Title

Administrative Practice of Enhancing Networking through Outreach, Inter active and

Collaborative Programs

Objective

This practice is intended to enhance the knowledge output of PIET by improving the networking

of faculty within and beyond PIET through various outreach, interactive and collaborative

efforts. The practice is implemented at all the three levels, viz., local, national and international

through administrative measures.

Description

The practice is implemented through the following measures.

(i) Notices and emails are circulated among the faculty members to motivate them to identify and

ventilate their latent talents and to make them aware of the facilities of „duty leave‟ or „on duty

leave‟ for enhancing their networks (enclosure 2).

(ii) Some relaxation and adjustment in teaching load is provided to those members whose works

have a strong networking potential (enclosure 3).

(iii) Appropriate weightages are given to the networking accomplishments of faculty members in

the reports of self appraisal and departmental appraisal (enclosure 4).

Evidence of Success:

1. This practice evolved as an internal administrative mechanism to utilize the human resource at

our disposal in the best possible way by enhancing the network of each resource. The practice

thus helped to contribute to the vision and mission of the institute.

2. This practice promoted participation of faculty members in different programs leading to the

growth of their own networks and also the network of the institute, in turn. A few of these

programs are mentioned below.

(i) An „evening lecture series‟ was started that provided a platform to facilitate faculty members

to share their pursuits and outcomes with fellow colleagues and improve their networks by

joining the likeminded ones in these pursuits. The details are included in enclosure 5.

Page 3: Index 7.2 Best Practice 2 · networking with experts and organisations at the national level were promoted. (iv) Networking at international level was accomplished through collaborative

(ii) Outreach programs like visits of expert faculty to other organizations were promoted that

improved linkages and networking with local community.

(iii) Activities like guest lectures and co-authoring papers/articles that enhanced interaction and

networking with experts and organisations at the national level were promoted.

(iv) Networking at international level was accomplished through collaborative training programs.

The success of this practice is thus evident through the improved network of the faculty and

Stories in Detail

(i) Story of Dr VivekNanoti, Principal, PIET

I always believed in the strength of networking. So this practice not only helped me to improve

my network, it also helped me to put in place a strong and workable mechanism to widen the

network of PIET.

Though several activities helped me in the growth of my network, the foremost among them was

the conduct of various sessions at local, national and international levels. I conducted more than

500 sessions for faculty and students on a variety of topics from knowledge domains such as

Nano-Materials, Research Methodology, Pedagogy and Entrepreneurship. Lists of the topics of

these sessions and of the places where they are conducted are attached here [I, II]. These sessions

helped me to connect to people of various age groups and from different walks of life.

The second important aspect that helped me to widen my network has been my role as an

administrator. I have been a part of several administrative bodies that enabled me to connect with

peer administrators from various other organizations. A list of various administrative positions

that I held is enclosed here [III]. My membership of various professional bodies [IV] and the

various meetings I attended at important organizations [V] also helped me to improve my

interaction with different professionals and thus enhance my networking.

The third activity that facilitated enhancement of my network is research. My research work in

the areas of Nano Magnetic Materials, Soft ferrites and Hexa ferrites, gave me an opportunity to

collaborate with several researchers [VI]. My role as a Ph. D. supervisor (guided 12 Ph. D.

students), an author of research papers (published 40 papers in Journals and presented 87 papers

in conferences), editor of ISTE Maharashtra-Goa Section Newsletter (2003–2011), editor–in–

chief for International Journal of Knowledge Engg.,coordinator of various STTPs and convener

of many National Conferences also helped me to enhance my network.

I have visited various countries such as Scotland, England, Israel, Germany, France, Belgium,

Netherlands, Malaysia, Singapore, Poland, Dubai, Moscow for academic meetings and

conferences that enabled me to develop a wide network at the international level.I have been

handling several international assignments in recent years [VII] and currently handling various R

and D Projects [VIII] that are helping me to widen this network further.

