Brookdale Senior Living is a company that

operates senior's residences, established in

1978, and based in Brentwood, Tennessee.

The services offered are divided in three

categories: Independent Living, Assisted

Living and Memory Care. They are

considered to be the largest of this

organizations in the United States counting

with an approximate of 35,000 staff

members and 55,000 residents. They started

back in the 70s creating retirement

communities using as model five star hotels.

After merging with important firms through

the years they have become the principal

group running this kind of enterprise with

more than 550 communities in 36 states.

CLIENT: OWNER | BIOGRAPHY

Bill E. Sheriff joined Brookdale Senior

Living as Co-Chief Executive Officer in July, 2006. Right before he was working at the American Retirement Corporation as a Sherman and CEO. Bill received a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics from New

Mexico State University. He serves on the Board of Directors for a number of organizations including Belmont University. Bill came to this company through a merger of American Retirement Corporation with

Brookdale. There he was a CEO from 1984 until the time of the merger. He had before that a great amount of managerial experience working in leadership positions at Ryder Systems, for instance.

patient cognitive needs (memory loss, confusion, agitation) - Careful selection of (low stimulus)

colors/patterns/illumination/signage/privacy/acoustics in relation to patient’s cognitive needs.

- Inclusion of landmarks and benchmarks for patient’s orientation and legibility of the space.

- Small arrangements of seating areas to encourage socialization and communication.

- Careful selection of furnishings such as mirrors, table and floor lamps, TVs, radios and speakers etcetera in relation to patient’s cognitive needs.

USER PROFILE

The typical patient who would inhabit this space

would be suffering from Alzheimer’s disease which

is a disease that attacks the brain producing

cognitive impairment such as dementia, memory

loss, depression, mood swings, altered behavior, agitation and loss of energy.

Memory Care communities, which include Alzheimer’s and Dementia care facilities,

consist of specially designed living spaces and supporting environments for those who are living with cognitive challenges brought on by Alzheimer’s and dementia. The dementia care environment helps cue its residents in their daily lives. Areas of the

community are set up for safe engagement in activities such as gardening, kitchen work, and other life skills that provide purposeful and meaningful successful moments.

This space will take into

consideration all the characteristics that have been

stated through previous case studies about how a dementia care unit should be designed. For instance, considerations regarding flooring, colors, textures, materials, lighting,

spatial distribution, signage, way finding, acoustics and privacy.

•A morning mental workout with

discussions, brain stimulating games, and reminiscing. •Physical activity with a variety of opportunities like Brookdale’s Fitness B Fit program, group exercises, walking

programs, and dancing. •Daily life skills, which provide a sense of purpose, meaning and belonging. •Person centered programming, which uses the person’s social history information as a foundation. By honoring past interests

and involvements, these programs tap into current skills and support successful experiences. •We’re Keeping Our Promise personal notes are periodically sent to a family member to communicate their daily moments of

success.

Dining Program •Dementia friendly menus that provide diverse offerings that can assist in full engagement in the dining process regardless of the level of dementia. Selections are easy to manage, familiar and are

appealing to the senses. •Individualized dining assistance preserves the resident’s use of utensils as long as possible. •Small dining rooms with consistent seating, which encourages familiarity and socialization. Music, centerpieces, warm scented wash towels and

fresh linens enhance the dining experience.
