. I am much honored to be able to host the 28th Annual Seminar in the city of Florence.In order to make the most of this unique event, the Seminar will take place in different venues so that delegates will have a chance to visit the main areas of Florence and its world-class buildings.The “Aula Magna” (Great Hall) of the University Chancellery Building, nearby Piazza SS. Annunziata, in the very heart of the historical centre, is one of our Seminar venues. In 1419 the Guild of “Arte della Seta” commissioned Filippo Brunelleschi to design the “Spedale degli Innocenti”, the fi rst orphanage in Europe and one of the fi nest examples of Renaissance architecture. The importance of this healthcare institution is documented in the many papers and artworks kept in the Spedale Museum to be found in the Hall above Brunelleschi’s loggia. The new Meyer children’s hospital has received much acclaim in Italy and has been considered a center of excellence’ and a high-profi le project for Europe too. The building contains many innovative solutions: its technology, interior design and the functionality of its different departments make Meyer one of the fi rst sustainable hospital in Italy.High technology and environmental awareness inspire the project that makes the most effective contribution possi-ble towards energy saving and resource conservation; so much so that, in the year 2000, the European Community granted it funds to implement some of its innovative features. I would like to thank the Meyer Children’s Hospital and the Meyer Foundation for giving hospitality to our Seminar there.We are looking forward to your participation,

Cari colleghi:Sono lieto di invitarvi al 28° Seminario Internazionale della Union Internationale des Architectes – Pu-blic Health Group (UIA-PHG) che si terrà dal 23 al 26 giugno 2008 a Firenze. Come ogni anno il PHG organizza un seminario affi nché i suoi membri, provenienti da 46 diversi Paesi nel mondo, possano incontrarsi per condividere le loro esperienze in tema di progettazione sanitaria e confrontarsi “all’ester-no” con esponenti appartenenti sia al mondo accademico sia al mondo delle professioni relative alla progettazione e alla gestione di strutture sanitarie. Sono onorato di accogliere la 28esima edizione del seminario nella città di Firenze.Ho scelto di svolgere i lavori del seminario in luoghi diversi della città con l’intento di arricchire la vostra partecipazione con l’opportunità di visitare edifi ci e zone della città di Firenze di grande rilevanza. L’Aula Magna del Rettorato dell’Università degli Studi di Firenze, uno dei luoghi del seminario, è situata nel centro storico di Firenze, proprio alle spalle di Piazza SS. Annunziata. Qui nel 1419 Filippo Brunelleschi progettò e realizzò, per volontà dell’Arte della Seta, lo Spedale degli Innocenti, il primo orfanotrofi o d’Eu-ropa e una delle prime architetture rinascimentali. L’importanza di questo istituto nel campo della storia della sanità e dell’arte è testimoniato da un importante archivio e dalle opere custodite nel Museo dello Spedale nel salone sovrastante il loggiato brunelleschiano. Il nuovo ospedale pediatrico A. Meyer è una struttura di eccellenza di livello europeo, riconosciuto di rilevanza nazionale nel contesto italiano. L’edifi cio ha molti elementi di interesse per le soluzioni tecno-logiche, di design degli interni nonchè per l’impianto funzionale dei reparti. Alta Tecnologia e Sensibilità Ambientale hanno guidato il progetto che, nel 2000, ha ricevuto l’accredito di fondi della Comunità Euro-pea per la qualità della sua tecnologia rivolta alla salvaguardia delle risorse e del risparmio energetico. Colgo l’occasione per ringraziare l’Azienda Ospedaliera Meyer e la Fondazione Meyer per mettere a disposizione alcuni pregevoli spazi dell’ospedale per lo svolgimento del seminario.Con i miei più cordiali saluti

THE SEMINAR

Coherently with UIA-PHG Group’s mission, the aim of the Seminar is to provide an opportunity to hear from a diverse panel expert speakers: on one hand, those dealing with the design – researchers, architects, engineers, consultants - on the other, those in charge of the healthcare management.

The 28th Edition is looking forward to collecting experiences, ideas and new researches with an eye to the future. The biomedical technology innovation is growing fast and will no doubt have an impact on the characteristics, management and organization models of future healthcare. Those who design and manage health facilities can’t afford to miss out on this unique forum for discussion and learning.

