This process covers the technical definition of the product as well as the different industrial processes used to design, develop and manufacture the product.

Finally, in order to be operational, this process relies on technology, such as CAD (Computer Aided Design) software, digital simulation software, and data management software, referred to as PDM (Product Data Management) at a departmental level, or PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) across the company’s extended ecosystem.

Thanks to PLM, each party involved in the development of a manufactured product has access to up-to-date information specific to their profession, which can be monitored in real time to understand the connections between them.

DEMOCRATIZATION OF PLM

Why are manufacturers interested in this process?

Any industrial company, whether an SMB or a large corporation, needs to manage its entire value chain, from design to production. Effective process management helps ensure the success of new projects and the sustainability of a company’s business. This is the promise offered by PLM and the reason why investment in this area continues to grow and has done so for the last 10 years. According to CIMdata*, the global PLM market in 2007 was worth 24.7 billion dollars. This reached 38.7 billion dollars in 2015, with a constant growth over this period of 6% per year. The following sectors are the most advanced in terms of investments: Electronics / Telecommunications / High-tech, Automotive / Transportation and manufacturing / assembly. However, we detect three stages of maturity with respect to PLM adoption. They can be summarized as follows:

The first stage is the adoption of 3D CAD software. The second is the deployment of PDM software. The third is the introduction of PLM software comprising advanced functions to manage company processes. In this latter stage, it is primarily a strategic decision rather than an IT project.

?The PLM acronym (Product Lifecycle Management) has been around for approximately 15 years and comprises a number of definitions.

The PLM approach is embedded in a company’s strategy to optimize the management of all information related to the creation of a product and continues throughout the product life cycle, from initial specifications to end-of-life.

For project managers, PLM should, above all else, provide enhanced control of all business processes, and allow users to capitalize their knowledge (see Figure 1).

The chosen solution must be compatible with CAD and ERP software (see Figure 2). Finally, the survey concludes that the principal difficulties of PLM are related to product, process, organizational modeling, and PLM - SAP - CAD interoperability.

We, therefore, recommend a method that facilitates the deployment of PLM tools and their interoperability with the existing business IT ecosystem.

The choice of a software solution is an important step in the PLM approach. However, it is not simply a tool that can be installed off the shelf on a user workstation without some additional steps...

On the contrary, its deployment in a company is often the key phase that determines a project’s success. Conventional processes rely on four successive steps.

The first step consists of producing a model using a common language based on requirements, processes and corporate data.

In other words, to answer the questions: who does what, with what data, when and how?

The second step is to generalize the processes that have been identified as essential to the customer’s industrial activity. This begins with “debugging” and a selection of models directly linked to PLM. For example, the procedure describing a modification of the product will be retained.

The third step involves adapting the generic models available within the PLM software to the business models that have been identified in the preceding step.

In other words, to configure the solution so that it specifically corresponds to the customer’s business processes.

This step involves synthesizing the cognitive requirements, processes and all necessary information acquired during work sessions with key users.

This enables users to develop the models. User feedback is incorporated in new models to validate the modifications that were made.

IMPLEMENTING A PLM SYSTEM

9

Page 10: INDUSTRY OF THE FUTURE€¦ · and the sustainability of a company’s business. This is the promise offered by PLM and the reason why investment in this area continues to grow and

Industries that adopt a PLM approach operate within a number of different sectors. These sectors range from aeronautics to fashion and from automotive to capital asset (property) markets. They do, however, have one thing in common: the need to exchange reliable information, both internally and externally with their customers, sub-contractors and suppliers.

PLM systems are designed to satisfy this need. However, as we have already seen, there are no plug and play solutions. Consequently, companies need to innovate in particular when addressing the three principal challenges that arise in a PLM project:

For more information, please contact: [email protected]

Deploying a PLM software that can function with pre-existing information systems. The solution must be able to effectively communicate with CAD software, company ERP systems, and in certain cases with the solutions used by their development partners.

1

Identification of key processes and the ability to model them. For many companies this is not an easy task, as the links between strategy, requirements and processes are not very clear and internal processes are not always readily identifiable.

2

Use of customer-specificsoftware features. Current PLM functionalities mainly reflectthe needs of key prime contractors from the automotive and aerospace industries.

CHARACTERISTICS OF SMBs AND VSBs

We have seen in our nearly ten years of experience in this area that each project is unique in terms of database architecture, interactions between heterogeneous software and process modeling that is at times not very industrialized.

