Happy new Year and welcome to the first issue of 2012.

This month we’ve got a packed magazine for you. We take a sneak preview on page 54 of one of the first major shows

to take place this year, interiors UK at the neC in January promises to be as exciting as ever.

We’ve asked a few of the designers we’ve had the pleasure of working with during 2011 to give us their highlights from

the year; Lee Broom had an exciting and busy 2011 which culminated in him winning the ‘Designer of the Year’ award

2011 at the British Design Awards; a particular highlight for Howard sullivan was the Dazed and Confused exhibition

taking place at somerset House in London; and the team from glasgow-based graven images reflect on their many

highpoints of 2011.

Mark Ludmon takes a look at the world of interior lighting – this is always a favourite feature topic for me because i love

beautiful lights. Apart from the obvious practical purpose they serve, they truly have become stunning works of art. Turn

to page 31 to read about the latest trends.

Leading designer Dan Hopwood tells us about his week, reflecting on the way he once imagined his life as a designer

would be when he started out in interior designer 18 years ago… it’s slightly different to what he thought! Turn to page

11 to read about what he gets up to.

We hope that 2012 has got off to a good start for you. Don’t forget to keep your contributions coming in.

Mondaynow in 2011, each day starts with a sprintdown Harley street, half asleep, to the gymfor an intense 20 minute workout, wherework is the last thing on my mind.

i limp home for 8am and start work bycalling the various builders who are workingon my projects. They are usually tucking intobacon butties by then and so an ideal timeto catch up on progress.

still at home, i plan my day and checkemails. i also have a chance for a creativemoment, time to think about what mightbe. When i arrive in the studio there is littletime to consider the broad picture. With theteam poised ready, i already need to knowthe direction in which we are going.

i am lucky. My office is run efficiently witha small but very able team. Marc has beenaround for six years and oversees the dailyrunning of each project and keeps controlof budgets. Kristina is young, but highlyqualified and very talented. she will one daybe a great designer and i enjoy watchingher grow in knowledge each day. Carole haslooked after my books since the day i startedthe company and i must admit she can bequite scary, i’m glad she is on our side.

if you put together a party of interiordesigners, the first question asked is: “Areyou busy?” Our working lives are a bit likeactors and, like them, when busy, we reallyare busy. Time has to be well planned, especially as you need to be calm and incontrol. That’s our theme.

Monday mornings in my office, like in manyothers, should be about planning the weekahead but frankly after catching up on eachothers’ weekend of fun, we face the barrageof calls and emails from clients who havehad time to think over their projects. Theafternoon is usually packed with finishingthe mountain of paperwork that hasaccumulated over the week before. Who’dbelieve a designer’s life could have so muchpaper work?

Before i know it, it’s time for lunch with anew client who is beyond excitement abouther first marital home. And no ordinaryhome it is, being in Chelsea and oncebelonging to Oscar Wilde. Trying to daintilybalance sushi on chop sticks i take herthrough the logistics of carrying out t

AWeek in the Life of…Dan HopwoodEighteen years ago, when leading architect and designer DanHopwood started his own interior design studio, he decreed thatwork should start at 10am. He had ideas of sipping lattes in anelegant cafe, scooter parked close by, whilst idly sketching ideas forthe latest fabulous project… Think on Dan!

the design. Although much of ourconversation covers the details of herwedding dress, she does run a top hedgefund and is german; there is no doubt i haveto perform well.

On my return to the office i am told thatthe dining chairs that are due for deliveryon a project in Holland Park are delayed asthe fabric is damaged. Unfortunately, theupholsterers have cut the fabric despitebeing notified not to do so before checkingit. There is lots of finger pointing, especiallyas the fabric cost over £4000. Of course, myclients have organised a dinner party and somy own dining chairs have been whiskedaway for their pleasure. i will deal with whois to blame once the desired chairs havebeen delivered.

