And to make sure theengines you specify give you every possiblecompetitive advantage, we work to keep pushingperformance to even higher levels.

Today’s line-up of Cat engines offers some of the mostadvanced engineering features available for industrialpower applications. These include electronic enginecontrols, the HEUI™ (Hydraulically ActuatedElectronically Controlled Unit Injector) fuel systems,MEUI (Mechanical Electronic Unit Injector), andexclusive technologies that dramatically reduce engineemissions.

Meet EPA/EURO standards todayThe United States Environmental Protection Agencywill implement diesel engine gaseous emissions Tier 3 standards starting with engines built afterJanuary 1, 2005. Similar exhaust emissions standardsfor Stage IIIa will be implemented within the EECcountries in 2006.

Stationary, railway, and underground mining enginesare exempt. EPA has defined stationary as an enginethat does not move from a given location for one yearor more. The regulation covers engines on tracks, rubber tire vehicles, deck or propulsion, skids, oroffshore portable platforms.

Caterpillar offers diesel engines in three product lines:those certified to meet the new EPA, the current Tier 2standards, and the standard non-certified.

ISO 9001 CertificationIn 1992, Caterpillar’s Mossville Engine Center receivedISO certification. Today, 23 Caterpillar departments orfacilities have been ISO 9001 certified including ourLarge Engine Center in Lafayette, Indiana. Thiscompany-wide commitment to quality has translatedinto high customer acceptance in the diesel and gasengine markets worldwide.

Cat ACERT® TechnologyTier 3 certified engines include Cat ACERT Technology,a clever blend of improved air management, sophisticated electronic controls and advanced fuelinjection. Caterpillar engines do not requireaftertreatment to meet Tier 3/Stage IIIa standards.

ADEM 4With the ADEM 4 and ACERT Technology it’s notlonger just an engine, it’s tomorrow’s engine, smarterand cleaner, but from the same the company youknow and trust.

ADEM 4 is the latest version of Cat’s uniqueelectronic engine control system. The new ADEM 4gives you more knowledge of the inner workings andperformance of your engine. In addition, ADEM 4grants you more control over engine performancewith precise fuel control. Precise fuel control isachieved through a new technology of injectiontiming and delivering the precise amounts of fuel.ADEM 4 continuously monitors your engineparameters and adjusts accordingly; this timingmechanism replaces all need for mechanical timingunits. ADEM 4 maintains power even with changingfuel temperature; it allows for customizing enginespeed, switching control speed changes, andcontrolling idle levels. Speed control is establishedthrough ADEM 4 controlling the fuel input. The ADEM4 takes on the additional responsibility of ether andfuel-air ratio control, it protects the engine and theenvironment. ADEM 4 is one smart controller, whichincludes even more benefits of a remote shut downand is password protected.

ANALOG GAGECat Industrial offers a suite of round dial gages, alsoreferred to as Analog gages, that receive data fromelectronic control modules over the J1939 CAN datalink. The Cat J1939 gages operate on 12 and 24 voltsystems. Individual gages are available to displaycommon engine status and system information suchas engine speed, pressures, temperatures, fuel rate, and percent load. A liquid crystal display on thetachometer gage can display engine hours anddiagnostic codes. Each gage also offers two LEDindicators that alert the operator of problems with thesystem or data link communications. Most gages areoffered with 2 or 3 inch diameter dial and are easilyinstalled with thread nut mount and integral 6-pinDeutsch connector.

Internal memory allows the ECM to store diagnosticdata for later inspection by a technician. Thediagnostic recorder function records engine operationparameters for the time immediately preceding a fault, and it continues to record for a few seconds after thefault occurs. The service technician can then use theinformation to make a more informed diagnosis.

Taking Charge of Engine PerformanceVast amounts of data are constantly collected by theECM and transformed into valuable and usableinformation that can be monitored by the operator. Two engine monitoring systems are available: theComputerized Monitoring System (CMS), a vacuumfluorescent display that transmits all engineparameters over a two-wire system; and the EngineMonitoring System (EMS), which displays key engineand transmission parameters in both analog anddigital form. The EMS consists of multiple displaycomponents, offering excellent installation flexibility.

Cat 3500 engines (3508, 3512, and 3516) are thebest-selling power units of their size in the world. One reason is their design simplicity. We build themto be easy to install, maintain, and service.

Service Efficiency Reduces Operating CostsConsider service access. Two inspection openingsper cylinder make it easy to get at everything fromthe camshaft to the main bearings. Individualcylinder heads let you open up and work on asingle cylinder.

To minimize parts inventory and potential assemblyerrors, we build 3500 engines with many commonparts. For example, intake and exhaust valves, valve seat inserts, and valve springs are allidentical.

Superior Fuel EconomyCat 3500 engines incorporate several proven fuel-saving design features such as four-stroke cycledesign, unit fuel injectors and four valves percylinder. Additional savings are provided byperformance-matched turbochargers and charge-air cooling.

