Ajay Bhushan Pandey appointed as the new Finance Secretary

RBI Deputy Governor N.S. Vishwanathan resigned ahead of retirement

On March 5,2020, N.S Vishwanathan, one of the Reserve Bank of India’s deputy governors, who is due to retire on July 3,2020, has announced his resignation due to health problems. Badminton Asia Championships 2020 shifted to Manila from Wuhan Badminton Asia confirmed that Badminton world federation (BWF) has shifted the Badminton Asia Championships 2020 to Manila, Philippines from Wuhan, China.

It will be conducted in Manila from April 21st to 26th, 2020. The Badminton Asia Championship 2020 event is shifted due to the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak and this championship falls within the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games Qualification window.

PM lays foundation stone for the Bundelkhand Expressway Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the Bundelkhand Expressway at Chitrakoot on 29th February.

Union Minister for Home Affairs Amit Shah inaugurated the National Security Guard (NSG) Regional Hub campus at Kolkata, West Bengal.

On March 6, 2020 The Maharashtra Government renamed Aurangabad Airport as Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj Airport.

The name of the airport has been renamed in order to honour Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, who was the son of Maratha warrior King Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Earlier, Mumbai airport has been named as Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Airport while Kolhapur airport was renamed as Chhatrapati Rajaram Maharaj. 19th World Productivity Congress 2020 The 19th edition of World Productivity Congress (WPC) will be held from May 6th to May 8th, 2020, in Bengaluru, Karnataka.

World Productivity Congress is the world’s largest convention for productivity development that shape future productivity growth.

The theme of 19th World Productivity Congress is “Industry 4.0: Innovation and Productivity”.

India is hosting the conference after a gap of 45 years. Before this, the country hosted the WPC in the year 1974.

Kaziranga National Park under Project Tiger scheme

On March 2, 2020, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) has notified that under the Compensatory Afforestation Fund Management and Planning Authority (CAMPA), a financial assistance of Rs 1.51 crore has been sanctioned to Kaziranga National Park in Kanchanjuri, Assam during the financial years 2018-19 and 2019-2020.

For the financial years 2018-19 Rs 94,46,585 was sanctioned while Rs 51,24,670 was allocated for 2019-2020.

Apart from this, under the Project Tiger scheme, Rs 33 crore was sanctioned. A financial assistance of Rs 10.30 crore was sanctioned for 2018-19 and Rs 22.81 crore was allocated for 2019-20 to Kaziranga Tiger Reserve, which includes Kaziranga National Park.

About Project Tiger scheme: Initiated in April 1, 1973, Project Tiger was started to save tigers from getting extinct by taking preventive measures. It was launched in Jim Corbett National Park, Uttrakhand under the leadership of Indira Gandhi to save Royal Bengal Tigers.

MHA approved automated facial recognition system (AFRS) On March 4, 2020, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has approved the automated facial recognition system (AFRS) by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) for better identification of unrecognized bodies, missing children, persons and criminals without violating the privacy.

Launched in 2019, AFRS is world’s largest facial recognition system for automatic tracking, identification, and verification of person from digital images, photos, digital sketches, video frames and video sources by comparing selected facial features of the image from an already existing image database.

Gajendra Singh Shekhawat launched SBM (G) Phase-II

On March 4, 2020, Union Minister of for Jal Shakti, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat launched Phase II of Swachh Bharat Mission (Grameen) [SBM (G)] at a National Dissemination and Consultation workshop in New Delhi.

It should be noted that this phase-II will be implemented from 2020-21 to 2024-25 with an outlay of Rs. 1,40,881 crores.

Focus of SBM(G) Phase-II: To strengthen the efforts made under Phase-I of the SBM (G) in last five years (2014-2019) in terms of toilet access and usage or Open Defecation Free Plus (ODF Plus).

To ensure effective institution of solid and liquid waste management (SLWM) in every Gram Panchayat of the country. Tocontinue employment generation through construction of household and community toilets etc.