Then a sad moment; i have been informedthat the restaurant we designed in Mayfairlast year is about to be sold and anotherdesigner is going to transform it intosomething else. That’s the fickle commercialworld for you.

tuesdayTuesday morning starts uber early at 6amfor a tour of a classy spa in an hotel inLondon. i am working on a similar oneand, while there are no spa users there, the spa manager and i have a chance topoke around. We are in the manicure/pedicure room, she posing as the client andme as the manicurist, as we work out theergonomics. such rooms are very complexto design and difficult to get right. i am notallowed to take photos but, thank goodnessfor iPhones; i take a few sneaky pics.

Back on my trusty scooter and off to HollandPark to another a project, a mid Victorian

terraced house. My original brief here wasfor re-decoration and some fancy fittedfurniture. Before starting, feeling uneasyabout putting good work on top of bad, idecided to strip back some of the ceilings tosee what gremlins are hiding. i discoveredthat the electrics could set the house ablazeat any moment with one thin wire feedingthe entire upper three floors. And, antics ofprevious DiY bodging threatened the housewith collapse. To add to this difficulty thehouse is listed, the clients would not vacatethe house during works and the originalbudget now had to stretch to the remedialworks. sometimes i think that it would beeasier to pull a rabbit out of a hat. A year oni am now overseeing the final snagging andthe house is looking superb.

Having circled Hyde Park more than oncetoday, i return to the office. i have takenon heading the continual professionaldevelopment programme for the Britishinstitute of interior Design (BiiD). it’ssomething i feel strongly about as interiordesign now moves into the realm of aprofession. i give over a few hours a week topulling together an interesting programmeof talks for next year. Luckily, i can delegatemuch to a very experienced board of interiordesigners. We call and email each other todiscuss the possibilities, usually knowing ifthe selection is appropriate as we all wantto attend ourselves. Last week i attendeda BiiD meeting held at the RiBA to discussemployment law. Perhaps a dry subject butall those present felt glad to be so, myselfincluded. Thankfully, the fog has now beenlifted on that subject.

The day finishes off nicely reading an articleabout the re-launch of an old institutionwhich i worked on in Cambridge; Fitzbillies, which is a scrummy café/restaurant. t

Apparently there are queues around theblock to get in, perhaps because of mydesign, but more likely the skills of TimHayward, its owner and FT food critic.

WednesdayBack to the gym of course and then a stopoff to send a baby jacket to singapore, knitted by my mum. it’s for the newborn ofa client whose home i designed in Londonsome years ago. now married, they plan toreturn soon to London with the new babyand would like an even bigger home. Thelast place was a slick “babe magnet”. i thinkthe new place may have a slightly differenttone. Like many designers, i have my faithfulclients and this couple are amongst them. ilook forward to the prospect of dealing withpeople that trust me, know how i performand enjoy being part of the design process.

Returning back to the studio i receive anurgent call from a retired American architectwho is planning to return to London. i amworking on refurbishing a flat that i didfor him 13 years ago in Marylebone. Thatshould be fine, but having let him havepretty much his own way on the design, heis now panicking and wants me to re-assurehim. Here is my chance to move him intothe 21st century.

i don’t stay long in the studio. We arefurnishing a modern home for very youngclients in Holland Park. Apparently, all thecurtains should be rejected as the curtainmaker is incompetent. i call round. The ladyis concerned that the hems for the voiles areone inch different between the ground floorand the basement. i explain that the fabricis railroaded and the ceiling height differsbetween the two floors. Disaster is avoided.

she is now worried instead that thegardener has not cut perfect angles on thetopiary.

