Our Past, Present and Future JENSEN HUGHES was formed in January 2015 after the historic merger of two of the most experienced and respected specialty engineering and consulting firms, Hughes Associates (Hughes) and Rolf Jensen & Associates (RJA) in June 2014.

Both Hughes and RJA exhibited the highest level of technical excellence, offered proven on-time and on-budget performance on projects, and developed long-term client relationships. The merger brought together Hughes’ strengths in areas such as research, testing, forensic engineering and risk analysis, and the complementary strengths of RJA in the areas of code consulting, performance-based design, construction management and security design.

Fire Protection and Life Safety Design and Analysis Our experts design cost-effective, performance-based protection systems that meet code requirements and the highest standards of life safety. We routinely handle challenging designs which involve life safety, mission continuity, property protection, heritage preservation, and environmental protection.

Code Consulting Our problem-solving consultants ensure design and construction projects comply with safety (Building, Fire, Hazardous Materials, etc.) and accessibility codes, maintain the integrity of architectural design, preserve historical authenticity, and address a wide range of project-specific requirements, including code equivalencies and variance requests.

Union Pacific Railroad, Various Loss Control Services

JENSEN HUGHES has been performing loss control surveys at all of Union Pacific (UP) major locations across the United States. The surveys provide UP with recommendations to protect life, property and to ensure the operational needs of the corporation (movement of trains). All recommendations, building data, reports and drawings are located on a custom JENSEN HUGHES Extranet site for UP where any UP employee can obtain information from the reports. We are providing consulting services to any UP person from corporate engineering managers to local building managers as the need arises.

JENSEN HUGHES also performed loss investigations as required, including one for a vintage railcar. As the result of a suggestion from us, UP initiated a fire protection improvement program that provided corporate funding to replace and upgrade identified fire protection systems, resulting in marked improvements at a number of UP locations. JENSEN HUGHES prioritized the recommendations across the system to streamline corporate justification for these improvements.

Cripple Creek and Victor Gold Mining Co., Victor, CO Code Review JENSEN HUGHES provided an initial code review, hazardous material evaluation and life safety drawings for the proposed ball mill. A third party review of the fire protection systems was also included in the scope of work.

Shasta Beverages, Inc., Houston, TX Fire Safety Code Consulting JENSEN HUGHES provided consulting for the Shasta Beverage facility for high piled and hazardous materials storage.

Red Hill Fuel Storage, Pearl Harbor, HI Hazardous Area Classification Report JENSEN HUGHES assisted in gathering field data and preparing a Hazardous Area Classification Report for the Red Hill Underground Fuel Storage Facility.

Servomex, Sugar Land, TX Code Consulting JENSEN HUGHES assisted with the determination of fire protection and life safety design requirements for the new Servomex gas analysis facility that will contain hazardous gasses in cylinders that will be piped into the building. JENSEN HUGHES provided assistance with obtaining the certificates and permits necessary for gas storage and use.

Animal Health International, Inc., Dallas, TX Fire Protection Consulting Services JENSEN HUGHES performed a comprehensive hazardous materials code compliance evaluation to determine the available storage options to comply with local codes and meet operational needs of the organization's proposed new location. A Hazardous Materials Inventory Statement (HMIS) was prepared and a review was made of existing fire protection system provisions for adequacy.

Nickey Warehouse, Inc., Carrollton, TX Fire Protection Consulting Services JENSEN HUGHES assisted in developing and implementing an operationally sustainable, cost effective and code complaint storage and operations plan at the Nickey facility that warehouses chemical commodities.

Weatherford Chrome Plating, Colorado Springs, CO Fire Protection Engineering Services JENSEN HUGHES provided code consulting, life safety plans and a hazardous materials report for a new manufacturing plant for pipe plating. The project also included a new storage building. Both facilities are high hazard occupancies.

Honda America Manufacturing, Inc., East Liberty, OH Fire Protection Engineering Study JENSEN HUGHES assisted Honda in the evaluation of and classification of the area and surrounding areas process in the manufacture of motor vehicles.

Naturex, Houston, TX Fire Protection Assessment JENSEN HUGHES provided a fire protection assessment of a building Naturex plans to purchase for a new krill oil processing facility involving hazardous materials.

Microfluidics, Inc. Westwood, MA Hazardous Materials Analysis JENSEN HUGHES evaluated and provided a hazardous materials analysis for the storage and use of hazardous materials in the laboratory space at the Microfluidics high shear fluid processor facility.

Altria, Richmond, VA Fire Protection and Water Supply Evaluation JENSEN HUGHES is providing fire protection engineering services, including fire sprinkler, fire alarm, mass notification and combustible dust hazard mitigation at the Altria facility.

BAER Supply Company, Providence, RI Fire Protection Consulting Services, Hazardous Materials Storage JENSEN HUGHES provided services related to the storage and minimum required protection of the flammable and combustible liquids and other hazardous materials within a storage facility housing woodworking supplies.

DC Foam Recycle, Inc., Baltimore, MD Dust Hazard Analysis JENSEN HUGHES performed a hazard assessment of dust associated with a carpet recycling facility.

