This month’s luncheon meeting will be like

no other you may have ever attended. You

may never see another event like this in your

lifetime!

On November 17th we’ll be celebrating the

100th birthday of Henry Trumbower—one

of our long-time Chapter members and

WWII veteran.

For background on this new centenarian’s

fascinating life, visit henry.ircmoaa.org

for a reprint of an article in the Life

Remembered section of the Jan-Feb 2017

issue of Portfolio magazine.

The luncheon meeting will feature a couple

of short, interesting presentations about

Henry. Also at the meeting, you’ll hear

about next year’s Florida Council of

Chapters State Convention in early June at

Sanibel Island. The convention price that we

have secured at the Sanibel Harbor Marriott

Spa and Resort is, in itself, an amazing

vacation opportunity. Visit the convention

website at sanibel.ircmoaa.org for more

information and view the video “Leadership

in Paradise.”

We’re including the 2018 Dues Notice in

this newsletter issue. In case you missed our

October luncheon meeting, the membership

voted to raise the annual dues for Regular

members (not Associate members or

Surviving Spouses) $5 to cover increased

operating costs for the Chapter.

You will note on the 2018 Dues Notice

where you have an opportunity to make a

tax-free donation to one of four separate

funds we maintain for:

• The Chip Saunders Scholarship;

• Veteran’s Assistance (through the

Veterans Council of Indian River

County);

• Honor Flight; and

• The Chapter General Fund (for

operating expenses).

We rely on these donations instead of

conducting fund-raisers during the year. We

are very grateful to our many members who

take this occasion to contribute to these

worthy causes.

New to the Dues Notice is your ability to

purchase packages of 5 or 10 luncheons.

We are raising slightly the price of

luncheons next year to $22 to cover the costs

of our guest speakers and other guests.

These bundles will help you keep your cost

at $20 and reduce the administrative burden

of collecting checks each month. Jim

Happy 242nd Birthday

Anniversary to the U.S. Marine

Corps

The time for celebration and pageantry is

once again at hand with the 242nd Marine

Corps birthday set to take place Nov. 10.

What does the celebration mean to Marines

across the globe? To Gen. John A.

Lejeune, obviously, it meant a great deal.

On Nov. 1, 1921, he issued Marine Corps

Order No. 47, Series 1921, which provided a

summary of the history, mission and

traditions of the Corps. The illustrious

Lejeune directed that the order be read to

every command each subsequent year on

Nov. 10 in honor of the founding of the

Marine Corps.

It will be read in locations across the United

States and across the globe wherever

Marines might be found. It might be a silent

observation in an austere location, or

perhaps a more ceremonial reading.

Either way it was formalized in 1952, by

Commandant Gen. Lemuel C. Shepherd

Jr., who directed the celebration of the

Marine Corps Birthday be formalized

throughout the Corps. The details were

included in the Marine Corps Drill Manual

approved in 1956 and helped bring together

the inclusion of a cake ceremony and other

traditions still held every year at the Marine

Corps Birthday Ball.

One key piece is the passing of the first

piece of cake from senior to junior Marines;

it is a symbolic gesture of the passing of

experience and knowledge. That tradition

begins in recruit training and at Officer

Candidates School, where knowing where

one comes from, knowing our past and

living up to that example set is emblazoned

in the minds of those in training.

PERSONAL AFFAIRS By John Papageorge & Terry Treat

Protect yourself! Strengthen your

passwords!

Cybercrime is at an all-time high and hardly

a day goes by without a large company

announcing large data losses. The Equifax

disaster is the most recent example.

Some might argue that it hardly matters

whether you choose a good password or not

because hackers are often bypassing the

front door and attacking large servers via

security vulnerabilities. Regardless, you

should do everything in your power to make

sure that crooks don't enter through the front

door. The high processing power of

computers has made it easier for bots to

bludgeon their way through security systems

by using brute force, a technique whereby

every possible combination of username and

password is attempted. What can you do?

Choose a Long Password: Imagine I want

to log in to your account. I know your

username but I don't know the password. It

seems obvious, but the longer the password

is the more attempts it is going to take me to

guess that password. Hackers won't be

typing in each password one by one. They

will be instead using a program that uses

every possible combination of characters.

The shorter passwords are going to be

broken much quicker than a long password.

Avoid Using Real Words: Before

attempting every single combination of

characters to try and guess a password, a

hacker is likely to try a standard dictionary.

For instance imagine you have created a

password called "pandemonium". It is

reasonably long so it is better than "Fred"

and "12345". However a hacker will have a

file with millions of words in them and they

will run a program against the system they

are trying to hack trying every single

password in the dictionary. A computer

program can attempt the login to the system

a number of times a second and so

processing the entire dictionary will not take

that long especially if there are a series of

computers (known as bots) all attempting

the hack. Therefore you are much better off

creating a password that doesn't exist in a

dictionary.

Use Special Characters: When creating a

password you should use special characters

including uppercase letters, lowercase

letters, numbers and special symbols such as

#,%,!,|,* etc.Don't be fooled into thinking

that you can use a standard word and replace

common letters with numbers and symbols.

For instance you might be tempted to create

a password called "Pa55w0rd!"Hackers are

much too clever for this sort of technique

and the dictionaries will not only have a

copy of each real word they will have the

real word with combinations of special

characters. Hacking a password called

"Pa55w0rd!" would probably take

milliseconds to crack.

Put it all Together and Use Sentences as

Passwords: This concept isn't about using

an entire sentence as a password but using

the first letter of each word in a sentence as

a password. Think of something important

to you and easy to remember. Create a

sentence with it: “I retired from the Army as

a LTC in 1984”, and use it to create a

password by using the first letter from each

word: IrftAaaLTCi1984. The casing is the

important thing here. The first letter is the

first letter in the sentence, Army is a proper

name, and LTC is a military abbreviation,

all of which should be uppercase. All the

other characters should be lowercase. To

make it even more secure add a special

character:IrftAaaLTCi1984! This is an

Page 9: INDIAN RIVER CHAPTER CELEBRATING 34 YEARS 1983-2017moaafl.org/Chapters/IRCMOAA/documents/Newsletters/Nov2017.pdf · Remembered section of the Jan-Feb 2017 issue of Portfolio magazine.

Vol 1 No 10 Nov 2017

excellent password: 15 characters long, not a

dictionary word and includes upper & lower

case, numbers and special characters which

by anybody's standards is quite secure, and,

because you came up with the subject, you

should be able to easily remember it.

Well…some of us. If you follow through

with just this tip, you will be much more

secure on the web.

If you want to do any even better job, Use

Different Passwords for Each

Application. This is possibly the most

important piece of advice. Do not use the

same password for all of your accounts. If

a company loses your data and the data is

unencrypted the hackers will see the

password you have used. The hacker can

then try other websites with the same

username and password combination and

access other accounts as well.

How can I possibly keep track of a bunch of

passwords? Use a Password Manager such

asKeePassX. This allows you to store all of

your usernames and passwords in a secure

application. The password manager can

generate secure passwords for you. Rather

than remembering the passwords you log in

to the password manager and copy/paste the

password into the site you wish to access.
