General course information

University courses (UK) These provide the basic element for acquiring knowledge within the International Business Ad-ministration study. These courses adopt interactive teaching methods as well as new media for present-ing specific content and also for student analysis. University courses begin with an examination. At the beginning of each semester, teachers inform stu-dents adequately on the course objective, contents and methods, as well as on the contents, assessment criteria and mode of course examinations. In order to reflect different layers of knowledge and contents, as well as to vary the extent of students’ involvement in the course, university courses are divided into three different kinds: Introductory university courses (EK)An introductory university course serves to introduce students to the contents, methods and ways of practi-cally applying a new subject area. Introductory uni-versity courses do not require any specific knowledge and are to illustrate to the students the importance of the subject within their study prerequisites.

Advanced university courses (FK) The aim of advanced university courses is specialisa-tion in a subject area. Generally speaking, they can only be attended once the corresponding introductory university courses have been completed or an accord-ing examination set in the curriculum has been taken.

In-depth university courses (VK) Deepening university courses serve to provide in-depth methodological and subject-related abilities on a specific area that is especially important for solving practical problems. Deepening university courses build on the contents of either introductory or advanced university courses and can be attended only after their completion. Under certain approved circumstances, they can also be attended in paral-lel. Active participation by the students and their involvement in teamwork are important aspects of deepening university courses.

Seminars (SE) are courses at which the purpose is scientific discussion. Attendants are asked to make oral or written contributions in which they deal, on their own, with a subject and then present the re-sults in the class. Attention shall be paid to acquiring independent literature research skills and an appeal-ing presentation style.

But so-called “Blocklehrveranstaltungen” (“Block” = course that is offered just during a few days of the semester) are also offered at our university. When choosing these courses please be aware of the fact that such block courses may collide with other courses.

Kernfachkombination or short KFK: A “Kernfachkombination” consists of a certain amount of modules that have to be taken by domes-tic students. A module consists of different courses. You, as an exchange student, can choose one course out of a module but courses at this level are usu-ally very complex and demanding, some courses will even state prerequisites for you to enter! Please, always check the course information on the homep-age of each chair in a certain field of study! A lot of teachers use e-learning in their courses! Please read more about e-learning in “IT-Services at the University of Vienna”.

Special course for incoming exchange stu-dents

There is offered a special course for incoming exchange students. The course name is “Business German” (course number varies from semester to semester). The course is worth 4 ECTS-credits for the two hours per semester course.

To follow this course you have to have a good Ger-man knowledge at level B2 at least of the common European reference framework for languages. It is no beginner’s course.

For this course you can sign up via the univis-online system but you don’t have to put points on it! As a Business exchange student you are allowed to follow the course anyway!

German beginner’s courses you can attend at Inno-vationszentrum Universität Wien GmbH: http://deutschkurse.univie.ac.at/dkhttp://deutschkurse.univie.ac.at/dk

1.) Seminars (SE): Usually exchange students are not recommended to take seminars because they often do not fulfil the specific requirements for attending a seminar. Austrian students are only allowed to follow a semi-nar if they have successfully followed two advanced courses in the specific area (8 ECTS-credits in general). In the seminar there will be consolidated the knowledge gained in the courses ahead. There has to be prepared a seminar paper and this has to be presented to the other classmates. Usually there will be questions by the classmates and the teacher that have to be answered during the presentation. Therefore it is recommended to be able to speak ei-ther German or English (depending on the language of instruction) at an intermediate level at least, to be able to answer to the questions properly.

If it is absolutely necessary for the exchange student to follow a seminar in Vienna, then you have to ask the teacher/professor for admittance. We kindly ask you to write an e-mail to the professor in charge of the seminar and inform him/her what previous knowledge you have in this area. It may be pos-sible that you have to proof your knowledge with some document. Therefore please take a transcript with the courses that you already did at your home university with you to Vienna. Sometimes it may be necessary to have a course description of a certain course from your home university.

ATTENTION It is absolutely NOT possible to take the Seminar in “International Personnel Manage-ment” with Prof. Fabel!

2.) For the attendance of certain advanced courses there are certain pre-requisites needed. Please read the information in the online course catalogue and on the homepage of the chairs concerning prereq-uisites carefully! We suggest bringing a transcript of the courses already attended at your home univer-sity with you to show it to the teachers in Vienna, if necessary.

3.) The Kernfachkombination (core course module) KFK International Marketing and its courses will be taught in English and the exams are also in English. However, some of the courses require that students have a sound knowledge of German (around B2) so that they can successfully complete relevant project work.

The courses for which knowledge of German IS required are: International Marketing Research Teil 1 (WS)International Marketing Research Teil 2 (SS)Advanced Topics in International Marketing (SS)International Marketing Seminar (WS)

For the following courses NO knowledge of German is necessary:International Marketing Teil 1 (WS)International Marketing Teil 2 (SS)International Marketing Strategy Simulation (SS)International Data Analysis (WS)

Prerequisites (at a minimum) for following Interna-tional Marketing courses for exchange students:

International Marketing Teil 1, International Mar-keting Research Teil 1, International Marketing Strategy Simulation, International Data Analysis: Methods & Interpretation: at least one introductory marketing course

International Marketing Teil 2, Advanced Topics in International Marketing, Seminar in International Marketing: at least one international marketing course (not ANY marketing course)

International Marketing Research Teil 2: at least one marketing research course (not ANY marketing course)

Please note that the same course should NOT be accepted as fulfilling multiple prerequisites for dif-ferent courses. For example, if a student has only completed an introductory marketing course this would qualify as satisfying the prerequisites for International Marketing Teil 1, International Marketing Research Teil 1 and International Marketing Strategy Simula-tion but should not be accepted as satisfying the prerequisites for, say, International Marketing Teil 2 or Advanced Topics in International Marketing. Similarly, if a student has completed a marketing research course this would satisfy the prerequisites for taking International Marketing Research Teil 2 but not for International Marketing Teil 2 or the Seminar.

3. How to proceed?

19Registration to Courses

Course registration has to be made online!

Distributing points(“Auction-system”): The more points you set the higher the chance that you will be accepted to the course. The registration system provides you with 1000 points at the beginning of each semester. You will only see the points when you are doing your first course registration. You can use those points to “bid for” the courses you would like to take. According to this, and to your per-sonal preference, you should distribute all your 1000 points. For some courses you don’t have to give points, they are specially marked in the system.

Once the registration period did end the students will then be listed according to their given points, with the first getting a place within the desired course until the course is full.

But even if you do not manage to get a place in a desired course via the registration system, you can: • register for another additional course with the same topics at a different time (if offered) in the second registration period. • go the first lesson or you can go to the teacher directly or write him/her an e-mail, telling that you are an exchange student and then the teacher should also accept you. • register for any other course where places are left in the second registration period.

Therefore you can self-download your transcript from the UNIVIS website and forward it to your university or you print it and forward it then to your univer-sity.With the UNIVIS a transcript of records will be issued with all the courses that you have done at the Univer-sity of Vienna, ECTS-credits included. Some of the teachers deliver the grades at some later stage. If necessary, we ask you to inform the teachers, at the end of the semester at the latest, that you will need the grade earlier than the foreseen dates. Then the grades can be put into the system in time.

On the transcript there will NOT appear the German language courses from other institutes! For these lan-guage courses you will receive an independent transcript of the Innovationszentrum Universität Wien GmbH!
