As mainframe workloads continue to increase while enterprise IT organizations are losing their most experienced mainframe developers, companies must incorporate mainframe applications into their mainstream cross-platform Agile/DevOps processes. The key to “mainstreaming” the mainframe is to provide non-mainframe developers with tools that look and feel like the ones used in distributed environments so that mainframe development is different only in syntax.

Topaz® Workbench provides an Eclipse-based IDE that enables developers with a variety of technical backgrounds to be quickly productive in a mainframe environment. Topaz Workbench can run independently or as a set of plugins that can be added directly to an existing Eclipse development environment or other Eclipse-based software.

This next-generation tool provides an integrated user interface from which to initiate Compuware’s industry-leading developer tools, Abend-AID, File-AID, Xpediter and Strobe, as well as non-Compuware products and distributed solutions. Technicians can use Topaz Workbench to flow seamlessly from task to task while developing and maintaining a complex mix of cross-platform applications. The solution also provides core z/OS functionality and other features that exploit the Eclipse framework to remove the esoteric nature of mainframe development.

An integration with Atlassian Jira Software enables users to capture faults and performance problems found via Abend-AID and Strobe. The Jira issue also includes an Xpediter debug configuration that developers can then use to quickly debug and resolve the issue.

INTELLIGENT SOURCE CODE EDITOR

This powerful, multi-language, multi-platform source code editor streamlines the creation and maintenance of application programs. Language-specific aids are available for mainframe COBOL, PL/I, HLASM and C Language. Additionally, this editor can emulate several other industry-standard editors, including ISPF.

Developers can also group logical collections of source code into Java-like projects, allowing them to manage both their mainframe and open-systems code in similar manners. In addition, they can create mainframe online projects so the code is still retained on the mainframe.

Additionally, developers using SonarSource SonarLint can get on-the-fly feedback on code quality and adherence to standards as they edit mainframe source code.
