SOCCER A RELIGION IN BRAZIL

Brazilian Soccer History follows a parallel course to

that of Carnival in Brazil. Soccer and Carnival were

both born in Europe, both blossomed in Brazil's

tropical land and both became Brazilian masterpieces.

Art is one of the words used to describe Brazilian

Soccer, at least, by Brazilians themselves. But pride

aside, no other nation has produced more talented

players, more beautiful plays or more unforgettable

moments in a sport that excites and unites the world.

Soccer is almost a secular religion with its myths, rules

and revered heroes, often competing with religion

when games are played at the same time as church

services, say two Brazilian researchers

Trivia

Deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon

Cattle ranching is the leading cause of

deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon.

This has been the case since at least the

1970s: government figures attributed 38

percent of deforestation from 1966-1975

to large-scale cattle ranching. However,

today the situation may be even worse.

According to the Center for International

Forestry Research (CIFOR), "between 1990

and 2001 the percentage of Europe's

processed meat imports that came from

Brazil rose from 40 to 74 percent" and by

2003 "for the first time ever, the growth

in Brazilian cattle production - 80 percent

of which was in the Amazon—was largely

export driven."

Chili Peppers

Chili peppers have been a part of the human diet in the Americas since at least 7500 BC. There is archaeological evidence at sites located in Ecuador that chili peppers were domesticated more than 6000 years ago, and is one of the first cultivated crops in the Americas. Christopher Columbus was one of the first Europeans to encounter them, and called them "peppers" because of their similarity in taste with the Old World black peppers. From Mexico, at the time the Spanish colony that controlled commerce with Asia, chili peppers spread rapidly into the Philippines and then to India, China, Korea and Japan. They were quickly incorporated into local cuisines.

ORIGINS OF TANGO:

Ballroom Tango originated in the lower class of

Buenos Aires, especially in the "Bario de las Ranas".

The story of Tango as told is that it started with the

gauchos of Argentina. They wore chaps that had

hardened from the foam and sweat of horses. Hence

to gauchos walked with knees flexed. They would go

to the crowded night clubs and ask the local girls to

dance. Since the gaucho hadn't showered, the lady

would dance in the crook of the man's right arm,

holding her head back. Her right hand was held low

on his left hip, close to his pocket, looking for a

payment for dancing with him. The man danced in a

curving fashion because the floor was small with

round tables, so he danced around and between

them.
