Program Highlights

This year the mood at the ICCC is upbeat and full ofanticipation. We have had increased participation frommembership at all our events and delegations. The wholeBoard and the various Committees have collectivelyworked hard in implementing our vision. Our BusinessCouncils in Ottawa and Montreal have been in step withus all the way.

One of our goals this year was to increase communi-cation with our members and we would like to thank youall for responding to our surveys and participating in ourfocus groups. We would like to take this opportunity tothank our sponsors without whose steady support wewould not be successful.

Yes, we work very hard with the membership inimplementing our mandate, but at the same time we havehad lots of fun in playing golf and cricket and raisingfunds for different causes. Last year’s Golf Tournaments inToronto and Montreal and the Cricket Tournament inToronto were a huge success. Every year we findincreased support from the members, be it a networkingevent or golf and in the coming year we look forward toyour support again.

This year is a special year for us. We are honoured andproud that for the first time in the history of this Chamber wehave our Prime Minister joining us at the Gala. We wouldlike to thank our Prime Minister Hon. Stephen Harper forhis decision to come and celebrate with us.

In the past our efforts were driven on charting newcourses and connecting people. This year we have focusedon “Tapping Roots and Seizing New Opportunities” for ourmembers and alliance partners. Once again we reiterateour pledge to be your Partners in Success.

TAPPING ROOTS SEIZING OPPORTUNITIES

The past 12 months have been verychallenging for your entire board butat the same time they have been veryfruitful for all of us.

The first year of any “new” job has avery steep learning curve. My role inthe ICCC was just that – a new job!The year was rewarding, verydemanding, extremely enriching andmost importantly, it was an invaluablelearning experience for me. I thankthe entire membership for giving methe opportunity to serve you and forthe confidence you bestowed on me.

The board and the various committeesfeel proud of what was accomplished. Our success was largely derived byacting on the advice received from ourmembers, community leaders, govern-ment contacts and well wishers.Thank you so much and please docontinue to give us your “two centsworth”. We truly appreciate it.

VisionOur goal was to remain focused onselected priorities. It is gratifying tonote that we did indeed focus ourenergies on the three areas identifiedin my 100 day report. They were:

1) Facilitate trade between Canadaand India with support providedto and received from various levels of government

2) Increase the business networkingopportunities for our members, our sponsors and our partners &

3) Showcase the talent of our community.

In addition, we undertook to raise theawareness of the Foreign CredentialsRecognition issue and have workedwith various levels of governmentand with professional and education-al organizations to develop a workingdocument to move forward with.

TeamworkChange is the only constant in today'sworld. We kept pace with change. The new team developed new initia-tives, new committees and workedcollaboratively through the variousinitiatives. In any organization it isimperative to have a knowledge sharing mechanism. The above stylehas given us incredible strengththrough the leveraging of a greaternumber of our members than everbefore and learning from their expertise. They too felt this to be anenriching experience.

In order to move the organization forward and for everyone to under-stand our principles, we linked ourvision to the three pillars – Grow,Engage, and Prosper. Our strategieswere linked to these 3 core values.

Quite simply they are defined asbelow:Grow – To accomplish sustainedmembership and funding growth

Engage – Enhance the value of ICCCmembership and increase retentionof members and sponsors

Prosper – Promote/Foster interna-tional trade between Canada andIndia and the rest of the world andforge global alliances therebybringing prosperity to our members, sponsors and the Chamber.

ICCC has indeed enhanced its “GoTo” position in the business world. Inorder to keep pace with the demandsof such a mandate, we intend torecruit an Executive Director to concentrate on the Canada-Indiacorridor and advocacy. The timingwas never better and we must moveforward with this initiative if we areto Tap our roots and Seize the oppor-tunities available.

I am proud that we have the multi-city protocol in place. This will givethe existing councils – Montreal andOttawa – more autonomy andencouragement to grow. It will alsoincent other cities like Calgary,Vancouver and Winnipeg to join theICCC. Support provided to thesecouncils will be invaluable for themto grow and make ICCC a coast tocoast Canadian organization.

CommunicationTwo way communication is the key tosuccess in an organization such asours. The fortnightly EBulletinlaunched last year has been wellreceived and gives us the chance toinform our membership about the‘goings on’ at the Chamber. We haverecently conducted focus groups ofour members to ensure we remainrelevant to their needs. In additionwe sent out a web based survey whichhad a response rate that far exceededour expectations. Comments werevery positive and we are encouragedwith your responses and the timemany of you took to write comments.

In order for our members to attendmore of our events and block time ontheir busy calendars, we undertook tofix the 2nd Wednesday of everymonth as the event night. Montrealand Ottawa are considering similarinitiatives. We have even better ideasfor this NETWORKING night fornext year. Please mark your calendars now. Finally, our websitecontinues to be enhanced. Variousnew features have been added.Others are forthcoming including aMembers Only site within it.

EventsOur events were well attended andwhether it was in Ottawa,Mississauga, Montreal, Hyderabad,New Delhi or Toronto, the feedbackreceived through the surveys youcompleted indicates that we aremeeting your expectations. Any sug-gestions are being incorporated intoour future events.