In addition to operational issues, healthcare architecture must address the psychoemotional well-being and social development of those patients who spend long period of time in hospitals. Besides, if we consider the fast growth of chronic and disabling diseases that require palliative treatments, it becomes clear how necessary is to re-think which characteristics might shape the care sites of the future.

It has been estimated that hospital energy consumption is three times higher than the one for residential use. The implementation of solutions aiming at reducing energy waste through renewable sources is a vital part of today’s environmental culture and must therefore shape our new approach to hospital design that ought to take into con-sideration the buildings’ whole life cycle costs.

IL SEMINARIO

Coerentemente con la missione del gruppo UIA-PHG, lo scopo del seminario è quello di offrire una opportunità di dialogo tra i diversi professionisti che si occupano della concezione – ricer-catori, architetti, ingegneri, consulenti – e della gestione di strutture sanitarie.Questa 28esima edizione del seminario vuole in particolare raccogliere esperienze, rifl es-sioni, ricerche che puntino il loro sguardo verso il futuro. Il passo con cui si susseguono le innovazioni nel campo delle tecnologie biomedicali è sempre più serrato.

Per chi progetta e gestisce strutture sanitarie l’impatto di tali innovazioni sulla tipologia, sui modelli gestionali e organizzativi è certamente una variabile imprescindibile.Accanto a problematiche di natura funzionale, l’architettura sanitaria deve confrontarsi con i temi del benessere psico-emotivo e sociale delle persone che si trovano a permanere, per periodi più o meno lunghi, al suo interno. Se si considera, poi, il trend di forte crescita delle patologie croniche, che richiedono cure di tipo palliativo, e delle patologie invalidanti, allora diviene necessario un più ampio ripensamento di quali saranno nel futuro i luoghi della cura e quali le loro caratteristiche.

È stato stimato che il consumo di energia riferito alle strutture ospedaliere e’ superiore di circa tre volte quello per uso abitativo. L’adozione di soluzioni mirate al contenimento del consumo energetico e all’impiego di fonti rinnovabili, oltre ad essere una dovuta azione di salvaguardia ambientale, si inquadra in un approccio al progetto dell’ospedale ispirato ai principi del life cycling cost, la cui rilevanza strategica è sottolineata con forza sempre crescente.

Monday 23rd we are presenting a forum for the development of an international Design Quality Standards Review Panel for healthy environments and technologies in the healthcare sectors.

The objectives are;> To develop leadership and expertise in design guidance, standards development, capital investment and costing at an international level> To develop toolkits and benchmarking procedures to assist health providers manage their design requirements from initial proposal through to post-project evaluation> To initiate international research programs to better understand the impact of the built environment on public health> To facilitate the international exchange of knowledge, expertise and best practice around the role of the health sciences in developing design guidance> To help deliver healthy environments and facilities that are sustainable, fi t for purpose and contribute to health promotion.

EVENTO SPECIALE

Lunedì 23 giugno verrà organizzato un forum per la costituzione di un gruppo internazionale di esperti interessati all’elaborazione di Standard Qualitativi diProgetto per ambienti e tecnologie sanitarie.

Gli obiettivi sono:> sviluppare una leadership e una specifi ca competenza di livello internazionale fi nalizzata a fornire indirizzi alla progettazione, a sviluppare standard qualitativi ed a ottimizzare gli inve-stimenti e i costi;> sviluppare strumenti e procedure di benchmarking per assistere i soggetti che forniscono servizi sanitari nella gestione dei requisiti di progetto dalla proposta iniziale fi no alla fase di valutazione post-progetto;> intraprendere programmi di ricerca internazionali per acquisire una migliore comprensione dell’impatto dell’ambiente costruito sulla salute pubblica;> facilitare uno scambio internazionale di conoscenze, competenze e best practice circa il ruolo delle scienze della salute nello sviluppare indirizzi progettuali;> contribuire a concepire ambienti ed edifi ci sani, sostenibili, in grado di soddisfare gli obbiet-tivi prefi ssati e di promuovere la salute.