At KEONYS we believe it is essential to develop a PLM solution for SMBs with an ambitious goal: on-site deployment within 20 days.

Paradoxically, to ensure that the PLM closely reflects the specific business operations of both small and medium businesses, the solution must be as generic as possible based on standard technological building blocks.

For more information, please contact: [email protected]

The building blocks provided by Dassault Systèmes have been logically selected.

The solution must also be open and flexible enough to be easily integrated within a diversified IT environment.

Finally, deployment must be as automated as much as possible.

By mastering these parameters, a PLM solution can be rapidly deployed without risking the ‘tunnel effect’ often encountered during traditional PLM projects.

In addition to large corporations, small and medium-size companies can also use PLM.SMBs and VSBs do not always have the human and technical resources available to manage the various phases of analysis, modeling and deployment described above.

AN ASPIRATION SYSTEM TO COLLECT VEHICLE MICROPARTICLE EMISSIONS

Today, a brake disc emits six times more microparticles per kilometer than an exhaust pipe.

As a result, we have designed an aspiration system able to collect the microparticle emissions produced during braking.

““

Christophe Rocca-Serra, President & Founder of Tallano Technologie

The French start-up Tallano Technologie has designed and manufactured an innovative concept to reduce microparticle emissions produced during braking suited to both the automotive and rail industries. The first vehicles equipped with this innovative system are expected towards the end of 2016. Within the next few years we plan to install the system on a wide range of wheeled vehicles around the world.

BENEFITS

Microparticle emissions during braking have been reduced from 30 mg/km to 0.9 mg/km, which represents a decrease of more than 90%. The system is highly adaptable and can be fitted to vehicles from small urban cars to trains.

INDUSTRIAL CHALLENGES

Produce a turbine capable of capturing the microparticles emitted from the brake discs required many years of research. This research was necessary to better understand the behavior and to handle numerous constraints, such as temperature and size.

A VESSEL TO CLEAN UP OIL SPILLS

ECOCEANE

We envisioned a vessel with a unique characteristic: a turbine propulsion system that not only provides thrust but also produces a current to capture all floating debris.

We model the processes and simulate the behavior of the vessel to ensure the right product design is selected the first time.

““Eric Vial, President Ecocéane

The Breton company develops and markets multi-purpose vessels for the collection of hydrocarbons and floating solid waste at sea. The greatest challenge was to find a solution that enabled to collect spilt oil effectively without generating any emulsions in wind speeds up to force 5 or 6, while allowing for the separated oil to be stored and at all times ensure the safety of people on board.

BENEFITS

Productivity gains of 40 to 50%, which allows us to focus more on innovation. All elements of the process are now linked together from the design department to the engineering workshop, allowing to collaborate in real time.Upstream operational validation can now be achieved demonstrating the vessel in operational conditions without having to launch a physical prototype, which provides an unparalleled competitive advantage.

INDUSTRIAL CHALLENGES

The complexity of this industrial challenge required to control the entire boat construction process, from the initial design phase to the manufacturing process, including the selection of the most appropriate materials and the ability to reduce iterations.

The company has adopted digital design tools to generate prototype models, to manufacture sheet metal and to carry out hydrodynamic simulations to better understand, test and validate potential upstream flow characteristics within the vessel.

COMPUTING POWER SUPPORTING COMPLEX INDUSTRIAL FACILITIES

I noticed limitations and weaknesses during our design process in that we could control the fixed elements but we were not able to provide succinct information regarding the dynamic behavior within the facilities.“

“Raymond Pauly, Managing Director, CAPSIM

As a specialist design department working on the dynamic behavior of systems, CAPSIM is involved in the analysis and implementation of electrical networks and complex industrial facilities across various sectors including navy, heavy manufacturing, energy (nuclear power plants, photovoltaic power plants and wind farms, etc.) as well as scientific research sites (ITER (International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor) etc.).

BENEFITS

Thanks to digital simulation software and specific implementation methodologies, CAPSIM is able to complete predictive simulations to reduce the risks associated to specific projects, from the design phase to the operation and maintenance of the network / facility.

Performance optimization, accurate delivery time-scales and reliability of the final service are all key areas upon which their customers differentiate between the service they offer and the service provided by their competitors.

INDUSTRIAL CHALLENGES

One of the key challenges CAPSIM encountered was the need to convince key clients that the methodologies they developed to predict and anticipate the risks inherent in large-scale industrial projects were crucial to their interests.

The digital simulation tools allow CAPSIM to perform complex calculations and create models tailored to specific technical objectives and to the specifications in any given project.
