Greetings!

IASTAM Oration and Awards 2018

Selection of IASTAM awardees is not an easy task. With a view to improvise we bring in changes. The experts, particularly from non-AYUSH areas, may remain unnoticed because of limited interactions. It was therefore decided to approach our previous awardees and members of National Advisory Council. The support from previous awardees has been encouraging. This is reflected in the final selection of the awardees for 2018.

Selection of Mark Rosenberg represents an interesting development where ayurved is looked at with interest all over the world. An architect by training, Mark has initially worked in the area of film making for an internationally famous advertising organization. He became a yoga enthusiast at a young age. It seems ayurved provided a settling ground for his creative energies which is obvious from the leadership that he has provided now to promote

Ayurved in Europe. His passion and commitment cannot go unnoticed when one meets him. Based on nearly three decades of perseverance and efforts of promoting ayurved, I believe his Pandit Shiv Sharma Oration for advocacy of Ayurveda will reflect the ground realities. I look forward to practical solutions to face challenges for global promotion of Ayurved.

Prof. Dr. Larry Walker is known to us for nearly fifteen years. Series of Indo-US workshops were conducted at India and his institute in USA for scientific exposure and mutual gains. I remember, on a flight from Bengaluru to Delhi, he readily agreeing to my idea to evolve a joint program. IASTAM NEWSLETTER November 2017

him as a scientist who respects the intricacies of ancient knowledge and its comprehensiveness. He was the first to recognise (while others were sceptical) with my thoughts on standardisation which later took the form of ‘Matrix Model’. I am confident his wisdom, his huge experience and his scientific insights will throw some more light to further research in AYUSH products with right approach.

Dr. Ram Vishwakarma has profound experience, both in private industry set-up as well as in a governmental environment. In changed times when industry-academia need to work together. AYUSH sector needs research of relevance. Dr. Ram will share his experiences and views as Director of Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine on how to ensure applied aspects of research.

Prof. Suresh Gupta recipient of Prof. K. N. Udupa award has contributed significantly with 16 patents, several of these of natural origin based on Ayurved or Unani systems of medicine.

Prof. Ramesh Bijlani brings in a different spirit of spiritualism to the meaning of yoga not only in theory but very much in practice.

Most of us exposed to Gujarat Ayurved University, Jamnagar know of Dr. A. J. Baxi as a quiet and persistent contributor to teaching and learning of pharmaceutical aspects of Ayurvedic products. He was a close friend of Dr. K. M. Parikh and he will receive the Shri Gopaldas Parikh award.

Dr. P. Ramarao has extensive academic experience in the field of pharmaceutical research particularly natural products. We look forward to his ideas and guidance.

Dr. L. Mahadevan represents a unique blend of integrating biomedical clinical knowledge with strong footing on Ayurvedic principles. His contributions have been highly appreciated by student fraternity and faculty in Kerala. Integrating knowledge of two streams while adhering to classical Ayurvedic practice is not easy. Ayurvedic clinicians of other parts can learn much from him

The credibility of the clinical excellence as an Ayurvedic practitioner of Dr. Tapan Vaidya has grown beyond boundaries of Gujarat. He will receive award for excellence in profession. Similarly, Dr. Rastogi’s academic excellence has spread to other corners of the country with his knowledge, writings and efforts to propagate scientific spirit in the field of Ayurved. Dr. Gokulan brings a unique expertise that he has mastered over two decades in the area of Netra roga, disorders of eyes. Dr. Anand Chaudhary is already a wellknown name that has provided academic

leadership amongst ayurvedic fraternity. His contributions are well recognized.

More details about the awardees are in the following pages.

IASTAM will be honoured with the presence of these stalwarts from different parts of India and abroad representing expertise in various fields. Their contribution and participation at the Delhi meet will provide a good opportunity to upgrade our knowledge and information and as we claim will give an opportunity to ‘interact with the best’.

Delhi Pharmaceutical Sciences and Research University

Prof. Goyal, the Honourable Vice Chancellor of Delhi Pharmaceutical Sciences and Research University (DPSRU) has extended all the support. I already had two meetings to plan the event. Next will be the IX series of IASTAM Oration and Awards; and fourth in a row since we made it annual. Earlier events were held at Gujarat Ayurved University, Jamnagar (2015); with ICAAM at Pune (2016) and at Faculty of Ayurved, IMS, BHU, Varanasi (2017). We will be privileged to have the 2018 award function at an academic institute in Delhi. This will be our fifth event in Delhi. Conference under the leadership of Prof. Goyal at the prime university in the capital of country will be of significance.

Conference on AYUSH & Natural Products

There has been increasing demand and growth as well as global trends towards the Natural and AYUSH products. These products are gaining importance. That has given rise to several issues related to AYUSH products. This need to be considered. Everything is now-a-days sold under AYUSH banner that has impact on acceptance and relevance to people. Therein quality becomes an important point and effectiveness a need. As demand increases there is competitiveness. Ability to adapt to newer technology is felt much more than ever before. The conference aims to address these issues.

The Conference on ‘Challenges for Global Competitiveness of AYUSH and Natural Products’ along with the award function is being planned in a big way. We are expecting nearly 350+ delegates. Posters are already despatched to the AYUSH and Pharmaceutical institutes to create better awareness. Maximum participation is expected at the conference.

Our team is in place and is working closely with DPSRU team on the preparation of the conference and Award

BVDU and Baidyanath Awards

National Ayurved DayAyurved for Health Revolution

We are happy to present this 12th issue of Newsletter. The objective of the News Letter is to publish up-to-date activities of IASTAM India, scientific articles alongside relevant and insightful reviews. I am thankful to our President, Managing committee, Advisory Members, all the members for supporting and contributing for successfully publication of 12 issues.