Lunch breakIl lunch della seconda delle due giornate dei lavori seminariali che si terranno nell’Aula Ma-gna del Rettorato dell’Università degli Studi di Firenze (25 giugno) sarà ospitato negli spazi del vicino Ospedale degli Innocenti. Durante il break sarà eccezionalmente possibile visitare la Galleria museale dell’Istituto degli Innocenti che raccoglie importanti opere pittoriche. La Galleria è situata nel locale sopra il portico di facciata che, nel progetto brunelleschiano, era destinato ad “abituro dei fanciulli”. Qui sono visibili, tra gli altri, la splendida Adorazione dei Magi (1488) di Domenico Ghirlandaio, la Madonna col Bambino (1450 circa) di Luca della Robbia e una Madonna col Bambino di Sandro Botticelli.

Lunch breakOn Wednesday 25 th lunch will be arranged in the nearby Spedale degli Innocen-ti. During lunch break, it will be possible to visit the Picture Gallery of the Spedale degli Innocenti (Hospital of the Innocents) that was Florence fi rst children’s orphanage de-signed by Filippo Brunelleschi in 1419. The Gallery, above the loggia facing Piazza SS.Annunziata, was designed as “abituro dei fanciulli”. Among the many paintings, the exhibition includes the “Adorazione dei Magi” (1488) by Domenico Ghirlandaio, the Virgin and Child (1450 ca.) by Luca della Robbia and one of his “Madonna col Bambino” by Sandro Botticelli.

Visita all’Ospedale di MontepulcianoL’evento è aperto a tutti coloro che si iscriveranno.

Il presidio “Ospedali riuniti della Val di Chiana Senese” è stato inaugurato il 14 gennaio del 2001 ed è situato nel comune di Montepulciano nel cuore dell’area della Val di Chiana la cui bellezza tanto impressionò Wolfgang von Goethe durante il suo Viaggio in Italia. La struttura si articola su sette piani, due dei quali interrati, e ospita 255 posti letto. L’ospedale è stato giudicato il più sicuro e accogliente d’Italia in seguito ad un’indagine svolta dal Tribunale per i diritti dei malati-Cittadinanza attiva su 50 presidi in tutta la penisola, riportando la votazione di 998 su 1000. Il 4 giugno del 2002 è stato inoltre insignito dall’UNICEF - OMS quale quarto ospedale in Italia “Amico dei bambini”.

The Joint Hospitals of Val di Chiana (“Ospedali Riuniti della Val di Chiana Senese”) has been offi cially opened on the 14th January 2001. The Hospital is close to the town of Montepulciano and is surrounded by the picturesque area of Val di Chiana whose astoni-shing beauty greatly impressed Wolfgang von Goethe during his Italian Tour.The Hospital is composed of seven fl oors, two of them underground, and counts a total of 255 beds.It has received the prestigious recognition of “most safe and welcoming Italian Hospital” according to a survey by the “Court of Patients’ Rights” (Tribunale per i Diritti del Malato) . On 4th June 2002 Montepulciano General Hospital has been granted the recognition of fourth Italian “child-friendly” hospital by UNICEF - OMS.

The speakers will fi nd a person in charge of controlling and trying all the audio and visual materials. It is compulsory to try the material and to verify the digital equipment suitability. All the tests have to be done at least two hours before the speech. Each speaker has to pick up his own material (CD or pen drive) at the end of the speech.

How to reach the New Meyer:The New Meyer Children’s Hospital is in Viale Pieraccini right after the Careggi Hospital. It is in the fi rst house entering into the Hospital (exactly in front of the car park, where you can see the “Blue Volkswagen Beetle”)

From the highway:You have to leave the highway at Firenze Nord-Peretola and follow the existing information for the Careggi Ho-spital. You have to drive through: Via Peretola, Via Astronauti, Viale Guidoni, Viale XI Agosto, Via Sestese, Via Caldieri, Via Quiete, Via delle Oblate, Viale Pieraccini.

By train or bus:From Santa Maria Novella Railway Station you have to take Bus n. 14C.From Rifredi Railway Station you have to take Bus R.From Dalmazia Square you have to take Bus n. 43 or Bus R.From Santa Maria Novella Railway Station there are a lot of trains that will reach Rifredi Railway Station where you can take Bus R, which will make the following route: Rifredi Railway Station, Dalmazia Square, Viale Morgagni, Pieraccini Careggi, Monna Tessa and Pieraccini Villa Ognissanti.

Car park: Near the New Meyer Hospital, there is the Viale Pieraccini car park.