Last year we initiated some jointevents with other organizations suchas Asia Pacific Foundation withwhom we did a round table on “India2020 and Canada-India Relations”.We hosted a reception at the signingof the NASSCOM-ITAC MOU. We

hosted sessions in Montreal andToronto with the Engineering ExportPromotion Council (EEPC) and theHigh Commission/Consul General ofIndia for a strong manufacturing delegation from India and facilitatedone on one meetings with theircounter parts in Canada – a trulyvalue added service. A “doing busi-ness with Quebec” seminar was heldin conjunction with CII in Montreal.

SME’s are vitally important to thetwo countries and to ICCC. Eventswere scheduled with that segment inmind. Events included topics suchas “Kickoff to a new career”,“Business succession planning”,“Low cost and No cost marketingtools” among others. Other commit-tees such as Trade and YoungProfessionals also catered to theirsegments by scheduling relevantseminars and networking opportuni-ties. Our membership base is asdiverse as India is! Our appeal tothe younger and newer membershipis growing and so are our efforts tokeep all segments engaged.

CorridorICCC has continued to lead delega-tions to India on the occasion ofPravasi Bharatiya Divas. LastJanuary, in Hyderabad, ICCC organized a Roundtable discussionon the theme of “Diaspora: Trade,Technology and Education Links” inconjunction with the Indo CanadianBusiness Council. We also attendedthe Tech Summit in New Delhi inSeptember 2005 featuring Canada as the sole partner country for the summit. The Summit was organizedby Confederation of Indian Industrieswith whom ICCC has a partnershipbased on a wide-ranging M.O.U. Itwas here that an invitation was givento Minister Sibal to come to Canadato sign the S&T agreement whichICCC’s S&T committee helpedauthor. The agreement was signed by

Min. Sibal and Min Peterson and alunch was hosted by ICCC immedi-ately after the event.

In addition, we are continuing to par-ticipate in the Focus India meetingsand have recently proposed to thisbody that one of our key goals shouldbe to work towards efforts to encour-age India to name Canada as one ofits priority nations – similar to whatCanada has done with respect toIndia. Working with DFAIT will be atop priority for us.

Bridging the potential between thetwo countries will be our mandate aswe move forward. India is indeedEVERYWHERE. We must capital-ize on this huge business opportunityby maintaining and increasing ourfocus on the trade between the twocountries. The theme for our annualawards gala this year is appropriatelyselected as “Tapping Roots – SeizingOpportunities”. Indo Canadians, with their growing political voice andwith their contacts in India can play asignificant role in branding Canadain India. We will pro-actively supporttheir initiatives with the help of theoffices of the High Commission ofIndia and with the Canadian HighCommission in India.

We are elated that Prime MinisterStephen Harper will be our ChiefGuest at this trade mark event – afirst for our organization.

I look forward to seeing you on the10th of June. Thank you again foryour incredible support. It is mostappreciated. Together we will grow toeven greater heights and prominence.

Regards,

MESSAGE ON THE 29TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE INDO-CANADA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE: JUNE 10, 2006

On the 29th anniversary of the founding of the Indo-Canada Chamber of Commerce, I would like to congratulate all its members on the ICCC’s effectivework, since 1977, to serve as a bridge between the Indo-Canadian community andthe Canadian government and business establishment. The Chamber’s success inthis regard reflects and reinforces the striking achievements of the Indo-Canadi-an community as a whole.

In recent years, the ICCC has extended its goals to include the strengthening of trade and investment ties between India and Canada. This would be of directbenefit not only to India, but also to Canadian businesses, by helping themleverage the numerous openings offered by India’s booming high-tech sector toimprove their competitive edge, both domestic and global. Such cooperationbetween Canadian business and industry and India could include BPO, R&Dand tech-related manufacturing, as also a hitherto unexplored angle, joint projects in third countries.

While the global business majors have been quick to spot and to benefit from theIndia Advantage, Canada Inc. is yet to move decisively down this path, perhapsdue to an information gap. Organizations like the ICCC should and undoubtedlywill strive to bridge this gap, in tandem with the efforts of both the governments.I wish them all success in this endeavour, in which I would like to assure them ofour full support.

Yet another year passes in the annals of the ICCC history.

Yet another year when willing hands carry the torch forward,

before passing it on to other willing hands.

Where the year that passed was one of connecting people and charting new courses,

the year coming up promises to hold forth much more.

How it AllBegan

How it AllBegan

In 1991 when Ajit Someshwar became the president of ICCChe felt that the profile of the average Indo-Canadian on thestreet did not match with the community’s achievement andgrowing stature. Early in February 1992 while walking acrossKing St in downtown Toronto to his office he had a ‘eureka’moment. He knew that what the Indo-Canadian communityneeded was an Annual Awards program to recognize their distinguished contributions to Canada. By the time he hadreached the other side of the street, he had made up his mindto do it. He walked over to the St. Lawrence Hall immediatelyand quickly booked two dates.

That was 1992, and today the “Annual Awards and GalaNight” are a highlight of the year. Today Ajit, CEO & President of CSI Consulting is very proud of his “Eurekamoment”.

Ever since then every ICCC President and the AdvisoryBoards have worked relentlessly in going out and reaching outto all Indo-Canadians who have worked hard in their chosenfield. The “Annual Gala and Awards Night” is the celebrationand recognition of these hard working leaders and the community at large. This event has grown larger every yearand today we are proud that for the first time in the history ofthis Chamber that the Prime Minister, Hon. Stephen Harperhas come in person to join us in this celebration.
