RPC Phone Meeting on 23rd Jan., ‘’08 (Wed) : 90 minutes

Attended by Walter, Archana and Ian at CERN

and joined by people on phone from

Italy (Pino), China, Korea, Pakistan (Hasan) and India (Lalit)

• All relevant RPCs are underground and 3-4 people are required immediately and urgently for commissioning. • Six high rate RPCs for the high eta region from Korea are at CERN to understand the technology for FRPC upgrade. Details to be presented on 12th Feb.

• Status of RPCs for CMS in India and delivery schedule was discussed. Performance of fresh KODEL gas-gaps.

• 12 Feb meeting (airport pickup for delegates on 11th Feb ?).

The Final Assembly

The Cosmic Stand for characterising the gas-gaps, leakage current and efficiency measurements

RPCs can operate either in avalanche or streamer mode and accordingly need a proper mixture of Argon, Isobutane, RE134A and SF6 gases in a required proportion

1 to 8 channel flow divider with safety bubblers & dew point meter

The infrastructure

Outlook• gap making technology

Resistive Plate Chambers are low cost detectors used in avalanche or streamer mode in various experiments both with cosmic rays and accelerators. They will play an important role for the generation of first level muon trigger at CMS and ATLAS at LHC [1]. 27,000 RPCs, each measuring 2m x 2m in area are required for the INO project [2]

OptionsWe just keep waiting for funds approval till Dec end and can then happily say that funds were not made available in time

OR

We vigourously pursue it during the next few months with DST and get the approval

No funding by Dec end : We forget the issue(the best solution perhaps !! ??)

If funding comes : then how to ?Clearly, now this is a University call and

the Universities have to take the lead

It is being demonstrated how to go about
