The college is managed by business experienced lecturers and academics who understand the importance of targeted and relevant qualifications. As a student, you are joining an intellectually lively community and you will find this to be an engaging and vibrant place to learn. So, whether you are making the transition from second-level; or battling with the prospect of learning after a hard day’s work or whatever your circumstances; Independent Colleges will be your home from home.

We have combined our resources to ensure that your experience with us is an excellent one. However, if you go through your Independent Colleges experience without being challenged, stretched or perhaps, without changing your mind about some long-held opinion, then we will not have succeeded. So, prepare to be challenged by us.

We are also committed to delivering programmes in the most convenient way for the learner who cannot attend classes on campus. To this end, our professional programmes are also delivered from outreach centre across Ireland in Cork, Limerick, Waterford and Galway.

I look forward to welcoming you on campus and like all my colleagues here, I am available to you at any time if I can be of assistance.

Library ResourcesThe library represents one of the most important resources available to students.

The Joshua Dawson Library

The Joshua Dawson Library is a vital and integral element of the academic experience at Independent Colleges and is furnished with a comprehensive collection of texts, journals and reports supporting the main academic sub-jects and related areas.

Research provision extends far beyond the College walls. As a modern research centre, the Joshua Dawson Library has invested heavily in online resources, carefully chosen to support learning and research.

The suite of subscribed online resources includes:

Westlaw.IE., Firstlaw.IE., Westlaw.UK., LexisNexis, Nexis and PEPS.

These resources provide extensive access within the subject areas of law, journalism and psychoanalysis. The library routes access through a main-stream provider, thereby ensuring reliability and continuity of access. Training in the use of these databases is provided by library staff at the beginning of each academic year and more informally, on request, throughout the year.

Library staff at the Joshua Dawson are always on hand to provide on-the-spot support in using online resources, sourcing material and general computer and research problems.

Standard opening hours are from 9am to 9pm Monday to Friday, and 12pm to 6pm on Saturdays.

However, due to the wide range of students studying at Independent Colleges the Library operates extended opening hours of 9am to 6pm on Saturdays and Sundays for more than half the year. Opening hours are indicated on the College network sites.

While most people begin their study of law with the idea of becoming a solicitor or barrister, a law degree also offers graduates the opportunity to use the skills acquired during their studies in other occupations throughout the world of commerce, the financial services industry, journalism and the Civil Service.

A law degree provides analytical, problem-solving and research-orientated training which is highly-valued by employers.

To facilitate student research, each student will be provided with complementary copies of the key legal text in each core module. Students will also obtain written and oral feedback on their performance in continuous assessment so that performance can be improved from stage to stage.

Internships

Independent Colleges’ Law School has secured a number of internships with some of the most prestigious law firms in Ireland and Great Britain. Selection is competitive, based on academic performance and interview. Successful candidates will spend one month working within a variety of departments in each firm.

LLB (Hons) in Irish Law (Level 8)The LLB (Hons) programme will be of interest to those who have a strong sense of justice (both legal and social), who possess a question-ing mind and enjoy identifying and applying solutions to problems.

Materials are geared specifically towards the Law Society of Ireland’s syllabus and designed with the FE1 examinations in mind.

Our tailored course manuals are the ideal companion piece to the weekly lectures and present the course material in easily digestible form.

Provision of this material in print form allows students to concentrate fully on the lectures as they are freed from the distraction of excessive note taking.

We offer individual tutorials and, by appointment, meetings with individual lecturers who can deal with queries as they rise.

Students have a facility to attempt questions from past examination papers, submit them to the College and have them corrected by the lecturers who will provide the class with general feedback on performance. Students will also receive a copy of their questions with personalised feedback.

Providing them with an ideal focused environment to prepare for examinations.

Helping them to reach their full potential when attempting the examinations.

Providing tailored course materials which are particularly useful in providing exam-focused material and the most recent case law and judicial developments.

For Non Law Graduates

This course benefits non law graduates by:

Providing a thorough grounding in all eight entrance examination subjects.

Imparting the level of knowledge and skills necessary to be successful in these demanding examinations.

Adopting an exam-focused style which enables students to concentrate their learning in order to have the best opportunity possible to excel in the examinations.

I knew I wanted to do a degree in journalism, and was thinking about several institutions in the Dublin area. When I came across the prospectus for Independent College I knew I had found the course I wanted to do. The course combines the theoretical and practical aspects of journalism in a concise and structured way, along with the internships in years two and three of the course at Independent News and Media. I believe that this gives students who wish to follow a career in journalism in Ireland a great starting point.

