Dr. Frank Tracz is Professor of Mu. ic and Director of Bands at Kansa State University in Manhattan. Kansas. At K-State he coordinates the undergraduate and graduate conducting programs. teaches classes in rou. ic education. and administers and guides all aspects of the K- tate band program, which includes the Symphony Band, Concert Band, University Band. Athletic Pep Bands. and Marching Band. Under his direction, the Symphony Band ha: performed at the Kansas Music Educator A. sociation Conference, the ME C Conference a' well as regional and international tour:. The "Pride of Wildcat Land" Marching Band has enjoyed the privilege of traveling to nationally acclaimed bowl game: in SUppOfl of the University.

Dr. Tracz received the Doctor of Philosophy (music education) from The Ohio State University. a Master of Mu. ic degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and a Bachelor of Mu, ic Education degree from The Ohio State University. Dr. Tracz has sev ral ars experience teaching in the public school. of Ohio and Wi:consin. He has also served as As. istant Director of Bands at Syracuse University. Pri I' to his appointment at K-Stat , he was the Director of Band' at Morehead State University in Morehead. Kentucky.

Dr. Trac? is a past member of the Mu. ic Education Journal Editorial Board and is a contributor to the series Teaching Music Through Perfonnance in Band, He also re:earched and developed a Master of Music Education/Band Conducting program tbat i. now in place at K-State. In addition to being an inducted member of the Golden Key National Honor Society, he is a member of Pi Kappa Lambda, Phi Beta Mu, and Pi Lambda Theta. He clln"emly serves as tbe advi. or [or the Kansa. State chapters of Kappa Kappa Psi, Tau Beta Sigma and the K-State Band Ambas adors. Dr. Tracz is past President o[ the Big Xli Band Directors Association, past­President of the Kansas Bandmaster. As. oeiation, and Director of the Manhattan Municipal Band.

Dr. Tracz has received many awards and recognition. At K-State, he ha been honored with the prestigious Stamey award for Outstanding Teaching. and recognized a. a Mortar Board Outstanding Faculty Member, and participate in tbe K-State Presidential Lecture Series. Most r cently, he wa' honored with the Outstanding Bandmaster Award from the Kansa<; Bandmasters Association and Phi Beta Mu.

Dr. Lowell E. Graham

A native of Greeley, Colorado, Lowell E. Graham is the Chairman of the Music Department allhe University of Texa at EI Pa.o and is th recipient the '"Abraham Chavez" Professorship in Music. He enjoys a di. tinguished career conducting en emble. in many musical media, including the Green Bay Symphony Orche lra. the Virginia Symphony. the Spokane Symphony. the El Paso Symphony Orchestra, th American Promenade Orchestra, lhe Greeley Philharmonic, Chamber Music Palm Beach Chamber Orchestra, the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, Banda Sinfonica do Estado de Sao Paulo, Orquestra de Sopros Bra ileira, the National Symphonic Winds, the National Chamber Players, the Avatar Brass Ensemble and the Denver Bra s. In 2006, he was named the "Director Honorifi 0 Anual" for the Orquesta Sinfonica acional de Paraguay. He has held

numerous conducting positions Lo include that of the Commander and Conductor of the United States Air Force's premier mu, ical organization in Washington. DC. While there. he became the. enior ranking musician in the Department of Defense.

He is a graduate of the University of Northern Colorado where he received a Bachelor' of Arts degre in music education in 1970 and a Ma, ter of Arts dt:gree in performance the following year. In 1977 he became the first person to be awarded the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in orchestql conducting from The Catholic Uni ersity of America in Washington, D.C.

Graham has initiated many important media project. for American Public Radio and other broadca, ting organizations. as well as live teleca, tlweb ca t concerts and video productions on which his credits include those of conductor. writer and musical producer. He is a frequent guest on radio talk shows and performed on NBC s "Today Show" for five consecutive year. on Independence Day.

