HISTORICAL SKETCH
Soon after the invention of photography in 1839, photographers began to create panoramic views of cities and landscapes. These early panoramas were made by placing daguerreotype plates side-by-side. Later during the 1860s panoramas were printed from two or more wet-plate glass negatives taken with conventional cameras. After each exposure, the photographer rotated the camera to take the next exposure on a new negative. Back in the studio, a print was made from each negative. The prints were then fixed, washed, trimmed, and mounted side by side to form a panoramic photograph. The edges of these separately mounted prints, can be seen in the finished photograph.
Late in the nineteenth century, companies began to manufacture several types of cameras to produce panoramas for both professional and amateur photographers. For the amateurs these early mass-produced panoramic cameras made small panoramas that measured no more than twelve inches long with a field of view of almost 180-degrees. Developing the film was easy, and the resulting negatives could be contact-printed or used for enlargements.
The Cirkut camera was patented in 1904. It used large format film, ranging in width from 5 to 16 inches and could produce a 360-degree photograph that could measure up to 20 feet long. Both the camera and the film rotated on a special tripod during the exposure. Cirkut cameras were used mostly by commercial photographers for city views, group portraits, and special events.
Many panoramic photograph images appear distorted. This is noticed with street scenes where the camera is at an intersection and streets that are parallel with the camera appear curved. This distortion occurs as the distance between the lens and the subject changes.
Panoramic photography continues today as photographers use traditional panoramic cameras and modern highly engineered models.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
The collection consists of some early segmented panoramic photographs, and images made with Cirkut cameras. Most of the images were made by professional photographers. It is likely that the smaller images were made by amateurs.
Because of the various sizes of the photographs they are stored in hanging files and flat files, OVA, OVB, and OVC boxes, and Rolled Storage.
The processor arranged the photographs into three series. Each series is in chronological order and whenever possible lists the caption, photographer, size of the image, a brief description, location of the event, and the date or year. The storage location of each image is listed along with the scanned image number.
Series 1: Indiana Panoramic Photographs, 1897–1993, contains events that are identified as having occurred in Indiana.
Series 2: Non Indiana Panoramic Photographs, 1909–1950, contains images of events that occurred outside of Indiana but were either taken by Hoosier photographers or show groups or events that were attended by Hoosiers or have an Indiana connection.
Series 3: Military Groups and Veterans, 1906–ca. 1950 consists of early views of the Indiana National Guard at Fort Benjamin Harrison, soldiers and sailors during the World War I and World War II, military parades, and veterans groups.