Back again in the studio and on the phoneto a heating engineer who is surveying aChateau in the south of France that i willwork on in the new Year. My French is ok,but my A level didn’t cover the vocabularyfor blocked flues and dodgy fuse boards. However, it has to be done so that we havea clean slate ready to create the rock ‘n’ rollhome that my clients want. My brief is thatit has to look amazing, yet looking like theyhaven’t tried.

i’ve had a call from Andreas von einsiedel, the well known interiors photographer. Many years ago my parents kindly letme design their flat in London. it wasphotographed by him and was my break. He would like me to sign off the photosagain so that he can so that he can publishthem worldwide. Wow! 18 years on and theproject is still relevant…

thursdayThursday started glumly. i have spentmany long evenings with a couple pullingtogether the designs for their new home inHampstead. They have now decided to go italone. i’m crestfallen, i had put a lot of love

into that project. i discover later that theyhad been approaching my suppliers, trying(without success) to obtain trade discounts.i am curious to see what the end result willlook like.

For the rest of the day i am bouncingbetween Kristina and Marc checkingdrawings and specifications. in between iam informing progress by e-mail to clients.Running a design business means i haveto be the glue, filling the gaps to createprojects that are seamless. Wrongly, iassumed the designer was the prima donna, but i doubt that this will ever be my luxury.

news from the spa. A smart out of towncompany is investing in it and would likeme to make my designs fit in with theircorporate image. How much of my workmight be stripped away? no matter, therewill be more money to spend.

it’s six and my colleagues are off home.i’m off to Wandsworth for an 8pm meetingwith a couple i have worked with before. They would like to add a basement to theiralready extensive house, with a gamesroom, a swimming pool and space for a new

bedroom for their teenage son. i understandtheir life style, after all i designed thisteenage boy’s nursery. They want somethingcool and funky in keeping with a ski chaletthey stayed in. i begin to doubt that there isa recession on.

Fridayi scoot over to the other side of town to givea talk at KLC design school. i’m a regularthere, often doing talks on inspirationand occasionally acting as guest tutor. irather enjoy observing students discoverthat interior design is not quite what theythought it to be. t

Within the first twomonths of opening, the programme at thenew Marlowe Theatrein Canterbury in Kent

featured ballet, opera, live bands, comedy, classical music and even some drama, with ice skating, workshops and poetrynights coming up. it demonstrates that, especially outside of London, theatres needto be flexible spaces that can host all kindsof entertainment and not just plays andmusicals.

Theatres have evolved considerablysince the 19th century when architectsand interior designers such as FrankMatcham were creating truly theatricalbuildings through a fantastic mix of stylesfrom Oriental and italianate through toRenaissance and Baroque. now it is notenough to have just fixed seating facing aproscenium stage, with a small foyer anda few bars for interval drinks. The MarloweTheatre may be named after a playwrightfrom over 400 years ago but it reflects thelatest thinking in design from Keith WilliamsArchitects. it is a new build, replacing theold Marlowe Theatre which started life as acinema in the 1930s. tThe Marlowe Theatre foyer

Within the impressive new 4,850 sq mbuilding, the main auditorium has a capacityof up to 1,200 over three tiers – overa quarter more than the old building –designed so that no seat is further than 25metres from the stage. This is a significantimprovement on many of the seats in theold auditorium which were up to 35 metresaway. The new 195 sq m Marlowe studio, with flexible-format seating for up to 150people, has been created to provide aspace for workshops, training and new andexperimental work.

The three-level foyer connects all the mainspaces to the auditorium. A processionalstaircase appears to float within the foyer, described as part-sculpture, part-furniture.its external faces are clad in black plasterwhile its internal surfaces are made fromblack American walnut and inset tubularstainless-steel handrails and integral lighting. The materials are referenced in the mainauditorium where the main surfaces areagain lined in strips of black Americanwalnut laid over dense plaster to give asubtly striated visual quality to the walls. Thistreatment also provides the necessary sounddiffusion as part of the acoustical design. Theconvex balcony fronts are constructed fromengineered pre-formed black walnut andform a broad horseshoe plan. Along with thewall surfaces, they give the sense of a highlycrafted timber internal space on a grandscale.

