International projects on the rise

Bertram SalzingerCEO of inconso AG

The 12th International Trade Fair for Distribution, Handling and Information Flow, LogiMAT, is getting closer. Between February 25 and 27, more than 1,000 exhibitors will be coming together and present their current developments and solutions for more efficiency in intralogistics. In this context, inconso is present for the eleventh year running with its innovative products – among which will be the inconsoSDS (Shipping & Dispatch System) for a smooth shipping processing as well as the mobile application inconsoMIS (Mobile Information System) which enables to keep track of current logistics key figures at anytime and anywhere from your tablet or smart phone.

Along with the typical inconso business related to logistics software solutions, the extended offering portfolio in the field of service has led to increased growth. With Full Managed Services, we assist our customers in their increasing demand to fully concentrate on their respective core business and have all issues related to the IT operations of the logistics solution addressed by inconso – from application support up to computer operations and hardware services. These developments have notably contributed again to a high-growth and successful 2013. According to provisional figures, the total revenue has increased to nearly € 54 million, with a return remaining in double-digit figures.

With its ca. 500 employees now in Germany and France, inconso continues to be the leading player for logistics software in Europe. In this context, the number of international projects both in European countries and beyond has considerably increased.

The growing internationalization of logistics requires adaptable solutions which can be tailored to the most

different demands of various countries and industries. However, the increasingly heterogeneous employee structure requires more flexible solutions in Germany as well. Next to the permanent employees, the number of contract, seasonal and unskilled workers of different nationalities is constantly growing. The demographic change and the increasing shortage of specialists is accelerating this development. Read from page 6 about the efficient ways inconso offers to promptly react to the demographic change and its challenges thanks to its logistics software solutions, which can be tailored and configured according to the different demands of every single employee.

Also, find out more about two of our current international projects. In Tuscaloosa, Alabama (USA), BLG Logistics Inc. controls a Plant Consolidation Center (PCC) with inconsoWMS Automotive. Here, the core activity is the processing of the Just-in-Sequence and Just-in-Time delivery from currently ten suppliers directly into the production of a German automobile manufacturer. The motor oil manufacturer Comma Oil headquarter is located in the English port city of Gravesend. The new Warehouse Management System, inconsoWMS X, has been running in the logistics center since December 2013. The project has been mainly carried out by the French inconso team and was already increasing the efficiency and seamless process operations in the first weeks.

Baur Fulfillment Solutions invests in inconsoWMS X

The Upper Franconian fulfillment specialist BFS Baur Fulfillment Solutions has commissioned inconso AG with the implementation of inconsoWMS X as a new and uniform warehouse management system.

Since mid-2011, several clients have already switched over to this large-scale project. The last customers will change over to the new solution by February 2014. In order to further extend its excellent market position as fulfillment service provider with this investment in the seven-figure Euro range, BFS Baur Fulfillment Solutions guarantees its current developments and simultaneously prepares itself optimally for the new demanding processes.

Currently, the company runs the cross-industry logistics processing for end customers, shops and large customers with a volume of over 28 million good movements a year. The sites for storing, shipping and returns handling in B2C and B2B transactions are built up differently: they include a partially automated warehouse and a manual one, which are now uniformly managed and controlled by the inconsoWMS X system. ■

GEA Westfalia Separator: inconso implements SAP EWM

In the context of a large project, GEA Westfalia Separator Group has built two new halls for production, storage and shipping. The new storage area is intended for the material supply for assembling and its subsequent processes, the supply of spare parts for the central service warehouse and the shipping of spare parts directly to the customer. GEA Westfalia Separator Group has entrusted inconso AG with the implementation of SAP EWM (Extended Warehouse Management) for the warehouse management and control of the internal transports on the plant site.

GEA Project Manager Dieter Vennewald explains: “The construction of the two new production halls was an excellent opportunity to make our processes and software systems more efficient and to further harmonize the system landscape. With inconso, we have chosen a special partner in the development and implementation process who is able to provide us with a widely documented logistics and SAP know-how with high quality.” ■

ZITEC relies on inconso SAP EWM solution for new logistics center

ZITEC Industrietechnik GmbH has started the first operational phase with a new logistics center at its headquarters. Following the completion of construction in 2013, its 12,500 square meters will house, among other things, an automatic small parts warehouse with a location capacity of 80,000 containers, a 12 meter high pallet warehouse and a three-story shelving system in the future.

