What to Bring to the Meeting:
Night of 5000…All that JAZZ!Night of 5000…All that JAZZ!Night of 5000…All that JAZZ!Night of 5000…All that JAZZ!
To the members of The GFWC New Tampa Junior
Woman’s Club:
For sixteen years the members of the GFWC NTJWC
have been celebrating our commitment to the
surrounding community with our signature event, Night
of 5000. We are a strong woman’s organization that
strives to improve the lives of those around us through
volunteer activities, fundraising events, and educational
awareness.
On March 2, 2013, the GFWC New Tampa Junior Woman’s Club will host our sixteenth annual Night
of 5000 charity event, which has been our signature fundraiser since the club was chartered. This
event does not happen all by itself. It takes the “Club Community” to make this event the signature
event that we are known for in the New Tampa area.
Information regarding the proud legacy of your organization is included in this article so that you may
begin talking about the event to your business contacts and friends. All forms are already on our
website for you to download to assist with ticket sales, donations and sponsorship opportunities.
This year’s theme, All that JAZZ, promises to be an evening to remember. This semi-formal evening
will be held at the Embassy Suites on Fowler Avenue. Guests to this popular New Tampa community
event will be invited to socialize, dine to a plated dinner, bid on live and silent auction items, have fun
at the casino tables, and dance the night away.
The GFWC New Tampa Junior Woman’s Club is proud to
announce that one of the beneficiaries for the Night of 5000
is the Resources in Community Hope (R.I.C.H.) House
in Tampa’s Sulfur Springs neighborhood. The R.I.C.H.
House was formed in 2000. The main objective is to weed
out the element that is holding a neighborhood back, be it
criminal or economic, and seed in elements that will allow
the neighborhood to prosper even when those funds are
gone. This video link shows how the children of the
R.I.C.H. volunteer in their own community,

At our next meeting, please come “armed” with sponsorship
hopefuls, reserved seating prospects, and businesses
willing to donate. We will also have on hand packets for you to bring to past donors and sponsors. We
need each of you to commit to at least one aspect of the event.
Please contact me, Michele Small or Carmela Johnson with any questions you may have concerning
Night of 5000.
Let’s get focused on the success of this major fundraising event for our club….and ALL that JAZZ!

What it is all What it is all What it is all What it is all about…about…about…about…
The GFWC New Tampa Junior Woman’s Club (NTJWC) was founded in 1997 and is a member of the
General Federation of Women’s Clubs (GFWC), the largest and oldest women’s volunteer organization
in the world. Our club, one of 8,500 in the world, has approximately 100 members. There are 415
federated clubs in Florida, including the surrounding areas of Temple Terrace, Brandon, Lutz-Pasco,
South Tampa, and Clearwater/St. Petersburg.
The mission of our club is to respond to the needs of our community and nation. We have helped
numerous local and national organizations.
Through six community service program areas --- arts, conservation, education, home life, international
outreach and public issues --- we offer our time and talents through such projects as:
UNICEF World Food Day Special Santa
Dr. Seuss’s Birthday Operation Smile Dress for Success
EMSC - Blue Bears Great American Teach-In Project Easter Bunny
I Will Inspire 5K Race Fire Safety & Community Awareness Day
Relay for Life Teacher Appreciation Day @ Mort Elementary
In 2011, more than 8,000 volunteer hours and $25,000 was donated and over $13,000 in-kind donations
to charities because of the efforts of the GFWC New Tampa Junior Woman’s Club. Our club has
consistently been the largest GFWC Florida Junior Club in the State and has cultivated numerous
leaders on the GFWC Florida Board of Directors.
• About the Night of 5000 Gala Event – March 2, 2013
This is the sixteenth year that the GFWC New Tampa Junior Woman’s Club will host this event.
During Night of 5000, “All that JAZZ”, guests bid on live and silent auction items, “play” at casino
tables with “Mock” Federation Funds, and enjoy live entertainment, and dance to the music of Gigante’
Productions.
The success of last year’s event raised $35,000 for local charities, including Tampa’s Fisher House.
Night of 5000 has attracted local politicians and sports personalities.
This year’s event is expected to be the best ever. To accommodate our guests, we have moved the Night
of 5000 to the “front door” of New Tampa --- the beautiful Embassy Suites on Fowler Avenue.
• About the Tampa Police Department, Resources in Community Hope (R.I.C.H. House)
The R.I.C.H. House was formed in 2000 when the Tampa Police Department partnered with
the U.S. Attorney's Office under a grant known as the Weed and Seed Initiative. The main
objective is to weed out the element that is holding a neighborhood back, be it criminal or
economic, and seed in elements that will allow the neighborhood to prosper even when
those funds are gone.
The R.I.C.H. House is a local safe house in the Sulfur Springs area operated by the Tampa Police
Department. It’s a place where kids can go afer school to study and learn instead of being left on the
streets to be targeted by gangs. To view this past summer’s camp graduates activities, visit