At the factory, we set individual scroll-type unitinjectors for consistent, precise fuel delivery toeach cylinder. Fuel is injected at 1240 bar (18 000psi) for superior atomization. And by producinginjection pressure at the cylinder, high-pressurefuel lines are eliminated.

In competitive testing, Cat 3500s are typically five to 15 percent more fuel efficient than other same-class engines. In one test that pitted a 3512 againstan identically rated competitive engine, the Catengine burned 6.5 percent less fuel. After 5000hours of operation, the 3512 would have saved 56800 liters (15 000 gallons) of fuel.

Savings at Repower TimeThe high efficiency of 3500s makes them a veryattractive repowering alternative. This is especiallytrue when you consider the cost of repairing andoverhauling an old, inefficient engine. Count on3500 engines to deliver higher production with lessfuel consumption.

3500B engines feature mechanical enhancementsand advanced electronic control systems thatcombine to offer significant improvements in fuelefficiency and emissions control, while increasinghorsepower ratings and improving responsiveness.

All ratings are optimized for fuel efficiency whilemeeting Tier 1/Stage I emissions. The ElectronicControl Module (ECM) controls the 3500B enginesby collecting operating condition information fromengine sensors, analyzing that information, andconstantly adjusting injection timing and duration tooptimize fuel efficiency and reduce emissions. Thislevel of control is also responsible for the engine’svirtually smokeless operation – even during startupand rapid acceleration.

Larger camshafts provide increased injectionpressure and shorter injection duration. New,electronically controlled unit injectors improve fuelatomization and injection timing pressure. A newdeep-crater piston design helps increaseturbulence in the combustion chamber for betterair/fuel mixing. Reduced crevice volume minimizeswasted charge air. Cooler aftercooler watertemperature and streamlined exhaust manifoldsalso contribute to engine efficiency.

Electronic AdvantageElectronic control provides engine protection. Threeprotection strategies – alarms, deratings, andshutdowns – are programmable by the equipmentoperator to help prevent serious downtimeincidents without interfering with safe machineryoperation. With the derating feature selected, theengine will automatically derate itself gradually insteps as little as 2-3 percent if it enters a dangerousoperating zone resulting from air inlet restriction, insufficient cooling, high exhaust temperature, overspeed, or any other cause. Automatic deratingdoes not occur if the operator reacts first to movethe engine out of the dangerous operating zone.

Since their introduction in 1985, 3600 engines (3606,3608, 3612, and 3616) have delivered more than fivemillion working hours in wide-ranging equipmentand industrial applications. Many customers arerepeat buyers, indicating that 3600 engines meetand exceed expectations.

Confidence to Run Harder and Work LongerAvailable in in-line 6- and 8-cylinder configurationsand V-12 and V-16 models, Cat 3600 engines featurea one-piece block casting of heavily ribbed, weldable gray iron. The intake plenum runs the fullengine length, providing even air distribution to thecylinders. The crankshaft is a press forging that isinduction hardened and regrindable. Bearings aresteel-backed aluminum with a copper-bonded,lead-tin overlay for longer life.

Cylinder liners are high alloy iron castings, water-jacketed over their entire length. Pistons are two-piece, with a steel crown for strength and analuminum skirt to reduce weight. Both cylinderliners and pistons are designed for 80 000 hoursusing No. 2 fuel.

Overall, 3600 engines are designed to run 40 000hours between major overhauls, and 20 000 hoursbetween minor overhauls using No. 2 fuel.

A New Standard for Fuel EfficiencyCat 3600 engines put 45 percent of the heatgenerated to work, a dramatic increase over theengineering “rule of thumb” of 30 percent. Brake-specific fuel consumption of the engine with twowater pumps, a fuel pump and an oil pump is as lowas 187 g/bkW-hour (0.307 lb/bhp-hour).

Performance Without Compromise . . . On Any FuelThe decision to use heavy-fuel-burning engines iscomplex and often difficult to make. But when youchoose a member of the Cat 3600 engine family, youcan count on thousands of hours of trouble-freeperformance and the lowest possible operatingcosts. That was the goal when Caterpillar beganresearch into heavy-fuel alternatives, and it remainsthe guiding principle today as Cat heavy-fuelengines work around the world.

Made Better by Design, Proven by ResearchIn addition to research into heavy-fuel performance,Caterpillar has conducted extensive research intothe characteristics of heavy fuel. By the time theengines went into production, we knew exactly howheavy fuel affected an engine’s performance anddurability.

We tested 3600 engine performance on fuels withviscosities up to 700 dSt (at 50° C), the consistencyof tar. To simulate the poorest commerciallyavailable fuel, we added 5 percent sulfur and 600ppm of vanadium. After 10 years and 80,000 hours oftesting distillate and heavy fuels, the Cat heavy-fuel-burning 3600 engines were ready for release.