ZITEC decided to introduce a Warehouse Management System based on SAP for managing the existing storage areas and the areas from the new logistics center. inconso will take over the implementation of SAP EWM and its connection to the existing ERP system. Furthermore, the SAP EWM will be connected via an interface to the supply chain software for controlling the intralogistics system with an automatic small parts warehouse. Following the switch to SAP ERP planned at ZITEC, inconso will also carry out the connection of SAP EWM to the SAP ERP. ■

Hamm Reno: More efficient shoe mail-order with inconso

In summer 2013, the shoe retailer Hamm Reno Group (HR) changed over the picking and packaging processes to Radio Frequency (RF) in order to optimize the processing of individual pair picking. This changeover was carried out by inconso, the software and consulting company for logistics solutions. Shoes are now picked in one picking run for several subsidiaries using Radio Frequency (RF) and finger scanners and then distributed to the various stores via a new automatic sorter provided by the company Optimus from Netherlands. After sorting, articles are packaged via Radio Frequency into shipping cartons for the different stores. The new technology SAPUI5 is used here on tablets to show most of the information through the usual SAP representation. ■

Seifert Logistics Center Malsch with inconsoWMS AutomotiveAs part of their longstanding partnership with one of the leading automotive manufacturers, Seifert Logistik Dienstleistung GmbH, Ulm, built a logistics center at the site in Malsch. To deliver production highly efficient and smooth, Seifert applies inconsoWMS Automotive. The system was implemented after adjustments on location-related requirements as standard solution for production synchronized logistics processes. In addition, inconsoLSA, an automated accounting system for provided logistics services, was implemented. Essential for placing the order was the successful use of this system in several other logistics centers of the automotive manufacturer. ■

MORE AND MORE COMPLEX LOGISTICS MEETS MORE AND MORE SOPHISTICATED USERS Customizing of IT systems in logistics as an answer to the demographic change

The famous catchwords that comes into play with the demographic change and its economic consequences reaching from an aging society and insufficient talent development with new generations through to a shortage of skilled workers. Last but not least, the challenges involved affect the logistics industry as well. The development described above contrasts particularly with the demands resulting from

the rising globalization, more complex systems and non-transparent networks. This imbalance can countered with adjustable and user-friendly IT solutions with individually tailored functions and transparent control centers.

Where on the one hand, daily tasks are simplified, sped up and extended with alternative options thanks to technical developments. On the other hand, a big part of our society is reaching its limits due exactly to these innovations. Obviously, progress is great: you can order a present with just one click, pay bills via online banking and regulate the home heating via a remote network – especially smart phones make life easier. But, is that true for all? The “Y generation” – having grown up with the internet and smart phones – finds it easy to live in the mobile and

networked world, no doubt. However, for those who saved their programs on a 3.5 floppy disk, typed letters on a writing machine or simply are no technology lovers, new developments bring only a limited benefit in their working life.

//// Less and less time for more and more complex demands

Logistics is at the core of this issue: while customers can rely on same-day-deliveries or simple return handlings, employees must react to these challenges within an ever-shorter time and on a larger scale. The full impact of the demographic change causes increasingly more complex systems to be operated more and more by IT remote users – no matter if it is an extended network or logistics control or “just” the operation of a hand scanner during picking.

//// Simple designed interfaces

The best way to reduce error sources in logistics is to design as easy as possible interfaces between complex systems and users. This is also the only way to face the consequences of the increasing shortage of skilled workers in the logistics industry. One of these implications is the high employee fluctuation – employees change their job increasingly often due to the various reasons. As a result, the on-boarding processes should not be too long and complex. Even new employees should be quickly able to use the IT systems in logistics, so that they can work efficiently and correctly. At the same

Dr. Gerd WintermeyerMember of the Board, inconso AG

inconso

time, by individually adjusting the freedom of action in the usage of the systems, the qualified staff can take over additional tasks and responsibilities, “grow” with the system and be more motivated to engage in a long-term employment.

//// Employees‘ individuality in the foreground

Individuality is the current buzzword: But here, this is not referring to customized processes, but to adjustments tailored to the individual employees. Depending on the employees’ qualification and experience, there must be the opportunity to individually determine their freedom of action and decision-making. In this way, at the beginning of activity for example, the IT system can narrow down the action opportunities in order to enable the employee to adhere to the standard process as much as possible. As the employee gains experience, the system can be configured in such a way that he can be given more room to maneuver. As a result, the systems grows thanks to the skills of the employees. This also makes it possible to react to an increasing volatility. Such flexible IT systems enable the company perfectly adaptable to outsourcing or in-sourcing processes.