(ii) Story of Dr Sanjay Jain, Professor of Physics and Head, Knowledge Center

The administrative practice of PIET regarding enhancing networking helped me to build and

grow my network and the network of the institute, in turn, through several outreach, interactive

and collaborative activities as described below.

The foremost activity that helped me in this practice is writing. My writing contributions at

various levels helped me to grow my network with a multipronged approach. The most

significant among these are the two books on physics authored by me [1]. The books have

received a wide acclaim [2] and have been included in the list of reference books by several

universities and institutes [3]. As a result my network widened to bring in its ambit professionals

such as publishers, creative writers, education researchers and professors and scientists from

reputed organizations.

The recommendation of our book in the Physics Lab manual of BITS Pilani, Hyderabad

[included in 3 above] helped me to network with the BITS faculty that resulted in collaborative

efforts with Prof Thiruvikraman of BITS towards writing a book on optics [4] Prof KG Krishna

of BITS also arranged an interactive webex session on the eve of teacher‟s day on 5th

September,

2016 that highlighted the „learning through stories‟ aspect of the book [5]. Our book was also

used for development of a textbook companion using Python (under FOSSEE project of IIT

Bombay) [6] and Scilab [7].

These books also helped me to broaden my writing activities and motivated me to start

contributing to local newspapers [8], national magazines and journals on several knowledge

domains within and outside the realm of physics. (The articles and papers are included under 7.3

– Institutional distinctiveness and the networking aspects are included here). This enabled me to

reach a wider audience. The encouraging response of readers led to further growth in my

network [9]. These efforts brought new fields like media (local dailies such as Hitavada) and

science communication (magazines like Science Reporter and Scientific India Magazine) in the

ambit of my network.

Page 25: Index 7.2 Best Practice 2 · networking with experts and organisations at the national level were promoted. (iv) Networking at international level was accomplished through collaborative

Another platform that helped me to widen my network is the knowledge center (KC) init iative

conceptualized and developed by me with appropriate support from the administration and the

management. The growth of this initiative and the growth in of my network complimented each

other as the initiative paved way for several new outreach, interactive and collaborative

activities. It aroused the interest of several organizations who invited me to deliver lectures and

conduct workshops about the KC initiative [10]. The following table includes few examples of

the links that enhanced my networking on the basis of this initiative.

1. My lecture at Raman Science Center about KC motivated a young student (IX standard),

ShreenabhAgrawal, who visited our center and was so much impressed that he wrote an article about the

center immediately in Hitavada [11]. Further, we offered Shreenabh to be an expert at KC, which he

accepted [12].

2. Among those who visited KC, liked the concept and got associated with it include Dr Rashmin Deshmukh, a homeopath [13]; Dr Tinu Agrawal, a data scientist; Mr Shekhar Gaiki, a chemical engineer

and founder of MVG Cancer foundation; Dr Rewatkar, an expert in nanotechnology; Dr Rajesh Iyer,

economist and writer and Dr MithileshTiwari, retired ISRO scientist.

3. The initiative also attracted the attention of IEEE Bombay Section, which invited me for alecture on the

KC theme. I delivered a talk on „Motivations of Knowledge, Skills and Wisdom Beyond Marks and Degrees

in Science and Engineering‟ at VPKBIET, Baramati on 20/12/2016 to an audience consisting of students,

professors and principals. [14]

4. On the basis of our recent paper, “Knowledge Center Initiative for Contributing to Catalyze the

Transformation of Engineering Education in India”, which was our maiden contribution to this journal, I

was offered to work as a reviewer of this journal. [15]

5. This initiative also motivated us to work in new areas like knowledge management [16], tiger

conservation and Gandhian science and engineering and resulted in collaborative contributions with

professionals such as an ophthalmologist, a crystallographer and a fiber optic engineer. (articles on tiger

conservation, Gandhi as a pioneer of the science of nonviolence, crystals and optical fibers included under 7.3).

6. My writing contributions fetched me the Best Writer Award by the RTM Nagpur University on 5

September 2017 [17] and my close association with Raman Science center resulted in my nomination as a

member of the local advisory committee of this center recently [18].
