It was originally performed by African Americans and was influenced by the musical sounds and rhythms brought by slaves (schiavi) from West Africa. Thanks to the invention of the radio and the gramophone player, it was soon heard all over the world. Jazz is a blend (miscela) of Spanish and African music from Cuba, together with other influences. It is known for its free use of styles and rhythms. Unlike previous forms of music, little of the music is written down: jazz musicians improvise and invent throughout their performances. All types of instruments are played in jazz music, including the piano, guitar, drums and brass instruments (ottoni). Jazz really took off (decollò) in the 1930s. This was when people started dancing to popular hits (successi) played by the ‘big bands’ which dominated the music world for the next 20 years. In the 1950s, jazz singers such as Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong topped the charts. Jazz went on to influence later musical styles such as rock and roll, rhythm and blues and, more recently, hip hop. Today, jazz is still performed all over the world. 5 10 15 20 Name Class Date PHOTOCOPIABLE © Oxford University Press Inclusive Reading: Exam Trainer Think Big 3 Inclusive Reading: Exam Trainer • Esame di Stato 2 Esame di Stato 2