“Employees should be quickly able to use the IT systems in logistics, so that they can work efficiently and correctly.“

Dr. Gerd Wintermeyer, Member of the Board, inconso AG

inconso

//// Personal skills are taken into account

This is not just referring to a further qualification of the single employees, but also to their individual preferences. In intralogistics, very basic qualities can be taken into account. For example, while the visually talented worker usually picks using Radio Frequency, the one with good auditory skills resorts to the pick-by-voice technology – personal competences are recognized and optimally used. Adjustments can be performed up to the smallest details of the user interface and this enriches the system with customized IT functionalities.

//// Risks in the control center

Much more importance is attached to such adaption options in logistics monitoring. Due to insufficient experience, a control center employee often does not exactly know what consequences can result from smaller adjustments or interventions in logistics processes. So,

for example, if a storing-in process is stopped due to technical problems, there will probably be an empty truck on the ramp that cannot be loaded at the end of the day. In this context, an extensively thought-out logistics system can help prevent such events. The first step to take in this direction is a simple description of complex interactions – the magic word here is “transparency”.

//// Simulate special cases

A clear overview on the intralogistics actual condition is essential – but not sufficient for ensuring a continuous and smooth process. In order to enable the employee to monitor the implications of his decisions or interventions, it is necessary to integrate simulation tools in the system. The entire material flow can already be simulated before the Go-Live of a warehouse, so that the employees are better prepared in case of complications and are able to address them in the warehouse control process. To meet these demands, inconso provides an Add-on: inconsoSIM.

/ 8 // 8 /

inconso

//// Control from anywhere

On the manager level, systems that are more complex correspond to demands that are more complex. The warehouse manager, who is always present in the logistics center, is no longer a reality. He travels a lot – not only within the warehouse between goods receiving and goods issue, but also to the different logistics sites. In order to address possible complications or bottlenecks in a quick and comfortable way in the warehouse control, a mobile control center solution is essential as it makes it possible to keep an eye on the current situation from anywhere and at any time. This can be done with inconsoMIS, the inconso App for the visualization of logistics key indicators. The manager can always have a better overview on the logistics processes from anywhere, can quickly identify possible changes in the logistics process and, if needed, contact the control center.

//// “One size doesn’t fit all” applies to employees as well

Whether they are managers, control center employees or warehouse workers – one thing applies to all intralogistics staff members: “One size doesn’t fit all”. Although this statement is often used in other contexts with reference to the various demands of individual customers, today, this refers much more to the employment specific demands. Here, many different factors play an important role: from age and education, nationality, work experience, position or individually different preferences concerning working methods. In this context, an IT system can be decisive to tap the full potential for an efficient logistics process. Starting with the hardware, single tools and software Add-ons through to cross-site software solutions that provide the employees transparent processes, inconso can fulfil all these demands. ■

A clear overview on the intralogistics actual condition is essential – but not sufficient for ensuring a continuous and smooth process. The integration of simulation tools in the system can be helpful.

inconso PUTS SOME OIL IN COMMA’S ENGINEComma Oil decided to implement the warehouse management system inconsoWMS X to modernize its storage processes in Gravesend

Comma Oil concentrates its core activities in Gravesend, a small town in the southeast of England. There, we can find the headquarter, the production plant as well as the logistics centre. The blender of motor oils supplies its whole distribution network in England and in the world from these warehouses, located right off of the production lanes.

Comma Oil was established in 1965 in England. The company produces and distributes engine oils & car care products. Early on, it focused on the automotive aftermarket vehicle servicing sectors. Today, Comma Oil enjoys an enviable reputation of product and services quality and is a major player in the global automotive aftermarket, supplying products for PVL vehicles and CVL. Comma Oil’s catalog gathers a wide range of 800 different articles references.

The warehouse in Gravesend is the starting point of all the products distributed by Comma Oil. 80 % of the products stored there come from Comma’s own production lines.

The remaining 20 % are brought by external providers.

//// Physical organization of the warehouse

The storage capacity in Gravesend amounts to 6,000 pallets. It is organized in three distinct areas located in three different buildings. Their construction followed the evolution of Comma’s logistical needs. The first one, right against the production area, contains a re-work area for all the retuned products. This area is also used for the storage of standard pallets and small barrels (60 L). The second building houses the core logistical

activities of Comma Oil with the receiving and shipping docks. There is also a cross-dock area for products being shipped to other Comma Oil warehouses located in the UK and Europe. These warehouses are dedicated for the products supplied to large clients across their European networks. The third warehouse was the last built. This was constructed to house a large range of dangerous goods, which is supported by a fire protection system (sprinkler system). Outside, but under a shed, we find a storage area dedicated to the 200 L barrels. Weather resistant goods are kept in the outside storage area.