Incentives to be provided under SBM(G) Phase-II:

An incentive of Rs.12,000 for construction of Individual Household Toilet (IHHL) for eligible household as per the existing norms will continue. A financial assistance to the Gram Panchayats (GPs) for construction of Community Managed Sanitary Complex (CMSC) at village level has been increased from Rs.2 lakh to Rs.3 lakh per CMSC. The fund sharing pattern between Centre and States will be 90:10 for North-Eastern States and Himalayan States and UT of J&K; 60:40 for other States; and 100:0 for other Union Territories (UTs), for all the components.

Govt aims to replace all level crossings on NH with Over/under Bridges

On March 4, 2020,The central Government has aimed to replace all the level crossings on National Highways (NH) by Road Over Bridges / Road Under Bridges under the Setu Bharatam scheme, which is being implemented by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways with an aim to ensure safe and smooth flow of traffic and decrease road fatalities by 50 % by 2020.

Setu Bharatam scheme: It was launched by Narendra Modi on March 4, 2016 to make all national highways free of railway crossings in order to prevent the accidents and loss of lives at level crossings.

Objectives: The government had identified about 208 Railway crossings,which will be done away with and replaced by Rail Over Bridges (ROBs) at an estimated cost of Rs. 10,200 crore. Under this,1500 bridges of the British era (over 50 to 60 years)will be overhauled across India.

India among top suppliers of pharma drugs used in trafficking: INCB Report 2019

In accordance with the “Report of the International Narcotics Control Board for 2019”, by International Narcotics Control Board (INCB) released by United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime (UNODC), India is named among the top manufacturers of illicit and licit drugs that are smuggled to other countries.

Highlights of report with reference to India:

Non Submission of Form P: India has not submitted Form P of INCB which is used to report annual statistics of substances controlled under the Convention on Psychotropic Substances of 1971.

Largest seizure in India: 1.8 tons of pseudoephedrine was confiscated in Noida, Uttar Pradesh in a single seizure on May 11, 2019.

World’s 1st nation to make all public transport free from Feb 29 In order to reduce traffic pressure on the road, Luxembourg, the 7th smallest country in Europe, has been made public transport free from February 29, 2020.

It became the first country in the world to do so. However, this free public transport system does not include 1st -class travel tickets on trains and certain night bus services.

It is expected that more than 65 % of people in Luxembourg use their car to go to work in 2025, down from 73% in 2017.

US-based think tank Global Financial Integrity (GFI) released the report titled “Trade-Related Illicit Financial Flows in 135 Developing Countries: 2008-2017”.

Key terms: Illicit Financial Flows (IFFs): It includes many types of activities, such as trade misinvoicing, smuggling, tax evasion, illegal earning etc. across an international border.

Trade misinvoicing: It is a method of hiding illicit financial flows within the international commercial trade system.

Value Gap: The amount of trade that was not properly taxed.

Freedom in the world 2020 report: Freedom House On March 5, 2020, According to the ‘Freedom in the World 2020” report, which analyzes democratic values and people’s freedom in 195 countries & 15 territories and ranks them category-wise, released by the Freedom House, a U.S -based watchdog that conducts research and advocacy on democracy.

India has ranked 83rd in the report along with Timor-Leste and Senegal in ‘Free’category.

While, Finland topped the list as the free democratic country.

The report derives its methodology from the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1948.

ECONOMY & BUSINESS OECD downgraded India’s GDP growth to 5.1% from 6.2% for 2020 Global agency Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) in its report titled “OECD Interim Economic Assessment Coronavirus: The world economy at risk” has trimmed India’s real GDP (Gross Domestic Product) growth forecast to 5.1% from the earlier projection of 6.2% for 2020 due to the impact of deadly coronavirus (COVID-19) on the domestic as well as the global economy.

For 2021, India’s real GDP growth is projected at 5.6% from the earlier forcast of 6.4%.

SBI switched to Cash Budget Based Assessment (CBBA) method of assessment for corporate

State Bank of India has switched to “Cash Budget Based Assessment (CBBA)” from “Projected Balance Sheet (PBS)” method of Fund Based Working Capital (FBWC) limits for assessment of the working capital requirement for corporates or large advances.

