◦ Worked in exchange for transportation, food, drink, clothing, lodging, etc.

Unlike a slave, an indentured servant works only for a limited term

Recruited from the unemployed poor people in England

Laborers faced deadly conditions

◦ Word of the conditions spread

◦ Indentured servants decreased
