What your child will need

Indoor and Outdoor shoes – Velcro fasteners

Coat – make sure they are able to put on and take off

Trousers – elasticated

Label all clothes – many get misplaced!

P.E. Gear for P.E. Day – Thursday each week children must wear runners

Uniform

Books should be covered books in contact, this saves them from any spills in the bag

Please write name on the front cover NOT on the inside.

Books and copies

Pencil – use a chunky one if needed – helps grip

Colours – crayons or colouring pencils

Rubber

Your child's first day at school

•BE STRONG!!

• If you feel emotional, try not to show it.

• Assure them that you’ll be back to collect them and make your getaway without delay!

• Your child will settle!

First two weeks of school life

• Junior Infants finish their school day at 12.00 pm

• During this time they will be introduced into the school

They are brought on a tour of the school (bathrooms, playground etc.)

They meet the other teachers

They get to know their classmates

They get to know the routines of being in a classroom – sitting in your seat, put up your hand when you have a

question, lunch time etc)

• Getting to know their classmates

• Developing fine motor skills

• Minimal homework – practice in developing fine motor skills at home is important

Please Note•PE is taught on Thursdays

•Arts and crafts are taught on Fridays for which your child will need an apron or an old t-shirt to protect their uniform

•Infants finish their school day at 1:30pm. They must be picked up inside the school grounds – you must come inside the gate

•If somebody unknown to the teacheris to collect your child pleaseinform the teacher

Homework10 - 15 mins per night

• Worksheet in textbook or photocopied page

• Phonics work wordbox (decoding),

reading book or

dictation book (identifying sounds in words)

• Sight words learning to recognise high frequency words

•In text books, the corner of the page will turned down

•“Your homework is not done unless it is coloured!”

•Sit with your child while doing homework – it’s ok to make mistakes!

•If for any reason homework cannot be done, please send in a note to explain

It would be helpful for your child to know how to:•Say some Nursery rhymes•Recognise some colours •Count up to 10•Take turns•Put on and take off their coat – practice this at home•Put on and take off their shoes•Go to the toilet unaided•Open their lunch box•Recognise their own name

General Information•Scoil Cholmcille has an open door policy, please feel free to pop in to talk to the class teacher after class. If the matter calls for it please arrange an appointment with the teacher

•If at some time you need to discuss a worry or complaint you may have, please contact the class teacher first to discuss the matter