We are celebrating Dhanvanntari Jayanti as National Ayurved Day. Shri Narendra Modi dedicated the first ever All India Institute of Ayurveda [AIIA] to the Nation at Delhi on 17th October 2017.

Addressing a large gathering of Ayurveda practitioners, professionals, academicians, industries, Honorable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi wishes the country happy Diwali and National Ayurveda Day and congratulated the gathering on the celebration of Dhanvantari Jayanti as National Ayurveda Day. He complimented the Ministry of AYUSH for the establishment of the All India Institute of Ayurveda.

Shri Modi spoke of how the untapped potential of Ayurveda had significant scope in the future as the concept of holistic healthcare was increasingly being adopted by people across the globe. He stated that along with giving emphasis to the practitioners, an equal focus must be laid on the Ayurveda medicine manufacturers.

Back to the Nature

In his speech he said that as the world was heading “back to nature and wellness”, Ayurveda is India’s strength and urged those working in the sector to revive.

The Prime Minister asserted that nations cannot progress unless they value and cherish their history and heritage. Those nations, who leave their heritage behind, are destined to lose their identity. If we see the history of India we see that it was very precious and strongly

known by the world. We forgot our legacy for a long time, but now we have started remembering it again. The Prime Minister said that when India was not independent, its knowledge, and its traditions such as Yoga and Ayurveda were belittled and no country can develop unless they are proud of its legacy, their history, heritage, culture and bright rules.

Ayurved day

Today we all are celebrating 21 June as Yoga day. Groups of people who come together in various countries and lakhs of populations celebrating yoga day and seeing the photographs of it all, we feel proud that Yoga is connecting the people across the world and that is the heritage of India. Now it’s becoming the heritage of human beings. This happened in just 3 years; no doubt Ministry of AYUSH is the important part in this process. Ayurved is not only the treatment but it is the part of Social, environmental health. Government knows this aspect and gives importance to Ayurved to become a Public Health Care system with integration.

Developing AYUSH Hospitals

Ministry of AYUSH is working on various priority areas of health. For progress and propagation of Ayurved, it is

Hon. Prime Minister Shri Naredra Modi

IASTAM NEWSLETTER November 2017

very important that in every district has a well-established and well equipped hospital. In the last 3 years, more than 65 Ayurved hospitals have been developed. Just like AAIMs, in Delhi, All India Institute of Ayurved is the part of this scheme; initially 750 patients visited every day, but it is increasing. The PM says that this is a function where he doesn’t say all the best and keep it up because he doesn’t want his people to be sick but he wishes to say that environment of wellness will be developed in India. Building up as an apex institute under the ministry of AYUSH, the institution is expected to bring synergy between the traditional wisdom of Ayurveda and modern diagnostic tools and technology.

Education

The existing Ayurveda education structure should be revisited. It is interesting to know that what percentage of students practice Ayurved after completing their studies. We have to develop dedication, trust and self-confidence for our own science. It is necessary to cross the boundary where only Ayurved can be the effective solution. We also need to focus on quality education and look for different courses of Ayurved in different areas. It can be possible to develop a system where after completion of each year, students can get a certificate. So if student cannot complete the course due to some reasons, he also does something on the basis of what he has completed. This may be the better option for the future of students.

Development of Standard Ayurved guidelines and terminology

The Ministry has published an ‘Ayurveda standard guideline’ to standardize medicines and treatments in this ancient therapy system. The Pharmacopeia Commission of Indian medicine is working for the standardization of medicines. He congratulated and said that it will be beneficial to understand Ayurved scientifically.

Ayurved for sportsmen, soldiers and others

PM Modi said that today every sportsman has their own physiotherapist, using medicine for pain management and we know how they are trapped in their carrier, whether knowingly or unknowingly. Ayurved and Yoga will be very much effective in this condition. We need research on medicines providing instant relief without side effects. Our soldiers are working in the forest, changing environment and weather, in this condition Ayurved and

Yoga will help prevent diseases and boost the immune system. It is also needed to develop value & quality for Ayurved dietetics, Pharmacology, Panchakarma therapy etc.

Herbal plant sector

Herbal medicines are becoming popular worldwide and are the main source of income. PM said that we have to increase the awareness about plant drugs. He wished that Ministry of AYUSH and Kausula Vikas Yojana together develop schemes or short term courses for farmers and students. The farming of medicinal plants will give new employment opportunities. India has long coastal areas which can be explored for new discoveries; one can research on sea plants and develop good quality medicines for wellness which will change the life of fisherman.

Ayurved Formulations

In today’s fast food era, old age Ayurved practices for manufacturing of formulations may not be useful. We need to change the process, packaging of the medicines. It will benefit us if we change the approaches; investigate quick relief & less side effect medicine with Ayurved principles. Today, the world is demanding Ayurved medicine; India has scope to capture the global market.

Investment in health care system and CRS

Government has given permission for 100 % foreign investment in the health care system and how yoga and Ayurved will be beneficial from these investments. Prime Minister requested all the companies, private sectors to come forward to contribute parts of their corporate responsibility services [CRS funds] for Ayurved and Yoga.

Innovations

The PM also said that we have to think on the various innovations for holistic health care system not for India but for world. Everybody is looking towards Yoga and Ayurved for betterment of human life. This is the correct time, we should not waste it. We should move forward with determination. We respect every healthcare system and want the growth of all. He says the government wants the poor to get access to India’s healthcare system.

He also stressed on the vaccination and Cleanliness crucial to strengthen preventive healthcare.

“Like IT revolution a few years ago, Time has come for a ‘Health Revolution’ under the aegis of AYURVEDA,”