Hi Ladies!
I went to the Juniorette (middle and high school volunteer group we sponsor)
meeting on Monday and they had an officer there to speak to them about
safety and teen issues. I spoke to Officer Brown before the meeting and she
told me she had checked out the GFWC website, GFWC Florida website and
our New Tampa Junior website before coming to the meeting to find out
what our organization is all about. She got caught up learning about our
history and spent over an hour on the websites! She knew facts about GFWC
that I don't even know. Sometimes we forget just how special and amazing GFWC is so take
the time to check out GFWC.org and remind yourselves what we're all about!
Here is a glimpse into what you can learn on the website:
Symbolism of GFWC Emblem
GFWC’s emblem depicts a circular band signifying eternity. In the
center of the circular band, the crusader's shield emerges from a
darkened world (represented by the field of darkness), which
represents enlightenment. The enameled colors—red, white, and
blue—are the colors of the United States of America. The red implies
courage, the white equals purity, and the blue stands for constancy.
Please be sure to 'like' our Facebook page if you have not done so already! We
put information about upcoming events, meetings and fundraisers. Feel free to
invite your friends, family and neighbors to 'like' our page as well. This way
they can see all the great stuff we do and they may want to get involved with
our upcoming 5K or our upcoming Night of 5000. Be sure to check the page
regularly for updates!
New Tampa Juniorettes
Who are the Juniorettes? We are a group of girls aged 12-18 years old and we are sponsored by
your club! We love to help with your club's projects and we do some projects on our own too! If
you know anyone interested in joining us then please have them contact the adviser Kathy
Korver, [email protected]. This is a great way to earn volunteer hours for scholarships and
school clubs! If you'd like to help Mrs. Kathy at our meetings and projects, contact her because
she'd love the extra help and all the volunteer hours you do with us, count toward your Juniors
volunteer hours.

Let all your friends who love jewelry
know that they can shop between
now and the end of the year at
www.stelladot.com/candicemelton
and enter NTJWC Fundraiser as the
hostess. Twenty percent of all sales
will come back to the club's admin
budget. Additionally the club will
earn free jewelry for being the hostess. The jewelry
earned will be used at the NO5000 silent auction.
There is a Facebook event on the club's Facebook
page that you can invite all your friends, family and
co-workers to join. I post pictures of the jewelry and
current specials and sales every couple of days. You
can get your holiday shopping done while helping
the club. The best part is that Stella & Dot now offers gift cards. You can buy them on the
website to send electronically or you can buy a physical gift card from me at the meeting.
The gift cards make great gifts and the club gets 20% so it's a great opportunity to help the
club and get your holiday shopping complete.
VP of Public Relations, Kasandrea Sereno
Branding, reputation, marketing, public relations.
What do these things have in common? YOU! You are
the face of our club and often times are the first
impression someone new has of the organization. You
can help us promote New Tampa Juniors with just a
few easy steps;
1) Have you met any ladies lately that you think
would be a good member? Remember recruitment and
networking never take a day off. Tis the season for holiday parties,
mixers, and fun events so if you meet a great local woman invite them to the next meeting
or one of our events.
2) Give us a social media shout out! Have a Facebook? Be sure to "like" the club page to
keep up with events and other members. Its super easy to share and promote events to
your friends, and can be a great way to get some word of mouth advertizing and
promotion.
3) Rep your letters! Do you have any Juniors swag that you wear? If not, be sure to order
an iron-ons from the Juniorettes, grab a cute tee and get to work! When you wear the
Juniors name it reinforces the connection between you as a member and the organization
and gets our name out there even more. Plus its a great conversation starter! You never
know who will notice your letters.
4) Do you have any connections that might be beneficial to the group? Feel free to send
them in to me [email protected]
Think of how many people you come in contact with everyday. Anytime you mention the
club or the service activities you are participating they are making the connection between
you and the organization. We are an amazing group of women, and let's make sure
everyone knows it! Be on the look out; In the coming months we will be resurrecting the
club blog, twitter, and Linked-In groups, as well as getting networking cards for every
member to carry.
Special Santa, Ginny Fleming