The auditorium seating, which wasdeveloped with seating suppliers PoltronaFrau has been clad in a bespoke fiery red/orange leather, making it look like bladesof colour against the darkness of theauditorium. The acoustic plaster reflectorsuspended from the ceiling above appears

as a series of dramatic folded plates.“Designed to reflect sound from the stageinto the depths of the auditorium, wehave emphasised its form with alternating, abstractly composed surface treatments ingrey and black to give a sense of the energybeing emitted from the stage,” Keith adds.

With three bars and the River Restaurant, the foyer opens up links to terracesoverlooking the River stour as well asviews towards Canterbury Cathedral.

The furniture and fittings of the theatre, which were specified by Keith WilliamsArchitects, include a suite of furniturepredominantly by eames but with someitems by Ronan & erwan Bouroullec andPatricia Urquiola, all supplied by Vitra. The£25.6m development was completed bymain contractor isg Jackson in October andwas the fourth realised theatre project forKeith Williams Architects which also createdThe Birmingham Rep, The Unicorn Theatre inLondon and Wexford Opera House in ireland.

Principal architect normanBragg, who worked on the Crucible at thestart of his career, recalls how that projectbroke with tradition by having a thrust stage, pioneered by the Chichester Festival Theatredesigned by Philip Powell and HidalgoMoya and opened in 1962. “in those days,it was seen very much as the way forwardin theatre, with the actors right out in frontof the audience like in their living rooms. But 40 years on, the proscenium style is stillwith us and shows no sign of changing.”

RHWL has its own Arts Team divisionspecialising in theatres and other artsvenues and it has worked on refurbishingmany 19th-century theatres – includingsome by Frank Matcham – as well asdeveloping new ones. One of RHWL ArtsTeam’s most recent projects is the WatersideTheatre in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, which opened last year, replacing the town’sold Civic Centre. The building’s architecture, with an undulating roof line and structuralghulam timber columns, was inspired by therolling hills of the Chilterns and its pine trees, explains norman, the project’s architect.inside, columns are set in a pattern to mirrorthe random scattering of trees in a forest.in the main auditorium, the wood of thebalcony fronts and side walls suggests thestacked timber of a wood yard.

While the main auditorium has a prosceniumstage, it has added flexibility from a largeflat-floor configuration in the stalls, allowingseats to be removed using motorisedelevators. it means the three-tier auditoriumcan have a capacity of either t

1,200 totally seated or 1,800 with standingin the stalls area – which can also housetables with up to 250 covers, served by akitchen and finishing pantry. “As with allbuildings, it is about future-proofing thetheatre for the next 60 years to enable allsorts of productions that have not yet beenconceived to be put on there,” normanexplains.

Under operator Ambassador Theatre group, the theatre has a programme of West endshows, comedy, dance, gigs, ballet andopera and also hosts community events, training, business meetings and evensports demonstrations. The theatre has alarge foyer covering all levels, with five

bars and a café, with lots of natural lightplus programmable lighting designed byarchitectural lighting specialist grahamPhoenix. A smaller theatre space for up to200 people features retractable bleacher-style seating and its own bar and foyer area. There is also a promenade area between thetwo performing spaces where exhibitionscan be put on. norman points out that, with these kinds of bars, restaurants andexhibition spaces, modern theatres oftenlook to attract people throughout the day,not just for performances. “it’s taking on adifferent approach to what they wanted inVictorian times.”

Afabulous wooden floor in nicholasKirkwood’s prestigious Londonshoe store has been finished andprotected using Bona’s waterbornelacquers. The floor was designed

by Richard Woods studio and installed andfinished by wood flooring and furniturespecialists, etloe, who consulted with interiorfit out company, snake skin Jacket, over the most appropriate way tofinish the surface.

Richard Woods’ ‘wrong wood’ designwas screen printed using oil basedpaints on to plywood strips whichwere then pinned and glued usingBona’s silane-based adhesive to aply subfloor. gaps were filled usingBona’s gap Master (black) to ensurecompatibility with the adhesive andtop coat.