CreaFill Fibers Corp., Chestertown, MD Dust Hazard Review JENSEN HUGHES conducted a dust collection system code compliance review at the specialty cellulose manufacturing fiber plant.

PoolCorp Retail & Warehouse Facilities, Nationwide Locations (2009-Present) Fire Safety Consulting & Hazardous Material Classification JENSEN HUGHES is providing services for existing and proposed new retail and storage facilities.

The Proctor & Gamble Manufacturing Company, St. Louis, MO Fire Safety Code Consulting, Distribution Warehouses

Code consulting services were provided to assist in the development of a plan to store hazardous materials in a large metropolitan area. The operations in six warehouses would be consolidated into three warehouses. Two of the warehouses stored flammable liquids and corrosive materials. Site visits were conducted to determine the type, volume, and current storage arrangement of flammable and combustible liquids. A code analysis and narrative was prepared to explain the means of code compliance to satisfy the AHJ and the company's operational needs.

Leslie's Poolmart Chemical Distribution Center, Dallas, TX Hazmat & Code Compliance Analysis Services were provided for the proposed location of a pool chemical distribution center. A hazardous materials classification analysis was conducted for the products to be stored. A code research was performed to determine the critical requirements and limitations of the facility. JENSEN HUGHES assisted the client architect to develop and optimize the facility layout.

LM Glasfiber, Inc., Grand Forks, ND Hazardous Chemical Consulting A site survey was conducted to assess the operating conditions with respect to a gel coat operation used on composite materials and the planned upgrade for electrical equipment in the same work area. The assessment determined the type of materials involved, operating conditions, the use and storage of hazardous chemicals, and the proposed timing of operations and the electrical upgrade activity.

The Dow Chemical Company, Charleston, IL Facility Fire Protection Evaluation

JENSEN HUGHES conducted a site visit to examine existing building conditions at Dow Chemical's Charleston, Illinois facility. An assessment was performed to determine the adequacy of the existing sprinkler system for high-piled storage for compliance with applicable NFPA and state codes. Product data was reviewed for materials to be used and stored within the facility to verify the appropriate occupancy and commodity classification information. Water supply data was obtained from the municipal water distribution company. An analysis of existing egress provisions was also performed. A draft report was prepared for Dow Chemical's review.

Great Western Ethanol, Evans, CO Fire Protection Engineering & Code Consulting Services Services were provided under contract to the City of Evans for the proposed construction of a one million gallon per year ethanol production plant, consisting of a production plant and storage of the final ethanol product. Consulting was provided for the plant, warehouse, laboratories, hazard production materials, waste products, and transportation delivery points.

Boaters World Retail Store, Anderson County, SC Hazardous Chemicals Consulting Services JENSEN HUGHES reviewed the materials safety data sheets (MSDS) for each chemical classified as a hazmat and stored in the retail stores. Hazardous Materials Inventory Statement (HMIS) was prepared along with MSDS hazmat reporting forms for the local AHJ to identify the physical hazards and health hazards for the stored materials.

Reeder Distributors, Fort Worth, TX HMMP and HMIS Preparation JENSEN HUGHES performed a code analysis of an existing distribution facility to determine compliance with the applicable building and fire codes. JENSEN HUGHES reviewed as-built documentation, fire protection drawings, and a site plan to prepare a Hazardous Materials Management Plan (HMMP) for submission to the AHJ. An inventory of all materials stored and transferred on the site was compiled, including the maximum anticipated quantities of all materials to be located on the site at any time. A site visit was conducted to survey the warehouses, tanks, storage arrangements, and fire protection systems.

Johnson Wax Lakeview Warehouse, Pleasant Prairie, WI Life Safety Analysis JENSEN HUGHES performed an egress analysis and code review of design of a warehouse to be used as storage for Class IIIB Combustible Liquids and Level I aerosol products. It was determined that the facility protection provides safe egress time even in the event of sprinkler system failure.

Pepsi Bottling Plant, Buena Park, CA Hazardous Materials Storage JENSEN HUGHES provided a summary of the hazardous materials used and stored in two warehouses with a combined area of approximately 450,000 square feet. Appropriate protection and management practices were developed, AHJ acceptance negotiated, and automatic sprinkler system, fire pump and hazardous materials storage facilities design were developed and submitted for AHJ approval. High Piled Storage permits were also obtained.

American Composites Manufacturers Association Hazardous Chemical Storage and Use Consulting A study and test program were developed to assess the hazards associated with the handling and storage of composites resin spray application to determine if the level of fire safety provided by NFPA 33 was appropriate to assure worker safety was consistent with OSHA's intended level of safety.

Amgen, Inc., Thousand Oaks, CA Fire Hazard Analysis JENSEN HUGHES evaluated the planned enlargement of the existing hazardous materials storage area to approximately three times the size and capacity in order to provide proper and compliant segregation of incompatible materials, and increased capacity for storage of materials essential to the site's research and development and production functions. JENSEN HUGHES also performed peer review services of the AFFF systems design documentation for the project. The design of this HazMat Area Upgrade Project was based on the generally accepted principles of physical separation of incompatible materials, fire protection throughout, spill control, secondary containment, and future flexibility, acknowledging that the HazMat Area is intended to store flammable/combustible liquids, acids, bases, corrosives, compressed gases, and cryogenics.

