Summer in the Philippines is more than just a breather from the cold season. It is more than just the beach, the sun, the sand and all the extra time that we may have on our hands.

Summer for Filipinos, as with most things Filipino, is also a time to celebrate the goodness of God. It is at this time, that we commemorate the death of our Savior, Jesus Christ. That is why many of the festivals on the months of March and April is focused on His death and resurrection.

This is also symbolic for iNeed. In the end of last year we traversed a gigantic mountain. And although at this time we are not even halfway that mountain, we have made a lot of progress with the help of God and several good people who believed in the ideals of the magazine.

We are more than grateful.This issue is a celebration of life. We have prepared a

few adrenaline pumping adventures for you to experience, but fi rst take a look at our calendar of Events and check out which one you could catch. Ok, so its loaded with festivals laced with religion and spirituality, but hey, that’s what being Filipino is all about.

Then take one of the many AdvenTours that our regular contributor and good friend, Rail, has compiled for you. And then there is the most laudible tourism project of Cebu Governor, Madam Gwen Garcia, of which our dear friend, Aldo will be taking us with the magic of his lens. Katrina was kind enough to put these pictures to words in Discoverng Cebu’s Heritage.

For this issue’s Picks, Paolo will introduce to us new fl avors that both locals and travelers must try.

And then Jeremy took a short journey to the summer capital of the country - Boracay - to

see for himself if one can indeed fi nd solace in this otherwise activity-laden island.

So, why don’t you put on that sunblock, ready those sunglasses

and straw hats and enjoy the sun and sand. Have fun!

The fi rst time I heard of Jjambbong was in an

instant noodle commercial (they spell it jjamppong, but its the same thing). Apparently the noodle company wanted to ride the Korean-fever that’s been spreading all over the country thanks to the Korean soaps that’s been invading the small screen.

Ok, so I did fall for it and fell in line to taste this seafoody Korean import, and as my palate is so into spicy stuff s, I developed a liking to it.

Recently, some friends from iNeed treated me to a genuine Jjambbong, and was I taken by surprise! Totally diff erent in taste, what would you expect from a dish with real ingredients?

Jjambbong, is not entirely Korean as what the commercial is claiming, rather it is a Koreanized Chinese noodle fare. There are also versions of this dish in Japan, and it is believed that the dish was fi rst prepared there, in Nagasaki. In

fact, a jjambbong museum can be found there.

The Korean Jjambbong was fi rst concocted in Incheon, where the most number of Chinese settlers are. The infl uence of the dish is the Chinese chaomachan made of stir-fried vegetables added with soup and noodles.

But since most Koreans are not into frying, their own version emerged with the vegetables boiled rather than fried and with lots of spices. Now we have the Koreanized genuine jjambbong loaded with mussels, squid and shrimps!

Top it with jjambbong noodles, lots of vegetables, and season with fi sh sauce, oyster sauce and lots and lots of spices. Pour in the kelp and dried anchovy stock (or chicken stock), and then sweat your heart out as you enjoy this most fi lling, healthy and delicious dish.

A totally diff erent Chinese dish. Why not?

Cebu is the most progressive province in central Philippines. It is a narrow island measuring 225 km from North to South and is flanked on both sides by the straits of Bohol (between Bohol and Cebu) and Tañon (between Cebu and Negros). Its capital city, Cebu City, is the oldest city in the country. Cebu City is just 20-minutes away from the Mactan-Cebu International Airport. It has all the makings of a metropolitan center and is considered as one of the best venues for seminars and conferences owing to its many facilities like hotels and restaurants.

San Remegio

세부에서 가장 긴 해변이 자랑거리이다. 상어와 만타레이, 고래 상어와 각종 수중 생물을 만나기 좋은 곳.

세부의 남동쪽에 위치한 섬이다. 세부와는 두개의 다리로 연결되어있다.(막탄다리,마셀로 퍼르난 다리) 막탄전쟁으로 불리는 서구세력과의 최초의 전투가 있었던 곳이다. 막탄-세부 국제공항이 있는곳이기도 하다.

An island to the southeast of Cebu, it is connected to mainland Cebu by two bridges: the Mactan Bridge and the Marcelo Fernan Bridge. The island is the site of the very first resistance staged by the natives against its European conquerors known as the Battle of Mactan. This is also where the Mactan-Cebu International Airport is.

A 3rd class municipality it boasts of having the longest shoreline in the island of Cebu. In its waters you can still find sharks, manta rays, whale sharks, and other marine animals.

Home of the famous Philippine Tarsiers (the smallest primate in the world) and the New 7 Wonders of Nature nominee, the Chocolate Hills, Bohol is located in the Central Visayas region with Cebu to the west, the province Leyte to the northeast and the island of Mindanao across the Bohol Sea to the south.

Known for its white sand beaches and excellent diving facilities, Moalboal is located in the southwestern part of Cebu island, 89 kilometers from Cebu City. An interesting place to visit when in Moalboal is Pescador Island, a small limestone island in the middle of Tañon Strait.

Last January, I was privileged to have a light-hearted

conversation with internationally-acclaimed Canada-based Cebuano artist Paulina Constancia. The scene of our interview was so surreal as we were surrounded by wild plants beautifully growing at the back of their family-owned hotel, Mayfl ower Hotel just beside the Cebu Capitol Building. At that time she had an exhibit dubbed Niños, the proceeds of which was to benefi t her pet foundation, Batang Mekong.

Batang Mekong is a non-government organization that provides children of scavengers near the Inayawan Dump Site proper education, better nutrition and health support.

That was why, Paulina dubbed her collection Niños. But the title is not just because of the benefi ciary or the timing of her exhibit, which coincides with that of the famous Sinulog Festival, but also because the whole thing was about celebrating childhood.

The works in this collection not only show kids in all stages of their childhood but also educates about children’s rights. “We are trying to project here that all children should be able to experience all

of these (rights) because these are very basic. Education is not a privilege, its a right. Play is a right,” she said.

Thus, you would see children in school having fun while learning, or kids trying to discover themselves through diff erent art mediums like painting and music.

Paulina’s light-hearted social commentaries make her works palatable even to the conservatives who has no political leaning (not that Paulina subscribes to a particular ideology).

So what makes Paulina’s paintings one-of-a-kind?

She likes to describe her art as naïf. “I don’t follow any particular form, it just depends on the theme,” she said. She confesses that she likes to use bright colors and her works has a Baroque-feel, as she puts it, “never leaving enough alone.”

Although every space on the canvass is occupied one could never feel it being crowded. There is a kind of unity that makes her works very pleasing and enjoyable to look at and admire.