The whole bank advances of SBI grew by 6.79% year-on-year (yoy) to Rs 23.01-lakh crore as of December-end 2019 against Rs 21.55-lakh crore as of December-end 2018.

So far, SBI has been following the “Projected Balance Sheet (PBS)” method for assessment of the working capital requirement for large advances. However, due to increase in the number and complexity of the digital transactions, the monitoring of transactions/assets of the borrowers has become a major challenge for the operating units.

CBBA of limits has been initiated for assessment of the FBWC limits for units with total FBWC exposure of more than Rs 50 crore from the banking system.

It also plans to focus on Refinancing “AAA/AA” rated corporates, where cash flows are on expected lines, for funding their completed projects to boost quality credit.

Sebi launches “Sebi SCORES” mobile app Markets regulator Sebi has launched a mobile application ‘Sebi SCORES’ for convenience of investors to lodge grievances in Sebi Complaints Redress System (SCORES).

“SCORES’ mobile app will make it easier for investors to lodge their grievances with Sebi, as they can now access SCORES at their convenience of a smart phone.

The mobile app will encourage investors to lodge their complaints on SCORES rather than sending letters to Sebi in physical mode.

According to Sebi norms, entities against whom complaints are lodged need to file an action taken report with the regulator within 30 days of receipt of the complaint.

Zomato acquires UberEats India for $206 million

Zomato, an Indian restaurant aggregator and food delivery startup has acquired Uber’s food delivery business in India.Uber Eats for $206 million, where the investment was priced at $171 million, the balance $35 million was received as a reimbursement of goods and services tax (GST) receivable from Zomato.

Following this acquisition, all of Uber Eats’ customers will be directed to Zomato platform & It will boost Zomato’s position in the food delivery market.

RBL Bank ties-up with Zomato to launch co-branded credit RBL Bank (formerly known as Ratnakar Bank),an Indian private sector bank, has entered into a partnership with Online food ordering and delivery app Zomato to launch co-branded credit cards, powered by Mastercard, for Zomato users.

It will be the first of its kind co-branded credit card, available in two variants – basic Edition Classic card and a more premium Edition Card.

The basic Edition Classic card starts with an annual membership of Rs.500 (plus taxes).

The premium edition is priced at Rs3,000 plus taxes. It will offer benefits such as Zomato Gold membership, cash back as well as airport lounge access.

In the Edition card variant, customers get 10% cashback to their Zomato wallet for payments made via Zomato. Uses of app: The app will be used for the fuel delivery services to housing societies, hotels, hospitals, malls, construction sites, industries, banquets & other bulk buyers of the diesel in various cities, including Gurugram, Ghaziabad, Noida, Faridabad, Hapur, Kundli, Manesar & Bahadurgarh.

The diesel will be delivered within the period of 8 hours, without wastage and spoilage of fuel.

Padma Shri awardee Balbir Singh Kullar passed away at 77

On March 1, 2020 Balbir Singh Kullar, former Indian hockey player, Padma Shri awardee and a Punjab Police Officer passed away at the age of 77 in Sansarpur, Jalandhar district, Punjab.

Balbir was born on 8th August 1942 in Sansarpur, Punjab.

Awards: Balbir Kullar was awarded Padma Shri award in 2009 and Arjuna award in 1999.

Dronacharya awardee & athletics coach Joginder Singh Saini passed away at 90 Senior athletics coach & Dronacharya awardee Joginder Singh Saini, who trained some of India’s finest track and field stars, passed away at the age of 90 on march1st , in Patiala, Punjab, due to age related problems.

He was born on January 1, 1930 in Hoshiarpur district in Punjab.

Awards: Saini received the Dronacharya award in 1997 for his contribution to Indian athletics.

World’s Oldest Man Chitetsu Watanabe Passes Away

World’s oldest man, Chitetsu Watanabe of Japan, has passed away at 112. He was born on March 5th, 1907.

He received his Guinness World Record certification on February 12, 2020.

With the death of Chitetsu Watanabe, Britain’s oldest man, Bob Weighton, who is 111, has now become the oldest person in the world.