Rio Tinto Minerals, Centennial, CO Hazardous Materials Classification Assistance was provided to classify a list of hazardous chemicals and to determine the occupancy classification for a building based on that effort. The client provided chemicals inventories and each chemical was categorized as to its hazard as identified in the International Building Code and the International Fire Code (i.e., flammable liquid, corrosive, toxic, etc.)

Potash Mine, Regina, Canada Fire & Life Safety Fire Protection Services Provided an evaluation of fire and life safety for site buildings, reviewed drawings and specifications, and provided construction and commissioning support.

Underground Coal Mine, Campbell River, Canada Evaluation of Fire Explosion Hazards Evaluated mobile equipment fire explosion hazards and mitigation opportunities that included: maintenance procedures, spark arrestors, and motor exhaust temperature control.

Softwood Orientated Strand Board, Specialties Mill, 100 Mile House, Canada Control Evaluation Provided a control evaluation of the plant's three single pass dryers, air and heat recovery systems, and fugitive gas emissions. A control and explosion venting evaluation of dryers and associated cyclones was also conducted. A review for spark detection, alarm, and suppression control was also assessed.

INTERNATIONAL REGION Texas Instruments, Greenock, Scotland Fire Protection & Life Safety Engineering Services JENSEN HUGHES provided a comprehensive study of the International Fire Code and the Scottish requirements related to hazardous materials for this manufacturing plant.

Qatar Foundation Research Building, Phase II, Doha, Qatar Code Consulting JENSEN HUGHES provided fire protection code consulting for this science research building, which holds hazardous materials, which are used for processes within the building.

Flextronics, Dongguan, China Combustible Dust Hazard Assessment JENSEN HUGHES performed a site visit, hazard assessment of process activities generating and/or handling combustible dust; and developed mitigation strategies to deal with fire and explosion hazards associated with the combustible metal dusts in China.

Estee Lauder Co., Inc., Worldwide Locations Fire Protection & Life Safety Engineering Services JENSEN HUGHES conducted site visits for a comprehensive analysis of fire protection and life safety features of Estee Lauder Co. facilities located worldwide. Fire alarm, detection, and sprinkler systems were designed as needed to improve facility safety in U.S. and European facilities. JENSEN HUGHES assisted in the development of a master specification for new building fire protection and loss prevention projects. Services provided also included: training in testing and inspecting fire protection equipment; exit/egress studies; flammable liquid storage analysis; dust exposure evaluation; dust explosion analysis in powder manufacturing facilities; and analyses of fire and life safety in retail and distribution facilities. Locations included those in the U.S., Spain, Belgium and Canada.

Dow Corning, Songjiang Plant I, Shanghai, China Code Consulting and Special Study Service

Provided four on-site special inspection and testing reports after the acceptance of the fire protection system.

Novozymes Biotechnology, Tianjin Plant, China Site Visit Testing Services Provided site visit testing services for eight buildings, totaling 1,722,226 square feet. The testing included the fire protection system, which included: fire hydrant system, sprinkler system, fire alarm system and additional fire equipment.

Gillette, Shanghai Plant (P&G), China Life Safety Code Consulting Provided life safety code consulting for the expansion of the plant that totals 201,587 square feet. The plant is mainly used for production and storage. The levels vary from light threat level to a general threat level, and a high dangerous level.

Wuxi Atlas Copco Plant, Wuxi, China Code Consulting & Site Visit Testing Provided code consulting and site visit testing for this 279,862 square foot facility. The facility comprises of an assembly building, office building and ancillary building (R&D center, test lad, guard houses, test area, car park, underground fire water tank, oil and storage.

NYU Shanghai, Shanghai, China Fire Protection & Life Safety Code Consulting; Accessibility Design Provided fire protection and life safety code consulting services and accessibility design requirements for the NYU Shanghai campus located in Shanghai, China.

Prologis Chengdu Warehouse, Chengdu, China Evaluation of Fire Protection System Provided a conceptual evaluation of the fire protection system for this 484,376 square foot warehouse, which included three buildings. The water based fire protection system included a fire hydrant system and sprinkler system.

Stihl Qingdao Plant, Qingdao, China Site Visit & Commissioning Testing Provided an on-site review of the existing fire alarm system for this 419,793square foot facility. This facility is a very important member of Stihl's international manufacturing network.

Methanol Gas Plant, Trinidad Fire Safety Evaluation Provided a review of fire safety hazards for the plant cooling towers which included suppression options, lightning protection and spark detection. An overview of the chemical process to identify flue gas contamination and flue gas tower flame characteristics was also conducted.

JENSEN HUGHES has established a reputation for expertise, ethics, and competency in fire protection engineering and research. We have achieved this through years of active participation with regional, national and international building and fire code committees and regulatory bodies. We continue to contribute to the development of such codes through our representation both on and before many of these committees.