This floor deserved a carefullyconsidered lacquer specification toensure an adequate level of surfaceprotection and the right look. Bona’stechnical team recommended using twocoats of Bona Mega, followed by threecoats of Bona Traffic – the company’s toughestlacquer – to protect the soft plywood flooringand the screen printed design. To achievethe required glossy look Bona Polish (gloss)was applied after the top coat of Bona Trafficlacquer had cured. A Bona spray Mop, the easyway to maintain a wooden floor and keep itlooking as good as new, is being used for dailymaintenance.

etloe is now working with Richard Woodsstudio to develop a flooring productbased on the specification for thenicholas Kirkwood store, which willallow their designs to be used morewidely in commercial environments.

or postcards.” However, he says that overthe past 15 years, it has been increasinglyworking on contemporary lighting, notjust for hotels and other historic buildingsbut also for super-yachts. At DorchesterCollection’s hotel Coworth Park in Berkshire,it worked with Martin Hulbert Design todevelop a chandelier above the receptiondesk which combines a brass sheet beatenby hand to look like leaves.

Dernier & Hamlyn also integrates the latestin energy-efficient lighting into projects. inits work on the restoration of the TheatreRoyal in newcastle and the City Varietiesmusic hall in Leeds, the company producedlighting that recreated the beauty of theoriginal fittings but used LeD technology.its work at the City Varieties, in partnershipwith Theatresearch, included refurbishingfour original sunburners and manufacturing

a new one in the same style as well asproducing new chandeliers, wall lights andceiling fittings for the auditorium, lobbiesand bar areas, all in the original 19th-centurystyle. However, the LeD technology meansthe lighting requires less than 1,000 wattsfor the whole theatre and makes it easier tomaintain.

The old and the new are combined in a newconcept from Kevin Reilly Lighting. A candlemade of high-temperature wax is carvedout and a bulb is inserted inside, creating apermanently “burning” source of soft light.Called the White Altar, they are embeddedwith electrical fittings that enable eachfixture to emit a warm glow throughout theday or night. “A light during the day needsto be minimal and sculptural but at night itshould be magical,” Kevin explains. He hasalso developed the concept for an elegant

collection of chandeliers, sconces, floorlamps, table lamps and outdoor lighting.

illuma, a specialist in creative and practicallighting, is developing new LeD productsincorporating the latest technology whichwill be launched at the interiors UK 2012show at neC Birmingham this month. itsmost recent projects include an installationfor jewellery brand Pandora at sonkaiJewellers in norwich, which used Arc 183metal halide downlights – a flexible solutionfor retail as the downlight can extendand rotate to light the verticals as well asstraight down. its colour rendering replicatesdaylight which is perfect for creating a freshcontemporary interior with reflective brightsurfaces and finishes. Lee Broomeach year, Lee Broom’s star shines everbrighter in the design world, and 2011 hasseen him rise to even greater heights. Hefounded his own company four years agoand has gone on to become one of the UK’sleading interior and product designers. so far,he has designed over 40 bar and restaurantinteriors across the UK and won nearly 20awards. in February this year, he openedhis first shop within The Bluebird in Chelsea,London, which he marked by creatingtwo new lighting products – the frostedDecanterlight and the Decanterlamp.

in May, he designed an exclusive collectionof parquetry-inspired furniture and lighting, called Parq Life, for UK design brandDeadgood!, which combined the traditionalherringbone pattern of parquetry flooringwith contemporary curves in furniture. inseptember, he unveiled his latest collectionat the London Design Festival, called salon.inspired by the curvaceous lines of 1930supholstery, with a hint of fashion fetishism, the collection features soft silhouettescontrasted and accentuated with modernstud detailing. in line with previous work, hehas used traditional British craftsmanship.

interior projects this year have includedthe personal shopping suite at Topman inOxford street, London, which echoes themood of a contemporary gentleman’s club.

it uses Lee’s signature pieces such as theCathode Console which acts as a neon-linedconcierge desk. since september, shoppersat Westfield stratford City in east Londonhave been able to see Lee’s large circularlighting in corridors off the main walkways– a dazzling array of fairground light bulbssurrounding a polished lacquered brass ringto create a halo of light.

