FINAL REPORT Solar Electrification of 1000 Houses in 20 Off grid Villages of Rajasthan

and Bihar

8. Women Barefoot Solar Engineers: 20 semi-literate women from each

project village have been trained as ‘Barefoot Solar Engineers’ in two

batches before installation of solar lighting units in the houses. Total

1000 houses in 20 villages have been solar electrified by the 20 trained

women barefoot solar engineers. All the solar lighting units will be

maintained regularly by the women barefoot solar engineers at village

level established solar powered Rural Electronic Workshop (REW)

provided with stock of spares for next 5/7 years, and electronic items

and tools thus the approach is technically sustainable under the

control of village communities.

The Village Communities will contribute for spares and stipend for

barefoot solar engineers- this is a financial strength to monitor at the

communities level.

Third, it empowers rural women being women barefoot solar engineers in

their own community.

11. Profile of Implementing Organisation: Social Action for Rural Advancement (SARA) Society is community based organization affiliated with Barefoot College, has a long experience of working with rural community in Sikar, Jaipur and Nagaur districts of Rajasthan since 1992. The Organisation is registered under the Rajasthan Societies Registration Act 28, 1958 at Sikar on 26th February 1992.

Organization had previously addressed basic needs of the community and introduced several technological interventions such as availability of drinking water, technology trainings for skill up-gradation & low cost community and individual structures. Organizational team members are trained and practicing solar technology from last 7 years.

12. Project activities completed

• Preparation of 20 Village Communities for solar

electrification.

• Trained 20 women barefoot solar engineers before solar

electrification of 1000 houses and its regular maintenance by them.

• Village communities contributed down payment for replacement

of batteries after 5/6 years of installation and monthly

contribution for maintenance of solar units lanterns along with

stipend to trained women barefoot solar engineers. The

contribution has been put into the bank accounts of village

communities for its financial sustainability.

• 1000 houses in 20 villages of 6 districts of Rajasthan and

Bihar states have been solar electrified by 20 women barefoot

solar engineers.

• Established 20 Solar Powered Rural Electronic Workshops for

fabrication, repair and maintenance of all the solar lighting

units at village through Barefoot Solar Engineers.

• A Completion Certificate of each village has been given by the

Village Communities/ Panchayats. The first time the village communities have passed such resolutions that should be considered the final completion certificate. (Appendix-III Completion Certificates)

13. Lessons learnt:

It has proved illiterate rural women could able to fabricate, repair

and maintain solar lighting systems at village level on receiving 6

months barefoot solar engineers’ training. This approach empowers

women with self respect and dignity among the village communities.

The process is entirely community owned and controlled by

them. Thus it is fully technical and financial sustainable model.

It is being replicated other parts of Rajasthan, Bihar and Jharkhand

States through selection and training of women barefoot solar engineers.

Besides the project activities women Barefoot Solar Engineers are

being fabricated 2000 solar lanterns and 1000 solar lighting units at

Rural Electronic Workshop Laxmipura. It sets an example of self

confidence and livelihood sources.

14. Social Audit : All the expenditures with accounts of the project

have been kept open to public scrutiny and displayed posters, charts

sharing project information among the villages communities at

Bhirawata Village in Jaipur District on 17th April 2012.
