While on an exchange semester at Shih Chien University in Taipei, Taiwan I recognised that they have one of the best bike share schemes in the world. Unfortunately the roads and pathways are not always suitable for the public to ride the Ubike and people put themselves in dangerous situations. For my design project in Taipei I wanted to help the public be safer using the Ubikeand make their personal safety a priority on the streets of the city. Through research and inspiration I decided to design helmet that would be available to every member of the Ubike and would be sustainable, lightweight, waterproof, affordable and of course one the most important; stylish and innovative.

Portal was an internal university group project, spread out over the course of 5 weeks. The aim of the brief was to design a new archetype of televisions, trying to get away from the generic ‘black box’ that is prominent in today’s market. The idea behind Optic was inspired by the old televisions that were hidden away inside a cabinet, which then be presented like a show. The doors of the cabinet would be opened like curtains at the theatre to reveal the television. Optic has the same principle but instead of designing a television we designed a projector with a built in media streaming device, where you can choose what you want to watch. The projector would look like an ornament or feature of the room and when switched on it would reveal a projection onto the wall like a theatre. The interaction comes from the remote which fits snuggly onto the face of the lens. When the remote is removed, the projector turns on.

What is Optic?A high quality, media streaming, short throw projector to enhance your viewing experience and your home decor

- Allowing the customer to pick their preferred materials- Allows the user to fit a material which matches with their house- Materials can be chosen either in-store or online- 3 types of wood for the shell- 3 types of metal for the remote bezel

- Two types of instructions, one visual, one written- From the packaging opening, 4 basic graphics explain the concept of the interaction and how to use it.- Once the projector turns on, a visual animation shows how to use the remote alongside the interface

- Once the user has purchased their custom optic projector, a delivery service will deliver the projector between 1-2 working days - Customers will be able to track their package whilst the package is being assembled and delivered

- Since the bulb is always being used when the projector is on, an alert will pop on the screen when the bulb only has a few hours left before a new one will have to be fitted - The user will recieve a complimentary new bulb, which will be automatically dispatched

Since Optic is a high end purchase for the customer, a service should be created to make they purchasing experience as easy as possible for them. By giving the user the option of a material scheme gives an indication to the user that its a one o product, making it one of a kind

Gee-Kent Ho

Gee-Kent HoGee-Kent Ho hair salon is in Gateshead, Tyne & Wear. The salon has been chosen as the regional finalist for the L´Óreal colour trophy 2016. Fresh Space is a charity run organisation, which creates sensory rooms and uses nature to stimulate the minds of people living with dementia. Funded by the Alzheimer’s Society, this organisation brings a fresh, new, environment to dementia care homes.

Page 27: Industrial Design Portfolio

After we conducted research on dementia, we discovered that some herbs and aromas can cause different feelings and sensations in the body. We wanted to apply these smells to a sensory room. Certain smells can induce hunger, make the brain more active and make someone feel tired so in essence can simbolise the time of day for people who struggle to get through daily life.

After each day or when suffering from PTSD, you just turn on the lamp for 15 minutes and the pulsing light will help ease tension as it can have the same effects as a heartbeat.

TeaCup

Turbulance on a plane can be troublesome, even more so when you are trying to have a hot drink. The task from British Airways was to design a cup that would minimise spillage during turbulance. The final concept used food grade nylon to create a film to stop the liquid spilling out. The insert would go inside the cup and discarded after use.

Physical comfort is about having an Oasis where we can go and completely relax, let go of stress and problems and forget for a time about outside issues.

The Oasis toy box is an item of furniture which will grow with your child and become a cherished part of your home.

The toy box will transform to suit your childs needs as they get older, from a toy box in the early years to a comfortable Oasis where they can sit when toys are no longer needed.

PET CEMETERYPet cemetery was a project in which I had to imagine how a 6 year old child would relate to the death of a pet. The coffin I designed helps the child understand more about death by making a customisable carriage to say goodbye. The coffin is also educational as it teaches the child about the rituals of death in the country where the pet was from.
