1980 50.00%
2010 33.30%
Non-Fed (world; FAO
2012)
Pertinent issue for India
Because of our low farmed fish species diversity
Lessons we have to learn?
World farmed fish comprises of 71.90% carps among which 27.70% are non-fed because they are filter feeders; rest are fed with low protein feeds (FAO,2012)

GAINING GROUND Future of Freshwater Fish Sector in India
VIETNAM - Vietnam's Tra (catfish) exports to India are rising as the fish becomes more popular. According the General Department of Customs, Vietnam's Tra fish exports to India hit US$7.69 million in 2012, up 32 per cent. Over the past eight months, the figure reached $7.67 million, compared to $5.903 million in the same period last year. Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Processors (VASEP) said. (FISHSITE)

RESOURCES Future of Freshwater Fish Sector in India
We have overcome the
feed constraint for cage farming
systems
We have been talking of cage systems and reservoir potential since long. Progress?
Dont we think cage systems can add to the 4.23 MMT farmed fish production if they can produce 150-200 kg/m3 ?

31
THE PULL Future of Freshwater Fish Sector in India
Vijay Anand; Aqua India 2014; 23-24 January, Vijayawada, India; Advocating a path forward for freshwater fish farming
If we succeed marketing 100,000 MT of processed fish, we need to
produce 200,000 MT fish
If we don’t process, then we need only 100,000 MT to market
100,000 MT
Additional=300,000 MT feed
32
CONTRASTS Future of Freshwater Fish Sector in India
AP uses 52,000 MT fish feed per month
WB uses 3500 MT feed per month
