    TheCanadianCouncilofDirectorsofApprenticeship(CCDA)recognizesthisNational

    OccupationalAnalysisasthenationalstandardfortheoccupationofIndustrialElectrician.

    Background

    ThefirstNationalConferenceonApprenticeshipinTradesandIndustries,heldinOttawain1952,recommendedthatthefederalgovernmentberequestedtocooperatewithprovincialandterritorialapprenticeshipcommitteesandofficialsinpreparinganalysesofanumberofskilledoccupations.Tothisend,HumanResourcesandSkillsDevelopmentCanada(HRSDC)sponsorsaprogram,undertheguidanceoftheCCDA,todevelopaseriesofNationalOccupationalAnalyses(NOAs).

    TheNOAshavethefollowingobjectives:

    todescribeandgroupthetasksperformedbyskilledworkers;

    toidentifywhichtasksareperformedineveryprovinceandterritory;

    todevelopinstrumentsforuseinthepreparationofInterprovincialRedSealExaminationsandcurriculafortrainingleadingtothecertificationofskilledworkers;

    tofacilitatethemobilityofapprenticesandskilledworkersinCanada;and,

    tosupplyemployers,employees,associations,industries,traininginstitutionsandgovernmentswithanalysesofoccupations.

    Development of Analysis

    AdraftanalysisisdevelopedbyacommitteeofindustryexpertsinthefieldledbyateamoffacilitatorsfromHRSDC.Thisdraftanalysisbreaksdownallthetasksperformedintheoccupationanddescribestheknowledgeandabilitiesrequiredforatradespersontodemonstratecompetenceinthetrade.

    Draft Review

    TheNOAdevelopmentteamthenforwardsacopyoftheanalysisanditstranslationtoprovincialandterritorialauthoritiesforareviewofitscontentandstructure.Their

    recommendations

    are

    assessed

    and

    incorporated

    into

    the

    analysis.

    Validation and Weighting

    Theanalysisissenttoallprovincesandterritoriesforvalidationandweighting.Participatingjurisdictionsconsultwithindustrytovalidateandweightthedocument,examiningtheblocks,tasksandsubtasksoftheanalysisasfollows:

    Industrialelectriciansmustreadandinterpretprints,drawingsandcodespecificationsforlayoutandinstallationofelectricalequipment.Theyinstall,serviceandmaintainelectricalcomponentssuchaslightingfixtures,switches,conduitandelectricalcontrols.Theytestelectricalsystemsandcontinuityofcircuitsusingtestequipmenttoensuresystemsafetyandcompatibility.Theyconductpreventativeandpredictivemaintenanceprogramsandkeepmaintenancerecords.Someindustrialelectriciansspecializeinmaintenancefunctionsinareassuchashighvoltageandprocesscontrols.

    Industrialelectriciansmustpossessmanualdexterity,andgoodplanning,organizationalandcommunicationskills.Theyalsorequirestronganalytical,mathematicalandproblemsolvingskillsinordertoreadandinterpretschematics,drawingsandspecifications.Theyshouldhavegoodmechanicalaptitudetoinstall,troubleshootandrepairequipment.Theymustalsohavegoodvisionandhearing,theabilitytodistinguishcoloursandawillingnesstokeepupwithnewdevelopmentsinthetrade.

    Theworkenvironmentofindustrialelectricianscanexposethemtohazards.Theirworkisperformedindoorsoroutdoorsinextremeclimateconditions,andmaybeatvariableheightsorinconfinedspaces.Otheroccupationalrisksincludeelectricalshocks,arcflashes,falls,andinjuryfromliftingandkneeling.

    Thisanalysisrecognizessimilaritiesoroverlapswiththeworkofconstructionelectricians,powerlinetechnicians,instrumentationandcontroltechnicians,electricmotorsystemstechnicians,heating,ventilationandairconditioning(HVAC)technicians,telecommunicationstechniciansandindustrialmechanics(millwrights).Industrialelectriciansalsoworkwithprocessoperators,engineersandinspectors.

    Withexperience,industrialelectriciansmayactasmentorsandtrainerstoapprenticesinthetrade.Theymayalsoadvancetomanagerial,inspectionorteachingpositions.

    OCCUPATIONAL OBSERVATIONS

    Technologicaladvancementshavealteredthewayindustrialelectriciansperformtheirworkonadailybasis.Computersareincreasinglybeingusedforresearch,communication,programming,ordering,recordkeepinganddiagnostics.Testingequipmentisbecomingmore

    preciseanduserfriendlyallowingfortroubleshootingtobelesstimeconsuming.

    Inthemaintenanceofindustrialelectricalequipmentandsystems,inspectionisevolvingintoamorecriticalareaoffocus.Infact,inspectionisgainingmoreimportanceinassuringthehealthandsafetyofemployeesandthecontinuedsmoothandsafeoperationofmachineryandcomponents.

    Thecombinationofvariousfactorsinthepresenceofafaultmaycauseanarcflash,anextremeexplosion,whichcouldresultinseriousinjuryordeath.Injuriescausedbyarcflashhaveledtoheightenedsafetymeasures.Newpractices,procedures,safetyequipmentandjurisdictional

    regulationshavebeencreatedandimplementedinordertoaddresstheissue.

    Predictiveandpreventativemaintenanceprograms,usingcomputerizedmaintenancemanagementsystems(CMMSs),arebecomingmoreprevalentintheworkplace.Thesesystemshaveenhancedefficiencyandorganizationofthetasksrequiredformaintenanceofelectricalsystems.Theyalsocentralizeotherfunctionssuchastrends,componentordering,projectcontrol,history,costing,workhoursandtoolcribs.

    Programmablelogiccontrollers(PLCs)anddistributedcontrolsystems(DCSs)facilitatethemonitoringandcontrolofindustrialprocessesandbuildingcontrols.Thisequipmenthas

    become

    more

    user

    friendly

    and

    affordable.

    Smaller

    units

    are

    readily

    available

    for

    a

    variety

    ofapplications.

    Digitaltechnologyhasfacilitatedtheuseofnewcomponents,makingthetrackingofenergyusagemorereliableandefficient.Itissimplertoreplacemanyoftheoldpartsanddevicesnowthattheyaresmallerandavailableindigitalformat.

    Inmanysectorsofindustry,robotictechnologyisbeingutilized.Therefore,someindustrialelectriciansarenowrequiredtodevelopspecializedskillstokeepabreastofthisnewtechnology.

    Theworkloadforindustrialelectricianshasincreasedinprocesscontrol,environmentalcontrolandbuildingcontrolsystems.Thereisnowanincreasedemphasisonaccountabilityforsafetyintheworkplace.

    understandhowessentialskillsareusedinthetrades; learnaboutindividualessentialskillsstrengthsandareasforimprovement;and