Item list:
• Pair of school shoes
• Pants
• Shirts
• Small umbrella
• Two toys
• One or more books
• One thing off the family needs list
If you have any questions please call me at 813-695-6219 or email me at
Thank you,
Ginny
Did anyone make a one-time $10 donation to UNICEF by texting the word “TOT”
to 864233?!? Or maybe you or someone you recruited decided to participate in the
Great American Teach-In at Mort Elementary School?!? If so, please let me know
so that your participation can be included in reports.
Also, has anyone heard of Kiva?!? This FABULOUS non-
profit organization believes that low-income individuals are
capable of lifting themselves out of poverty if given access to
appropriate financial services. Most of Kiva’s clients live in
remote areas of the world where formal banking options are either a) not
available; or b) have requirements that they just can’t meet (like a savings
account with a $1,000 minimum balance). Therefore Kiva serves as the
bridge between low-income entrepreneurs and individuals (like you and me)
or groups (like Juniors) who are interested in helping alleviate poverty. This
year the NTJWC finance committee budgeted $50 of International Outreach funds to make two $25
Kiva loans (yes, a loan starts at only $25!).
The first went to Badamtsetseg, a wife and mother of three from Mongolia. Badamtsetseg has been
working as a saleswoman since 2007, and has built strong relationships with her customers and
suppliers. She is now planning to open her own clothing retail business, but lacks the necessary
start-up funds to do so. She is hoping a Kiva loan will make her dream of being a small business
owner a reality.
The second loan went to Hector, a 67-year-old man from Columbia who runs his own fruit and
vegetable stand. Hector’s greatest wish is to provide his wife and children with a better quality of
life, but in order to make this happen he must increase his sales. He states that his greatest
obstacle is not having the variety of products his customers frequently request. He is seeking a
Kiva loan to help him finance more stock and increase sales.
So how were we able to connect with these two individuals from the other side of the world? It was
super easy!! In about 15 minutes, I was able to create an account on kiva.org, search for a borrower
of my choice (complete with photo’s and information on their background and loan pay back
history), and make a donation for both loans via the club’s PayPal account. And to top it all off…
Kiva won’t even use any of this money for their operating expenses. In fact, they will return the
loan in its entirety over the next 1 to 2 years as each borrower works to pay it off. We will continue
to receive updates on Badamtsetseg’s and Hector’s progress, and dollar by dollar will slowly be
deposited back into our Kiva.org account. Once the full $25 for each borrower is returned, we’ll
then have the option to re-loan to another individual in need, or withdraw the money for deposit
back into our checking account. Isn’t that cool?!?
I was so impressed by Kiva a few years ago that I decided to forgo the stress of searching for the
perfect gift for family and friends and instead got them a Kiva loan. For my husband’s Aunt Lisa
who is the family cook, I loaned money to a woman in Mexico who needed a new stove for her local
restaurant; and for Uncle Bobby, a long time mechanic, I found a man on the other side of the
world who also had a love for fixing cars but not enough money to purchase the necessary tools to
run his business efficiently. These gifts literally had the recipients crying. For others I chose to
purchase them a Kiva.org gift certificate, so that they could choose and monitor their own recipient.
This was especially popular among nieces and nephews who loved keeping track of their loans on-
line, but also looked forward to the cash pay-back down the road. So I hope that you too will
consider making a Kiva loan this holiday season. Either as a gift to honor a loved one or just as
your own way to give back, this organization makes international outreach a cinch! And if you
decide to support Kiva, please let me know. I’ll keep a running tally of how many Junior’s
participate to include in our project report, and you’ll earn an hour of community service for each
$25 loan made. So skip the Christmas shopping, help a person in-need, and earn a Junior hour in
less than 15 minutes – WOW – you can’t beat that! Happy Holidays!

