Betty the butterfly loved to fly. Her love of flying was great because she got to see many things. One day she decided to fly to New York City and see the sights. Betty found herself hungry and decided a stop in Central Park would be just the thing.

Making an inference

• Text clue- Betty found herself hungry and decided a stop in Central Park would be just the thing.

• Background knowledge- I know butterflies live off plants or insects.

• I think that she went to the park to eat plants or insects.

Betty the Butterfly

• It was May so Betty ate her fill from all the flowers and trees that were blooming. Once she was full she decided to fly up high over the park to see the view. Betty was flying free and she decided that the big shiny building would be her next stop.

Making an inference

• Text clue- she decided that the big shiny building would be her next stop.

• Background Knowledge- Butterflies don’t make decisions to visit buildings as far as I know.

• I infer the selection is fiction because I don’t think butterflies decide to travel to New York City.

She headed toward the Empire State Building. Next Betty went to the Statue of Liberty where she met her cousin Benny Bee. Together they decided they would take a Ferry ride to Ellis Island. It was great to ride the ferry and catch up with Benny Bee.

• I think the selection is a fiction story because bees and butterflies are not cousins.

• Tommy said “We should ask Grandpa Owl what to do?” Bobby agreed and they traveled to Owl’s tree together. Through the valley, past the pond and then they climbed the tree.

• As soon as owl saw them he said “Hello!” Tommy and Bobby sat and told owl all about their problem. Owl smiled wisely and said “Well my boy just pull it out!” Tommy laughed and Bobby pulled out the thorn making his paw feel better.