State-Of-the-Art Componentry for Heavy Fuel UseThe following special components enhancecomponent life and enable these engines to runefficiently and economically on the heaviest fuelavailable.

• Fuel injectors optimized for high-viscosity fuel• Cooling for fuel injector nozzle tips• Flange-cooled cylinder liners• Ceramic-coated nimonic 80A exhaust valves• Water-cooled valve inserts• High mass flow turbochargers• Turbocharger water wash• Remote-mounted, heated fuel filter

Flexibility for the FutureBy substituting parts, typically at overhaul time, youcan convert 3600 engines from distillate to heavy-fuel configurations, and vice versa. The 3600 familyof engines can also burn crude oil, with engineratings dependent upon fuel characteristics.Generally, these ratings fall between those fordistillate and heavy fuel.

Clearing the Air About EmissionsAs concern for air quality grows, governments and municipalitieseverywhere are enacting new laws tocurb emissions from burning fossilfuels. This trend has made cleanerburning gas engines more attractive thanever before.

In some areas and applications, a regionalabundance of low-cost gases, coupled withthe inherent combustion efficiency ofgaseous fuels, make the economic benefitsof gas engines as attractive as their lowemissions.

Engineering That’s Ahead of Its TimeCaterpillar developed its first gas-poweredengines more than 50 years ago, leveragingthe quality engineering and manufacturing ofits diesel engines to produce equally highperformance and economy for a newsegment of the industrial market. Becausegas engines satisfy the need for emissioncontrol without sacrificing efficiency andeconomy, they have become the powersource of choice for more and more usersand applications.

You Choose the Most Economical FuelUnlike diesel fuel engines, Cat gas engines letyou choose the most economic gaseous fuel.Natural, field, landfill, and propane gas can allbe burned efficiently. Digester and othermanufactured gases, many of which are freeby-products of other processes, can also beused in some applications.

Meeting the Challenge of Lower EmissionsSpecific Cat gas engine packages currentlyachieve emissions within the limits set by theworld’s strictest air quality boards, includingthe United States, EPA, Europe’s TA Luft, andthe Environmental Agency of Japan.Achieving this level of performance requiresleaner combustion without sacrificing power. The open chamber design, available onengines through 1,340 bhp, was engineeredby Caterpillar to meet the challenge.

The larger G3600 family, along with speciallydesigned, gallery-cooled deep cup pistons forfast, efficient combustion, uses a state-of-the-art, electronically controlled pre-chamberdesign to obtain NOx levels as low as 0.5gr/bhp-hr.

Technical Advantages Make the EconomicsEven BetterNo matter what fuel you choose, Cat gasengines will get the most out of it. At the heartof the high performance of all Cat gas enginesthrough 1,340 bhp is a simple open-chamberdesign. This open-chamber combustion, alongwith the specially designed pistons, lowoverlap cams, and an air induction systemthat keeps the air-fuel mixture lean, serves toincrease power while minimizing NOx.

Electronic Controls for Reliability andEfficiencyThe Cat Electronic Ignition System (EIS) isspecifically designed to provide a highlyreliable and durable ignition system forindustrial engines. EIS employs state-of-the-art microprocessor technology to control keyparameters such as timing, detonationprotection, duel fuel switching, and varioustiming maps that enhance engineperformance. It also has built-in diagnosticsthat cover nearly every facet of the ignitionsystem.

To you, this advanced technology meansunbeatable reliability and fuel efficiency withwhatever gaseous fuel you choose.

Unbeatable VersatilityCat gas engine packages can be tailored toyour specific application or site-specificrequirements.

For example, special hardware andcomponents are available for landfillapplications and sites where only low-pressure gas supplies are available. Naturallyaspirated or turbocharged and aftercooledoptions allow you to match emissions anddependability requirements to your specificneeds. Cat gas engines are also ideal forcogeneration, chillers, air compressors, waterpumps, and a variety of industrial processes.

With operating ranges from 900 to 1800 rpm, you’ll find a comfortable match for anyequipment you need to drive.

Diesel Strength is Built InNo matter which model of Cat gas engine youchoose, you can rest assured that you willbenefit from the same legendaryperformance, economy and value that havebuilt on the Caterpillar worldwide reputation. One good example is the fact that Cat gasengines are built on diesel engine frames. That means greater reliability, lowermaintenance and repair costs, and longerservice life. Components such as blocks, crankshafts, heads, liners, and connectingrods are also common with Cat dieselengines.

A Choice of Aspiration MethodsAlthough emission regulations are increasingthe use of turbocharged and aftercooledengines, many still choose naturally aspiratedgas engines for their reliability and lowmaintenance characteristics. Lesssupervision makes it possible to operate Catgas engines in very remote areas of the world

with complete confidence.