In March 1995, he was honored with membership in the prestigious American Bandmasters A ociation, the professional association of master conductor. and mu icians. Member hip i, considered the highest honor achievable by American bandsmen; iL recognized out. tanding achievement in the field of concert bands. In February 1996, he wac inducted into the University of Northern Colorado School of Music "Hall of Honor." This distinction was bestowed on only 18 alumni and faculty wh have achieved greatness as musician. educator, and humanitarians in the school', first 100 years. He received The Catholic University of America',' 1998 Alumni Achievemenl Award in the field of Music. Thi .. award, which is presented annually by the Board of Governors Alumni A. sociation, recognized his accomplishments and honored him for hi, life's work. In 1999 he received the Univ rsity of Northern Colorado Alumni A'sociarion Honored Alumni Award in the category of "Contributions to Music." In 2001. he was the recipient of the Award of Di tinction for Contributions to Music Education from the Illinoi ' Music Educators Association. The two previous recipient were Sir Georg Solti and rhe Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Meryl J, Isaac. In December 2003, he was the r cipient of the Phi Beta Mu International Out tanding Bandmaster Award.

In 2005 Graham wa named as the "Supervising Editor" for Ma ters Music Publications, Inc., a division of Edwin F. Kalmus & Co.. Inc.

Phi Beta Mu Phi Beta Mu is the highest honorary illlernalional band director's fraternity. It was organized to encomage the building of better bands and the development of better musicians in schools throughout the world and to fo ter deeper appreciation of good music and more wide spread public interest.

Gamma Chapler of Phi Beta Mu was organized and the charter members initiated on ovember 27, 1953, at the state convention of the Indiana Music Educators Association.

There are presently nearly 100 active members in the, tate of Indiana.

Purpose I. To stimulate interest in the study of the band and its literature. 2. To d velop a desire for bood band literature. 3. To encourage good fellowship between the member of the Asso latlOn. 4. To bring the work of the Association before the Indiana Department of Education and the citizens of the

State in order that it ,hall gain greater recognition and. upport. 5. To provide educational meetings for band director to raise the standards of instruction. 6. To :ecure recognition of School Administrators and Board of Education to the effect that th band is an

integral part of the. chool curriculum and is entitled to recognition as a curricular. ubject. 7. To develop a band in each community which shall serve as a vital force in bringing people into closer

relationship with the schools of the State.

History At the Indiana Music Educators Associ, tion (IMEA) Convention in 1953. Nilo Hovey. Don Marketto. Ben Niles. and Jim White met to organize an a s ciati n to promote bands in the tate of Indiana. In thc fall of 1954 these men along with Carroll Copeland Hal Meurer and other fine band directors officially founded the IJldiana Bandma ters A ociation.

rnA would initially engage in sponsoring a Marching Band Clinic. an All-State Band, and act in an advisory capacity for £MEA on band activities. The fir t Marching Band Clinic was organized in the fall of 19-6 and continued each year through the summer of 1979.

IBA would spon or its first All-State Band 1n 1961 with John Paynter as the gue t conductor. The event went to two ensembles. the All-State Band and the All-State Honor Band in 1980. The first Junior High All-Region Band. were organized in the fall of 1980 at three sites. As intere t grew the number of ites was increased to the current twelve. In 1994 the event was renamed the All-Region Honor Band Festival.

The first IBA commission was premiered at the 1988 All-Slate HOllor Band concel1 with the composer. Robert Jager conducting. The As ociation premiered the first junior high commission by John O'Reilly at the AlI­Region FestivaL later that fall.

The winter of ]995 saw the first collaboration of the IndicUla chapter f Ule College Band Director's 'ational Association (CBDNA) and rnA to sponsor the Indiana All-Collegiate Honor Band. The group now is fomled biannually to peltoml at the IMEA Convention.

In 1999 IBA established a site on the World Wide Web (www). That year the Association also e. tabli hed All­Di triet Honor Bands for student. in grades 9 through 12 performing at six sites in the fall of 2000. The first All-District Band commission. by Robert Sheldon. was premiered in the fall of 2005. IRA now commis ions a new work for concert band each school year.

In 2005, Ule membership of IBA establishecltbe "Ray Cramer Scholarhip" to be awarded annually to aenior member of the All-State Bands. The first 1000 award was presented to Alexandra Andrejevich of Valparai. o. Sh was a four-year member of the Honor Band. playing principal horn each year.
