Introduction to motor control and protection products
Contactor Basic concept: for remote connection and disjunction of circuit, frequent starting and control of motor and
other loads
Main applications: mainly used for controlling motors, and also used for controlling factory equipment,
electric heater, lights, various power units and other electrical loads
Thermal overload relay
Basic concept: provides multiple protections against overload, phase loss and interphase imbalance for
circuits and motors
Main applications: motor protection, and combination into motor starter with appropriate AC contactor
Contactor relay
Basic concept: also known as intermediate relay, used to transmit intermediate signals in the control circuit
Main applications: controls another channel or more channels of signals through one channel of control
signal; provides start, stop and linkage control; mainly used for controlling contractors
Motor circuit breaker
Basic concept: functionally replaces the combination of moulded case circuit breaker and thermal overload
relay
Main applications: provides isolation, short circuit, thermal overload and phase loss protections for small-
capacitor motors and circuits, and also used for switching the circuits that do not work frequently or for directly
starting the motor

Common problem analysis
Differences at coil supply frequency 50Hz or 60Hz
Problem in the contactor with 50Hz coil under 60Hz power supply:
Coil heating after long operating time, resulting in coil burnout
Problem in the contactor with 60Hz coil under 50Hz power supply:
Insufficient electromagnetic attraction, resulting in unreliable actuation
Differences between use classes AC-3 and AC-4
AC-4 is running under heavy load and AC-3 has relatively light load. In AC contactor
selection generally, the current selected under AC-4 is greater than that under AC-3, i.e.
running with less load.
For example: use HJX2-12 under AC-3 and use HJX2-25 under AC-4
AC-4 is generally used in severe service environment such as high operation frequency,
inching and positive and negative rotation.
For example: cement plant, tower crane and mine

Working principle of thermal overload relay
Principle: The thermoelement is connected in the main circuit and its current flows through the motor. In case of
motor overload, the bimetallic strip is heated to the operating temperature, so that the thermal relay acts, the
contactor control circuit is disconnected, the contactor coil is powered off and released and the main circuit is
disconnected.
