Industry 4.0 needs specific tools. What could these look like?

The Intrexx workflow engine provides immediate access to multiple SICK sensors via the innovative “SICK Communication Library” (SCL). Using this technology, companies can include the key figures from the production and the equipment effectiveness in web applications with feasible effort – even while mobile on smartphones. With this, it’s possible to include customers and suppliers and to record the entire lifecycle of a product.

In a co-innovation project, the portal specialist, United Planet, and the technology leader in sensor engineering, SICK AG, have created an example of implementation for industry 4.0 scenarios. The symbiosis of sensors and software forms a platform upon which use cases individual to the industry can be modelled.

The production simulation demonstrates an example of an interlinked production process – from ordering via manufacturing through to quality assurance and customer service. This should be a clear demonstration as to how innovative sensor technology can be combined with the portal framework, Intrexx, to facilitate a 360-degree view of the production.

The right software

With the portal software, Intrexx, enterprise portals, and also individual applications, can be created and customized flexibly. Furthermore, signals from various sensors can be portrayed and processed. Connecting these properties makes it possible to interconnect the production with relatively minimal effort.

software

Intrexx can react to sensor events, but can also modify entire sensor configurations (e.g. adjust comparison images for pattern recognition in optical sensors to the product just created). Beyond that, escalation processes can be modelled

Efficiency and competing power – even for SMEs

(e.g. automated notifications for anomalies during production).

Furthermore, in the simulation, servicing calendars for the plant are created automatically and facilitate an anticipatory planning of service time windows. The monitoring options reach all the way

through to customer-specific tracking and tracing during production.

Using standardized interfaces, Intrexx enables access to multiple third-party systems (SAP Enterprise Edition, SAP NetWeaver Gateway, Microsoft SharePoint, Lotus

Notes, all JDBC-enabled databases, DMS, and much more). This then allows this information to be linked to the current production data.

Intrexx can then accordingly portray the production infor-mation in web applications. Customers, as well as sup-pliers, can access this with mobile or standard browsers in real-time. The increased interconnection brings improvements to quality and efficiency.

enables a rapid overview of the current plant and provides the platform for anticipatory maintenance.

Using processes, all of the information from the sensors can be accessed.

>> Improve plant utilization with a maintenance plan

>> Create processes with the graphical development interface

Information, such as the next service time, the current uptime, statistics regarding bad reads / good reads and much more, can be identified and processed graphically.

All information can of course be manually supplemented by the plant operator. Thanks to its graphical development interface, Intrexx provides complete support for individual modifications meaning edit pages can be customized flexibly.

The interconnected production

Production on demand

The Industry 4.0 portal can be connected to any ERP or shop software. This makes it possible to automatically start production as soon as an order is submitted.

How the order is created in the ERP system is principally an individual process – manually, via a web shop or automated. Intrexx’s integration options enable the inclusion of practically any scenario. Even if the order process has already been validated by a variety of business processes, the information can be processed.

For the sake of simplicity, the orders are entered directly in the portal in the showcase. Once an order has been created in the showcase, the production phase starts immediately. Here, the ID of

The customer is king – now they can choose when production starts

>> Connecting the RFID chip to the order

the RFID chip is connected to the data record of the order.

Via a process, the ID is recorded using the RFID Interrogator RFU 620 from SICK. At this point, describable RFID tags can of course be provided with individual data so that, for example, production details can be permanently coupled to this article.

In the showcase, information is also written directly to the connected SAP Enterprise System using a connector – information can also be read from here.

A unique tracking number is generated for each ordering procedure. The customer is notified via email that their individualized production has been started. Using the tracking number, they are able to access their order directly.

The automated sending of emails and directly filtering different views to a special data record are standard features of Intrexx. They can be adjusted as is required to the individual case.

Customized production

In the showcase, the customer is provided with the ability to order select special accessories. This ordering option is however dependent on the current processing status of their product. By using the SICK RFU sensors, the system knows which processing status has currently been reached. With simple filtering mechanisms, you can determine exactly up until which point changes can be made. In the example, changes are only possible up until the processing status “Mid-production”.

Using the sensors, the corresponding work piece is recorded without contact

and the information is forwarded to the data pool via an Intrexx process. In the showcase, this leads to continual, fully-automated documentation for the entire production chain. The entire product lifecycle is recorded in the showcase. This lifecycle can be provided to the customer and made usable for the analysis of the overall equipment effectiveness (OEE).

Especially for certified undertakings, the ability to automate audit trails is an important component of daily business. Using the portal, this information can be depicted as needed or made available as a PDF document via the document generation tool.

Automated workflow

Even supplying companies can be integrated directly using the portal as an extranet. Information is exchanged smoothly and collaboration with partners is improved.

In the showcase, an email notification is automatically sent to the supplier as soon as special accessories are ordered. The supplier can confirm having received the order and its shipping conveniently. In the portal environment, they can see an overview of all of the carried-out transactions.