//// Origin and description of the project

Implementing a warehouse management system was not an easy decision to make. 10 years ago, the site was fitted with a WMS, but unfortunately the solution suffered with a high error rate leading to its removal. Since then, the warehouse has been driven with a simplified SAP tool that enables the printing of picking lists. Many had doubts about the implementation of a new system, especially those who had taken part in the removal process of the previous solution. Under these conditions, choosing a new system was a big challenge. First, to convince the sceptical ones. Second, to find the solution that would best answer the needs of Comma Oil.

Comma Oil & Chemicals finally selected the warehouse management solution inconsoWMS eXtended. The choice was based on various criteria. Comma Oil was looking for a solution compatible with its SAP ERP. When selecting inconso, Comma Oil does not need

to find a separate SAP consultant, which represents a significant savings in the project. inconso has been a SAP expert for many years and has a special team available. Therefore, the first challenge was to replace the existing SAP module with inconsoWMS X. inconso took care of the migration of the master data and of the transfer of the client orders and picking lists to the WMS using standard SAP IDoc interfaces.

//// Project Highlights

A second important challenge was the traceability of the goods, which was nearly inexistent until now. inconso introduced processes to trace batches and managed receiving and shipments, based on the FIFO model. These processes should manage the inventories and bring a better transparency and traceability. Another difficulty comes from the configuration of the warehouse being a double-deep racking system. The picking location is on the ground level, which has a pallet behind it at the same level. For health and safety reasons, it is forbidden to pick an article from a pallet behind

the picking location. Because of the FIFO method, inconso had to create a series of rules with its tool BLI (Business Logic Interpreter) in order to organize double replenishments and to manage the pallet behind the picking location.

inconso also set up processes for the receipt of the production components. A specific process was implemented to receive these products in the same way as the finished products, but with totally different information. The processes are completely transparent for the user and the component management is easier.

To manage the tasks of the persons in charge of the shipment, inconso connected an interface between inconsoWMS X and the Norbert Dentressangle TMS, the carrier in charge of the transportation of the goods to the distributors or the final clients. This interface enables the printing of shipment labels directly at the docks, which saves time.

The order management per customer was also implemented. Since the carrier interface was set up, the

/ 11 /

inconso

grouping of the pallets to the same customer had to take place earlier in the process. Before, the person in charge of loading the truck had to look for every single pallet among all those that were ready. This was a tedious and time-consuming process. Now, each pallet prepared for the same client is placed on a customer-dedicated lane while all the others are being prepared. When all of them are ready for loading, a dialog informs the operator that he can launch the closing of the order. When this is achieved, a transport document is sent to Norbert Dentressangle with the composition of the order (number of pallets). The labels are printed and put on the pallets that can then be loaded on the trucks. This represents a considerable savings of time, an optimization of movements for the operator and reduces the error rate.

//// Project management

Comma Oil commissioned inconso with the installation of its solution at the end of 2012. Three month later, the project could start. After several weeks of functional specifications on site and the configuration of the system by the inconso team in their office in Lyon, the system could be tested and validated at the end of August. The system is now ready for the Go-Live. Comma Oil decided to delay it until early December after the seasonal peak of activity. The sales of winter products such as anti-freeze liquids grows significantly during fall and Comma preferred not to start using the WMS before the end of this period. ■

„WE AIM TO BUILD A LONG-STANDING RELATIONSHIP WITH INCONSO“ Interview with Paul de Freitas, Production analyst at Comma Oil

inconso: What are the reasons that most influenced you to choose the warehouse management system, inconsoWMS eXtended?

Paul de Freitas: After inconso’s first presentation, we realized that we could get more out of the software than was set out in our original scope. Ottavio Rivelli is an expert – he answered all our questions and showed us the full flexibility of the system. It was really a highlight of the software and inconso’s professionalism.

The package of inconso does more than we expected and can be easily adapted to encompass future growth. We have been shown how to work the system ourselves so that if we build more warehouses, we can do it in-house (of course, inconso are there for support).

inconso: When a company decides to change its warehouse management system, or like you, to implement a warehouse management system for the first time, the consulting and implementation partner is at least as important, if not more, than the solution. What do you think about your partnership with inconso?

Paul de Freitas: The blueprint phase was a challenge to us. We really had the opportunity to look at our business and operations as a whole, from how we receive products, move products and finally dispatch products out of the warehouse.

The blueprint phase was detailed and professionally done. For instance, if we had any question in the morning, inconso would find

and provide us with an answer by that afternoon. Each day, we got to review what we had done the previous day and make any adjustments if necessary.

inconso: How does the future look like for Comma Oil? Do you already have an idea of how this implementation will change the activity of Comma Oil?

