Executive Summary

Climate Change, Digitalization, Industry 4.0, Internet of Things are driv-ers of change that generate new challenges as well as new opportunities for manufacturing industries. One great opportunity in the sustainabili-ty context is that the availability of primary data can be increased drasti-cally along all life cycle phases.

Digital Twin In conjuntion with the physical product the Digital Twin will carry Life Cycle Information combining mandatory compliance information with information on environmental impacts already caused along the supply chain. This product-specifi c Life Cycle Information can be used, for exam-ple, for Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs).

Internet of Things provides primary data of the use phaseThe “smarter” products get with IoT the better the availability of prima-ry use phase life cycle data will become. Such data will help improve the next generation of a product. It can also help improve user communi-cation and user experience when used to inform consumers about how their user behavior can infl uence their environmental impact.

Live LCA Solution

Evaluate the energy effi ciency and the environmental impacts for each manufactured product and each process step within the production and along the product life cycle. This evaluation will be based on exist-ing data in a company, e.g. from energy monitoring systems, production planning systems, etc.

Roles & Users

Digitalization (IoT, Industry 4.0) drives the expectation for product specifi c energy and environmental information. Different roles request this information:

CEO

CEOsecure company brand value towards a sustainable future

Product Designerknow the impacts of product design to total life cycle

Plant Managerunderstand the real saving potential of reducing waste and defective parts

Sales Offi cerneed to know which burdens are linked to my products

Objectives

Live LCA started to meet these objectives:

Quickly access Life Cycle Information, e.g. EPD for specifi c products or orders

Increase the use of live data from production monitoring system to replace generic data

Systematically identify improvement potentials in energy and material use and environmental performance

Improve internal collaboration and communication for sustainable innovation

Include primary use phase life cycle information to enable life cycle innovation