Treasurer & International Outreach Chair, Margaret Andrade
Hi ladies, happy holidays!
As November was the
month to be thankful, I just
want to thank all of you for
supporting our fundraising
efforts this year. We set a
goal earlier this year of
$3,000 in fundraising for
o u r
administrative budget and
we are well on our way to
achieving this goal. The
Honey Baked Hams
fundraiser was an excellent
idea that came from one of
our board members and
helped us to raise over $200.
Now, we turn our focus to Drag Queen
Bingo at Hamburger Mary's on Monday,
December 17 at 7:30 PM. I recommend
arriving by 7:15 PM to
obtain your bingo cards,
order food and drinks
a n d s e t t l e i n .
Remember, you must
pay for your bingo
cards in CASH so
please bring $10 with
you. This buys you 10
cards and 10 chances to
win. If you are so
inspired, feel free to play two cards at once!
We will also have a 50/50 raffle taking place
that night so bring additional cash to
contribute to this fundraising effort as well.
Invite your friends and family to come to this
one of a kind experience, it's guaranteed to be
a good time!! Respond to the evite to ensure
you have reservations for the evening or you
are welcome to make your own for your
group.

If you are training for our I Will Inspire Race or looking to get into
better health, please track your mileage starting today for next
meeting. As a club, we are going to travel across the US with our
mileage (minutes of activity) as we improve our health, train, or
continue our normal exercise routines. Look for more information at
next meeting.
It’s the holiday season and your home life could not be more important than
it is now. While we take the time to enrich our own lives, it is important that
we turn our attention to our community’s home life needs. This year are
making donations to a few good causes that are our partners through GFWC.
We will be making a donation to Canine Companions for
Independence to assist them in training service dogs. The
Canine Companions go through a breeding program and then are
placed with volunteer puppy raises who raise them for 15
months. They are always in need of volunteers and more

OASIS News
OASIS Network is a grassroots, volunteer-driven organization, serving
underprivileged children in Hillsborough County since 2001. This is possible
through a unique partnership with the Hillsborough County School District's
social workers.
Our mission is to provide basic necessities to needy students in Hillsborough
County public schools.
OASIS is currently in need of school appropriate clothing for kids of all ages, including gently- used socks
and underwear for elementary schools’ nurses stations. This time of year they are also in need of
sweaters, sweatshirts, and jackets.
OASIS is now selling clothing that is stained or in poor condition to a recycler (who mostly sells it to 3rd
world countries) and using the proceeds to purchase things that they need, such as socks, underwear
and toiletries. There’s not much for which they don’t find a home!
Please bring in any donation of clothing to the December Meeting!
Thank you, Stephanie Squires

Another partner that the Juniors will support this year is the Easter Seals
of Tampa Bay. Easter Seals provide assistance to those who have special
needs in the community to ensure that everyone has opportunities to live,
learn, work, and play. They are always looking for volunteers and
donations to support the community. More information will be at the

The Osteoporosis Foundation will also receive a donation to support their
Generations of Strength campaign. This campaign encourages mothers,
daughters, and their families to start talking with their health care providers
about bone health and exercise. See this website for further information.
http://www.nof.org/
Health Tip of the Month: Keeping in line with our partners, this tip of the month is about
preventing osteoporosis. Osteoporosis literally means porous bones with bone density more
than 2.5 standard deviations below normal for gender. This affects about 10 million US
residents. 50%of women eventually develop osteoporosis. Avoidable risk factors include
smoking, high caffeine intake, calcium deficient diet, vitamin D deficiency (sun or diet
provides), and a sedentary lifestyle. Proper diet with adequate Calcium combined with
Vitamin D, weight bearing exercise such as weight lifting or walking/running 3-5 days a
week. No matter what age, or if you already have osteopenia/osteoporosis, these factors will
improve your bone mass. 1