In a real application case, it would be possible to provide feedback to the production and of course to the customer. This means that the customer is notified regarding problems with delivering a specialized part and then provided with the

new presumed delivery date. Upon receiving this notification, the customer can adjust their order again and again to ensure punctual delivery despite problems. Using the feedback, the production can utilize the full capacity of their equipment. Via a process, the ID is recorded using the RFID Interrogator RFU 620 from SICK. At this point,

provably improved and the workplace’s attractiveness is increased. That’s why social collaboration is becoming more and more important.

The application Intrexx Share was integrated into the production simulation. This not only facilitates simple communication between people but incorporates notifications from applications, processes and machines into the news feed of employees or groups. In the showcase, notifications are automatically generated

when an order is created or when special accessories are ordered. Those responsible are therefore always up-to-date and can discuss certain actions and take actions as necessary.

Industry 4.0 can be understood as a part of comprehensive digitalization. In the showcase, the interconnection was taken even further by implementing social collaboration software.

Social collaboration uses software to support teamwork in projects and teams. It promotes knowledge exchange, encourages innovations and can simplify processes. As well as the rapid, asynchronous recording of information, collaboration is

The showcase can, among other things, demonstrate the fully-integrated control of sensors among themselves and especially the simple switching of configurations.

In our case, the entry of a vehicle is triggered via a laser scanner TIM. The vehicle is automatically measured using characteristic maps. The corresponding process now directs the SICK RFU 620 to read the RFID tag and identifies the order accordingly.

Based on the order and the measured characteristic map, a check is performed as to whether the correct vehicle was produced. The pattern recognition is automatically reconfigured with the

proof-sample from the order and the corresponding parameters are loaded. Following that, the pattern recognition delivers the

result and the process saves a live-image of the current production. Considerably more product properties would of course be recorded in a real use case.

All of this information is available to the production. Actions can then be triggered from here (e.g. the sending of a notification to the customer that the production is finished, the writing of posts in the social collaboration application, Intrexx Share, the triggering of possible escalation processes etc.).

Automated quality assurance

Page 11: Industry 4.0 Showcase - Seidor> SAP integration with the Intrexx Portal Manager The portal provides the company with an overview of all data from the current production. To begin with,

The uninterrupted tracking of the product enables you to consistently improve customer satisfaction. In the showcase, the customer receives a service manual with their product. This has a barcode on it which was automatically generated when the order was created.

The product can still be tracked, even after it’s been completed. Subsequent positions, such as workshops are integrated in order to provide the customer with the best possible service. The service point responsible for servicing is equipped with a barcode scanner. The service manual is scanned using this and a task is automatically generated. The task is assigned to the ordered product via a process and can therefore be

tracked at any point in time. This provides the customer with transparency (e.g. the mileage of a vehicle would be calculable and tamper-proof, even upon change of owner). Furthermore, both the manufacturing company and the service partner benefit from the continual documentation of the entire product lifecycle.

Management dashboard

A variety of key figures and measurements from the production can be presented with clarity in the Industry 4.0 portal. This means the equipment effectiveness can be monitored at any time and from anywhere. All of the information retrieved from the sensors in the plant, can be post processed, evaluated and depicted as needed. On the basis of the graphical presentation of

targeted and actual values in the management dashboard, managers and controllers are always up-to-date and this creates greater potential for their success.

In the showcase, the analysis was limited to the number of produced vehicles, the

throughput of individual stations and important servicing information. A lot more data would be utilized in a real use case. This means, for example, that sources of error can be pointed out and both quality and efficiency can be increased.

The portal provides the ability to process the information from the

production, which was recorded via sensors, together with data from various software systems on one platform. Using interfaces for various ERP, BI, CRM or even DMS systems, all relevant data can be merged together in one location. This creates

the foundation for better decisions and expedient measures.

developed in the co-innovation project. Multiple processes could then be depicted based on this. Integrating sensors enables the processing of measurement data in web applications, as well as switching the sensor configuration at the click of the mouse. The Industry 4.0 portal can serve as an interface which integrates customers and business partners in business and value-added processes. The interconnection of all parties involved in the value-added chain facilitates, among other things, customized production and continual documentation of the entire product lifecycle.

11

>> Connecting sensors and portal software brings clear benefits

The showcase should provide inspiration for how Industry 4.0 scenarios can be realized by combining a frontend, a workflow engine and modern sensors. The difficulty here is that the application scenarios are drastically different for each company.

The portal software, Intrexx, was already able to prove its comprehensive integration capabilities in many successful projects. That’s why the showcase should test whether Intrexx is a suitable tool to provide data from production in a web-based manner and to couple it with other information.

Specifically, an interface between the “SICK Communication Library” (SCL) and Intrexx was