Who is this course for?

A strong interest in current affairs will be beneficial, and the course will also benefit those who hope to develop journalistic careers in specialist areas such as magazine journalism, music, film, arts, sports and travel. As this is a postgraduate programme, students on the course are expected to be strongly motivated and self-directed.

Assessment

Continuous assessment is the primary method of evaluating students’ performance on the MA in Journalism. A combination of article portfolios, academic papers, seminar presentations, multimedia production, examination and end-of-year dissertation tests students’ journalistic and academic skills development over the course of the programme.

Having attended two different colleges already to complete a BA and MA, I have yet to see anywhere with facilities as good as Independent Colleges. The newsroom for the journalism students is unrivalled. Every classroom has AV facilities that actually work and there is a large, clean and comfortable canteen/social area to take a break in. Not only this, the campus itself is as central a location as possible, the staff are friendly, warm and helpful and the lecturers are that and more. And of course the free newspaper in the morning makes life just that little bit better.

Patrick Fennelly, MA in Journalism 08/09

Partaking in the evening MA in Journalism at Independent College has been a rewarding challenge. It allowed me the opportunity to gain experience as a working journalist while at the same time teaching me the skills needed to become a capable one. The reputation of the College opened the doors for me in many of the national broadcasters such as RTE, Newstalk, and Today FM. It gave me the confidence to pursue a career that I always aspired to.

Marie Crowe, MA in Journalism 08/09

The MA in Journalism is an extremely practical course. The topics we cover are relevant and varied and we get to put all we have learned in the classroom to the test during the internship at Independent News and Media.

Úna Mulhall, MA in Journalism 08/09

The MA in Journalism course in Independent College is a very well run and organised taught Masters. The lecturers are very experienced and supportive, the college itself has excellent resources with new Mac computers, a newsroom and student intranet so you are never far from college as you can log in online. The course itself covers a wide range of journalistic styles, subjects and topics. The workload is quite heavy but with strong support and self-discipline I hope to meet all deadlines and graduate comfortably in October.

Course Description

The MA in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy is a taught clinical Master’s programme which offers an excellent grounding in psychoanalytic and psychotherapeutic theory and practice and a solid understanding and a practical appreciation of the discipline of psychotherapy.

The course also provides a comprehensive philosophy of the self and mind encompassing knowledge, ethics and analytic skills. The clinical components of the course include clinical case studies and clinical practice. Students are also required to engage in clinical supervision and in personal psychoanalytic psychotherapy or psychoanalysis.

Who is this course for?

This programme is designed for those who wish to practice as professional psychotherapists, either within the health services or in private practice. The course will also be of interest to those who work with people in other fields and who wish to apply psychotherapeutic principles to their working environments and employment practices.

About this Course

The course is oriented by the psychoanalytic tradition and is broadly divided into three separate but strongly interconnected strands – psychoanalysis, psychotherapy and philosophy. In addition to psychotherapeutic theory and practice, the course provides a comprehensive philosophy of the self and mind encompassing knowledge, ethics and analytic skills.

Students are required to attend lectures each week. Lectures are supported by seminars where students review material discussed in lectures and are encouraged to participate and debate course material and their clinical work.

The clinical component of the course comprises taught elements – clinical case studies and clinical practice – and students are required to be engaged in clinical supervision and in personal psychoanalytic psychotherapy or psychoanalysis. Each student is required to have weekly clinical supervision as soon as they begin clinical practice, usually before term one in Year One. The responsibility to arrange clinical practice or placement rests with the student, although the Course Directors will give support and direction in this regard.

Students may opt to take a daytime version of the course which is delivered over two days a week, or they may opt for the evening version which takes place over three evenings per week.

The course is recognised by The Association for Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy in Ireland (APPI).

MA in Psychoanalytical Psychotherapy (Level 9)This course offers an excellent graduate programme of studies in psychoanalytic psychotherapy and a comprehensive philosophy of the self and the mind.

Thesis

Psychotherapy aims to assist the individual to overcome the psychological difficulties that he or she might encounter in life. In order to do this, a psychotherapist must have a thorough understanding of how the mind works, how we adopt particular stances in relation to the world and other people, and how we develop particular interests.

Psychotherapy is a field that is rapidly developing in Ireland. Psychotherapists are employed in the health services and in many caring professional organizations which address mental health issues. Some psychotherapists also work in the prison service, dealing with both adult and young offenders. Many psychotherapists in Ireland work in private practice with clients who are referred by their GP or psychiatrist, or who self-refer in order to address particular issues in their lives.
