Inexplicable Trajectory

Washington DC shyshy On April 22 2016 INDUS Mobilizing Peoples Powercollaborated with the Johns Hopkins SAIS South Asia Studies Department to hostrespected historian Dr Ayesha Jalal for a discussion with SAIS Dean Vali Nasr aboutethnoshyreligious identity in Pakistan The discussion touched on the influential roleindividual and community identities play in shaping Pakistani society the countryrsquosnational character and international perceptions Almost 70 years after Pakistan came into being Dr Jalal a professor at TuftsUniversity told the audience were still discussing issues of identity because theidentity crises of Pakistan exist at and emanate from the state level not from thepeoplerdquo In this way and others ldquoIndia is still defining the way Pakistan thinks about its pastpresent and futurerdquo The event Pakistans Search for Identity was wellshyattended by officers from theUS Department of State the Voice of America Urdu other news media outletsprominent members of the PakistanishyAmerican community academics and scholarsand students Dr Jalal said from a historical perspective the insistence that Pakistan was createdfor ldquoreligion onlyrdquo was false and served to ldquoblur the lines between worldly andreligious mattersrdquo The problems in Pakistan are not religious in nature but they canappear that way because religion is utilized by fringe groups for their own strategicgoalsrdquo Through the launch of ZarbshyeshyAzb Dr Jalal believed the military was trying tochange Pakistanrsquos internal dynamics with a counterinsurgencyshywithoutshycounterterrorism strategy She also addressed the recent hope that after years of dealing with extremism aSufi countershynarrative would emerge Instead Dr Jalal believed that Pakistan shouldlook toward its youth She was hopeful that the growing engagement and activism ofPakistani youth would positively affect the countryrsquos trajectory I have great faith inour youngsters she said When asked about the role and responsibility of Pakistanrsquos intellectuals to national

development Dr Jalal responded that instead the question should be ldquoWhat hasPakistan done to its intellectuals Independentshyminded Islamic scholars like FazlurRehman and Daud Rahbar have been weeded out and silenced People have todefine religion for themselves since Islam is not something which you blindly worshipbut rather something you practicerdquo She said that Pakistanis need to be more awareof and engaged in their religion but to approach it rationally and in the context oftheir secular selves The discussion continued on social media and Twitter with some attendees using thehashtag identityofPak The event concluded with a lively QampA session withaudience members directly engaging with both Dr Jalal and Dean Nasr about identityin Pakistan and in South Asia generally

When successful community integration and civic promotion begin with theindividual and then advance collectively usually through socialization withinformal groups and professional and cultural associations and withthe support of Federal State and municipal programs However due toregional organizational and programmatic differences the catalyticpotential of civil society organizations often goes underutilized Suchorganizations have the capability as well as a responsibility to enhance theprocess of community integration and identify supplemental methods andframeworks to advance government and nongovernmental efforts tointegrate new communities within American society