Paul de Freitas: Overall, we aim to build a long-standing relationship with inconso and should all go to plan, they will be back as we continue to expand and develop our business. We expect the software to really improve our efficiency throughout the warehousing and enable us to cope easily with greater business demand. ■

inconso SUPPORTS SYNCHRONOUS SEqUENCED SUPPLY BLG manages the supplier logistics center in Tuscaloosa, Alabama (USA) with inconsoWMS Automotive

BLG Logistics Inc. set up a supplier logistics center (SLC) right next to an assembly plant. This SLC manages the delivery of products from 10 current suppliers directly into the production of an established automobile manufacturer. The IT processes of these logistics processes are managed through the industry specific warehouse management system, inconsoWMS Automotive from inconso AG. inconsoWMS Automotive maps Just-in-Sequence and Just-in-Time deliveries.

On altogether 7,500 m ² in the SLC Tuscaloosa contracted by several automobile suppliers sequence delivery scopes are processed since 2010 for the first time. BLG operates several SLCs worldwide and has extensive experience in the supplying of assembly plants. At the Böblingen site for example a production plant is supplied sequentially with cable sets; the IT control has been running here with inconsoWMS Automotive for many years.

//// Just-in-Time and Just-in-Sequence

Along with the storage and handling services, BLG service in the Supplier Logistics Centers also includes pre-assemblies in the sequencing, quality controls as well as sequence exact line supply. inconso supports BLG with the integral process management as well as the coverage of customer specific processes in the IT systems. Since the beginning of 2010, the optimal processing of Just-in-Time (JIT) and Just-in-Sequence (JIS) deliveries is guaranteed in the SLC Tuscaloosa.

//// Integration of assembly processes

The synchronous sequenced supply of the production of SUV’s is the main focus in the SLC. The sequence rack creation is carried out based on forecast data and call-off impulses. inconsoWMS Automotive manages the integration of assembly processes in the context of the sequencing. The majority of the processes are controlled by inconsoWMS Automotive are dependent on production, i.e. supply errors would lead to a „line stop“ meaning the immediate stopping of the production line. The fact that the SLC coordinates the hourly deliveries to the production plant with the smallest lead time of 2.5 hours from call-off until delivery receipt in the plant in the USA contributed to the decision to use inconsoWMS Automotive in Tuscaloosa.

Along with the sequencing, inconsoWMS Automotive manages the Goods Receiving process with checking and booking functions, the storage and inventory management and, in the narrower sense, also the loading and the dispatch to the receiving plants. The dispatch is managed using route plans that are pre-configured in the system. With this, the SLC achieves a throughput of 100,000 load units per year in Goods Receiving and Goods Issue altogether.

//// Interfaces to suppliers

Furthermore, the scope of inconsoWMS Automotive operation also covers the replenishment management and the functions for the empty goods management through which the return shipment of the empties to the suppliers is also organized. In addition, the software offers interfaces to suppliers and receivers based on the VDA norms.

The specific Goods Issue processing contained in the software solution is outstanding for the automotive industry. Depending on receiver and the corresponding delivery type, it offers different call-off processes. It is possible so to not make only delivery call-offs possible on daily basis, but also to support several call-offs every day and the product synchronous JIS call-offs. inconsoWMS Automotive can service specific LSS telegram call-offs as well. Furthermore, the processing of stock takes, pre-assembly processes and the progress number management are also integrated into the functional scope of the software.

Of course, the processing of stock takes, pre-assembly processes and the progress number management are also integrated into the functional scope of the software.

//// Go-Live overnight

Going from 0 to 100 percent overnight, the system was started during the Go-Live in January 2011. Regarding this, BLG Logistics Inc. president Steven Markham was satisfied: „It was by far one of the smoothest roll outs which I have ever experienced. BLG Logistics Inc. has a highly developed and thought-out IT system thanks to the IT support in Germany and inconso AG.“

BLG Logistics Inc. was founded in 2004 as a 100 percent subsidiary of the BLG LOGISTICS Group. The corporation has its headquarters in Atlanta with a branch is in Tuscaloosa, Alabama (USA).

BLG LOGISTICS stands for international networks in the business areas of automobile, contract and container logistics. The corporate group provides more

than 16,000 jobs at 100 locations. In 42 locations BLG offers with 2,500 employees its automotive logistics customized planning and management of complex logistics processes associated with the management of all goods and information flows.

//// Tailor-made logistics solutions

The tailor-made logistics solutions for the various requirements of customers have three basic elements in the implementation: the operational process, the individual IT components and process management. Also, the design and conduct of operational logistics for the customers follow a consistent scheme with the elements: designing processes, process control, taking responsibility and building trust. Thus sets the BLG on solid and long-term customer relationships. ■
