The Indian Institutes of Technology is the self-directed public engineering and

management institutes of India. The IITs are governed by the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961

which has declared them as "institutions of national importance", and lays down their powers,

duties, framework for governance etc. The Institutes of Technology Act, 1961 lists sixteen

institutes. Each IIT is an autonomous institution, linked to the others through a common IIT

Council, which oversees their administration. The IITs award degrees ranging from B.Tech to

PhD. The college not only provides knowledge that has led many of its students to great heights

but also offers a fair and equal opportunity for all.

India has raisin to the technology challenged by pushing the younger generation in

technology and development field and IIT has been a big part of it. Colleges in India have often

been accused of accepting students based on donation and family status which in many cases

have proven to be right. IIT has risen over this by not only no excepting any kind of donations

but by have a no reserve policy at all. Colleges in India need to have seats reserved for students

from low income families to certain reserved communities, kind of like what American college

have for Hispanic students giving them a higher change of acceptance. IIT doesn’t accept

students based on their SAT score or their high school grades but rather on an entrance exam like

MIT offers. The exam is known as the IIT JEE, which is a 6 hour exam not only measuring

student’s aptitude but their IQ, their world knowledge and their eagerness to learn. Reports have

Page 2: Indian Institute of Technology

suggested that students study for 18 hours a day 6 days a week for months before attempting the

exam and the ratio of acceptance is rate is high, 2% of everyone who applied, Howard as a

acceptance rate of 10%.

IIT has never been ranked by any website or critique mainly because most college that

are ranked are willing to pay to be ranked but IIT prefers not to be ranked by anyone and explain

that they rather let their work speak for their success, and by having alumni’s from google,

Microsoft and other fortune 500 companies. IIT doesn’t only educate students in the major but

molds them to be leaders and entrepreneurs. IIT offers their students the liberty to arrange and

organize their own sport teams, hire their coaches, chiefs and even professor. It’s an institute that

puts the students in charge of their education.

The college encourages students to graduate and start their own businesses, trust their

ideas and teaches them to make it into successful businesses. 33.2 percent of all companies

founded by immigrants in the US had an Indian co-founder, according to a study by Kauffman

Foundation, with Indians founding more technology and engineering firms than the next nine

immigrant groups combined. Sharad Sharma, co-founder of iSPIRT, a think-tank that champions

the causes of startups, thinks the strong IIT alumni network is key. “This helps the entrepreneur

be better prepared for VC fund raising. I think the better preparation makes a big difference.” In

the study, the IITs had a total of 264 entrepreneurs, who have founded 205 companies and

cumulatively raised $3.15 billion. Last year, IITs came in at number 10, when only companies

that were founded in the US were taken into account. They have jumped six places this year as

companies founded in India are also taken into account. These include e-commerce superstars

such as Flipkart and Snapdeal. This reflects the fact that Indian startups now have the maturity to

attract large amounts of capital, founded on a quality and commendable education.