To top all this, he has ended the year bywinning the title of British Designer of theYear in the elle Decoration awards, votedon by designers and the public. “it’s been abrilliantly busy year, and winning this awardis a wonderful way to end it,” Lee says.

My favourite in 2011 has to be the verymodest but highly creative Dazed andConfused retrospective exhibition. Havingbeen a seminal publication on the world offashion, music and street culture, the waythat the pages of this magazine – going backover the 20 years that it’s been published –spill out into the space is staggering.

Contrasted with the formal baroque interiorsof somerset House, a series of cuboid formsslither, forming slabs you walk over, archesand triangles you walk under and generallycreating a really dynamic trail through thespace. each of these forms has pages ofDazed and Confused magazine throughthe ages sandwiched underneath the glasssection on one side, with the other sidesbeing mirrored. A great exhibition, and agreat showcase for such a creative anddynamic magazine. We give it 10 out of 10.

Music is an essential part ofany leisure space, but it canbe a challenge to balancethe needs for a luxuriousand relaxing interior with

the hardware of a sound system. in top-endrestaurants, bars and other venues aroundthe world, this has been tackled by installing“invisible” loudspeakers from UK-basedAmina Technologies. They can regularlybe found in leisure environments where

clients want high-quality entertainment, information and communication systems butnot have the interior design corrupted byvisually obvious technology.

One of the most recent projects to useinvisible loudspeakers was the grill at theMandarin Oriental hotel in Kuala Lumpurin Malaysia. The luxurious interior wasdesigned by s2dio, a design company inKuala Lumpur founded by Ramlee Mahat,t

a Malaysian-born and London-traineddesigner. The elegant interior, complete within-built fireplaces, features islands of glasslacquered dark timber interspersed withinverted waterfall chandeliers that sparklelike ice crystals.

Ambient music is provided via Aminahidden speakers which lie cloaked beneaththe surface of the highly lacquered ceilingislands, making it impossible to see anymusic source. They provide a highlydispersed and even level of sound, filling theentire space with clear natural sound but ina way that makes it impossible to perceivewhere the sound is coming from.

This was achieved on site by first buildingplywood island structures onto the ceiling. The Amina product is set into the islandwith the active surface of the Amina panelset flush with the front of the plywood.it is tested and then the whole surface,

including the speakers, is veneered overand gloss-lacquered in situ. “The result istruly magnificent, blending the highestquality in modern exuberant Asian stylewith a graceful acoustic ambience to createa venue which fully matches the opulentlifestyle of the guests it attracts,” says Aminamanaging director Richard newlove.

Unlike traditional pistonic loud speakers,Amina speakers work in the same way asnatural musical instruments do, such as anacoustic guitar or piano: the vibration createdin the body of the instrument produces thesound. in these speakers, excitation driversset up tiny vibrations in the sound panelwhich transfer through the plaster, and thepaint or wallpaper that is placed on top of it,and then excite air molecules at the surface. These then excite other air molecules and soon until the sound reaches your ears.

Amina speakers were used as part of aproject at the Bingham, a boutique hotel in a

georgian grand house in Richmond in south-west London. Former store rooms wereconverted into a new events space calledthe garden Rooms, where Amina’s Plasterin-wall loudspeakers were installed into theceiling. An opening in the ceiling was madeand the speakers were mounted within thisopening. They were covered with 1mm to2mm plaster skim and then decorated over.

Upstairs in the main bar, two Amina AiW5 80 watt plaster-in-wall speakers wereinstalled and plastered over so that, oncedecorated, they are invisible. They werespecified by soundceilings, which specialisesin AV for the hospitality trade. “At theBingham, we believe a lounge bar should bea place to relax, enjoy a drink, and unwindin front of the fireplace,” says hotel managerisador gorgevik. “The room is the star, andwe wanted a solution that was sympatheticto the georgian features, be minimalist, butdeliver superb sound quality.”
